Let’s go back to a simpler time. Back in 2003, the work of Hayao Miyazaki and the team at Studio Ghibli captured the world’s heart with Spirited Away. What you probably didn’t know is the fact Miyazaki didn’t even make it to the ceremony. He wasn’t there to see his film become the first and only foreign featured film to win Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.
That’s what’s in store for you with this video. We’ve got tons of behind the scenes and moments in the film that you missed out on during your multiple viewings. We’re talking about stuff like the crew’s rush to get the film produced on schedule, how multiple voice actors ate KFC during some recordings, and the spiritual symbolism attached to the film. We’re trying to say this video, right here, is required viewing for any Studio Ghibli fan.
Screen Rant is going to run the gambit. We’re explaining the characters’ names and how the story came together-subtle nods to other studios and even changes made under the American crew. There’s so much in store that we just want to get into it.
Strap in, and get ready to journey back to those warm feelings and full-hearted attempts at the animation that we long for today. We’re giving you a reason to go back and watch Spirited Away here (not that you needed an excuse)!
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Sit back and click play; you won’t regret it--promise!

The first time I ever saw this film I distinctly remember thinking, “I’ve got absolutely no idea what I’m looking at, but I simply cannot look away.”
that was me!!
I was young and it made me so uncomfortable... but I watched it again recently and it's actually really well done
Yeah it came on tv when I was like 11 or so and I was entranced. Watched the whole thing intently. And remembered it vividly
@@OnlyTrustTheGovernmentbro I saw it today and I didn't like it at all, and I find it hard to believe as everyone loved it

Spirited Away isnt a Movie, its an experience. Something that gets inside you and never leaves. It feels like an old memory, like youve been in that world even though you havent. No words con make justice to Spirited Away.
It's not my favorite animated movie it's my favorite movie
I feel this way too, thank you for your beautiful comment
Makes me feel like im watching my dreams in real time.
Exactly
I always thought that, especially the last part "Like you've been in that world even though you haven't".
Spirited Away will always be my favorite Studio Ghibli movie next to Howl's Moving Castle.
I just actually watched it and I’m in love with it
True dat
I dont think its a studio ghibli but I like silent voice and princess mononoke(nevermind princess mononoke is on of his)

@@ale5cat-san689 I realized that princess mononoke is one of studio ghibli's movies
The scene where Chihiro was in the barn with the pigs. I believe those were other humans who fell victim to Yubaba's trap.
I thought that was made clear in the film lol
So humans turn into pigs and if no one saves them, they turn into food? humans turn into food? That’s so creepy.

my much older cousin took me to the movies to see this one when i was 7 years old. i was so upset because as a boy i didn´t want to see a movie about "a girl traveling to a magical world". i came in grumpy and left just in awe. back then there was no internet so all those years i kept it in my heart fantasizing about seeing it again one day. when the day came 8 years later i became that little excited boy once more. such an unbelievable nostalgic and emotional movie.
I think you're confused. The Internet was absolutely around in 2002.
@@jaylevan3769 well at least not in the household i grew up in. not that I would have found and be able to download it at age 7.
Hi I’m japanese.
The front of the house sign for the bathhouse says 油屋 it reads “YuYa” it doesn’t read “Sentó” .
“YuYa” can mean hot water house which is a bathhouse. But it doesn’t show any connection to Chihiro’s name.
The house on an island scene is homage to an 80’s anime film “A Night of Galaxy Train”.
Nice

I studied Japanese and I noticed that 😅 I honestly think this was a huge mistake
@@viralviruz8694 I mean people can have their own opinions and preferences so if you don't like it then maybe it's not for you. Or maybe you need to give it another chance. You mean "Night on the galactic railroad" 1985
When I was young, around 7-8 years old I didn't like Spirited Away all because the no-face scared me. I didn't touch that movie until I was 13, when it came up on Netflix. I watched it again and soon got over it, forgetting about the movie again.
Now I'm 14 and I've watched Sprinted Away many times and each time I love it more and more. Spirited Away is the best Studio Ghibli film and I won't ever change my mind.
Well, you did better than me. I’m a little older than you, and I only watched it a few hours ago for the first time.
How is Spirited Away on Netflix?
@@Aimi_Kaneko it is!!
“Only if I knew Japanese” was literally my thought every time I think about this movie, every aspect has a deeper meaning and every action in this movie had a meaning but it’s something I’ll have to do more research on.
It wasn’t until my Japanese friend told me that each character had a meaning to them as well.
The weird white fat character that was in the elevator with chihiro is actualky the god of daikon.
It’s basically saying all the characters that they were serving were a god of something.
It’s crazy

