- The American military cemetery in Margraten is the only American cemetery in the Netherlands. More than 8000 American soldiers are buried here who fought in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and those who eventually fell in Germany.
There are also 40 sets of brothers buried side by side, and 6 soldiers who have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
I will also tell you the story of the 6 soldiers who were awarded a medal of honor and what they did for it.

If you think it's honorable and beautiful what I do, and you think I'm worth it. Be sure to subscribe to my channel. There are plenty of episodes coming your way!
Thank you for your work.
My dad's brother was killed in Germany March 3rd, 1945. He is Charles Crosswhite from Bend, Oregon. He is buried at Margraten Cemetery. Thank you so much for the tour of this beautiful place. My sister was contacted several years ago by the Dutch family who have adopted his grave. I'm grateful my family chose to have him buried there. I can't think of a better place for his final rest. May God bless the people of the Neatherlands. Greetings to you all from America. 🇺🇸
@Spacebanana-im5qt thank you so much for sharing this with me. This is one of the main reasons why I started this channel. And you are right about the Netherlands, we still commemorate the war and all the people who served For our freedom every year. And thanks for watching
Thank you. My father was a Timberwolf of the 104th Division, Unit 413, and fought in the Netherlands. I am proud of you.
Thank you Marlene for the very kind words. I appreciate it a lot. But I am just making sure everyone is able to see places like these 😉. But thanks for watching
I am a retired and disabled UU Army officer. I attended high school at Robert G. Cole Jr/Sr HS. Being of Dutch heritage, I feel great kindredship with LTC Cole. My son and LTC Cole were both born at Brooke Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Thank you for your great tribute,
Thank you for your service sir. Wow that is really cool to hear your son and LTC Cole were born in the same hospital. I am trying to make more content but unfortunately time is a issue since I am in the military my self. But I am working on it 😉
Great video. Thanks for honoring the memory of these fallen heroes. We owe them so much. ▪︎ Retired US NAVY Chief.
Your welcome I think it is the least a can do. We certainly owe them a lot. And thanks you for watching i really appreciate it.
American from Texas here. Thank you for sharing this. Job well done. PS: The yellow rose on Texan Lt.Col. Robert Cole's grave brought tears to my eyes.
thanks for watching. I'm glad I was able to share this with you. I only talked about the soldiers with the medal of honor but in fact all 8000 soldiers are heroes lying here. Which is sad, but they have a beautiful final resting place.
@@TravelingToHistory These hallowed soldiers who laid "such a costly sacrifice upon the altar of freedom" (A. Lincoln) deserve this beautiful place to rest. Thanks again for spreading this word for the fallen of all nations.
Not sure if you knew, but the "Yellow Rose of Texas" was a popular song during the Texas Revolution against Mexico. Today, the yellow rose is a symbol of Texas. That's why seeing it propped on that Texan's gravestone so many thousands of miles away from home made me cry.
Wow i didn't knew this thanks for sharing this. From now on, i am going to remember this. And i get why it brought tears to your eyes now seeing this
My uncle , Kenneth L. Harris , is buried in Margraten, god bless the adopting family since the creation of the awesome cemetery, these Dutch families deserve so many thanks .
I can't thank you enough for your efforts in this mission! My uncle, Joseph Schutz was killed in WW I in France. He is buried in Muese Argonne Cemetery (SP?) My wife and I, along with our toddler daughter, visited there when we were stationed in Loan, France. It is also very impressive, as were the many others we visited while searching for Uncle Joe in Free Europe. Perhaps someone will create something for them. Again, many thanks!
Gerald Schutz USAF Vet
Your welcome Gerald. This is the reason why I started TTH in the first place. And thank you very much for watching I really appreciate it
I visited this cementary several years ago when I was in the Netherlands, it was early in the morning and it was foggy and and when the carillon started playing it gave me "goose bumbs", I will never forget that feeling.
It sure is a special place to visit. Whenever I'm in de area I make sure to visit it.
My Uncle, Thomas P Gogal is buried here. I was blessed to be able to visit his grave and meet the family that has been caring for his grave for 70 plus years. It is a beautiful place, something I wish all Americans were aware of and could see.
That's great indeed Lisa, iltje cemetery is always kept in the best condition as possible for sure. Thanks for watching I appreciate that
@@TravelingToHistory thank you for educating people on this sacred site and the beauty of the Dutch people.
Thank you for this great video. My uncle is buried in this cemetery.
You are welcome Melissa. That is something special, what is the name of your uncle if Iay ask. And thank you very much for watching
I have an Ancestor buried in a Netherlands Cemetery from WWII. But, he’s buried in Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Ysselsteyn, the German Cemetery. Eugen Dendler Nov. 14, 1902 to April 25, 1945. Don’t know much about him.
Those soldiers's forefathers left Europe in search of a new life in America. Many years later their grand grandsons had to fight two wars in Europe to put an end the conflicts their grandparents had left behind.
Europe is full of war cemeteries, its a historical battlefield. Respect to those who fell, respect to the enemies as well
I've adopted a grave and a name on the walls there.
SSGT Donald A Kohanke from Ohio (Grave J-17-17) and SGT Ray Beachler on the walls. SSGT Kohanke was a Timberwolf
Oh that is a beautifull gesture. That is something that I would like to do in the future as well. I'll make sure to visit the grave whenever I visit Margraten.
My uncle is buried here. 1st Lt Kenneth A. Lund.
Ow wow, were you able to visit him once ?
We owe him.
Very good video on a US Cemetery I have not heard of. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more excellent videos.
Thanks for the compliment. And there wil be more video for sure 😉
There are still more than 50,000 American MIA's from WW2.
That are incredible numbers indeed.
The biggest American Memorial war cemetery is in the Philippines located in Bonifacio Global City (BGC)
Sets of brothers. How horrible for their families.
As for the missing it makes you wonder where they could be.
Excellent video on American Heros. Thank you, please keep them coming.
Thanks for watching Fred. I will do my best. That is the least I can do.
Great video Sander! Well explained aswell. Keep the videos coming. 👍
Thnx mate. Thanks again for watching my videos as always i really appreciate this. 😉

