    I use Dominant Pro strings. I also use Leatherwood Bespoke Crisp rosin with them. I perform in small county towns in Australia and am no longer working as a professional. The combination of the Dominant Pro and Crisp rosin provides a massive improvement in tone and dynamic range that my audiences have noticed. I tend to use a very light french bow with this setup which might help avoid the issues you found.

    Good review, from what you say these aren’t strings for me but still nice info to have. I’m curious, do you have any string recommendations for your average orchestra/ensemble player?

    • @erictheviolinist
      @erictheviolinist  2 роки тому +1

      For the average ensemble player, dominants are alright. I highly recommend the TI strings from Thomastik Infeld which are a part of their luthier series. If you can get your hands on those, then I would recommend those. They're in the $60 range for a full set and they feel very nice under the finger. I was thinking about making a video about them sooner than later. Thanks for always contributing to the conversation!

    I tried them. if you know what to do and how to do it, these are the right strings.
    in fact, they are precise, clear, powerful, but with excellent dynamics. Perhaps they are not suitable for already bright instruments, unless you want to emphasize this feature.

    Look at Nicola Benedettis chin and shoulder rest set up, its the best Ive ever seen. Personally, I use an everest with stuffed socks to make it more comfortable.but currently its off both my instruments, Im playing bareback, and i love it, I can hold it up to my ear like Ostack and play sideways.

    Orchestral with the right strings. I think I have found my go to strings, that being Evas. I always was instructed to have silverwound gut G, then silver D with gut core, then raw gut A and finally plain steel wondertone E. That was as best I remember my 4th grade violin teacher recomending. I still love gut, but its got to be the correct diameter and smooth. I KNOW YOU CAN SAND GUT STRINGS BUT I DONT WANT TO BOTHER. WHEN YOU SPEND AN ENTIRE FORTUNE ON STRINGS YOU EXPECT THEM TO BE POLISHED AND GRADUATED TO GIVE PERFECT 5THS. AT LEAST I DO, I CANT SPEAK FOR EVERYONE. I. AM ON DAY 6 OR 7 WITH MY EVAS, AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY, YES , YES THESE ARE MY STRINGS WELCOME HOME EVA. MY GRANDMOTHERS NAME WAS AVA. MY AUNT VIOLET GAVE MY GREAT GRANDFATHER THE VIOLIN I PLAYED ON IN 4TH GRADE THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL.I DIDNT TOUCH IT AFTER 5TH GRADE. IT HAD GLUE CRACKS MY THEN TEACHER SAID. SO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL I UNPLATED IT TO REGLUE IT, AND I RUINED IT.110 YEARS OF FAMILY HEIRLOOM UP IN SMOKE!
    MY ADVICE IS SIMPLE, IF THE TOP OR BACK PLATE DEVELOPES A GLUE CRACK ONLY TAKE A NEEDLE AND RABBIT GLUE AND MAYBE JUST A SHEET OF PAPER AND WORK THE GLUE INTO THE CRACK. THEN USE VIOLIN CLAMPS AND CLOSE THE WOUND GENTLY AND LET DRY OVER NIGHT. THEN IN THE MORNING GENLY REMOVE CLAMPS AND SEE IF CRACK IS SEALED TIGHT.IF YOU REMOVE THE ENTIRE BACK OR BELLY YOU BETTER HAVE A WOODEN FORM TO KEEP THE NECK STRAIGHT AN THINGS IN CORRECT ALLIGNMENT. OTHERWISE TAKE IT TO A LUTHIER WHO HAS THE CORRECT JIG TO HOLD YOUR VIOLIN TOGETHER. WHY DID I GIVE UP THE VIOLIN IN 5TH GRADE? A NUMBER OF REASONS. I STRUGGLED TO READ MUSIC, I WAS ALLERGIC TO ROSIN, I FELT TO MUCH PRESSURE TO READ MUSIC, BUT HAD NOT THE BACKROUND. I FELT OTHERS IN MY CLASS PASS ME BY AND ALL I COULD PLAY WAS ALLEGRO OR PERPETUAL MOTION. ALL I COULD DO WAS FAKE IT AT THE SPRING CONCERT, I WAS THIRD ROW MIDDLE RT. AND I JUST PRETENDED AND LIP SINKED SO TO SPEAK MY REPERTOIRE. AT LEAST I LOOKED SHARP IN MY BLAZER. THAT WAS I BELIEVE THE ONLY VENUE I EVER PLAYED IN, THE OLD GRANTS PASS HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM QUANSIT HUT. AND YOU KNOW? IM GLAD I HAD THAT EXPERIENCE, THAT WAS AN HONEST TO GOODNESS ORCHESTRA. I CAN REMEMBER GIRLS THERE WITH HAIRSRAY CANS BY THERE VIOLIN CASES AND THE AMBER LIGHTING BECAUSE OF THE WOODEN BASKETBALL COURT. I WISH I COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN,BUT WITH MY CURRENT VIOLIN AND EVA PIRAZZIS AND SOME GUILLAUME ROSIN, I THINK I WOULD HAVE LOVED IT! I DIDNT EVEN KNOW HOW TO TUNE TO A PERFECT 5TH. I GUESS SOMEONE TUNED IT FOR ME I DONT REMEMBER. WELL THAT WAS IT, SPRING CONCERT 1971 OR 1972, SOMEWHERE IN THERE. THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS IF YOU LOVE THE VIOLIN, COME BACK TO IT EVEN IF YOU CANT READ MUSIC! YOU CAN PLAY IT BY EAR. JUST LIKE LIFE.C.E. USA

    Did you have someone listening to you or playing your violin for you to determine if you were indeed 'sticking out' from the ensemble with your Dominant Pro string setup? I feel your claim that they are not for orchestral musicians is difficult to make based on your sole experiences.

