  • The Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Cassino War Cemetery is one of the most evocative locations anywhere on the Second World War battlefields of Europe - due to the fierce fighting witnessed here 75 years ago.
Historian, Dr Glyn Prysor provides more detail in this guided tour.

My 3rd cousin, once removed, Lieut. Dan Billany, is commemorated on Panel 5 of one of the war memorials to soldiers who were killed in action, but have no known grave. He was a school teacher and novelist in Kingston upon Hull before the war. He was captured by Rommel's troops in Tobruk, Libya in June 1942 and was sent to a PoW camp in Italy. After the Italian capitulation in September 1943, he and his fellow prisoners were released, but still had to evade German soldiers who tried to round up the former Allied prisoners of war. Dan is not known to have been involved in the Battle of Monte Cassino, but his final resting place is somewhere in Italy. No one heard of him again from January 1944. Sadly, his father, Harry Rusling Billany, never came to terms with his son's death and died of a broken heart in a mental hospital in Somerset in 1950.

My Dad fought and was wounded here, he told stories of the horrific fighting, the fear and the sacrifices made by men, some still teenagers. I feel proud and also a great thanks to all who fought for freedom.

I have visited this cemetery and the Abby of Monte Cassino. Following in the footsteps of a friend of my father. Who served in the Italian campaign. Peter Macphee returned after the war. To his native Isle of Skye Scotland. Where my father also was born and brought up. Although my father was not old enough to be called up.Thank you for your service. Its very highly appreciated.

Poles suffered the greatest losses in percetage term which they could not fill. All of the nations mentioned above were present at the victory parade apart from the Poles - this is how the Anglo-Saxons thanked their most faithful ally.

A good documentary but why did you not mention the Polish troops who finally captured the Abbey?

I'm not sure if friends of my Grandfather's are interned here. He told me about Monte Cassino. He was a member of The First Special Service Force. He landed at Anzio and saw action at The Mussolini Canal Monte La Difensa and up the Boot into Rome