Thank You brother
My wife born in Prüm
You have forgotten to tell, that Dutch family's has adopted the graves for maintenance of the tombs and bring flowers on special occasions in honour the soldiers and trying to get foto's of those soldiers so that the tombe has a face.
You are completely right. But in the future I am planning to go back to Margraten for another video 😉 more about the history about it and there I will include that information
It is more that Dutch people still has a lot of respect for our liberators that give us our freedom.@@TravelingToHistory
Lovely video! RIP all those brave guys!
Thanks for watching Paul. RIP is the right word indeed.

Thanks for watching Joe. I hope you are able to visit it soon. It is a really beautiful cemetery.
Nice video. Your other ones are pretty good to.
Thanks for watching Nick. I am still in my beginning fase, but doing my best to make great videos. And above all make sure that history is not forgotten
Thank you so much for this video in advance of taking my mother whose father was killed in action most likely in Werl Germany coming upon a prison and civilian labor camp. On this very day, the day of his death, i came across your tribute. Amazingly 6:51 into it, you had featured Edward R.B. Jones head stone with the white roses. Crazy Coincidences. I'm giving this for my mothers 80th birthday and arriving in June from Texas and visiting with our adopted family that lives in Maastricht which i met by crazy coincidences also. Thank you.
Oh wow that is very special indeed. That on the day your grandfather died you just happened to come across my video. It will be a great experience to visit the grave of your grandfather together with the adoptive family. And thank you for watching JK.
My grandmother's brother is buried there. Thanks for the video
Thank you for watching Lauren. Have you ever visited the cemetery?
@@TravelingToHistory I have not, but my grandmother did several years ago.
@laurengibson-starnes3045 that's great that she was able to visit brother.
@@TravelingToHistory yes
And now they have a lot of pictures of the soldiers placed beside the cross. You now see a face who had fought in the war, not just a cross.
Oh that is great, such a beautifull gesture. Thanks for sharing that with me, and for watching
You deserve more recognition for you work!
Thank you very much twin turbo. I really appreciate that. I hope that more people share that thought. Stay tuned more video's to come
And all the graves are adopted by the local residents, ther is even a waiting list for people who want to adopt a grave.
Very interesting well done thanks for this
Thanks for watching Sean. This is the least a van do for the fallen
if only they could see America today.
My father in law a wounded veteran from the battle of the bulge died last August at 95...he never talked much about his days in the war. He married a Dutch woman....every 5 years they would travel to Holland to see her family and he would visit his friends buried in those cemeteries..he always said the real heros were the one who never came home...in the final years of his he would actually cry when he saw what was becoming of this country...he often said this was not the country he fought for...and couldn't believe his buddies died for this...I could have never walked in his shoes....the epitome of humility.
So sad . Thousands of miles from Home. There is German humanity, but, more importantly HUMAN humanity.....The horrors cannot ever be erased ..!
May TheyRest in Eternal Peace In The Loving Arms of God
You are right. Thanks for watching.
Wonder what these poor men wud make of biden? Rip and respect from ireland
What would they have thought of the what the USA has become since WW2 in general? Many of those men, had they the choice to make of whether to go fight in that war or not, would have stayed home.
@@karlheinzvonkroemann2217 ur right the decline started long before Biden...
I wish you'd consider deleting this comment. Not helpful to introduce divisive 2022 US politics here. All those graves represent guys who fell for us all...whatever our politics.
In response to some of the comments below regarding what these brave men and women would think of America today: as a Vietnam Vet I can tell you. How could our descendants elect as President a known pathological liar, serial sexual abuser, and a lifelong tax evader who ended his term inspiring and instigating a seditious insurrection against our government in direct violation of his oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States?
Biden has done nothing in life outside politics since Nixon. Yet is a several x millionaire. And getting richer. Trump took no presidential salary. I wonder who’s Coke was found in the WH?
As a Vietnam veteran wasn’t our wreckless pullout from Afghanistan wonderful? How bout those dead Marines defending the airport…with RIFLES. YOU like $5/g gas? It was $2.46 in 2020 in my city. Thanks for serving in Vietnam.
