There isn’t a day that goes bye that I don’t think of all the brave men and that fought for us I hope the the younger generation are reminded of what there passed family went. Thru! We need more teaching to see how brave these men were ! I wish I could talk to more people and sit and hear there stories! Every time I see any veterans I stop and give them a huge! I think of all this brave men every Day as My Grandfather was in the First WW and my father was In the WW2 buried in Hanover British Cemetery and received the Victoria Cross ,My heart goes out to All those brave men who fought for all of us! WE will never forget them !
My great grandfather was savaged twice with shrapnel at second Boer War 1902 at 19 years old years later at Battle Somme he never ever recovered despite going through Ranks as Sergeant he was in 2 different Battalion but same Regiment Liverpool King's Regiment he ended up being medically discharged from Army and left severely Disabled for remainder of his life fighting meagre 8 shillings week War Disability Pension before dying 3 years before his Son in same regiment but as Sapper Royal engineer who was killed in 2nd war accident in August 1944 he's buried in Rome War Commonwealth Cemetery he was 23 years old. Last I heard doubt its there now as York Railway museum underwent huge overhaul from great grandads war records train carriage minus wheels that brought them home was put in display in museum they would of had to scrub it clean with disinfectant as all those seriously wounded and dying men all screaming for there Mother all bodily fluids including blood and vomit must been horrendous as only dying got the limited cots bodies just literally piled so closely together Sergeant Brash would made sure the troop stayed alive on their way home must scared him. There was no mention he had PTSD but I'm guessing he did as never spoke about Wars as far to distressing for him instead he took his anger out on his children Nan use to say he was incredibly strict and at times very bad tempered but they learnt to live with it All these young men some lied about there age I've heard 13 year old managed to pass off as 17 years as in them days you looked so much older than they do now similar families losing Son's and Husband's down the Coal Shafts one family during explosion lost husband and 3 boys. May all those that lost there lives may they all rest in paradise of Heaven free from suffering and anguish
Corporal Willam Clamp was born in Flemington Motherwell, which was close to where I was brought up. His name is on the war memorial in the Duchess of Hamilton Park in Motherwell. A true hero.
Remember too the thousands of men in all those graves surrounding the V.C.'s. And those buried in cemeteries across Canada. My grandfather was gassed & died at age 50 in 1932. His brother also "survived" the war & lived with shrapnel in his foot until he passed in the 1950s. They were immigrants from Belfast in their 30s, one with a wife & 2 daughters. But they went back to fight for King & Country. They didn't win any medals but they did their job.
They were brave men , they should have gotten medals but even if they didn’t they were still the bravest men that walked that fought for their families and freedom!
