I didn't carry one until I did this video. I would of never tested one in these circumstances if I were going to buy one, so I'd of never known how good they actually are! I hope that's the message people get from this video.
Gary that is the best explanation of a hybrid and its benefits I’ve heard and actually I have two fairway woods and one 24.5 deg hybrid in my bag and it has been great for gapping and has given me the best range of choice when picking what shot to hit great vid ty mate
Can you do a review on a 7 wood like who it would be good for and what kinda of situations It could be used for. Still waiting on my scotty. Lol keep up the good work.
Bravo Gaz. Great vid. I use a 3, 4, 5 hybrid. I found with using them I do not have to swing as fast to get the same distance as my long irons. Also with better accuracy.
Gary, I just wanted you to know yhat I think you are doing a bang up job with your videos and that I feel that your content is improving every time you post one! Now that said, I am the typical guy you speak about when hou talk about the benefits of hybrids as your swong sperd decreases. I am 65, almost 66 years old and had both hips replaced in 2020. That said, I am starting yo regain some strength and speed, but it will never be what it was on my 30's, 40's and even into my 50's so I have placed a 23° Titleist TS hybrid in the bag in place of my 4 iron, and hsve even gone as far as replacing my 3 iron with a TSI 2 (21°) 7 wood, and pulling my 3 wood out and going with a TSI 2 (16.5°) 4 wood and have noticed that the increased lofts on the fairway woods as well as the lower and further back CG on the hybrid have benefited me greatly with almost catching back up to pre- medical enhancement distances. So I think you are spot-on with this video! Keep up the good work Sir!
I’ve a 21 degree in the bag and struggled to hit it but seeing the ball position, I can see why. Great video and will try on the course the weekend 👍🏼👏🏻👏🏻
i have 2 hybrids...26 and 34 degree.......and a 5 wood and a 7 wood....love them all.....they are PING G425's......great video thx...cheers from Canada
Have replaced my 4 & 5 irons with Hybrids , 22 and 24, best thing I ever did, play out of rough, on fairway, and even at times off the tee on long par 3, s . Would recommend these clubs to everyone out there, again great content Gaz, keep them coming buddy
Great video! My friends thought I was crazy when I got a rescue club a few years ago then changed their minds after buying a few rounds paying off their bets. I'm going to practice the shot you showed today. I imagine it will send a few more free pints my way.
I've got 2 hybrids which replaced my 3&4 irons some tears ago. They are absolutely brilliant from a wide variety of lies, off the tee on longish par 3's and I've developed technique for using them around the green. Lofts are 20&23 degrees
I play 4 iron and 21 degree hybrid and dropped my 5 wood for the exact reason of the video versatile and haven't looked back its ace out of the rough (where I spend quite a bit of time) and great on long par 3s, as always great content that just makes sense keep it going
I was fitted into a 4 hybrid when I recently went for new clubs. I was surprised as I strike the Long irons reasonably well. However I did find the hybrid was very good out of the semi rough. I am however keeping a 3 iron in the bag from my old set as I strike it very good on fairways and like it for the par 5s.
another great vid Gary, got 26 degree ping g410 go to club from 175/ 180 , then 7 wood up 200 , great in rough ( so gets used loads !!) you dont have to try and smash it , just swing it and it works a treat
Hang on did you just read my mind? Literally today I've been reading up on Hybrids, from the basics, how to hit, which ones are currently recommended. I'm looking for a 4i and maybe a 5i replacement Hybrid. No one so far has said anything remotely about stronger Lofts, as you have, that's really useful information, cheers.
Perfect timing Gaz just got my G425 hybrid today! First hybrid ever 👍 got it as a 4 iron replacement as I struggled off the fairway with the iron although I could nail it off a tee.
Bought a 21 degree hybrid (H2 816) to rotate with my 3 iron, although it turned out that in terms of distance it's more similar to my 18 degree Srixon U65 utility!!! In fact the hybrid is even a bit longer.... I tend to rotate these two clubs, putting the U65 in the bag when it's needed more off the tee as I'm not keen on using the hybrid off the tee. Whereas for approaches to par 5's I prefer the hybrid (easier control and stopping power). Interestingly, the other day I put both in the bag as I was playing a course where I couldn't see me needing a 3 iron....and I used them both!
Good point about the lofts, i was fitted for TM rescue of 19 and 21 never did hit them from poor lies well ! Now i know why perhaps or maybe i am just crap !!
