  • This month celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Persona, and all month long I've been talking about how much I love this franchise, but I haven't yet gone over why I love it. So to close out our month long celebration of the series, allow me to deep dive into why this series means so much to me.

It teaches actual life lessons, the characters are realistic and some of the best written I’ve ever experienced, the combat and dungeon crawling is smooth, the UI is slick, what isn’t to love?

Persona is one of those game franchise that I’ve always wanted to get into, but never did because of how much time I’d have to sink in. But, I’m glad that there exists a video about why this franchise is so great.

I've been wondering about trying the franchise out, but never got a "good" reason. Most of the responses I got/found were about how much people love the loop. This is the first major review of the franchise that's really focused on the emotional side of the franchise.

Persona: Everyone has different ideas and struggles inside them but we cool.
Shin Megami Tensei: Everyone has different ideas but within those ideas my not go with the other so we ain't cool.
For both: What do you think? Because you are the protagonist so choose. I didn't say it's going to be good or easy either.
      Think about it.

Other things that I can talk about with the Social Links in Persona 3 is some of the Social Links in that game actually end with the person you've been hanging out with leaving for a new place, even though you've grown to really like that person and you enjoy hanging out with them, or in the case of Bebe, he returns to France to show to his uncle the kimono he's made with the help of your support, and even though he finally convinced his uncle to let him return to Japan, he decided to stay in France for very understandable reasons, you learn this from a letter he sends to the school for you at the very end in the game. Yeah, it sucks to see a person you've grown such a tight bond with and you enjoy hanging out with so much, only for them to end up leaving you because they have to transfer to a new school or live with a family far away, but things like that does happen in real life as even I had to deal with this sorta thing when I was at school. In fact, Ann actually had to deal with this in Persona 5 with her friend, Shiho, whom early in the game, she tried to commit suicide because of what Kamoshida had put her though and she did manage to recover from that in the hospital, but she still has metaphorical scars from the experience and even though Kamoshida had his heart changed and is no longer a problem at the school, her attempt to kill herself is pretty much going to affect her reputation at Shujin, even with the main source of the problem dealt with. Which is why she decided to move to a new school far away, even if it means having to leave Ann behind and say goodbye to her. But even if the person ends up leaving you, they will be sure to never forget about you.

This video actually struck me in a way I didn't expect. I've been dealing with my own difficulties for what's felt like a long time right now, and have been trying to improve it through therapy. I never really considered the Persona series in such a way until now, and gotta thank you for putting that message out. I definitely needed it, and I hope that plenty of others could use it too.

I actually found Joker(P5) to be very relatable to me, because I got into Persona when I was starting high school in a new city...and I felt like everyone was spreading rumors about me for various reasons, I was also becoming more rebellious and I started to see the problems that other people were having in this world....and when I saw this curly haired teen with glasses who was in a new city dealing with all these rumors and also dealing with the problems of society while being accompanied by friends who were also rebellious.....I fell in love, I found and rpg series that I loved and a character that I could relate to not just in appearance, but also through the situation he was in. I also found many of the dialogue options relatable, like I could see myself saying these things in this situation. Heck, I love Joker so much that when he was announced for Smash I lost it, I was so happy and I love how he plays.

I played Persona 5 at the perfect time in my life and fell in love with it. It's crazy how the situation you're in can affect the media we consume.
P5 came at the exact moment I needed it and it filled a void in my heart. It has stayed there ever since and even playing the rest of the franchise hasn't captured the same feeling.
The Phantom Thieves really stole my heart!

My first persona was Persona 2 Eternal Punishment. My favorite is Persona 4 because of how it tackles certain social issues with being yourself and discovering who you are without basing yourself on public opinion. Not to mention facing the truth of yourself and some of the parts of yourself you don't want to face. Persona 4 hit hard with me. Especially the character Kanji. His outward appearance was defined by how people saw him but deep down he wanted to be seen as kind and gentle. But he couldn't do that without being perceived as Gay and made fun of. Kanji hits home with me because I was confused sexually as well and it took me a long time to come out as gay partly because of how society treats Gay people sometime. I thought if i came out i'd have to act like a 90's American stereotype. But i learned my sexuality doesn't define who i am. I do and no one else.

