- In this video I share my 2 year Japanese Futon update! I cover how I hang my futon during the day, how I clean it in the sun, and how it has changed my life over the past two years. I also go into minimalism, money, and living a simplistic life. Enjoy!

“People valuing minimalism” I just needed more room for my VR setup
I just need more space to studdy
This is exactly why I want this! 😂 lmao
Same lol
Literally same dude I have my vr setup in my dining room and I keep hitting stuff and hurting my hands but the futon is 100% making this better cuz I can finally do it in my room
Same!
As a Japanese person its kind of nice to come across people experiencing futon. All the best to you
Please tell me, which ones on Amazon are authentic?
@@nikaj111 I am sorry I think my Amazon it is different from yours. If you truly want something from Japan you can sign up for Japanese Amazon, there is English language there. Happy new year to you
I don't understand why someone would say that it shouldn’t be about economic reasons. I started minimalism because I wanted a space that was clear of clutter, but I have stuck to it BECAUSE it's so economical. I'm shocked to understand how many things there are out there we don't need and I'm grateful that my practice saves me money. Honestly it's also one of the reasons why I've been able to convince a few of my friends to try it out!
I feel the same way. I beautiful by product of minimalism is the extra money (freedom) that you save. Enjoy!
A lot of the minimalist movements are classist, in that they cater to a refined, cultivated living experience that STILL revolves around the objects that you buy (spending more money to get higher quality, longer lasting objects, is, regardless, still building identity surrounding the objects you buy i.e. consumerist capitalism) not only that, but the minimalist life style tends to be only accessible to people who have the resources, whether financial or time, to reduce waste and become a minimalist consumer. "Minimalist zero-waste" items are exponentially more expensive than other things that may not last as long. I am not critiquing you or your experience, but for a lot of people who dont have resources available to them can't be minimalist zero-waste. It is not economical.
If anything its easier to move than a full bed frame and mattress. This is why I returned to it.
@@chasewilson7980 minimalism really should be about practical declutter. Buying better quality is smart if you can afford to. But if you can't you have to take care of your stuff regardless else if its badly made it will likely require replacement effectively over time some things bec9me more expensive because they are cheaper or not taken care of. If income is an issue the point of your minimizingy would be to make home life less cluttered and just removing unneeded things like 12 years of newspaper as an obvious example. Otherwise if your home is legitimately functional and you have use for things then why not keep it? I'm getting rid of my mattress because its too heavy to lift alone, my dresser because i never use it and my nightstand because I don't need it either (I use it but it only holds rarely used items for when i go to the shooting range), I repurposed one of my glass desks tops as floor shelfs next to my futon bed to place my things on even though technically it's not necessary.
How many hours you are on the matress every 24h? Think about getting something better for your body.
Place a Japanese tatami mat under it so it can breath.
Where can I find one
A tatami floor also makes it much softer.
Who nice to know. 😃 thanks!
Why is this important? Does it keeps more bacteria without it or something?
Thinking of getting a tatami mat too. Would that help to block some vibrations from the neighbours below especially when they are banging their doors?
I thought to myself that I have no future because of finding a place I can call home.
But after discovering a tiny house, zero waste, veganism and minimalism, I have a clear perspective on life and finding information from people like you, I feel like I can live a normal life. It's really amazing seriously.
Yes!!!
Bless. 🙏🌱
Vegansim = malnutrition.
@@spiritlevelstudios You can call it that but not everyone who's vegan is malnourished.
@@J276 Yes I know. Some of them cheat, like Rawvana, while continuing to push the diet and collect cash.
I went through a divorce and started sleeping on a yoga mat. The benefits to my back and mental health are insane. Also Austin native what up.
Eyyyy, that's awesome!
Oooooooh, I want to hear about how it's benefitting your mental health!
curious to hear what you're sleeping on now
that is hardcore. Even Japanese don't sleep directly on tatami.

there are many levels:
- veganism - whole foods plant based
-barefoot shoes/sandals
-grounding via barefoot or indoor earthing connection
-sleeping on the floor !!!
- minimalism - own less, don't buy into consumerism.
