Growing up, my mom was 'lightly' racist. Meaning she absolutely believed in equal rights, but would raise her voice and speak very slowly for any server that spoke English as a second language. She stopped one day when our server was Asian. She spoke like the server was mentally disabled, and when the server left, I finally spoke up. "You know doing that doesn't help someone learn English. It makes them hate you." She stopped after that.
31:20 I had to practically force my mum to do this a couple of weeks back. We were out for a family meal at the place I work, a nice boutique hotel-restaurant, and she ordered a steak cooked medium. When it came out it was just rare, but she just said to me "It's fine, I don't mind this, that's why I always order medium in case they undercook it." She didn't want to be 'that person' and 'get me in trouble' by sending it back. I just let her be, then told our server when she came to clear the table so that she could tell the kitchen. How are staff supposed to learn if people don't tell them, politely, when they've done something wrong?
I had a personal finance class in high school and the teacher actually taught all of us 10th graders to call and complain about stuff even if it’s not a big thing and claimed “that’s how you get free stuff” 😅 as I’m older now and not an asshole I realize how wild that was and that she probably gave birth to a few Karen’s that day
The extra lemon story reminded me of when I was pregnant with my son. I accidentally tortured my poor waiter by constantly asking for more lemons. He finally got a few other waiters to help him slice several lemons. They brought out this huge, metal bowl completely full of lemon slices. I was so happy. And yes, I did tip them well. I also finished off the whole bowl 😅
I have no issue with preggos asking for weird shit, I get it, cravings. It's the ones ordering alcohol that enrage me. There's a story about a bartender serving virgin drinks to a lady who then demanded the manager when she noticed the big "V" on the receipt before demanding her part of the tip back because she didn't want the nonalcoholic version. She was seven months pregnant.
My mum does this stuff all the time. One of the more awkward moments wasn't about asking for the manager though. We were out shopping in an op shop/thrift store, and she saw a little toy she wanted for my youngest sibling. It didn't have a price label on it. When we got to the register, she asked the cashier how much it cost. Apparently, it was only a couple of dollars. My mother then decided to ask the cashier if he would "just throw it in" for free. The cashier looked confused for a second, but then said that he couldn't. They went back and forth for a few minutes, with the cashier insisting he wasn't allowed to give out freebies, and my mother getting increasingly frustrated he was saying no. I remember staring intently at a pair of jeans on the clothes rack, trying to pretend I wasn't with her 😂 In the end, she grumpily paid for the toy, and we left. She then kept bitching to my siblings and I about it in the car. How "it was only a few dollars", and "it wouldn't have hurt", and she's "gotten freebies from there before" and all that. In the end I got kinda fed up and said it wasn't his fault, and it was a little rude to be demanding free stuff. She tried to say she wasn't demanding, but she at least stopped complaining to us after that.
My mother constantly tries to pass her karen-power to me. Basically getting angry when I am not reacting like a Karen such as she is, which basically is never.
She needs counseling. She is the reason lots of people want to quit there jobs and cuss someone out on the way. Or someone could be holding in all their anger then blow up on your mom. She should stop.
@@The_Cholo I know. Both me and my brother are adults now, and almost every time we visit her we have to recommend her councelling for various reasons. But proud people are proud. Just hoping she'll actually get there at some point.
Hearing about low tipping always makes me cringe. I usually tip around 50%, sometimes more to pizza delivery people because I like making a person's day and seeing them happy. Recently my dad was with me when I paid for a pizza, and on our way back upstairs he told me he was proud of me for being a good tipper. :)
My step mom is a very outspoken lady and calls everyone out on their BS for context but she’s usually nice to workers when we go places but I’ve seen her scream at people for trying to cut line in a drive thru or other people that are being Karen’s/Kens to workers and it cracks me up 😂
My dad was one of those parents and I'm so glad he's dead. I didn't shed a tear and I wouldn't have even gone to the funeral if it weren't for my siblings.
Story time So my mom and I were at Trader Joes, and while we were at checkout she complained about the cashiers attitude. Now, from what I could see, this cashier hadn't done anything wrong, my mom just decided that she didn't like her. Then she complained to customer service. I don't know what happened after that, I had left the building due to embarrassment.
So my partner (boyfriend at the time) was getting discharged from the hospital after his emergency surgery to remove Crohn’s disease tissue and fix a hole that had formed in his bowels and was seeping fecal matter into his urine and bloodstream. My grandpa had picked us up from the hospital and a volunteer staff member was escorting us to the pharmacy for his meds and out the door, he was obviously mentally handicapped and kept forgetting where to go and kept passing the pharmacy. My grandpa yelled at the poor guy about how incompetent he was. I was just shocked how he couldn’t notice his very visible handicap button. The way he even talked it was obvious. I just kept apologizing to the poor guy and told him to go take a break, I had it from there. I’m still mortified over it.
As a child, my mom got so depressed from her stressful life that she was denied entry into more stores than I can count. As an adult, she's better know. But, I now do all of the grocery shopping for the whole house.
That’s not a Karen. That’s an unsung hero. Source: worked at Walmart for three years. Got yelled at twice by managers for “not doing my job fast enough.” Both times a customer stood up for me. I’m very grateful to both of them.
mum made a teenager cry, when she was told she felt offended she was told this and that see would never do such a thing. It was her old workplace we used to go eat at for years after she stopped working there. We don't anymore.
