Think of Gundyr’s first thoughts in this game, as you climb from your grave and stumble towards firelink he sees you, the one who bested him and damned him to servitude, and you have no idea yet who he is.
"I thought not. It's not a story the Sunbros would tell you. It's a Firekeeper legend. Champion Gundyr was an Ashen One so powerful and so wise that he could use the flame to create... poise ."
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Champion Gundyr the wise? I thought not. It's not a story the firekeepers would tell you. He was a ludex so powerful and so wise that he could manipulate weird demon shit to get a giant black arm and glowing red eyes. He could even manipulate noobs so harshly to the point of them quitting the game forever. Til one day, unfortunately, someone who'd already played the game on another character parried him to oblivion not once, but twice.
Why make him part of royal family ? I could easily see him as someone from outside who would be fed a pile of lies like you said. He even got a kingly armour to make him feel special. Why would you waste a good heir when even Lorian was spared from being sacrificed more.
Lorian want spared. He wasn't fated to link the flame, as the one fated to was lothric. That's the poetry of their lore. One is worthy, yet not fated, and the other is fated, yet not worthy.
Lorian and Lothric were twins. Lothric was the one that was meant to link the flame bit he ended up being weak and fragile. As for Gundyr, he was the one to link the flame after Lothric. It is seemingly a royal family duty. So it makes sense to why we consider him as part of the royal family.
@@wanderingbufoon I don't recall any mention about order of linking. All we know is Gundyr came late to the festivities and failed to meet his fire keeper. Also we fight him in untended gardens which seem to be a version of world when no bell did yet toll which would suggest Gundyr lived actually long before Lothric as he is at his prime at that point of time. @@Kr10n1 you can get it via context. Theres a religion about Frampt and as to why it became a tradition for the Lothric family to link the flame. Gundyr was suppose to be its champion. I see no reason why he wouldnt link it since he was brought about to the world that Lothric abandoned.
@@wanderingbufoon All very well but there is no link between Gundyr and Lothric. To the contrary, his armour description states it resembles old king, and it turn out that it's very similar to king from demon souls. That's all context I know off.
I heard that in early works of DS3 Iudex Gundyr was actually King of Lothric and you were supposed to fight him where you fight Oceiros. That is even more evidence that the armor Iudex is wearing is indeed modeled from Oceiros.
You didn't mention the pus of man growing on Gundyr's back, which he then transforms into. Did it start growing as a result of the stagnation of humanity, since Gundyr has been waiting for a very long time for a worthy unkindled? Or is it somehow connected to Oceiros, which you suggested being his father, since you can find those enemies in the Consumed King's Garden? Is the pus of man an experiment of Oceiros trying to make a dragon since these beings are very similar to dragons/serpents? Did Oceiros, and so the royal family, somehow made him grow the pus of man through experiments to enforce his role of judge, so that they would be sure whoever beated him was worthy and had the strength to link the fire? The pus of man is in fact weak to fire, and it represents humanity, the age of man, opposed to the age of fire.
Notable then that pus of man enemies seemingly only exist in areas of Lothric. One in the High Wall, four around Lothric Castle and two in the Consumed King’s garden. Gundyr is the only enemy with the pus of man not found in the Lothric Castle areas.
Seeing as the Pus of Man was also apparent on those dragons on Lothric Castle, perhaps Oceiros was doing experiments trying to somehow harvest drake-ness with the Puss of Man, and infecting people with it thus trying to transfer said drake-ness.
I think he impaled himself to stop the spread. It is weak to fire, so the firelink sword would indeed be effective. After you remove the sword, the pus is able to take control.
I liked gundyr as one of my first favorite bosses, mostly because I was a newb who didn’t know how to parry, but I always loved this boss. Btw I mean the champion one not the tutorial.
4:10 There are ingame statues of a previous king in Lothric that somewhat match the design of Gundyr. I assume it must be a statue of Oceiros before he was consumed since they are found in the Grand Archives. It's kind of similar to how Pontiff Sullyvahn is with the statue at the plaza with the winged knight, I think it could be a similar circumstance.