- SLS/flouride free toothpaste natural toothpaste
-^same for shampoo (although i use don't use any at all)
- organic cotton clothing
- pollutant free as possible e.g. PFC free bags, organic produce
- berkey water filter :))
- meditation, mindfulness, reading eckhart tolle etc
- technology free where possible - to reduce EMF exposure (turn laptop phone everything fully off at night
i'm sure there are a few others i have missed out but this is what i do in my life!
Wow idk if it's my phone but when you crow up and down your profile pic gets trippy. It's actually pretty cool . O think it might be that Im on dark mode and your pic is black
@@Spirit_well just move to the country grow and make everything you use or consume. do it all while walking around bare footed and sleep on the porch. trade for other things you need but can't make. sounds easier.
You're right, maybe minimalism can be different for everyone. For me it's not specifically about saving money but making life easier and more simple. In addition I get to really focus on fewer hobbies when I'm not always starting new ones and hoarding all kinds of new stuff. The money saving is a bonus :D
Putting your mattress in the sun is definitely a great way to keep it clean. I once rescued a couple of kittens and for a few weeks I kept them in my bedroom until I found a home for them, they had a litter box that they used, but somehow they ended up spraying all over my mattress, it was really weird because there were no visible signs of cat pee, no stains, just this terrible cat pee smell... I was broke, so I pulled my mattress out into the sun, sprayed the heck outta it with diluted vinegar, after about 3 days in the summer sun, that smell was totally gone, I ended up getting another 3 years outta that mattress until I gave it to a friend.
I got high density foam and cut it in two halves so it’s light enough for me to lift easily .. I made a removable cover for it.. it fits down the wardrobe.. It feels so much cleaner to change the energy from bedroom to living room.. I’m so glad I did this .. I wake up clearer and the routine feels more mindful... I gave my old bed and luxurious mattress away and I’ve not missed it at all... ✌️✌️
yes, an update! i actually threw out my bedframe because of that mentioned video and have since been sleeping on my matress on the floor... no regrets!
Let's Gooooo!!! ❤💜🙏
I bought a futon after watching this video. It sat in the closet for around 6 months due to me living in multiple environments. But now that I’m living in one place I have a space for my futon and I’m loving it especially for my back.
I bought my futon mattress nearly 3 years ago after watching your video. It's been a life changer for me. No more back and neck stiffness and , oddly, I find it much easier getting up from the floor than I did standing up from the side of a divan bed.
It may not be for everyone, but I'm so pleased I got mine. By far one of my two best purchases ever. The other one is my mountain bike.
After I moved, I simplified my life and loved it. Less maintenance, clean up etc. I will try this Japanese egg mattress
Ah what a refreshing temperament in your videos. Thanks! This was lovely to watch. 😊
Glad you enjoyed!
You have inspired me to get a futon! I had been sleeping on one occasionally at my dads house when I would stay over the night and have fell in love with them HAHAH they are just so good on the back! And I love the feeling of being at ground level. Thanks for this video man :)
Nice! Glad you got value out of this video 💜🙏
thought I'd mention.....
you mentioned the moisture coming from down under... this might be worth researching for your health benefit.
You might want to slip something under your mattress..... such as the tatami mat, aluminum foil mattress(camping or picnic waterproof) or and cardboard boxes.
the aluminum foil mattress and the cardboard will help keep the cold air down from shooting up from down under and also the will keep you warm.
You wonder why the homeless people on the street all uses cardboard boxed straight on top of the cement .. this is the very reason why.
Also, if you are a camper, consider putting cardboard boxes on the floor in your tent.
Consider putting sleeping bag over the usual camping cushion on top of the cardboard box.... you will definitely feel the difference the next day.
Also, the cold from down under can cause stroke...... can be subtle and not but if you pay attention, you can perhaps recognize small changes... such as mouth or the jaw line is slightly turned away or not, part of ones body tingles or numb.... etc.
I am just sharing my knowledge.......
Im not a minimalist. I am a person who wants a larger bed, but doesn't want to spend the money on a queen size mattress and bed frame. For me this Japanese bed is simply a solution to a problem. Some may judge me for this but for me i want to make the best of what i have
I really enjoy minimalist videos. I am interested in a Japanese futon.