    I didn't like A E on my violin but love G D.
    I am only a low intermediate level . I like bright sound . I put a steel Helicore for A and Wondertone Gold for E. Do you have reviews on chin and shoulder rests?

      Try your friends shoulder rest,borrow a buddy's shoulder rest, make one from foam experiment. Rubber band a sponge try as many as you dare, the main thing is that it is comfortable and that it is secure and that it prevents the violin from falling. Otherwise your better off without one because they do DAMP the sound. I WOULD RECOMEND A CHAMOIS CLOTH AND PUT IT UNDER YOU CHIN TO ABSORB OILS FROM YOUR CHIN GETTING ON THE TOP PLATE.THEN DRAPE IT DOWNUNDER ONTO YOUR CLLAR BONE. WATCH IT DOESNT SQUIRT OUT LIKE A WATERMELLON SEED!

    Dont get all hung up on chin and shoulder rests.Jasha Heifitz did not use either. All a chin rest does is damps the top and back plates. What if they squish you next to each other standing in orchestra, your shoulder rest will not allow you to put the violin on its side and bow tip straight in the air. You have more freedom for adjustment without a shoulder rest. However the vast concensus is that if you want to vibrato, you need to have that support for the violin so you dont death grip the neck with your left hand. Your chin and shoulder can support the instrument while your left hand flys and oscillates your vibrato.Remember though, vibrato is an ornament, not a destiney. Dont overuse vibrato, at least that is the way I was taught. Today, however, the modern click is to use gobs of vibrato. I try to use restraint as I was taught. If i want to use vibrato, I better darn sure use it correctly to make the passage warmer or cold and chilling or Ravels Zigane, which I have no Idea how to play! But if I listen carefully, I might just mimmick it for good measure! Coda thanks for listening, goodnight!

    Thank you very much for your extensive test of Dominant Pros. You have saved me some money. That isnt necessarily that I don care for the Dominant Pros, because they may In fact sound better on your instrument than mine. I think you tryed to tackle a pretty sophisticated piece of music there, and I commend you for that, however you played too fast for my taste. You dont have to rush this type of music, although I do admire your quick hand, I feel you slurred some of the notes I would have liked to hear each note concisely rather than a spider rambling up the fretboard. STILL I AM NOT AS FLUENT ON THE FRETBOAD AS YOU. I BELIEVED THE LAST HALF OF THE FUGE, JUST NOT THE BEGINNING TO MIDDLE. I AM CURRENTLY PLAYING OVER THE RIVER AND OLD MCDONALD HOWVER, I AM BLOWN AWAY THAT SUCH SIMPLE SONGShb CAN SOUND ORCHESTRAL

    they are not as bright as original Dominant... the Thomastik chart shows them as darker. They do have more focus and power. I think they are great... a worthy successor to Dominant

    • @erictheviolinist
      @erictheviolinist  2 роки тому

      Definitely much better than the Dominants, in my opinion. I think the strings can be slightly cheaper, for a full set. Thomastik spent a little too much on the packaging and could have really excelled even more with the strings.

      I just got them put on with a Pirazzi Gold E and overall love this set up except .. I notice I keep hitting the G string when I didn't before. It is thicker ... any recommendations there? Is a regular Dominant G not as thick? I'm still a beginner/intermediate so don't have the experience. Thank you!

    • @laudemgloriae3
      @laudemgloriae3 2 роки тому

      Okay I got my question answered today. A Luthier measured the thickness of the Pro vs regular Dominant and they are the same. My problem was that I had a bridge change with my string change and it needed to be shaved down a bit more. I actually didn’t realize the bridge had been changed! But anyway got it shaved down and it’s so much easier to play now! I’m good with my Dominant Pros now and the gold E 👍🏻

      @andrewholland9097 2 роки тому

      Silver-wound D strings are often about as thin or thinner than aluminum-wound As, since silver is quite a bit more dense than aluminum. If you want a thicker D string, there is a Dominant Pro aluminum-wound D.

    • @Chenyu_Huang
      @Chenyu_Huang 2 роки тому

      @@erictheviolinist I love Rondo! It doesn’t color up my violin much, kind like a Dominant on steroid, with more power and nuance. Settle in time is also quick, they get stable in just 1 day or 2, and they last for a long time. To be fair to Dominant Pro, I only had it on for 2 weeks before I lost patience with them and took them off, you also mentioned they had a long break in time, maybe I’ll give them a try again some time.
