Another great video. Beautiful country. I just summited Mt. Mitchell in North Carolina. It's not as high as Guadalupe Peak (which we did in April) but it was tough. I like trekking in the West because there are fewer trees and you can see the surrounding countryside. In the Appalachians there so many trees you can't see anything.
That's awesome. Mt. Mitchell is on my list. And I totally know what you mean. I also love the big views of the west. Near constant views. Whereas in the east, you only have views when there is a break in the trees. We totally agree on that.
Great video! I've been three times and finally ventured away from GP trail on my last trip but only went up McKittrick Canyon to The Grotto. I'm headed back out in April and pan to hike Devil's Hall. I definitely want to hike up Bear Canyon and "think" I might be up to the task after my recent weekend trip to Zion. Totally agree with you about 285. It was fine in the early morning in '15 and '16 but this past November was a shocker. Never again. Thanks for your videos and hope to cross paths with you someday.
I've driven 285 when it really wasn't bad also. But when it's bad, it's terrible. I've driven through southern NM and come down from Carlsbad my last couple trips and I think that's the quickest way for me to go. Going up 54 from Van Horn is the most scenic though. Bear Canyon isn't THAT hard. I definitely think going up McKittrick Canyon, which I hadn't yet done on when I made this video, was harder. Great thing about Bear Canyon is you can see the top the whole way up. Glad to hear from someone who has taken multiple trips at GUMO and has plans for more. That's awesome. You've got plenty more park to explore! I'm starting to plan my next trip out there. Hope to be out in late summer or early fall. Have a great time in April. Devils Hall was awesome. Especially if you can be there without a crowd. Thanks for watching.
The shorts were foolish. But it was a good learning experience. I think I'm going to take 2022 off from the park. I've really been enjoying your videos though. Keep it up. I especially like that you're doing anything but the typical hikes.
@@CameronHall88 yeah I’m just out their to finish that last bit of trail and the remaining 8k foot peaks. Then I move to big bend! My main goal is to finish all the 8k peaks then 7k peaks of Texas. I’ll be spending all the time I can in the Davis mountains too!
The day I saw you there we headed up (or just did it the day before) bear canyon, man was it steep but also fun. Great video sir!! Totally agree about the bowl. It was my favorite part of the park we saw for sure!
Kevin Ryan thanks for watching. And thanks for coming and finding me last time. I don't always drink beer at 8am. But I just happened to be done with my trip.
I said I wouldn't go up bear canyon but after New Year's going up from McKittrick Canyon to McKittrick Ridge I'll go ahead and do Bear Canyon next trip. Great trip so far Cameron. I'll be watching for part 2
Bluecollar Backcountry thanks for watching. Next trip will be McKittrick Canyon and Wilderness Ridge as well as the Salt Basin Overlook Trail. Probably wait until fall color or even winter. I love spending time out there. Wish I was a lot closer.
R Doody thanks for the kind words. I like to think some people get good info out of them. Sounds like you'll have a great trip. I hardly ever see anyone I'm the backcountry. Enjoy your hike.
BlessingOfAdventure it was tough in the moment. Doesn't seem as bad now. You'll be doing climbs a lot more impressive soon! Katahdin is a beast for sure.
another great GUMO trip! have you done the manzanita ridge "trail"? (there is no trail lol) watch out for that Spanish dagger bushwhacking out there! They will go right through your shoes no problem. those small ones can hide under brush and next thing you know you have a blood soaked sock. so DFW area? where can I go within say 4 hours? I was thinking of the good water loop in Georgetown. anywhere else you can recommend for an overnighter?
Tim Eubanks I haven't done Manzanita Ridge. One day, I'm sure. I don't know what I walked through off trail but my legs were shredded pretty good. And I had to pull several thorns out. Near me I usually go backpacking at Dinosaur Valley State Park. It's only 45 minutes away. But there is also the Cross Timbers Trail on Lake Texoma and Mineral Wells State Park/Trailway. There are others but those are the ones I've done. Mostly backpack at Dinosaur Valley or Guadalupe Mountains. I may do the Goodwater Loop before the end of the year.
Hi Cameron, great video again. Yeah, I tried 285 a couple times and won't go that way again. Also, that's what I thought - there was a sign there (or they put it back recently). That cabin is neat too - I didn't know it was there. Mt. Pratt felt very lonely to me. Did you get that feeling? Look forward to the next one.
Zachary Teich the sign was probably there. I may have missed it for the tree. Oh well. Mt Pratt did feel way out there. The thorny scrub and small plants tore my legs up pretty good. It was one of the harder hikes I've done out there. Wish there would have been better views. But it was cool to be able to see the northern part of the park and the southern part at the same time. I'm not used to off trail like you are. At least now I know what to expect a little better next time.
Some of those northern off trail peaks might be easier, which I haven't gotten to yet, but Mt. Pratt (and Frijole) are the easiest off trail peaks. Next is probably El Capitan, then Bartlett, then Shumard. Yeah, I sometimes pull a thorn out of my leg about a week or two later.
FlyCheeseFry and I've driven it several times in the past year or so thinking it won't be bad this time. It gets worse every time. 54 to Van Horn is so great in comparison.
FlyCheeseFry and if you drive it in the dark you get to try to dodge 500 rabbits running out in front of you. It was actually so dusty when I left this last time, I could barely see the mountains from the highway. Crazy.
Sometimes I conceal carry in the front pack. Sometimes I just use it for easy access to other things. I almost never take it backpacking. Only dayhiking. I change what I'm carrying in there buy typically it'll also include a knife, maybe a map and compass, phone, snack, etc.
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Keep doing what you do. Makes me want to visit Texas.
ArcaneOutdoors73 thanks for the kind words. I really enjoy making the videos. (And the hiking isn't too bad either!)

Those mountains are pretty darn beautiful!
The Last Grownup in the Woods love them! One of my favorite places.

Couldn’t imagine doing that with shorts. Badass! In the summer too… you’re crazy man!

Did Guadalupe peak April 1, plan on returning in a few weeks to do Pine Top and Dog Canyon. Your videos are encouraging. Keep up the good work.

You hiked UP Bear Canyon? You're CRAZY! You're a BEAST!
BlessingOfAdventure it was tough in the moment. Doesn't seem as bad now. You'll be doing climbs a lot more impressive soon! Katahdin is a beast for sure.
Ok it's official ...I need to visit this place!! Great vid! I subscribed!!! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻🇦🇺😊
Its my favorite place. Thanks for watching and the kind words.

No kidding, 285 is miserable. Great hikes!

Yeah, that's a good one. You get to see the Sierra Diablos the whole way, too.
FlyCheeseFry and if you drive it in the dark you get to try to dodge 500 rabbits running out in front of you. It was actually so dusty when I left this last time, I could barely see the mountains from the highway. Crazy.
Is the Permian reef trail on your to do list?
bbquman for sure! I'll do it and finish up all the trails at GUMO this fall or winter. Can't wait. Saved some of the best for last.
Do you carry in front pack?