When I heard your introduction in this video, I thought of "hey guys, Callum here and this is slapped ham" 😂😂😂😂
Thank you so much for this futon review! I am in the process of buying a new bed but want to make sure I buy something it will help my health and the/my environment. This was very helpful. BTW, while I was watching the video I thought you were in sunny Australia Lol 😊
This is so inspiring! Can’t wait to get mine! I’ve just been sleeping on the floor or sofa because I refuse to buy a mattress.
You will love it!
buy a tatami. mat for it if your like me yull love it.

I'm going to give this a shot. I think I'll use a zip up mattress cover for easy cleaning and to keep the futon clean
After you put in the zip-up mattress cover, what did you put on top of it? Was it a Japanese futon bed cover? How did it feel? Did it fit?
Great video ,thanks for sharing .

just bought one on amazon hope I get a job I love by sleeping on a futon
Hahaha that is too funny. You never know! For me it just came down to me working a job that was not my ideal in order to pay the bills and save, and then in my free time I poured all my energy into my skills and passions and now I work full time for another UA-camr. So just make sure you are spending time outside of work on what you really want to do
I would love to get a tatami mattress just as a space saving bed. I live in a VERY small apartment and when my daughter comes to visit, it would be nice to just be able to pull it out and BAM! She has somewhere to sleep! Then roll it up and store it when she leaves. I also want a futon/couch for myself. My dad had a futon and that this was the most comfortable thing to sleep on that I have ever experienced! It really was great!
Yeah!!!! I want a Futon. My concerns are about cleaning and stuff.
Banjaresse in South Kalimantan, Indonesia sleep on the floor too.... They use a bed fill with kapuk randu (Ceiba petandra). The bed also can roll up and make free space.
You are great, thank you for sharing
Is there a difference in temperature between a futon and a bed matress by any chance? I slept on a bed matress once without the frame but started sneezing and got cold. I'm thinking of a buying a futon once I get my own house but don't want to risk being cold unless the futon is warmer than a bed matress on a floor.
thank you for sharing 🌱
You win! Only for the standing desk in my opinion ahahaha, it's just so good for your health💪🔆
And how about heating “blanket" below the futon? I have strong allergy to dust mites, even in summer my mattress is toasty 40C (only when I’m not sleeping !!! ).
Heat dries it and makes in inhospitable for mites or mould. 200kwh per year 20$ (most places, apart of California ;)
The futon in your link has a foam core, does the one you bought have one as well or have them changed it?
How many layers is that? I'm contemplating if I should get an 6 or 8 layer one
Dose it hurt your back? I'm moving to 350sq studio in San Francisco and i just want something that's easy to move when my year lease is up.
I moved into a studio apt with my bf and we’ve been wanting to invest in a futon 😂
Thinking about getting one because my room is tiny so i can just hang it up and have more space in my room.
How do they positively affect your back and health etc?
Lighning fast shipping. Excellent product very pleased
“Minimalism is about whatever you want it to be”. 🎯
How do you keep bugs from getting on your shikibuton when it's airing out in the sun?
"since buying a futon my financial situation has changed completely. I now work a job that I love..."
I like minimalism, but a matress that gives you the ability to quit your boring 9 to 5 job,... really?
At the time I bought it I had very little money as a result of a ton of factors (travel, starting a business, moving, failing, etc.). Minimalism allowed me to save money at a faster pace. Especially not having to buy a bed. And as time has gone on I am on excellent financial footing. So it is not direct but minimalism is conducive to saving.
You tried that
you can also. use a mixture of white vinegar and water 1 part vinegar to 15 parts distilled water is the minimum strength needed but of course you can go stronger.
In regards to what?
This year im moving in with my cousin for uni and I can't have a fix bed because I don't have a room... I'm trying to see if this would be better than a foldable bed :)
Can you recommend some good cheap pillows from amazon that would work with a futon? Thanks 🙏
Thank you for this video, very insightful. I'm living in Japan and will have to move to an unfurnished apartment and this is making me make decisions what I really would want to have in my life and how to save money. I was debating between a mattress and a futon on cost alone but was unsure about how it would feel to sleep on it daily. I have a bad back so I'm hoping it will help in that area of my life as well!!
Yes I love it! Heard it is very good for people with back problems. I don't have back issues but I haven't noticed it hurting my back or anything. Enjoy!
So how was it? Did it work for you?
