Hello Dr. Lee. Thank you so much for your videos. I watched this one right before my clinical and a couple others but this was one of my skills and I followed the video and passed my clinical. Received my certificate yesterday! Thanks for your content❤ Much love from Mckinney, TX
Hello Dr. Lee. I took my clinical test yesterday, 1/07/2023, and we’ve started the new year on a good note! I passed my test!!! I’ve watched your videos, read along with the CNA checklist, and I practiced them. My skills were this one, transitioning, and respiration. Thank you so much! While I was waiting to take my test, 3 other students were watching you too (plus me). Therefore, thank you for your helpful videos. May God bless you everywhere you go, thank you for helping us out! 🙏🏽
Hi Dr. Lee, Do you know if oral skills are being tested in Texas yet? I'm taking my clinical skills test for the 3rd time Tuesday :/ and wonder if I need to study for those skills too. Thanks!
I take my test Friday. So when you put dirty linen in linen basket after denture care do you need to actually wash hands again or just tell them you wash your hands. If I did just wash them after disposing dirty linen before coming back to open curtain and offer call light would that still be ok? Just want to make sure
Hello, The candidate is grading on the handwashing skill with the very FIRST skill. After the first skill, the candidate should ONLY tell the evaluator that he/she is washing their hands. Do Not Go and Wash Your Hands Under Water.
I'm finally going to take my state boards in a few weeks but its been 8 months since i took my course and i took it under the red cross but now am doing my boards under prometric is there a differnce in the way you teach things? like i noticed you did not check for an I.D. tag is that required for all patients?
Dr. Lee do it matter when we come back and do the closing with our residents would it been wrong if I would have did that before I put everything back? Like asking her if she need anything and than putting it everything a way? Also do it matter if you give that call light with the same gloves you have on like could have got a paper towel so I could give my resident the call light so I wouldn't have to touch it with dirty gloves like would prometric take off for that?
Hi, Dr lee I heard that positioning, feeding, dentures and mouth care are not being texting on because of COVID is that true I’m taking my exam in a few weeks
Hello DK, I can only speak for the state of TEXAS on 9-21-2022. So, as of today in TX Prometric is still not testing the oral skills which are mouth care/brushing the teeth, denture care, and feeding.
Heyy Doctor Lee , me and my classmate are preparing to take the exam this Friday and we were wondering how would you go about the steps of the patient has top and bottom dentures?
Hello, When taking the state exam, you will be graded under indirect care for communicating with the patient. So, at some point during the skill, you MUST tell the client who you are, why you are in the room, ask if the client has any needs, how the client is feeling, etc... You don't have to speak to the client when you are away from the bedside setting up your supplies or cleaning up.
Dr. Lee, I will be testing in NM and I'm required to wear a mask. Do you know if mouth care and feeding are tested in this state? 2-Thank you so much for your videos, thank you for taking the time to teach us, these videos are great! God bless you!
Hello Gwen, Prometric is now testing the oral skills (denture care, brushing the teeth, and feeding). The student must have a mask on when performing these skills.
Hi Dr.Lee, should there be a regular toothpaste and a denture paste for this skill? Or you’re supposed to use the “denture paste” on the toothette as well for a patient that doesn’t have teeth?
Hello Shea, for the denture care skill, a student may use both. To brush the dentures at the sink, the student can use regular tooth paste or a denture cleaning agent. For the oral care, which is the second part of the skill, the student would use tooth paste.
Dr. Lee I stay in New York State we have to wear a mask on test day so do you think we will still need to know all skills even though we have on a mask. I been studying all of them but I read that in the state of Texas they haven't been doing it over the past few years jus thought I ask to see if you might happen to know?
Hello, Prometric will have masks available for the students to use on test day. In Texas, the student is permitted to wear a mask for the oral skills (denture care, brushing the teeth, and feeding). Wearing a mask is a good idea with COVID rates increasing.
Hello, Please look at Step 12 for this skill. It will state that TOOTHPASTE is required. 11 Protect resident’s clothing before providing mouth care and remove protective cover when care is completed? 12 Provide mouth care cleaning upper and lower gums, using moistened foam-tipped applicator or toothbrush with toothpaste?
Hello Michael, This is one skill. The student is asked to clean the patient's dentures and to clean the mouth. In a real setting, the nurse would actually clean the mouth before placing the dentures back into the client's mouth. I teach the student to clean the mouth with swabs. Prometric has a different skill for brushing the client's teeth with toothpaste.
Thank you for your last reply on your other video. I do have another question. For the sink barrier and patient barrier, does it matter if it is a washrag or towel? Thank you for these videos!
@txcnaskills For the test do i have to get a toothettte specifically? or can it be a toothbrush{for mouthwashing)? Also, for the dentures can it be just a regular toothbrush? Does the denture paste have to be labeled "denture paste"?
Hello Eliza, I will post the skills checklist below. Pay attention to the skill for denture care on page 7-8. www.prometric.com/sites/default/files/NAClinicalSkillsChecklist.pdf 1. Step seven tell use to use toothpaste 2. Step 12 gives us the choice of using a tooth brush or a toothette when cleaning our partners mouth with this skill. 3. Prometric never mentions denture paste. So, I would not use it 4. Prometric does not state the toothpaste has to be labeled. That behavior is a Pearson Vue thing.
Hello Oyin, During the Prometric skills exam the denture will NOT be in the resident's mouth. The dentures will be in a cup on the bedside table or chest. After cleaning the dentures, you will return the dentures back to the place you found them.
Hello Lady Bird, If you use a towel to line the sink, the towel is placed into the dirty linen hamper. If you use paper towels to line the sink, the paper towel is placed in the trash.
Hello question from Austin Texas, I’m getting ready for my state exam I’m just wondering are there a specific set of skills they’re going to be texsting you on, or are they going to be random from all the 22 testable skills??
Hello M Hinton, In Texas, Prometric is testing on 19 skills. The skills are all random and you wont know which skills you have until just before you start your actual test. Texas is not testing on the oral skills because the candidates MUST keep their mask on at all times. (The skills currently not being tested are Feeding, Denture care, and brushing the teeth) Good luck with your exam.

Hi Dr. Lee,

Hello Samash, as of September 12, 2022 the oral skills are not being tested in Texas.

Hello Kimberly, Under Prometric guidelines the student is not required to check ID tags/armbands.
Hi Dr Lee, thank you for a great video. Do you know if TX is testing on Oral skills yet?
Hello Nerm, AS of today, 8-18-2022, Prometric is NOT testing on the oral skills.

Hello, The student only has to clean one denture, either the top or the bottom. You will not have to clean both.
Do we need to talk to the patient as we are setting up or cleaning? Or is it okay to be silent

Hi doctor Lee what are the most common skills to come on the exam
The skills are random. A computer will randomly pick skills for each student.
Ok thanks for your reply
Dr. Lee, is this not two separate tasks, or is it now all one task (both dentures and oral care).
Hello Michael, This is one skill. The student is asked to clean the patient's dentures and to clean the mouth. In a real setting, the nurse would actually clean the mouth before placing the dentures back into the client's mouth. I teach the student to clean the mouth with swabs.