Honestly a few days ago was my first time playing dark souls 3 i was running through the whole not really caring just killing. When i came across this place its the first time i felt like I'm doing something, unearthing secret history. The revelation of the eyes once i gave them to the Fire keeper hit me right in the gut and for the first time I actually cared about this world and then realizing the cycle has to end even tho my happiness just started...what cruel fate
it'd be great if he actually became a guide/teacher for the new undeads. like: alright maggot, get ready. if you can't beat me how can you hope to link the fire?
Just think, if you beat Soul of Cinder, then go back into the untended graves, and kill Champion Iudex with the firelink greatsword that you make from the soul of the lords, you are essentially stabbing the very sword into him that condemned him to his fate in the first place.
“Where I pronounce Gundyr correctly” That’s not how you pronounce Gundyr, it’s Goon-deer. It’s clearly a Germanic-inspired name, so Gun would be pronounces similar to rune and Dyr the same as the god Tyr.

So since champion gundyr gives you his soul when you defeat him in the past, are the souls iudex gundyr gives you everyone he’s defeated once he’s been impaled? And is it because he lost his own soul that we see him taken over by the pus of man in iudex gundyr’s fight?
I suspect that gundyr May have been sent to firelink shrine some time before twin princes betrayed the flame and in his journey to get to the shrine they then chose to stop linking the fire after being persuaded by the pontiff and then may have sent the black knights there to “extinguish the flame” in order to stop gundyr from getting closer to link it, this also gives us a somewhat specific timeframe as to when the people were infected with the oil monsters, my theory for those is that they evolve into the butterfly’s they are shown to be able to posses great knights like dragon slayer amour. (I’d like to see others opinions on this)
Gundyr, maybe close to royal family, sent to guard but told to link the fire, arrives to find nothing at the shrine, there never was anything there for him, all he had was the job of being at the shrine, betrayed by the royals he wasn't special or strong, defeated by an ashen champion, then replaced with a puss of Man controlling the suit like the butterflies did with dragon armour, Gundyr isn't alive in present, just a shell with no ember encasing a mindless blob. If the encounter with Gundyr is only meant to embolden an ashen, then we could say that the main ashen is also tricked like Gundyr was, since likely Ocierus created them, he loves dragons, and dragons don't want the fire, and humans reign in the darkness. Maybe Gundyr is Ocelot, the failed Dragon baby, cast aside and given this cruel fate.
The Lothric bloodline is only a feature of this particular age of fire. They would not have existed in the previous age that Gundyr is a relic of. True, there are surviving entities that persist from previous ages such as Patches, but that entails surviving and not hollowing through the entire age of dark. (Way to go Patches. He survived ALL of the dark ages) So for this theory to be true, we must assume that Lothric's bloodline not only survived at least one age of dark, but also that they failed to link the fire before the princes were ever born. There are too many assumptions here with little evidence to support. It also breaks the narrative, as the Lothric bloodline is said to have made its name by linking the fire. That means potentially this age of fire could be the longest there has ever been thanks to their efforts. Doesn't make a lot of sense for them to fail before this age ever gets started. A good theory, but Gundyr so far seems to be yet another relic of the thousands of cycles that came before. A man from a kingdom whose name is just as irrelevant as any.
It is possible that the events in the Untended Graves aren't taking place during an Age of Dark, but that the entire ordeal is due to the lack of light. The "Repair" sorcery states that "Light is time, and the reversal of its effects is a forbidden art". We also know that Oceiros, in his infatuation with Seath, went mad with knowledge, outright turning himself into an imperfect dragon. Perhaps, in his madness, he stole the light from the Graves, dooming the entire area to stagnation. The king of Old Gundyr's helmet is modeled after is probably an old, or maybe even the first, king of Lothric. Just a bunch of theories, of course, but I believe it's worth considering them.
I mean as far as I'm aware, it's an archaic version of Gunther, and since we will never TRULY hear archaic english, it's really up for speculation. Today we see the name only in writing, never spoken.
Nice little movie at the end there! Didn't expect that :) For a long time, in my head-canon the Lord of Cinder shoved that coiled sword in Gundyr's chest, attempting to make him into a bonfire. Rumor has it something like this was going to be an implemented mechanic, planting the coiled sword wherever thou wishethsth, wishish, withisht, wtvr. But outside of this meta-shoutout to what could've been. I think the betrayal can be further elaborated on by the presence of that "coincidental" invader npc, Daughter of Crystal, Krimheld, who happens to be a member of the Black Hand; and happens to be conspicuously wearing a firekeeper set, which I think she stole from her mark.
