  • Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make a knife lanyard knot. Easy step by step instructions for tying a knife lanyard knot in this simple guide.
The diamond knot is an ornamental knot. It is knot #787 in the Ashley Book of Knots (AboK). It is also known as the sailor’s knife lanyard knot, the marlin spike lanyard knot, the bosun’s whistle knot and the friendship knot.
The knot is tied by joining two ends of a single cord with a carrick bend to form a loop in the middle. The ends are then wrapped around the outside of the loop and up through the center of the knot.
    Use/Application
It is often used as an ornamental part of a knife or tool lanyard. It can also be used to make paracord jewelery, as a decorative part of a paracord survival bracelet or key fob or zipper pull. It is often used as a paracord bracelet end knot. If you pull the slack out and completely close the loop you can form a button knot (the chinese button knot), which can be used as a functional button. Sailors used to tie the knot with a large loop and use the loop as a necklace with the knot as an attractive pendant.

Hey thanks for this video! I got some paracord for my son’s school project. Needed to learn a quick single strand knot with a loop for a handle and this is exactly what I needed. It’s a good clean and strong knot that won’t come undone! Thanks! A video as good as this will last for many more years to come 👍

I tried to tie this on a thin stranded wire to get a bit sturdier thin loop. It did not come out quite as nice and regular but it seems solid enough. Some of the loops went to the bottom so had to turn the knot like halfway inside out. I wonder how short can you cut the loose ends for it to remain reliable.

Why oh why with all these lanyard knot videos no one ties it on a knife, which is it's purpose? Do you all tie these off the knife and then do a lark's head with a bite over the eye? I don't just need to know the knot, I need to know the application!
My guess is that the eye of the knife replaces the middle finger?

Great tutorial! But an overrated knot. 1. Difficult to do. 2 Hard to untie. 3 strands become uneven and the strain on the rope depends on one strand instead of two. 4. It takes a long time to do so you are not helped in a stressful situation. 5 Hard to remember. 6. Rarely turns out great. 7 Easy to make a mistake and get it wrong. Anyway, thx for the upload. I will put this in my "tucker bag".
