What Golf Hybrids Should You Play? Breaking Down Hybrids With Trackman

  • Golf hybrids are important golf clubs for many golfers. They bridge the gap between the irons and the fairway woods in the set. Some golfers may have just one golf hybrid, some may have four or five.
    In this video, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell conducts some testing with four different hybrids and analyzes the data using Trackman technology. If you're unsure how many golf hybrids to have in your bag, perhaps this information can help.

    I've spent a lot of time figuring out the bags for my parents and a few others with lower swing speeds - also been fit at TXG and learned a lot. I've come up with the general bag makeup based on driver swing speed which is a pretty good place to start. There are obviously no right answers here - yes swing&skill dependant etc:
    Driver Swing Speed (DSS), Last Iron Loft (LIL), Hybrid Lofts (HL), Woods (W)
    Tees you play, DSS , LIL, HL, W
    Black Tees - 115mph, 21-degrees(3iron), no hybrids, 5&3W (18/13.5)
    Blue Tees - 105mph, 24-degrees(4-iron), 21-hybrid, 5&3W(18/15)
    White Tees - 95mph, 27-degrees(5-iron), 24-hybrid, 7&5W(21/18)
    Forward Tees - 85mph, 34-degrees(7-iron), 30-hybrid & 27-hybrid, 9&7W (24/21)
    Where I find that most people make a mistake is that most golfers will have a 3wood in their bag, and you really need to be near, at or above 100mph driver swing speed to be able to carry your 3wood further than a 5wood without a tee - and as such, most golfers below these speeds really need to be looking at 7woods and then 9woods as your swing slows further. I personally carry a 3 hybrid, but you can clearly see from this video, that even Thomas is not achieving a 45-degree land angle, and Thomas has 5mph swing speed on me - but I choose it as an easier to hit 2-iron for playing it on tight holes - and I've gapped my irons further apart creating a free club in order to do so.
    Anyways, those are my thoughts should it help anyone.

      Good info. Golfers with slow swing speeds use 3W to gain max distance for 3 shot holes, par 5 and long par 4's and even for long par 3's

      Thanks for your post Paul. I am doing the same for a Senior golfer I play with. He is using the same clubs that he bought 15+ years ago and he is now in his mid 70's. Swing speed with Driver < 85 mph. He isn't in the financial position to get fitted for new clubs.
      So far we have selected;
      A-flex 44.5" Nike Vapor Speed Driver set at 12.5 degrees/ neutral face setting.
      Cobra Fly Z 5-7 wood ( shaft at 42 " reduced from 43) A flex/ Adjust loft to fit between Driver and 4 iron distances.
      Cleveland HB Launcher Turbo A flex hybrid irons ( 5 / 24 degrees? - GW /50 degrees)
      The wedges he used still seem to be fine and his putter is gold!
      He still likes to keep the 3 Wood in his bag as a back up off the tee and to punch out of trouble.
      Having used the Cleveland HB Launcher irons, I think they are very under rated for players up to

    Really appreciate your demonstration Thomas. I currently have a 21 degree hybrid and was considering to buy an 18 degree hybrid. After seeing your demonstration, I came to the conclusion that (1) I'll definitely get much worse dispersion than you with the 18 degree hybrid and (2) I should just work on increasing my swing speed and quality of strike to maximize my 21 degree hybrid distance since the difference between an 18 and a 20 degree hybrid is only about 10 yards. Thank you again for the insightful video!

Me being a newbie, I believe i belted one straight down the line 200m plus. I think these types of clubs for players like myself a great. Thanks again for all the work. Cheers. Dann

    It would be much more beneficial if the test were conducted with a more average golf swing and swing speed. Those numbers reflect golf skill in the high range. Most everyone with swing speeds that high would be using long irons, not hybrids.. some tour pros do use hybrids but they are also very good with long irons.