This is more of a "Did you know? Ghibli-" video more than a "What you missed" one, but I didn't expect anything from Screen Rant so that's fine.
True!!
No mention on the faces being gone from the memorial statue in front of their car, the faces were there in the beginning but gone at the end symbolizing how Chihiro helped spirits move on 🙏

This movie and many of Miyazakis films never leave me. I always go back to them through memory as if I lived them! One memorable moment was in Porco Rosso when that woman sings a French song. It was so beautiful and majestic. It felt very much alive even though... it never happened irl. It hurts to know we will never see films such as these in the future. But I understand thats simply how the market works.
This movie is a masterpiece.
i watched this movie once 12 years ago. I really need to rewatch, going on a massive nostalgia trip rn
No face's transformation is frog like because the first thing he consumes is the frog character, he was not worm like, plus when he offers the gifts he will only consume you if you take them. He consumes the greedy.
When she fell down the stairs I was eating a potato and choked on it because I was laughing so hard
My siblings and I always laugh at that part
I remember seeing this movie at my grandmas house when I was younger. I was so entranced, I had a huge crush on Chihiro, but I was also frightened by some of the other charachters. I didn't know the name of the movie because there was no guide on her TV but it stuck with me forever. It felt like a distant memory, always peeking up in my head until one day in high school I met a girl who said this was her favorite movie and it immediately clicked. I went home again and watched it that day. This is a magical film forsure
This is quite literally the same experience I had with this movie.

The Japanese people love KFC so much that it became a staple in their menu during New Year's Eve Celebration.
Woww that's interesting
One of the most heart warming flim ever
Spirited away is the best anime I've ever watched...yahr.I always screamed when haku's appearing on the screen,he so handsome bruh~
Let’s not forget about the voice behind Lin! Meg from Hercules!
Oh my god you’re beautiful 🥺😭👏🏻
There's something about Studio Ghibli films and the excellent and detailed world and setting s that just make the movies that much more magical
No, the backing up of the car at the end, is not the reverse of the arrival. It looks like weeks have gone by since they drove up. Grass that wasn't there, is now overgrown. To keep the family from having to face serious questions on their disappearance, I imagined that the road to the theme park was always overgrown, but they saw it differently when they arrived because it was part of the spirit world. It was back to 'normal' when they began to leave.
Spirited away Is my favorite animated movie of all time. The best animated movie of all time and my second favorite movie.
Hard to purchase . I can watch them over and over and still find things I missed . Thank you for sharing your craft , your soul
At the end I thought chihiro and haku were going to run away together so I got so happy, but then he stayed back 😃
We have to give to screen rant who put so much effort for us everyday. Thank you 💞
Spirited away is a beautiful movie. I love most of studio Ghibli movies.

Nice
This movie has a special place in my heart because Chihiro is such an anxious kid and I am a pretty anxious person.
Literally just watched it earlier today at a school grade event. It was greatness.
Nice Facts my friend
My favorite Studio Ghibli movie of ALL TIME
I just watched this movie for the 1st time day before yesterday. Of made me cry. I really love this movie now.
Oh man I've seen this movie so many times. It's my absolute favorite movie
I didn't missed the scenes I watch this movie and spirited away are LEGENDARY MOVIE
I knew it was the same voice actor as lilo as soon as the movie started but she quickly forged her own identity which was really cool
The first time I saw this movie I thought “That looks just like the island of Kame house” and thought it was just a coincidence. I guess Hayao Miyazaki is a bigger DBZ fan than I thought!
KFC is a popular fast food dish in Japan. So popular that it becomes a holiday tradition for some families in Japan to have it and have a fluffy cake for dessert.
The crazy thing is that ,,SEN,, means in my language ,,DREAM,,. This is my favourite movie ever of all the movies I've ever seen
What is your language?
Spirited away is my favorite movie
they put enormous effort into making the dubs of Ghibli films simply the best in the medium
*I can not stop watching spirited away*

KFC is typical holiday fare in Japan. Since it’s also a favorite in the US, it just makes sense to chomp on during dubbing in both versions.
Great video! Although I wished you mentioned the link between the bathhouse “Oil house” and child prostitution. I feel that it is a pretty large hint and it also ties in beautifully with the hidden meanings behind the names Chihiro and Sen.
What do their names mean in connection to the movie?
My favorite movie of all time.