Basically he thought he was the ashen one because of his family only to find out he wasn't. So now his new purpose was to test who's worthy of becoming one to end the undead curse
I've enjoyed watching your channel grow, and your talent for storytelling from your perspective of the souls games is very enjoyable. Thank you, and keep going strong my man.
🤔 you know since the untended graves is Gundyr’s future but our past, I’ve began to pick up a few thoughts: When you start the game there’s a coiled sword placed within him basically killing/diminishing the darkness inside of him, when we get to the past though there isn’t any Reminence of a sword....... could it have been the past ashes which fell before him and only the last ash before us actually successfully immobilizing him before his own death? It seems plausible because when we pull the sword out of him present day he is still alive or atleast the monster is anyway and like you mentioned, we were the true ash to become what gundyr strived to be yet wasn’t destined to be that, so we end his suffering. Also i feel since everyone parished in gundyr’s time, that the fire wasnt linked but was instead (as the second ending implies & the eyes you find of the dead firekeeper) used to put the world into complete darkness, i think those specific eyes we picked up are the reason the firekeeper in our time decided to put the world back into complete darkness, i think the past firekeepers vision from her eyes is what made the present firekeeper do so. Lol i know im probably late as hell but i found it interesting
If we're assuming Gundyr's armor came from any Dark Souls king then imo the face looks like a dead wringer for Vendrick. He's got the crown, that dejected look familiar with undead, he was one of the greatest human kings in Dark Souls, and the neck armor looks like his fuzzy ass beard
Oceiros's wife is very similar, or the very same, to Gwynevere. They are both a goddess of fertility. However, the Queen has gone missing recently. And the fate of Gwynevere is speculatable. Two characters in this game possess the possibility to be Gwynevere, The Dancer and Rosaria, because they both have lost and powerful restorative miracles transposed from their souls. I think I'm forgetting a detail that basically confirms which one has to be Gwynevere... but the blue cloth and gold details are still symbols of Lothric Royalty and the Dancer does have them.
I watched your video about the Nameless King being the firstborn son of Gwyn, it doesn't make sense to me that Havel (Who betrayed the gods) would go after the Firstborn son to kill him. Because as you said the Firstborn son also betrayed the gods, it would make far more sense to me that Havel would seek out the Firstborn for help or for advice to take down the gods. I watched Hawkshaw's video about Dark Souls.
Just learned that the first part of his name, when we fight him at the start of the game, Iudex means judge in Latin. Judge Gundyr. It makes sense since he is supposed to judge a champion worthy enough.
Is Gundyr Ocellotte? If he's part of the family, he'd be the only "missing" child. Ocellotte was thought to be powerful enough to link the flame. Just an idea....
There’s a bug if you shoot him with an arrow right when you pull the bonfire sword it breaks his ai so you can whale on him without fear of being attacked back
I think the king Gundyr's helmet is based off of is most likely the Ivory King, though it could work aswell, Oceirus wouldve had Gundyr think that he was as mighty as the Ivory king, maybe he didnt tell Gundyr that the Ivory king was consumed by the fire
One thing I wonder is champion gundyr is in a optional area like we don’t have to go there if we choose not to So say if you play through the game and don’t go there then who would have slayer gundyr if not us someone else would of had too or it would change the past (Then again I’m the “cannon” ds 3 ending you are required to go there to get the fire keeper eyes so I guess it’s expected in cannon that you’d go there)(cannon in quotations)
So he killed himself with the coiled sword to wait for another chosen one to come across him and take the sword out, if they were worthy they would defeat him and get to the firelink shrine
It occurs to me. If gundyr was indeed the child of the lothric royal family, gundyr got stabbed through the heart, because he was too late, the lothric royal family gives love, a bad name.