Great stuff you make. I carry a 5H (26˚) and 7FW (22˚) to make golf life easier. I used to have 3H and 4H in previous sets. A low lofted hybrid is useful for putting from just outside the green. Can you do a bunker series (4 part?), from basic techniques to advanced techniques, club choices, and difficult lies (just inside back lip, under front lip, downslope, upslope). A similar series on chipping, pitching, or putting would help us too.
I wish I’d seen this message sooner! Sorry it’s taken me 2 years to reply! Hope your 4 hybrid is still going well, and I’ve made note of the bunker demos 👌🏼
I would like to see a video on hitting a wide variety of hybrids, like a #7 thru a #3. Looking at distance, swing thoughts, and how they perform in different lies.. I'm moving into hybrids more now, but I am struggling a bit with them.
Hi, I have 2 hybrids in de bag 26 & 22 to replace my 5&4 iron. Not so much due to slow swing speed (105mph on driver), for me it just sooooo much easier to hit.
Another video full of great advice thanks Gary, I've just swapped out my 22 degree hybrid and put my 18 degree 5 Wood back in, it seemed to suit well at the weekend had my best round since golf came back 👍
Great content again your 3 wood tip has changed my game please Gary do basic bunker tips that is my Downfall I go in one and I have no idea what I am supposed to do
I waffle between my 5/6 iron, and 5/6 hybrids. I will take just those 4 clubs to the range and keep track of what happens. Good video, gave me a pause for thoughts. ⛳🏌️♀️
@@Chris_UES I voice noted my friend after one I did a week back after counting about 6 in 20 seconds. It was an absolute joke! I just forgot when I recorded this one to stop doing it. I'll try to remember next time 👌
Absolutely great informative video.....I had this thought process last month whereby I was thinking do I need a 5 wood or 2 Hybrid just to fill the gap between my G410 3 wood and 4 iron......After lots of thinking and brain hurting, I went for the G410 5 wood lofted up 1.5 degrees. I hit it a lot better than the Hybrid and feel more comfortable. Its all about confidence
Put a 22° in the bag last year, it’s a good second shot club over water on a hole on the course. But, I’m finding I use it to put more balls in the water than I ever did with a 3 iron. They all seem so draw biased that I end up pushing the ball right just fighting the hook. Thinking this year I’m going back to a 3 iron and just chipping up.
Fair enough, I guess if youve lost confidence with the hybrid, and you are more confident with an iron, you may aswell play the club that gives you positive thoughts.
I need to play them in the 19-22° range. The one I played was a Ping i25 and was great when I got it right. Maybe it’s worth the effort to try some of the newer ones to see if it would help. Great content, keep it up.
Great video Gary. Keep em coming. I've never been able to hit hybrids well, at least not consistently. Most of the time it's a nasty hook. I'm looking to put a 7 wood in the bag again, but I'll give your technique a try and see if maybe I could use a hybrid instead. Much easier to find hybrids in lefty than 7 woods. Maybe a comparison video on course of hybrid & 7 wood would be worth doing. I've seen a studio one, but we all know that it's different on the real grass with the elements. Thanks for always staying real Gary. It's good to know that we can always be pleasantly surprised when trying clubs.
If you struggle with longer irons, in your position I'd be looking for a 7wd / 21 hybrid or 9wd/ 24* hybrid, whichever you're most confident playing. Love the idea! I am one hundred percent going to show the difference on the course between fairway and hybrid with awkward lies 👌
That's a fair reason 👌 guess it gives you a 5wd strength for par 5s. Maybe worth Considering a more versatile one to sit along side it for awkward shots if you have room in the bag. 21 or 24, doesn't even have to replace a long iron if you like them
I can try yes, it would be a good experimental video, if the slopes not too severe it may be okay, but If too severe, it could be a 7 / 8 iron and take your medicine. I’ll see what I can do 🤟🏼
Bought a hybrid of 17 degree during lockdown 1 and totally agree with you that the loft is to low. Could you do a video on the basic of driving set up and technique as I think it what most of us forget about and get in to bad habits.
Thanks again Gary, not long now until new clubs arrive. The shaft option is a stiffer regular so bloody typical of me to be neither one thing or the other. I have a new place opened near me with an indoor range so gapping session will be in place to see if I need anything between the strong 5i and 5w I use off the fairway. These tips will probably come in quite handy if I can find one I like the look of. Also MASSIVE thank you for the chipping tips as the lob wedge isn't quite 60 degrees hot but close enough to use over bunkers etc without too much fear and my chipping is sooo much better. Although still really looking forward to the new 52 coming. Have you thought about a simple course management guide, you could segment it, tee box, fairway, rough, chipping and how to read the green?