After lockdown ended I took my Pomeranian to get groomed. Obviously it was busy so it took a bit longer for Sakura to get groomed. My mom screamed at a cashier that had nothing to do with anything about how long it took. Yelled at the groomer who then refused to groom my dog again claiming my mom was racist. The store manager gave my mom $15 off the grooming cost. She was proud and I was horrified and embarrassed 😞
My mother decided to go to my doctor. I really wish she hadn't. She had some sort of argument with him. My mother told me some story that I really have a hard time believing. The fact is, my mother will fight with everyone. She has done it since I was a child. She always makes any problem worse by her attitude. Completely the opposite of my dad. Eventually she will pick a fight or have some slight she decided you committed against her. To be honest, and I'm just guessing here, he probably confronted her with the possibility she might have a mental illness. I will never know though. Anyhow, she decided to just stop going to appointments so they fired her as a patient (not the first doctor or business). She was furious and insisted I stop seeing him. I refused. He saved my life. He's a wonderful doctor. The next appointment with him was so stressful for both of us. I was so embarrassed, but so was he. We never spoke of it. Except for one time he told me, "Not everyone is like you. Some people get very bitter and mad at the world." I've been with him for over 20 years. My mother is still bitter about it. Now my doctor is known as an incredibly kind man, and the when I tell people this story, they usually say, "Wait... Dr. C? She had a fight with HIM? I've never heard of him fighting with anyone." Exactly.
I'm so glad you didn't let your mom dictate you like that. I'm even more glad that your doctor was able to help you when you needed him most. Best wishes!
I got the Blockbuster manager to call my mom and tell her he caught me trying to steal a video game when I was around sixteen. I actually wanted to rent an anime, but they're all 18+ (although none of it was hentai), and they needed an adults' permission. I could hear her screaming from the phone, and he let me rent my animu for free because he was laughing so hard (with his hand over the mic).
My parents weren't that type generally, but my dad had VERY high expectations for waitstaff. I didn't realize it as a kid...then I worked in restaurants, and I understood. The time I ate with him and my kids at rainforest cafe, the server brought chicken strips out for my 4yo & sat the plate in front of her. My dad touched the plate to see if it was hot--it was. He bitched out the server for "potentially burning my granddaughter" and told him to never put a hot plate in front of a child. Server walked away. My dad said that if the server is smart, they'll give us her meal for free, or the server was getting no tip. Server didn't comp the kids meal, so my dad left no tip. I was so embarrassed 😳
Lol my older sis and I went with our mom to a nice restaurant for dinner once a couple years ago. They tag team serving and they were busy. Sis and I ordered entrees and mom got soup and salad. The entrees showed up and the servers hadn't brought her soup yet and she sat just getting pissed. A little waitress we hadn't seen yet showed up to make sure we'd gotten everything. Mom yells "WHERE'S MY SOUP!" Sis about threw her fork it surprised us so much. Poor waitress jumped and looked like she was about to cry and a few seconds later another server came by with the soup and apologies for it being so crazy busy. 😕 To this day I have to remind her that an obviously understaffed/busy place is going to require a little patience.
Not sure if this makes him a Karen, but we went to Disney World and got the 3 day park hopper pass. First two days were fine, but the third day, at Magic Kingdom, my dad lost it and pouted in the car for the rest of the day. My mom, my brother (22 at the time) and I (20 at the time) had a blast and got tons of pictures. Bought souvenirs, ate what we wanted.
One time when I worked at old navy when I was a teen, a woman came in and tried on like 2 whole racks of clothes and yelled at us because they didn’t come in her size. Now, this woman was a whale. 600 lb life woman trying on clothes meant for woman 500 lbs lighter than her. She then proceeded to throw everything on the shelf and racks on the floors while me and my coworkers tried to stop her while my manager called the cops. When the cops got there she started crying to them that I had punched her in the face. It didn’t happen and she got charged for all the stuff she had ripped and destroyed
My mom (who is now in her 70s) has always been one of these. Typically it's done in a passive-aggressive way. Like if a store doesn't have an item she is looking for she will wait until an employee is within earshot to say something like "This store doesn't have anything" or "I bet they have it at (competing store)." However, one time when I was a senior in high school, she and I walked to a nearby store to get some pictures developed. I think they were from my prom. We dropped them off in the one-hour box, but when we came back an hour later they told us they had accidentally mixed up the roll with someone else in the regular box. We were told that if we wished, they would process the roll within an hour and for our inconvenience, we would be issued a store credit to cover the cost. I thought it was a fair deal and said we'd just come back in an hour. My mom on the other hand, felt the need to tell the photo developers that this would mean we had to walk half a mile to the store for a third time and that it was starting to get dark out. Then she asked "So if I get mugged, I can sue (name of store)?" And then, of course, she asked to speak to the manager. She asked the same question. The manager said she could do whatever she wanted. When the time came to get the pictures an hour later, my mom borrowed my sister's car (my parents shared a car, which my dad had used to drive to work that night. I hadn't yet started driving) to drive the half mile to the store. I went in myself and apologized for my mom's behavior. They just kind of chuckled and told me not to worry about it. In case you were wondering, we lived in a big city, but in an area where you certainly didn't feel unsafe walking around at night.
Actually opposite. My mother once returned a pair of worn for 6 months, pair of jeans from the Gap, where the zipper had been irreparably damaged because I had tried to fit into them after I got too fat! The Gap exchanged them, without incident.🙂
You absolutely nailed it with your first sentence. Our family of six didn't have the money needed to travel. We did do a lot, as in hundreds, of day or half day trips to lakes, rivers, treasure hunting the creeks that fed out of town, etc.. There is something to be said for getting filthy, then cleaning up at home and sleeping in your own bed.