there's actually a lot of kings he forgot to mention lmao. There's plenty of kings in the dark souls universe that we know of, such as the old iron king, the ivory king, the four kings, king jeremiah, etc. I don't wanna be pedantic cuz I do agree he's linked to lothric but he said we only knew of 2 kings in the dark souls universe which is simply not true lol
I wish Gundyr wasnt Parry-able. Parry makes the Boss soo easy. Just Go Back and keep distance until he does the Jump Slash and Parry, repost and give Full Hell to the Poor dude
I just finished the game and it was fucking great one of the goat. Now for my theory. -Untended graves is in the past for some reason is being consumed by the abyss -its probably gundyr failed to link the fire hence late to the festivities or his literally "late" and the festivities could also means gathering which what we did in the firelink shrine . He also fail to meet the firekeeper which doesnt says for the first time it could mean he just failed to complete his task to link the flame and he took the sword to stop the abyss from sinking in him but as we see him in the present he was infected. Now i think that the firelink shrine is an illusion made by someone like the ds1 anor lomdo and the ds3 ringed city and the eyes of the first firekeeper is not a prophecy but a vision to see through the illusion that linking the flames = good. Now for the first fire keeper eyes. It doesnt mean that the corpse there is the first firekeeper its possible that she just got it from somewhere cause she cant be the first fire keeper as there are already five throne which means that its not the first cycle since gwynn light up the flame. Now for ludleth of courland. (This is just mostly assumption) Courland is the ring city as its the home of the pygmy lord i read somewhere that he call himself pygmy and it just a translation interpretation and he also looks like one of the pygmy lords. now whos keeping the ring city afloat? Gwynns daughter fillanore and thats why he always willing to sacrifice himself to the flame. More questions whos doing the illusion for the firelink shrine? Suspect 1 yurya so she can get anri?? Number 2 handmaiden? Well she got motive as she can be one of gwynns underling or she is a former firekeeper is she blind? Looks like one of the hags in ds 2 which are firekeepers. And if she is she might as well be the first firekeeperand its a ruse. As if. Sorry for the long post and bad english. i tried.
If it is in the past, then the darkness is the abyss. I watched a video where darkness and the abyss is different. It would make sense that the darkness infected gundyr.

I'm just looking for that last song, I want to hear all of that beautiful piece
Gundyr is the best tutorial boss of the souls series
If we're assuming Gundyr's armor came from any Dark Souls king then imo the face looks like a dead wringer for Vendrick. He's got the crown, that dejected look familiar with undead, he was one of the greatest human kings in Dark Souls, and the neck armor looks like his fuzzy ass beard
That was such a cool beginning to the Game, the coiled sword right there--
Someone needs to tell gundyr there's a fire keeper like 50ft behind him now if he wants to go say hello and help link the flame
Nobody ever talks about Gundyr's lore so this is a surprise but a welcome one to be sure.
Long time sub ,glad your back doing what you do best 👍
6:14 refers to Gwyn, too.
His golden armlets and anklets are supposed to resemble Shackles.
Always appreciate your take on things. Great video
Dancer isn't part of family as we know 🤔
Oceiros's wife is very similar, or the very same, to Gwynevere.
Ok, Oceries is now a mandatory kill on every playthrough after what he did to my boi Gundyr.
You never cease to amaze me brother
Thank you, kind gentle sir! =D
It's a terrible day for rain...
me when i see an elk with a firearm:
"Gundyr"
I watched your video about the Nameless King being the firstborn son of Gwyn, it doesn't make sense to me that Havel (Who betrayed the gods) would go after the Firstborn son to kill him. Because as you said the Firstborn son also betrayed the gods, it would make far more sense to me that Havel would seek out the Firstborn for help or for advice to take down the gods.
I watched Hawkshaw's video about Dark Souls.
Have you heard of the tragedy of Champion Gundyr? I thought not, it’s not a story the Lothric bloodline would tell you. It’s a firekeeper legend...
Just learned that the first part of his name, when we fight him at the start of the game, Iudex means judge in Latin. Judge Gundyr. It makes sense since he is supposed to judge a champion worthy enough.
I'd love to hear the song on it's own seems like good chill music while playing dark souls
What's with the big sarcophagus under the big tree in his boss arena? It seems significant in some way.
I think that the normal firelink is actually just in future(meaning untended is technically present)
No way haha. You say Gundyr correctly, take my fucking sub my guy! You’ve earned it.
Is Gundyr Ocellotte? If he's part of the family, he'd be the only "missing" child. Ocellotte was thought to be powerful enough to link the flame. Just an idea....