Thorgi talking about "THE LOOP" was possibly the most accurate description of a Persona game post Persona 2 ever.
A bit to add to "THE LOOP" is that with roughly half of your social links being your main party members, by the end of the game you've learned so much about your party and have grown with them, those last couple of dungeons don't feel like dungeons but a team of superheroes coming together to stop a world ending event from happening (I'm looking at you Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal).

I agree with you and I love the Persona series too, but idk if you've understood Kanji's character...
His character is not about him being gay or not, it's rather about the theme of japanese gender roles and him being an outcast because of that: he is a boy who likes "girly" things, he is not scared of girls, he is simply scared of rejection, and he has to find out what it means to be manly and finds out it's not about liking/doing stereotypically masculine things but rather about being yourself.

I got started with the series thanks to persona 5, like a lot of people. I got the OG version in late 2017 after tons of people made videos on it, and then decided to get it that holiday. It introduced me to some friends I still talk to heavily to this day, and made me realize who I am, and even gave me my still comfort character. I thank the series so much for everything.
But dear lord is the fandom toxic as hell

My favorite thing about persona is 2 fold:
-first it uses mythology characters as basically Pokemon, which is genius and right up my alley
-second all of the characters have some endearing trait to them and a good storyline, meaning any of them could be your favorite
My personal favorite is Morgana. His dynamic with Joker makes it clear how much they trust each other. Plus what other party member is both the team master planner and the getaway vehicle?

From a gameplay perspective, I really like how status effects are actually useful against enemies. In other JRPGs I've played, there would be no reason to use status effect spells - the enemy would either be immune, or the battle would be over before it made a difference.
One thing that bothered me about the social link system, is that ranking up the social link requires telling the character what he/she wants to hear. A good example is Hidetoshi in P3; Eventually, he realizes that he is kind of an authoritarian jerk, but the only time the protagonist says anything about it is when the player maxes out the social link. Up until then, improving the social link requires the player to answer the dialogue choices like a yes man. The system is linear. It would be kind of cool if there were branching paths such that from time to time, one response would hurt the social link for a bit, but then certain answers afterwards would result in a social link increase greater than if one played it the linear increase way.
I did like how in Persona 4, they allowed the protagonist to max out social links with the female characters without having to date all of them like the Don Juan of the town. It always felt a bit sleazy in Persona 3. However, when P3P came out, I thought it was an excellent idea to not require the female protagonist to do this - a recognition of the reality of differences between men and women.

Great video, but I would push back slightly on Kanji.I think Atlus wanted to imply at least somewhat that his inner demon was his sexuality, but I’d argue the text doesn’t really support that, it more feels like Kanji’s hypothetical gayness is used far more as a punchline than in intentional emotional moments, where usually it’s just about his “manliness” . I think some people taking exception with how Kanji was handled, it’s less because it’s vague and most stories wouldn’t do that, and more it felt like genuinely great gay representation dangled in front of people without Atlus being willing to actually commit and say he’s gay. That said, I still love Kanji as a character, and again this was a banger video.

I still feel like I'm playing final fantasy when a new game comes out and that's the most important thing, but it would be nice for square to be confident enough to go back to the turn base style and to be fair 7 remake is a step in the right direction so hopefully they keep that up. But yeah there seems to be this growing stigma for turn based battle systems and the complaints are often really vague too. My personal favorite is those who think it's just cycling through a menu when there's alot more to it than that. Infact if you go in to an rpg with that mindset, your very likely to get your ass handed to you real quick. Especially for games that use an atb like system where enemies can attack you while your finishing your turn.

  • @basilofgoodwishes4138

Persona is truly amazing. It is like playing a real life with real people and characters, if we ignore some of the poor decisions they made like Ann being forced to go nude.
However it is still realistic and even the most evil people are relatable in some way and even better, all the heroes feel so unique and amazing. I love Joker and his gang precisely because they are so amazingly written and represent what is wrong with our society and how they fix it.
I want now a Persona game where you are on a long summer vacation in which you discover with the help of an ancient historical site the powers of the Persona and get caught in a battle with an evil organization that wants to use the power of the Persona's to rule the world.
This can be a justifications to have a more diverse casts for once and we need same-sex options.
    So who is with me?