    I have fallen in love with Mizuno’s JPX Fli-hi and CLK hybrids with steel shafts at the same length as their iron equivalent. I’ve actually just ordered a 29 degree to replace my 6-iron. So forgiving and easy to hit for me. I’m surprised more companies don’t approach hybrids the same way; as true iron replacement clubs.

    • @kymstock1852
      @kymstock1852 2 роки тому

      I agree Alan. I have used Cobra single length Hybrids and was impressed how easy they are to hit, especially in poor lies/ side hill lies. I still have the 19 Cobra F9 SL hybrid in my bag, and Arccos data shows that I use this almost as much as my Driver. It is so versatile. The Cobra SL are more of an iron replacement club. Lower flight, shorter carry, but accurate.
      I recently added a TS2 27 hybrid ( set at 29 flat) to replace my 6 iron. It works well. I used to have a Tour Edge E521 29 hybrid-iron-wood but found it too draw biased ( good if you slice I guess)

    I play TS2 in 23 and 27 adjusted to 26. GD ADIZ 85S in both. They're awesome. 23 at 200 and 26 at 190 fits pretty well with my 6 at 175-180. Was having trouble with 5i only going 180-185 (carry). Been in 4h for years.

      My TS2 27 is adjusted out to 29 / flat to get the carry distance I want and the shot shape control. I like the ability to adjust both loft and face angle to avoid the "over draw" of some hybrids.

    Thanks for the review. I've a question on "dynamic loft". For your test here, I don't suppose it changes if you hit different types of golf balls including range balls?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 роки тому +1

      Dynamic loft is simply the amount of loft on the golf club at impact, this can be influenced by stated loft on the club & how the golfer delivers the club to influence attack angle, how the club releases, if the face angle is open or closed and hit location. This is all at or before impact so the golf ball has no influence on dynamic loft. - Thomas

    The Maverick is still one of the best hybrids out there. If you have issues with fairway woods this is it. The Apex replaces irons better.

      I would say if you have a slower swing speed the Apex 21 works well compared to the Apex 21 Pro. It has a bigger head and the loft adjustability is a nice feature to go with the loft that works best. I have the Apex 21 4 Hybrid and love it.

    I liked this review very much. I play the Mavrik Max hybrids 3 through 7. I bought a few of them from 2nd swing and aw pleased with the condition they were in. I am senior and 18 handicapper. I played the Mavrik Max irons well but lost faith in irons. I still play the 8 & 9 irons from the set but may by an 8 hybrid. I have a Callaway Super Hybrid 17 degree that I play on occasion. I took my new Epic driver out of the bag because I was hitting the Mavrik Max 3 hybrid as far. It is not the clubs fault but mine. I would like to see a good video on the proper tee height and position for hitting the Super Hybrid off the tee.

    Honestly, what should be the longest hybrid for 20+ handicap golfers?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 роки тому

      Good question. This should all be based on your club speed and launch properties. If you don't swing very fast more loft is your friend. If you have speed you can get away with less loft on the hybrid. Less loft can lead to more distance but only if you have enough speed to keep the carry up. - Thomas

      @@2ndswing thanks, Thomas! I have a 19 deg hybrid in my bag and 170 yards is the average for my 7 iron. The problem with my swing for long clubs is inconsistency so I wonder if 21 deg hybrid (half an inch shorter) would help my cause.

    Would it make more sense to compare a 6 hybrid to a 5 iron, 5 hybrid to a 4 iron, and so on?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 роки тому +2

      There is a good chance that a 6 hybrid will give similar total numbers to a 5 iron, 5 hybrid to 4 iron and so on. However the ball will fly very differently a hybrid will fly much higher and give you better carry and stopping power. This is important as you need to make sure you gap adequately where you are making a transition from iron to hybrid in your bag. For example you may need to play a 5 iron and 5 hybrid in your bag or there may be a large gap if you go from 5iron to 4 hybrid. This will be different for everyone and I highly recommend a gapping analysis - Thomas
