    This is a beautiful place and has definitely made it to my bucket list.
    More water than I would have expected.

      There isn't much water out there. But Mckittrick has a little bit. Which seems like a lot compared to the surrounding mountains. I love it out there. Harsh, yet beautiful. Thanks a lot for watching.

    Much respect for wearing minimalist shoes hiking in Texas. I did Davis mountains state park in Zero shoes and it killed my feet. I’m convinced they shipped in rocks to make the trails in Texas state and national parks.

      @CameronHall88  3 роки тому

      I used to wear Vibram 5 Fingers exclusively back when they first came out. I doubt I could stand wearing those anymore. But the Trail Gloves are a good mix of minimalist but with enough protection most of the time. It's the dang softball size rocks that hit right in the middle of the foot that kill me!
      Davis Mountains is pretty rocky for sure. I can see how your feet would be worn out!

    Great video! Beautiful!
    Your first night is exactly where we are thinking about setting up camp!
    We were talking about bringing a rake head to clear out cow poop. 😆
    Sausage over the fire is a great idea!
    We yanked a dead bird out of the big tire waterer a couple of months ago.
    Thanks for taking us on a side trip to Devil's Den Spring. It's on our list, but it has always been too late and cold to add it on to our day hike. It has been super dry this year. We might have to plan to visit the spring after a good rain. I bet our girls would really enjoy it.
    If anyone was up on Wilderness Ridge looking down at a guy in a blue shirt it would be us. 😂 Didn't happen though. 😆
    So glad that the Lincoln National Forest redeemed itself!

    • @CameronHall88
      @CameronHall88  3 роки тому

      Thanks a lot for watching, Lindsey. Lincoln NF definitely redeemed itself! The cow poop is terrible in places. And most of them are the places you'd also want to set your tent up. Also saw a lot of bear poop on this trip. Way more than I imagined we would.
      Devils Den was a very pleasant surprise. I was really happy we did that. I bet the spring is gorgeous after some good rains. I'd love to go back and hike down Devils Den Canyon as well.

      Thanks for watching. Permian Reef isn't easy. That's for sure. But the climb seemed to go by quickly on this trip. I had some good rain on Mckittrick Ridge once but never down in the canyon. That would be special.

    I always love when you show Camp Wilderness Ridge in your videos. That's a place I have to hit up for sure. Those canyons were pretty awesome with the big walls. I think this was one of your best videos, the trip was really compelling, and you really captured the area well.
    If you're trying to get out of GUMO a little more on the NM side of the Guads, I recently did a pretty cool trip in CAVE and Lincoln NF where I looped from Yucca Canyon Trail up to GRT and down Slaughter Canyon Trail. It's pretty solid as a 3-day trip. The only downside is a ~3 mile road-walk to start the trip that can obviously be avoided if you go with a friend. If you decide to do it, DM me, because there are some sights off the beaten path that are worth seeing.

    • @CameronHall88
      @CameronHall88  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks man. I just subbed to your channel and saw your video. I'll check it out this weekend. I actually had that exact route drawn up for ChucoHiker and I to do back in October if GUMO didn't open the backcountry. They did so just prior to our trip and we ended up doing the big loop at GUMO. But I still want to do the CAVE loop. It looks like a great route.

    Hi Cameron, good job on the video. I think I can see your route looking at the map. That water must be there all the time if fish are living in it. We talked about the signs at the entrances to some of the canyons. Was there one of those at the entrance to the canyon you came out of, close to the Pratt cabin?

    • @CameronHall88
      @CameronHall88  3 роки тому

      No. Not that I know of anyway, we cut out before it actually runs into the main canyon. I did quite a bit of research on the route. And although almost all side canyons have some restriction from the park, the one we chose, does not. At least not mentioned in any of their official documents.

    loving the Desert Hiking! i thought it was kinda funny you talk about the masks while outside with No One for miles... im pro mask, and will put one on if the trail is narrow and full of people but once ive got 6 ft /it's off// still nice of you to note that you are following the rules, we only get out of this garbage if we all do our part. thank God it is almost over.//comedy about Chuco blending in - i try to wear Bright colors when desert hiking/// got to make sure SAR can find me when i die out there hahaha// so nice in the short forest up there on the ridge. awesome you can be out in the desert but also have the forest and some water in the creeks in this area. that narrow canyon you hike out thru, Wow! ...always a great time in these mtns with you thanks for taking us along. did you figure out if it was a fox or small coyote? sometimes they can be very small.

    • @CameronHall88
      @CameronHall88  3 роки тому +1

      I am almost certain it was a gray fox and have since read a report of someone else seeing a fox in Mckittrick.
      I like to wear brighter shirts if I can but it's not really for practical use. It's just so I can stand out more in youtube videos and pictures.
      This route turned out great. And I haven't seen anywhere where anyone has done this loop and have only seen a couple reports of people traveling the creekbed as its not a talked about route. I'd love to do it again and spend more time exploring.
      Thanks a lot for watching. Your desert travels are always inspiring.

    Great video! I want to make a loop with the McKittrick Canyon trail, heading north on the Dog Canyon ridge just west of the McKittrick backcountry site, heading into NM and then connecting with the trail on wilderness ridge. Would any of that water be in that vicinity? Hoping to supplement what Ill be carrying if possible. Cheers!

    • @CameronHall88
      @CameronHall88  2 роки тому +1

      Sounds like a great route. You won't pass the water in this canyon. Except for down in Mckittrick before you make your way up the ridge to Mckittrick Ridge campsite. Other than that, you'll pass a cattle trough before you enter back into TX on Wilderness Ridge. I'd think that's pretty reliable. If it didn't work out, there is another cattle trough near the parking lot at the end of 540, which is a little ways off your route.
      There is an Awesome meadow on the north end of the Dog Canyon Ridge. Would make a GREAT campsite. It's dry though. When I do another similar route, I'll definitely be camping there.
      Good luck on your route. Sounds awesome.

    • @GregFeeneyPoker
      @GregFeeneyPoker 2 роки тому

      @@CameronHall88 Ok thanks! I've considered just driving to that parking lot and caching some water but will depend on how much time I have available. Thanks for the response! Maybe some time we should do a Collab somewhere in West Texas.

      @Greg Feeney yeah man, that'd be cool. I was going to take a year off from Guadalupe Mountains but I'll probably be back out there end of summer/start of fall. I'm kicking around redoing the Guadalupe Ridge Trail or doing a linger but similar trip to the one in this video.
      We'll also have another UA-cam meetup in TX later in the fall. We are targeting Lost Maples. If either of those sounds interesting, I'll keep you updated.

      @CameronHall88  3 роки тому

      Hey Kelly, I really appreciate you watching. I don't record my routes but I do preplan my routes on apps like Alltrails and Gaia. I keep them private. I honestly don't do it to be a jerk. I enjoy the researching and pre-planning process of a route and find that it makes actually completing the route even more enjoyable. I try to give a lot of info in my videos and then leave it open to anyone who wants to know more to be able to study maps and research online about an area and come up with their own routes.

      Thanks. We definitely filtered from the stream. Plenty of flowing water in the National Forest. That's the reason this trip was so great. We are used to having to haul all our water around the Guads. It was nice to be able to have an actual, reliable water source.

      That sounds exactly right. We don't have pines where I live so I dont deal with it much. What's weird is I know we used mostly pine the second night also and no soot.