I'll argue that persona 5 has its magical switch to solve problems. Namely the change of heart. Each time they are confronted to irl issues they mess with someone heart with their power to fix it. That's my big problem with persona 5 and why I think it's the weaker entry in the series. It's shown even more with the confidents, none of them face their problems, they party just magicaly brainwash the people involved. Think about it, there's little place for all these confidents to grow.
If you compare with persona 4, every characters litterly have to "face thelselves". P3 cast is confronted to death, memento mori.
That's why I don't like P5's logic. It's cool on paper, the teen thieves stealing hearts, but this gameplay mechanic kills any chance for character growth. Royal story did improve on that aspect though.

    • @KaitouKaiju
      @KaitouKaiju Рік тому

The game consistently shows that before anyone gets a change of heart the first step is to build up the victims to fight against their oppressor. The change of heart is just the last push to get the oppressor to admit their crimes as opposed to real life where it's often much messier (eg. killing your rapist)

I want to play 4 but that game touches one of my personal gripes with a story, in that when there's a non human charachter a writer will change them into a human so they can be "Strong" or "normal" and I hate that bullshit so much. One of the reasons why I love Morgana so much is because the writer said no Morgana's fine the way he is and can be special without needing to become human.

  • @zuzu091

Lmao tackling heavy topics my ass. Most themes in persona are all for the show, the game follows the same plot every game. Some unnamed fool becomes the chosen one, gets his persona, his power is powered up by his links and kills god at the end.
The single game that actually had a real villian was Persona 2, the other games just followed the same pattern rescue your friends, god pops out of nowhere and you yeet him. I want more paths in the future games, like how SMT 4 had the "good and bad" themes to it, in witch none of them where actually the best, you got to make your decision.
I feel like Atlus just went to shit after Persona 4, the SMT 3 release was so underwhelming and now SMT 5 looks a lot like Persona but i don't want to give my opinion till a try to game. Persona 5 is my lease favorite in the series in terms of everything outside of how it looks, witch in my opinion it looks stunning.
The game tries to make these "mature themes" in wich none of the characters actually correlate with them in the long run, thus making the characters feel empty at the end of the game. Yusuke had the best one imo, his thing was simple he loved art but he sticked to it and in the end it felt like he achived something. Ann link feel so underwhelming, she hated herself for no damn reason other then for her theme of "oh no i feel ugly even tho i look fucking good what im gonna do" witch felt very narcisistic.
Futaba was just fucking bait for the shy asian gamer girl,Ryuji was straight up dumb, Haru was unexistent and Makoto's link i don't even know what was with it, like she is the stereotypical smart girl who thinks she is supperior but they didn't did nothing to back it up, they could've make it like how Japan society sees smart people as more of like assets in the society or objects at the workplace with their toxic work culture but yea.
The villians where the worst in the series, i felt like they where just super evil for the sake's of the character associating with me, to make them look good and sympathize with them. Like for example the first fella, Kamoshida. He literally beated students and nobody did nothing to him.
Call the cops? nah it would work, call the school? nah they like him too much, like the game forced you to become the bad guy. Joker and Ryuji at the start where so against violance but somehow a girl yeeting herself and smehow become full fledge motivated killers.
And another problem i had with the game was how easy it was, i played it on merciless and steam rolled to the game, i really wished there was more harder content in witch you could use buffs/debufs but the game just felt that it forced you to use only heals and damage, the other stuff maybe outside the reflection spells felt underwhelming.
I just hope for more harder Persona games in the future, better villians with real motives and motivation and more intresting social links, i'm sick of the same company of smart guy, shy guy, tomboy girl, tough guy, etc. or at least to make them look good like how Persona 4 did it, the characters where all stereotypical but the theme of the game made them fit in so good.
