Ok so now Makita has Black Impact bits, Gold impact bits, and now SILVER Nickel plated Dam impact bits! I just want the best Don't make me test all 3 types , Please! Back when we had real knowledgeable people at store we could ask them. Now I just go home, get on the googletuber and try to find a video. Wow, we have we really improved ? Ok. So according to Makita's ramble Black Oxide "Contractor Bits" fits between "Premium Torsion bits" and "Standard non-impact Bits" So in my mind I would say the "Gold is the "Premium Torsion bits" The Silver plain finish is the old non torsion "standard bits" and The Black "Contractor Bit" fits between the 2 (in price and life expectancy/quality.) But Where does the Silver (nickel plated XPS Bits) impact torsion bits fit?? People griped about "Gold" bits snapping and shearing bits. That means extremely hard bit! Rounding over (without being caused by the operator) is too soft of bit! Like all things there is NO one bit that can do it all. That is why they have come out with silver XPS and Black bit"! I would guess that the Black Oxide S2 bits are softer! (not near as hard as the Gold). So if your snapping Gold bits, and cant turn down your power, or use a clutch, then you would go down 1 step softer. That would be the silver Nickel plated,special alloy XPS ones (I think since we have no Makita sales rep here to tell us) If you are snapping Silver "special alloyed" XPS bits, then step down one softer to Black "Contractor" (S2 steel) bits or for goodness sake get a less powerful driver, one you can turn down or one with a clutch! Long story but I figured others need the real scoop on the 3 types of bits. I just ordered the 50 pc set of XPS Makitas. If all I did was Phillips and Torx lumber screws and want super ,super hard bits I may pick up the gold ones sometime. (That is about all they make in Gold) I needed a set with straight,square,hex, torx, phillips, and some holders and a bit magnet in a case . I may just order a Milfawkee and Dewilt set just to test them all. Googletuber Project Farm did a real good test on like 8 brands but these XPS were not available back then.
I have the impact X set and I 'm happy with it.

Impact Gold are being discontinued . The price and material of the bit should tell you what one is superior..not the color