Love your desk as well so nice
Thank you! 😊
Minimalism to me is not having much to dust, having holiday or rarely used stuff neatly put away in containers BECAUSE I'M LAZY!!!! XD Enough to feel homey but not too much to be cluttered
saaaame
Do you use a bag for carry around the futon?
I always thought my upper back pain was caused by stress. Since I sleep on the floor on a futon, no more pain in my lower back but especially no feeling of stress in my upper back.
I just found this video; Google searched sleeping in the floor. I'm curious how well floor sleeping would be for me, since I have some bad disk in my lower spine.
What's a good japanese futon to buy in uk ?
Minimalism to me is having the storage space for containers of holiday decorations but easy to clean spaces with few decorations the rest of the year with simple japanese decor
I live in Maine. It’s either too cold to put out or too muggy and humid to dry anything. Are there tips for someone like me or is this not a good idea for someone in my climate type? I love minimalism and want to make the jump. Any tips would be great. I subscribed and liked.
I just want a futon to have more space in my college apartment during the day
How is it for those with chronic pain and back pain?
bro i just want something for the bed of my truck. is it comfortable is the real question? will i have back pain?
Would you recommend something underneath the futon? A yoga mat or bamboo mat? I don’t want a tatami mat simply cuz of color
Yeah maybe something similar to a tatami mat that allows the futon to breathe a bit
How would a Japanese futon compare to one of those foam self inflating mats that are used for camping?
I think this would be a lot more comfortable for long term sleeping
Where did get the futon topper?
Just ordered my 100% organic cotton shikibuton from a company on the West Coast! I am curious--do you use a fitted sheet on yours or do you use a flat sheet and fold it underneath?
I use a fitted sheet
What company did you buy your organic shikibuton from? Are you happy with it?
Can one use an UV light to sanitize the mattress
I agree
I got this futon, but less than 3 months later the spots where my hips and shoulders sit have flattened out A LOT!! Is there any way to fix that? Do you experience that issue as well?
Rotate it so your head is on the other side from where you normally sleep on. Probably get some extra cushion like stacking another on top.
Been on mine for a week ( I'm 53), I am never going back to a traditional bed. First time in years I have no pain and the best sleep.
@@stevend.5164 I really do not know which is best? I went inexpensive to try. Will be looking at more traditional and a bit more expensive in the future as i have had the best sleep in year. Also, way less to no pain when I wake.
@@stevend.5164 I believe I bought in through wayfair. Alwyn Home brand
That’s just the western mind set bro minnimulism has been shown through out the past like in China and stuff basically the east im Mexican and we are humble to tbh it’s just a American/British thing

I got it on Amazon. There are a bunch on amazon
Waterproof covers for futons/mattresses keep out all the sweat and skin cells from getting into your futon/mattress. I have been told that fully covering a futon/mattress in a waterproof cover is not good for it, as it makes it really hot to sleep on. I will attest to this, covering the whole futon made it very hot to sleep on, but also... my cat peed on the floor one day while I was moving from one house to another, and it soaked my mattress and I had to get a new one. I think the best solution for me, and also in general for ventilation, is to have a slightly raised platform, the most ideal of which would be a tatami mat, and a waterproof cover for only the top of the bed. Under the waterproof cover I also put a memory foam layer. Sleeping on a futon changed my life. I had such a hard time sleeping before, and was never comfortable. I also struggled with sleep apnea before and felt much better after switching to a futon. Currently I am sleeping on a mattress until my new futon arrives, and even though it is a great mattress, I am not comfortable while sleeping.
Where do you put your desk when you sleep?
I roll it to the other side of my room to a little nook for it
Minimalism oh please. I just want to know if the futon is more comfortable cause I've tried a lot of mattresses but I'm at best 8/10 satisfied
I can't put it out in the sun due to my house not having enough space yard wise so my solution is to get a futon dryer. It has a winter setting and a summer setting the winter setting is for bed bugs and mold but it makes your room hot the summer setting doesn't make your room hot and is only for drying
U do need a step down converter tho
Just want to ask if you remember which converter and dryer you bought
Doesn't using a grass mat underneath help reduce moisture? Do the Japanese fold up their futons daily?
