FUN CONVERSATION! It's great to see some greater excitement for Mens Open Bodybuilding along with the other classes. I am a 60 year old LIFE LONG FAN of the sport - always hoping that bodybuilding might make that next step up in popularity that was always elusive and seemed to keep getting pushed out. Just so many really COLORFUL, INTERESTING and ENGAGING personalities in this sport. Obviously, the dawn of social media (UA-cam, Instagram etc.) has FINALLY made it possible for more than just the handful of top pro's to make a respectable living, which is fantastic. That said, this excellent conversation just puts a SPOTLIGHT on the core reasons that bodybuilding has never really progressed like it really could. It needs to have the "balls" to abandon the antiquated beauty pageant model and look to some other extreme sports like the UFC, as blue prints for how to build up a much larger stable of "stars". Stop parading out 20 contestants where 15 are not even competing after three minutes into the pageant. In this format, you end up with 15 to even 18 LOSERS and usually ONE WINNER. Instead, put up a card of head-to-head battles between more evenly matched contenders. Have 10 head to head battles using a ranking system to make battles, along with fan desired matchups (Diaz v Masvidal or Diaz v McGregor). Your Champions might battle 2 or 3 times per year against the number 2 or 3 ranked contenders. Your 20th ranked contender can still be a WINNER on the night if they knock off the number 18. You could end up with 10 or more winners on a single night in different classes. Follow the model of the UFC in promoting their fights. People get VERY EXCITED to see contender matches. In the pageant format of bodybuilding, more than 80% of the competitors are totally ignored. I believe that there are some obvious candidates (Jay Cutler?) to be the Dana White of bodybuilding.

Hey co host Matt...you mention Kevin's gym in Port Charlotte, FL. His name is Kevin Johns. I remember him. In 1991 or 92 I was visiting Punta Gorda, FL right next to Port Charlotte. My cuz and I, both HS athletes at the time found Kevin's gym and he took us under his wing for the week. I think 2 Texas Rangers were training there also, Ruben Sierra and Julio Franco...their Spring training was down the road. Anyways, you are in no way exaggerating about Mr. KEVIN JOHNS. He was a legend down there. His legs were enormous and cut...very intimidating but such quiet humble nice man. He was also an arm wrestling champion. I'd think he was about my height 6'1 and 260 ripped. He was also a black belt ...we as 17 yr old boys were awestruck of this guy.

There are too many pro cards given out. However, It really doesnt matter because the cream-of-the-crop is only going to shine anyways. But when it comes to masters division turning pro, the ifbb has to do something to save these people from themselves. For the love of God if you become a pro as a master you should only be able to do Master shows male and female. Also these Masters who turned Pro never end up competing so it's not an issue but there is some delusional Masters guys and girls out there that are going to end up killing themselves trying to compete with these Young bucks. And that's ashame. Jay you should push the issue that if you turn Pro as Master you should only compete in masters shows. Anyone turning pro over 35+ in masters division shouldnt be allowed to compete in open class. Even if it's not that big of a percentage of people who do compete in the open, there's still a handful of these guys/gals that do try to do it and they're killing themselves trying to do it. Just eliminate that loophole to help save these delusional people from themselves. For the love of God. Even if it's one or two examples of really good Masters pros that did well in the open, so what, 1 in a million isn't something the ifbb should go by. I'd go as far as to say is if you turned Pro as a master your ifbb pro card should say ifbb Masters pro. Small steps like this will help with the health of the "sport". And if there's these older Masters pros that say there isn't enough Masters shows for us to compete in, answer to that is so what. If you compete in open class you're getting close to dead last anyways. If you to move up the ranks you're going to have to kill yourself drug-wise to do it at an advanced aged. No matter how many drugs you take you're never going to get into that top 10 or top 5 regardless. Jay push to get Masters pros a different type of pro card...