I’ve got a 19 degree and I love it, looking at getting a 21 degree next as my irons start at 5, never been able to hit a 3 or 4 iron but can rip my hybrid 215 metres comfortably. What a strange game is golf 😂
I took the 3 wood out of my bag. I adjusted my 5 wood to 16° and my hybrid to 19°. High cut stops, boring draw runs. I like my 4 wedges. Thats where I score.
Another great vid Gary. Demonstrating the benefits of hybrids really well there. I don't carry one myself but should as my lowest iron (4) is inconsistent. I'm good with the 5 iron but there is gap there between that and my 5 wood.
I have an 18° Ping hybrid that went in the bag because it was draw biased. However, I am thinking of going back to my 5 wood as my flight shape has now changed and it gives me extra height when required.
Great video. I think a lot of us struggle with the hybrid, as we're not sure what lofts to use. The ball positioning tip, is a great one, which I'll test out. 👍
Great content Gary. Never really thought about my 17 degree Hybrid been the same as a 5 wood. I struggle with the 17 so might look at swapping for a wood now I've seen this.
Thanks Gary. Very informative video. I'm getting to the age where I may start considering hybrids for longer irons so I appreciate the information. As far as video ideas, I was thinking that since you have done videos with James Robinson a few times then maybe you and him might consider a 1v1 for a few holes as one video. I really enjoy both of your guys channels and think a 1v1 match or stroke play video would be fun. You both seem like great guys so it might be fun. Thanks again Gary.
Great demonstration and explanation, keep it up really enjoying your content. Shame about the rules with Jules ending, you could have just stated that these were for R&A rules.
To me, the only reason to be playing 3, 4 or even 5 irons, especially if they are strong-lofted like most irons these days, is if you play in a place that is windy. Even PGA Tour pros aren't hitting a lot of long irons anymore. I agree with you on hybrids less than 20 degrees - those type of lofts are for fairway woods with longer shafts to help get the ball airborne. I am a 2 hcp and I carry a 17.5 degree 5W, a 20.5 degree 7W, a 22 degree hybrid, and a 26 degree hybrid. The irons start at 6-iron. I will NEVER go back to hitting 3,4 or 5 iron as long as hybrids exist. They are one of top 2 or 3 best golf innovations ever.
Great video. I love learning how to hit certain shots I gave a video suggestion, I don’t know if it’s been done before. How about the affect different styles of golf shoes have on your game. For example I used to wear adidas tour 360 xt. The shoes had a heel. Last year I changed to code chaos , I found my putting was a lot better. I don’t know if anyone else would be interested in such a video. But it’s an idea. Keep up the great work
Hi Gary, another good video! For future content, how about hitting fades and draws with say a 3-wood to help average handicappers hit fairways off the tee? Thanks
Hey, thanks for the great message. I think I should do a video yes, I'm not totally against low lofted hybrids, but I think you lose the versatility with them. If your only going to carry one, I think a 24 or 21 is so much more of a ulility than a 19 or 17. I think at this point, would a mid to high Handicapper should start to move into fairways, or atleast try and compare them. As a low Handicapper, a think a 2 iron 19 could be an option or even stronger if the golfer can't hit fairway woods. I used to use a 15, so I'm abit of a hypocrite 🤦♂️🤣 #sonartec
Great content Gary I always use a hybrid it’s made my 4 iron redundant mainly because I can use it reliably and its also handy around the green using a putting stroke for chip and run from just off the green 👍
My hybrids replace my 3,4,5 irons…as a senior golfer with slower swing speeds they are awesome. So much easier to hit than long irons. It’s very confusing to understand when there’s so many people having differences of opinions. I say just choose whatever your most comfortable with..that’s the bottom line isn’t it….✌🏼✌🏼
I've been playing a 23° Hybrid instead of the 4i from my set for quite some time now. Much easier to hit for a high handicap golfer like me, easier to get the ball in the air.
Nice class Gaz I just picked up the new apex combos and did get a 4 iron but may put in a apex pro hybrid instead Maybe do another video and show the difference between the manufactures models or have James join you and have a hybrid match
I have sim 19 and i hit average 180 then sim 22 average 165 then titleist 27 average 140- 155. then m6 31 for my bump and run 115-130 shots. only use sim irons 7-pw which is 145 down to 110. Today I just finished my 15th round this season, goal is 200 by october. I still can't figure out my irons. I hit good when I dont try and when I think about grip and everything I slice.