Yes the tatami mat does help. I don't know but I think that many put their bed away each day
$650 desk?!! Lol no thank you 😅 but the futon is cool, I've been looking for a mattress for my spare room too 💜💙 just gotta convince my hubby now
I just need a bed I can roll up so I can dance in my incredibly small room in my apartment and room for my kitten to run around while I’m at work lol but in a sense I’m valuing having less, I had to get rid of a lot of my stuff moving into this apartment because I valued my own space more than a bunch of random stuff
I just wanted to convert my room into a photo lab. But still sleep in it.. don't judge, the Dark in dark room is wonderful
The moisture issue seems like a hszzle, once a month!? Swedish summer is like* two weeks hehe
*not really but you catch my drift
Hilarious that people tell you what minimalism life is about to you... it’s a personal experience..as is this beautiful life ✌️✌️
Haha for sure. Cheers!
I am living alone and currently I have own a 140 cm mattress and I want to buy a Futon, but I can't decide if I want to buy a 160/180 cm for if I ever get a girlfriend. Or I buy a 90 cm or 120 cm for myself alone and when I ever get a girlfriend we buy another 90 or 120 cm futon. What should I do? I like to have some space because I move a lot in my sleep.
Wouldn't an air mattress be more hygienic? What is the difference and benefits between an air mattress and this mattress?
Just out of curiosity, do u still live in Austin? Also have u tried any new futons?
Yes I do. And no not yet!
I love Japanese culture
Wait, so do you just leave it hanging to dry for the entire day or for a short while and then roll it up??
If you leave during the day for work I would hang it up to dry. When you get back you can roll it up and put it away. If you are home you can put it in the sun as well every once in a while.
@@calumx thanks! I just got my futon. It's heavier than I expected 😅
floorgang
All the ones I see online (that are 100 percent cotton and from japan) start from no less than 300 pounds... I've seen cheaper on amazon but not cotton, is yours a genuine cotton futon? 100 dollars seems super cheap!
For a futon you need to sleep on your back? How is the comfort?
I sleep on my back and my sides. It took me 4 days to get used to it and I now find it wonderfully comfortable. It is firmer than a normal bed but still very supportive and enjoyable to sleep on
Raphaël I have the exact same futon he has and I sleep mostly on my stomach and sides. It didn’t take any time for me to get used to it. Loved it the first time I used it.
I spent $1,200 on a futon mattress and one year later it's already sagging. I don't know how to fix it. I can't hang it up often because it's crazy heavy.
Can you at least fold it in half? This way it could partially air out sometimes? When I change the sheets on mine, I fold it in half and turn on a fan. I let it air out for a couple of hours before putting the clean sheets on it. I also fold it in half when I travel so there is air around it. I flip mine in both directions (top to bottom or side to side) pretty regularly too. Good luck with yours.
I also live in Austin. There are so many cockroaches here. How do you keep insects off of you at night?
Haha I did not deal with that at my spot. We had a bug guy come to our house. Sometimes bugs for sure but pretty rare
I live in San Antonio. I still sleep on a mattress with a box spring and bed frame, and I woke up one morning to a cockroach on my head and I got so traumatized I threw up..... We’ve had a bug guy come and spray the house down to keep the roaches away. I’ve heard that spraying eucalyptus essential oil with water around your bed keeps them away cuz they don’t like eucalyptus
I think futons save a lot if space if your home is like a bit small- but the could be uncomfortable alot so yeah-
Everything this guy owns is a gamechanger Lol
Do you use regular bedsheets for this?
Yes
@@calumx appreciate it ✨
you guys do it for minimalism but i do it because my back hurts on regular mattresses
I like the firmness too
is it comfortable for side sleepers?
Yeah I sleep on my back and on my sides also and it works well for me.
Also how do you prevent mold?
rolling every day, and storing next to an open sunny window. also direct sunning once every few weeks
i also live in austin
I would love to get a futon in the future, but a box beneath is a must for me
Just had to say you are the only other person from the US named Callum I've ever seen!
Mine is spelled Calum. But yes it is a rare name here!
I just want more space in my room ngl 😭
Do you really have to sun it out everyday you can't get away with fortnightly even weekly?
Yeah for sure. I don't sun everyday. Just as often as you can and as makes sense.
a high intensity uv light should also work.
What brand is this futon?
It is an old Amazon one
