- According to Texas Prometric Skills Guidelines using a transfer/gait belt. This skill is one of the 21 testable skills on the Texas State CNA Exam. Remember to include indirect care with this skill. You will start this skill with the client sitting in a chair.

@@txcnaskills2599 It's very helpful! I just wanted to clarify would it be walking them 10 steps forward and 10 steps back or 5 steps forward and 5 steps back for a total of 10? Sorry I overthink so much haha

Glad you like them!
Thank you for making it such a visual learning experience
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much Dr. Lee. I will be doing my exams i a week time, i was thought to put on the transfer belt from the back of the patient.
Oh My!!!!!
Yes and that is the way I was taught as well from the back bc it's folded up and you gently slide it from behind while the patient has his arms on your shoulders!
Thank you Dr.!
You are so welcome Rebecca.
Thank you doctors for this a lot of information pls I want to ask a questions if the client shoes did not tie can CNA staff tie it for her?
Hello Angela, It is the responsibility of the candidate testing to make sure the patient has their shoes tied before starting to walk. This is a safety issue. Think about if you had a two year old child. You would make sure the baby had his or her shoe laces tied before they started to walk for safety, correct. This is the same thing we must do to keep the elderly patient safe. Great question.
Dr lee, you are one of the best 👍
Thanks Ngozi. This is one way I can give back to my profession.
Hello I think I’m having a brain fart with the curtain part.. does the skill need to end with the privacy curtain open or closed? Thank you!
Hello Lisa, We should end the skill with the privacy curtain closed. The candidate knocks on the patient's door, enters the room, explains why he/she is there, closes the privacy curtain before care is provided. Therefore, when the skill is completed, the student will open the privacy curtain.
The patient is fully dressed, so the curtain can be left open either way. Curtain should be closed all the way around, blinds, and door also when providing care. She covered everything 100 percent in this video. Next one should be, ambulating with an assistive device.