That question is a bag of worms, swing speed, kick point and weights. These are words I've heard of but don't understand, have a look at TXG to get an idea of how much is involved.
I think as below, its not one type fits all. If it's too costly or you don't have facilities to get a custom fit, you could always send me a video of your swing and ball flight on social media and Ill do my best to help advise.
Really interesting Gaz. My current clubs go to 5 iron and for that extra club I've been thinking four iron or 4 hybrid. Seeing this has probably made my mind up, I'm thinking the hybrid is going to be easier to hit and more versatile in my bag. Now you've shown hybrid off the surface, is there a difference to playing off the tee, height of tee, set up etc. Thanks for a great video as always 👍
I use a hybrid in place of my 3 & 4 irons My 4 hybrid I play like a 7 iron and my 3 hybrid I play like a 5 iron ie My 3 hybrid is played as you advise and has a tendency to draw and my swing is more of a sweep than down. My 4 hybrid gives me super height and usually dead straight from middle of my stance (maybe one ball width nearer lead foot) and my swing is more like an iron swing.
I haven't tried using a hybrid before, but I think I might try some hybrids this summer to replace my Titliest 690 CB 4 iron that I am currently gaming. I find that that I get punished on my mishits too much, so it might be time to switch over to a hybrid to see if it us more forgiving.
My new 5 wood just does not go the distance , so I will bring back the 3H, glad I did not trade it in. I am surprised you say to hit down on the Woods slightly but Sweep the the hybrid, I will try this this weekend.
The majority of my bag is hybrids 18 -31 degree. Easier to hit easier to distance
I don't carry a 3 wood
Sounds like you're already converted 👌🙌
@@garymartingolf million percent mate. I can adjust my swing based on lie and distance

31 degree for what distance. Repkace pitching?
I absolutely adore my hybrid. 20 degree Mavrik Pro hybrid, love the look down at the ball, and the versatility is unbeatable

Just bought a second hand ping G15 hybrid 21 degree. On the range I’m hitting it ok. Once on the course I’ll see how it goes.
Good luck with it bud, could do with trying to hit afew out of different lies like I did, build up your Confidence 💯
@@garymartingolf yeah that’s true. Difficult that where I go it’s off matts and no grass driving range.
Alrite Gaz I have a 3 wood and 19 hybrid. Might consider swapping to a 5 wood and 22 hybrid after watching this
Great video again Gary, maybe shot tracer would have added to it so we could see the flight of the ball?
Nice one Gary could you do one on pitching with a 56 degree wedge
Yes, no problem 👍
I’ve got a 19 degree and I love it, looking at getting a 21 degree next as my irons start at 5, never been able to hit a 3 or 4 iron but can rip my hybrid 215 metres comfortably. What a strange game is golf 😂
That's brilliant, well the 21 will only be easier! Get it in the bag 🙌
I took the 3 wood out of my bag. I adjusted my 5 wood to 16° and my hybrid to 19°. High cut stops, boring draw runs. I like my 4 wedges. Thats where I score.
Glad you've sorted the top end 👌
I have a 5 Hybrid but not consistent with it, will give the set up a go!
Brilliant, hope it helps
Another great vid Gary. Demonstrating the benefits of hybrids really well there.
I don't carry one myself but should as my lowest iron (4) is inconsistent. I'm good with the 5 iron but there is gap there between that and my 5 wood.
23 or 21 😬.. See if you can try a mates just to get a feel 😎
True, I'm going to do a manual distance gapping session soon. Something we can all do 👌
@@garymartingolf look forward to that one. It's definitely one I need..👍
Great content Gary. Never really thought about my 17 degree Hybrid been the same as a 5 wood. I struggle with the 17 so might look at swapping for a wood now I've seen this.
You'll find a 21 or 23 so much more usufel 💯
Thanks Gary. Very informative video. I'm getting to the age where I may start considering hybrids for longer irons so I appreciate the information. As far as video ideas, I was thinking that since you have done videos with James Robinson a few times then maybe you and him might consider a 1v1 for a few holes as one video. I really enjoy both of your guys channels and think a 1v1 match or stroke play video would be fun. You both seem like great guys so it might be fun. Thanks again Gary.