It's certainly interesting to consider! =D
I wish he was some kind of a NPC, or a boss summon later on
The guy would have been more fit than I am on linking the flame
Didn’t have to kill me like that with the end scenes
Epic video, great work
I really love your videos!
Thank you! That means a lot! =D
Wowzers!!!!! New Lore Video!!!!
One thing of note with his halberd, it has a very similar design to the ones used by knights of Eleum loice (masterful spelling on my part)
So realistically when you beat gundr you put him out of his mysery
One thing I wonder is champion gundyr is in a optional area like we don’t have to go there if we choose not to
So say if you play through the game and don’t go there then who would have slayer gundyr if not us someone else would of had too or it would change the past
(Then again I’m the “cannon” ds 3 ending you are required to go there to get the fire keeper eyes so I guess it’s expected in cannon that you’d go there)(cannon in quotations)
I subscribed just noe. Thank you for the lore!
Poor old Gundyr, wish he had a part in siding with you in killing any boss in DS3.
Yeah like make him a spirit you could spawn
Gundyr was the unkindled one but he failed his mission and the flame went out
So he killed himself with the coiled sword to wait for another chosen one to come across him and take the sword out, if they were worthy they would defeat him and get to the firelink shrine
It occurs to me. If gundyr was indeed the child of the lothric royal family, gundyr got stabbed through the heart, because he was too late, the lothric royal family gives love, a bad name.
I always thought he was Ludleths personal champion. What if he is modeled after one of the king's from Dark Souls 2?
there's actually a lot of kings he forgot to mention lmao.
@@JigglyBooties i believe you're into something friend.
Great Job man
What's the last thing the Queen says at the end?
It sounds like varianox but I don't that's what she actually said.
Vereor Nox! =]
@@TheAshenHollow Ah, thank you. I get the reference now.
"Have you ever heard the Tragedy of Darth Gundyr the Riposte?"
Damn, this video is one of the best!
Can you do one for Slave Knight Gael?
I did a cinematic story for Gael! Does that count? =D
ua-cam.com/video/ZSlKY5u3xS8/v-deo.html
@@TheAshenHollow Yeah, thanks.
Whenever he is displaying the armor sets it looks like the character is breathing deeply like they’re hella pissed 😂 (IKIK playback speed)
"Gundur"
I wish Gundyr wasnt Parry-able. Parry makes the Boss soo easy.
Just Go Back and keep distance until he does the Jump Slash and Parry, repost and give Full Hell to the Poor dude
I don't know I thought the Past when you first beat Gundyr was before the current royal family.
Bro I need that banger outro song pronto
That was bloody good!
I just finished the game and it was fucking great one of the goat.
Now for my theory.
-Untended graves is in the past for some reason is being consumed by the abyss
-its probably gundyr failed to link the fire hence late to the festivities or his literally "late" and the festivities could also means gathering which what we did in the firelink shrine .
(This is just mostly assumption)
Courland is the ring city as its the home of the pygmy lord i read somewhere that he call himself pygmy and it just a translation interpretation and he also looks like one of the pygmy lords. now whos keeping the ring city afloat? Gwynns daughter fillanore and thats why he always willing to sacrifice himself to the flame.
More questions
whos doing the illusion for the firelink shrine?
Suspect 1 yurya so she can get anri??
Number 2 handmaiden? Well she got motive as she can be one of gwynns underling or she is a former firekeeper is she blind? Looks like one of the hags in ds 2 which are firekeepers. And if she is she might as well be the first firekeeperand its a ruse. As if.
Sorry for the long post and bad english. i tried.
If it is in the past, then the darkness is the abyss.
I watched a video where darkness and the abyss is different.
It would make sense that the darkness infected gundyr.
Well he is a Champion, he can kick you out of Lothric.
Star war fans: ever heard of tragedy of Darth plagueis the wise
Dark souls fan: ever heard the tragedy of gundyr
biggest tradegy yet, gundyr is still my favourite boss
i didnt know that the dancer of the boreal valley was of the lothric family
Wouldn't this make the fire witches also part of the Lothric bloodline? You should do a theory about that.
Nice vid! You forgot to prove Gundir is Velka tho.
Damn. Knew I forgot something! ;P
Cool how ur first boss as a former black hand is one of the royals😅