Hi Dr Lee. My question is. If a mistake or two is made during the CNA skills. Would I fail the complete CNA skills ? Sandra, NY. Thanks for your time.
Hello Dr. Lee , would this video be the same for Credentia - Skill 3, assists to ambulate using a transfer belt? Thank you for your help.
Are we supposed to check their ID bracelet? If so, is it upon entering room or after washing hands?
Hello Ari,
Checking an armband or ID is not required during the CNA exam.
What are the different categories for the 3 skills we are tested on? 1 mobility, 1 measurable and what else? Love these videos! Hate I found them the day before me test! I think I am testing at your school in the morning!! Thank you for posting these!!
Hello Jennifer,
The categories are ADLs, Measurement, and ROM
@@txcnaskills2599 thank you so much! Super nervous but your videos are helping so much!
Thank you Dr
You are so welcome Eme.
Thank you so much very good.
Most welcome
Thank you so much for this im currently at work
Now studying for my stna test and I came across this
Welcome Just Tre to my channel. A lot of students have found this site very helpful. Let me know if you have any questions about the Prometric skills.
Great job, my question is what if the nurse aide is taller than the patient, do the patient still need to touch the aide's shoulder?
Hello Barakat, Prometric does not say the client needs to touch the candidate's arm or shoulders. I have the patient touch my shoulders or arms just so that they have something to hold on to when lifting the person up.
Do you have to wash your hands as soon as you enter the room (or )after you told the patient what you will be doing?
Hello Vinodini, I teach my students to wash their hands after speaking to the client and BEFORE gathering your clean supplies.
Dr u are great my question what of the patient can not to tiry his or her shoe what would the CNA do?
As healthcare workers, we would tie the shoes for the client.
Ty so much for these videos!! One question i will take my exam on nyc can I use this way?
I just checked the internet, and New York City uses Prometric. So, yes you can.
Is the belt just for lifting and balance? What do you do if patient feels weak during a walk. What to do with the belt????
Hello, The belt is to hold the client up.
Dr Lee when asking client to sit you don’t have to wait a few seconds to allow circulation to take place so client don’t get dizzy?
Hello Carmen, When walking a client back to their chair, it is NOT necessary to wait for the client to feel better. The healthcare worker will ask questions BEFORE starting to walk the client.
Can you clarify? I thought with change to Prometric, we were assisting to ambulate with client starting and returning to a chair. Is this correct or can anyone that has tested with Prometric in Texas clarify?
Hello Michelle,
Students testing through Prometric will have the client sitting in a chair as the starting position for Assisting with Ambulation. I think this is stressed at 11:23 in the video. Thanks for asking.
You are amazing I love y’all
Thanks Dare Bear.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
hello! im taking my exam Tuesday, I was wondering if you knew if some skills are being omitted due to covid?
Hello Kateavalentine, I can only speak for the state of Texas. When student test in Texas they are REQUIRED to keep a face mask on at all time. Therefore, the oral skills are not tested during the COVID epidemic (Brushing teeth, Denture care, and Feeding) in Texas. I am not sure when the state of Texas will add these back in for testing. I hope this helps.
@@txcnaskills2599 thank you so much!!! I am testing in Texas so that helped a ton.
Dr.Lee, do we need have gloves on while ambulating?
Hello, Gloves are not required when ambulating a client for this skill.
Thank you, Dr.Lee
Hello there. Love watching your videos it’s helps so much . My test is on Tuesday . Do you know if they are doing mouth care due to Covid. It’s April 3,2022
Hello Kimberly, As of today, 4-3-22 Prometric is not doing the oral skills in Texas.
@@txcnaskills2599 okay thank you
Are some skills still being omitted due to covid?
Hello Yara, As of May 9, 2022, in Texas, we are still omitting the oral skills.
Doctor lee, I notice you didn't do introduce yourself when you enter the resident room,is that ok
Hello Linda, It is never correct to not introduce yourself when entering a resident room. My apologies.
I will be taking my CNA soon I hope and y I will pass it
Hello Winifred, I am sure you will do well. Take care.
Hello, I'm currently taking CNA classes and quick question. Aren't we supposed to use gloves anytime we make contact with a patient?
Hello Brother, Gloves are not required every time we make patient contact. For example, I may not use gloves when taking a pulse or blood pressure.
Are we supposed wearing gloves in this skills since we are touching the client?
No, you aren’t touching bare skin on their private parts or broken skin. So no gloves needed. Keep in mind that these vids are for the Prometric, real world scenarios are different.
@@Damndrrtyapes thanks
Very well stated, Thanks
Thanks Doctor for this video, but I that most time when your knock on the patient's door u don't wait to hear come in before entering the room. Ple explain.
Hello Helena, I don't wait for someone to answer because not all patients are going to be able to speak. Some patients may have had a stroke and can't speak clearly. Knocking is a sign of respecting the patient's rights for privacy and announcing my presence.
Prometric requires us to announce self or knock before entering room ONLY. We don't have to wait for a response. Great question.
@@txcnaskills2599 Thank you. I appreciate your answer 👍
hy Dr ree ,,is this skill number 3?? thank you
Hello, Yes, this is the 3rd skill.
If it is 10 steps is it 5steps forward then 5 steps back? Or is it a full 10 steps forward and 10 steps back?
Hello Jennifer, The resident will take 10 steps forward and ten steps back to their chair.
I take my skills tomorrow morning 😮 I'm nervous
You got this!
@@txcnaskills2599 I passed both because of you, thank you ❤️
Hi Dr Lee I’m testing in Texas are they now testing for oral skills?
not yet.
If the person have strock on one side how to transfer them
Do we need gloves for this skill?
Hello Tamara, Gloves are not required for the ambulation skill.
❤❤❤thank you
Love back at ya.
How many fingers you got underneath the belt ?
I place four. Prometric doesn't have a requirement for the number of fingers under a belt.
Please Maam . What should u expect. Im in MD
Hello, I just checked the website and Maryland use Credentia to sponsor the nurse aide exam.
hello again where should the buckle be when using the gait belt
Hello Raquel, There are two types of gait belts. If you are using the one with teeth, then the teeth should be against the body.
So the belt.with teeth the buckle part is it aligned to a body part? Then tighten at that point?
@@raquelserranogarcia Hello Raquel,
The buckle is in front of the person. It is in the center of the abdomen.
@@txcnaskills2599 ok got it
@@raquelserranogarcia Great Raquel. I wish you the best on your exam.
Is this works for washington state too?
Hello, MG, yes, Prometric tests in the state of Washington.
Your not doing your indirect skills like bed wglheels are locked the bed is in safe low position for resident now washing hands and gathering supplies, why?
Hello, checking the bed is NOT a part of the indirect skill. Where did you see that as a step for indirect care.
Don’t you have to check her ID band first before you wash your hands and get your equipments ?
Hello, Checking the armband is not a step for this skill. Did you see that written down in your booklet?
@@txcnaskills2599 well, the teacher in my class said you should check the patient armband first to make sure you assist the right person 😂😂sooo that’s why im watching your videos to see if he was correct but your videos skills are very different from what he taught us .sigh
Hi dr. Lee at the last part she is sitting on the bed then the skills is done and my questions Is , is she not laid her body in bed again before skills is done.?
Hello Aiko, If you are testing under Prometric guidelines the client will start off sitting in a chair. I only demonstrated assisting the patient from the bed because of a request. In the clinical skills checklist, Prometric notifies that the candidate will assist the patient to ambulate from a chair and return the client to a chair.
@@txcnaskills2599 wow great information thank u so much 🥰
Did they change things ? I was told to have the patient use your arms. Never the shoulders
Hello Jonathan, It is a personal choice where the patient places their arm.
In MA we also need a wilchair just in case.
I just checked Prometric guidelines for MA, and the use of a wheelchair is not required. Can you please send me the link that shows using a wheelchair is a state requirement? From my knowledge, all Prometric skill guidelines are the same nationally.