Thanks Joey, I'm living with James atm, so that shouldnt be too hard to organise 👌 I'll see if he's free this weekend 👌
i have a 24 degree 4h but cant hit it at all, so i will definitely be trying this
Good stuff
Thanks Gary. Great video and great insight into the lofts of the hybrids in the bag. Wish I'd seen this before my Pro sold me my 18⁰ back in the day 😂
I've done it, instead of a 5 Wood.. Then ended up with a hybrid not great for launching out the semi rough and awkward lies.
👍🏻great explanation
Thanks James
Great video. I love learning how to hit certain shots
I gave a video suggestion, I don’t know if it’s been done before.
Thanks
Thank you Gary, maybe worth hitting some to determine if they suit me.
100% try one, and from a range of lies compared to a long iron.
You seem to be against the idea of using hybrid with
Hey, thanks for the great message.
Just started using a hybrid , really like out of first cut of rough👍
Good stuff Kev
l ve always carried a 21 deg fairway wood.Real handy from rough.
Great stuff 👌
Great video gaz, how a bout doing one with a hybrid bump and run.... Brilliant for this type of shot. 👍
Yeah. Maybe you could do it for us if it's a shot you play, get you on the channel
Great content Gary I always use a hybrid it’s made my 4 iron redundant mainly because I can use it reliably and its also handy around the green using a putting stroke for chip and run from just off the green 👍
I carry an old wilson flybrid 24 degrees and use it as a rescue club any were on the golf course from tee to in the trees hard ground or long grass
I remember these. Are they abit bigger than a normal hybrid??
Another fantastic video !
I have a sim hybrid but am considering swapping it for a G425 7 wood
If you're more confident with fairways then by all means. Some golfers just have more confidence in a striking a fairway wood.
Great video Gary
Thanks
Really good video Gary
My hybrids replace my 3,4,5 irons…as a senior golfer with slower swing speeds they are awesome. So much easier to hit than long irons. It’s very confusing to understand when there’s so many people having differences of opinions. I say just choose whatever your most comfortable with..that’s the bottom line isn’t it….✌🏼✌🏼
Glad you’re enjoying them. After the 3 hybrid, do you go 7 wood to 5 wood?
@@garymartingolf , 5 wood.
Cheers Gaz great info, should get my hybrid out more often than I do..
Can we have some tips on bunker play??. It’s the shot I hate, card wrecker 😩😡
It's scheduled for Friday bud 👌
I've been playing a 23° Hybrid instead of the 4i from my set for quite some time now. Much easier to hit for a high handicap golfer like me, easier to get the ball in the air.
Nice move 👏🏽👏🏽
My Maverick 18 degree Hybrid 3 is my club for190- 200 yards and is very reliable. My 15 degree 3 wood goes 200-220 so the gap is fine there
Is the 18h better than a 5 wood for you ?
4 hybrid in the bag 21degree , my go to club 👍🏻
Nice class Gaz I just picked up the new apex combos and did get a 4 iron but may put in a apex pro hybrid instead
Maybe do another video and show the difference between the manufactures models or have James join you and have a hybrid match
Another good video Gaz!
I game t100s to 6 iron, 5 hybrid at 24.5° then fairway woods at 21.75° and 16.5° with a u510 at 3 iron
Getting on the range tomorrow after this
Good stuff 👌
Which shaft to use all the way down the bag including putter? Say for mid-handicappers.
Nice one Gaz 👍
I use a hybrid in place of my 3 & 4 irons
My 4 hybrid I play like a 7 iron and my 3 hybrid I play like a 5 iron ie My 3 hybrid is played as you advise and has a tendency to draw and my swing is more of a sweep than down. My 4 hybrid gives me super height and usually dead straight from middle of my stance (maybe one ball width nearer lead foot) and my swing is more like an iron swing.
Great video gaz again
Thanks
I haven't tried using a hybrid before, but I think I might try some hybrids this summer to replace my Titliest 690 CB 4 iron that I am currently gaming. I find that that I get punished on my mishits too much, so it might be time to switch over to a hybrid to see if it us more forgiving.
My new 5 wood just does not go the distance , so I will bring back the 3H, glad I did not trade it in. I am surprised you say to hit down on the Woods slightly but Sweep the the hybrid, I will try this this weekend.
Good stuff. I don't say hit down on the woods, well I hope I didn't 😅 Both fairway and hybrid should be shallow angles of attack.
@@garymartingolf just replayed it, you are right must have been another YT vlog, thanks
