I made the mistake of tanning in a tanning bed, years later I got a cataract. Tanning beds are so not safe. I am super lucky I haven't had any skin cancer problems. I avoid the sun at all costs now, use sunscreen and I'm in the shade. This was a fantastic subject to cover! Thanks Doc 😊

Tanning beds are terrible for your skin, no doubt! 👊🏽

How long did you spend in the sun when you tanned deeply while wearing sunscreen?
I had a similar experience when cycling around an hour. The tan on my arms and neck seemed too dark for me to think I was getting proper protection, and part of my forearms also looked dry. Maybe I didn't put enough on when using a mineral sunscreen. Now I'm trying out different chemical sunscreens. For some of them, I liked how they don't feel too thick or stain fabric too easily.
In some countries, sunscreens have "+" signs to indicate their level of UVA protection. If it takes 15 minutes to tan and a sunscreen's PPD rating is at least 16, you might expect to tan after four hours in the sun.

Great question to answer. I have always been curious about what spf the sunscreen had and if it actually made a difference between the different numbers of spf.

I use 50 sunscreen pretty consistently, and I've tried many varieties over the years, but alot of sunscreens' directions say reapply every two hours, no matter what. Other sunscreens directions say every two hours only if you're swimming or sweating. Which is right? And what's a good sunscreen without mineral content?

Mineral based sunscreens are my strong preference. Applying every 2-3 hours when directly in the sun is good practice (like if you’re at the pool or beach). Obviously, being in the shade of under an umbrella when possible is also key. Neutrogena sunscreens are good options for non-mineral based preparations.

@@DrMudgil Good catch, Doc - Neutrogena is my preferred sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens seem to cake on my skin and flake off. Could that be because my skin is very dry?

@@marthawood3367 It can be tough to find an elegant mineral sunscreen that works well with each individual skin type - lots of trial and error. 😉