I remember that i watched this in 5th grade and i was so bored at that time because i don’t understand what’s going on from the movie but i still enjoyed it ah. Good old memories I’m now at high school it’s so hard at high school I’m grade 10 now. I forgot about this film then i saw jazza’s video remaking it now I’ve comeback.
Just done watching but I'm still on process 🤣🤣🤣
I love spirited away!
"ma!" that's what it is!! I've always had this deep appreciation for Japanese media that does this. American media never does! They can't just relax and enjoy the moment
What do you mean by “ma!”?
@@Sprinkling_waters 14:49
Good vid
They characters you highlight at 10:44 say “Oil House” not bathhouse, and pronounced “Wuyou”.
Am I the only one annoyed at the narrators pronunciation of Ghibli? FYI its Geeblee not Jiblee
Also it’s Thackery Binx, not Zachary.
Love this movie I don't care if anyone said "I don't get it." I'll watch it 1,000 more times

Great movie
My parents mistakenly gave me that as a kids show when i was 7. I can feel my terror since back then i wasnt ready for it
In Japan, eating KFC is a Christmas tradition
Cool
Omg noface terrified me when I first seen this as a kid idk y it even scared me so badly but now I find it adorable
This was my very first anime movie that watched when I was younger and I still love it
Anyway I just watched this movie last night. I had a glimpse of this movie when I was on my 3rd grade I think.
You barely did some fact checking. 04:39 that's not Japan, that's Taiwan
Miyazaki denies that it was based on the place in Taiwan. It is actually inspired by the Dougo Onsen in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture in Japan.
my teacher made me watch it and i really gotta thank her
2nd one to comment still proud.
Spirited away always stuck with me since the first time I watch it when I was 7 or 8,, I’m 14 now and it will always be my favourite. It just gives me a warm feeling mixed with nervousness at some parts of the movie. I just love it tbh!
the english voice actress for chihiro’s mother actually was eating apples while filming the part where she ate the spirit food !
Who is watching this in 2020?
i just finish to watch this move and its so great my aunt is watching this and i watched too its so so great i want to watch it 100000000000000 or more times (ima boiiii just using my grand grandmas phone hehe)
I love how No Face grew hair just by eating
one thing everyone missed is that they have superhuman leg power but they is slow
Fun fact: Aunt Seniba's house is takes inspiration from a typical estonian farmhouse.

I have saw this movie in class
I have no idea how I found this film,I’ve known it my whole life, it found me.
I swear that movie was like a fever dream
in german yubabas voice is given by Nina Hagen. Maybe some people know her, outside of germany 😊
"What are those weird stones they look like little houses" "Some people think little spirits live there"
i have no idea what i just watched but it was a nice movie
Cant you do a pitch meeting on Spirited away?
8:22 could you explain where you got this information, i don't read kanji or japanese, but i'm seeing comments that the name rumi can't be the name on the card. And I check Rumi in Japanese name, none of it match the kanji on the card.
Will you do a pitch meeting on this movie
This movie gave me nightmares as a kid!
I watched spirited away when I was still 5 years old but now I’m 7 and I think I saw a little bit of secrets but I don’t know if they’re true.
My most favorite movie ever. I love it so much.
This and Castel in the sky is my favorite
Do you mean howl's moving castle?
@@Maldi6667 no
8:31 me as a Persian getting excited
There is also one thing didn't mentioned.
The movie mostly happened at the right half side of the bathhouse, there is a big ass garden only shown at the left side.
There's a slight mistake. The voice actress who did the English voice of chihiros mom actually didn't eat KFC she ate an apple
Ohooo
This just proves that you don't need to over work onto something , simplicity is still the best
I don't think its a reverse much , i mean the going back home way ground has green grass while when they go there is clean ground
One thing I never got was how Chihiro knew the pigs weren't her parents?
Remember the hair tie that was given to her by Yubaba's twin sister? I think she said it will protect her from any spells, before going back to save her parents. Maybe she saw the pigs as spirits in her pov. That's my take on that.
I know the location is inspired by landscape in japan but the tea house is inspired by a tea house in location called jiufen Taiwan
Miyazaki denies this. It was inspired by the Dougo Onsen in Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture, Japan.
this was 7 days ago!! in 2020
3:35 nooooo i'm in my room alone in the dark 😭😭😭😭
I realy thinked of the kame house while i was watching
