    My 1925 Italian violin has been transformed by the Dynamo strings! Wonderful projection and over tones with amazing playability. I had switched from the Peter Infeld….don’t think I’ll be going back, as good as those were on my violin. Guess we’re all wondering about the longevity. Fun times while we find out! 3:35pm Apr 20

    I also want to point out that low humidity is not good for violins. Given the space and the conditions of that day, it was optimal to test out the strings

    Great review. I was surprised how warm they sounded on your fiddle since your instrument has such a beautiful, focused, bright timbre, I thought maybe they'd be too much. Yes, hearing them in a real-world setting gave a fuller picture of how they'd sound under "battle conditions." I've grown accustomed to the low tension of the D-Pros and love how they feel under my fingers, but if these have a similar feel, I'd try them. I'd be curious to know how they age over time, whether it's a horrible death like Evahs or a gradual one with an increase of surface noise but still responsive like the D-Pros. I will say that the price point is a bit of a deterrent for me. Great playing in the excerpts, by the way! 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

    • @erictheviolinist
      @erictheviolinist  Рік тому +2

      Thanks man! The Evahs do die a horrible death quickly, I admit. I would say the D-Pros and the Dynamos have exactly the same feeling under the fingers.

    I've had a set of Dynamos on for a week now and have been loving them. I put them on 3 hours before an orchestra rehearsal (risky), played them in for half an hour, and they stayed stable (pitch) through the whole 3-hour, outdoor service. Over the next day they very quickly lost that new string metallic brightness and now I'm getting a warm but focused sound. Tomorrow I'll play them for the first time with the quartet, so will be a nice test of blend vs solo power.

    Had to go back and compare from your Dominant Pro video and have to say I like these better. At least from what the mic can pick up, it's probably even more different in person. To me they seem like they do have a good depth and are very smooth. I'm very curious now to know what they actually feel like but after you said the price I went nooo haha. For someone of your level though I think these will be very suitable. So for what was said about wanting to recreate that old world sound did he mean like gut strings with more vintage violins? They do have a different sound but I've only ever used gut strings on a vielle so can't really say it's something I've thought about in terms of modern instruments. Anyhoo, I've gone on too long haha I look forward to hearing your thoughts after a couple months!
    Also I like your expression change at 12:50, even if I'm not entirely sure if it's in response to the strings or the music.

I had a gift certificate so I figured why not try them. I just don’t want to fall in love with a string and then find out I have to replace it more than once or twice a year given the cost. My current strings can last around 6 months before a change.

I only had to adjust them twice and by 7 they were holding strong.

    This sounds great. But Dominant Pro were hard to play on my main violin, compared to the original Dominants, because of the higher tension. These Dynamo are the same tension as the Pro, so unfortunately, they probably aren't going to work out for it.

  • @denysmcnair302
    @denysmcnair302 9 місяців тому +1

    It's really difficult to make a judgement of the Dynamo strings as there are so many variables in addition to the strings. ie the violin, the position of sound post and bridge, the bow and rosin, and variable humidity.
    I used Evah Pirrazi strings for a while but they noticeably deteriorated within 3 months of daily playing. Since then I've always played Thomastik Titanium Vision Solo strings, as they suit my violin, and retain sound quality for at least 3 months. They are also affordable.
    I shall try the Dynamo's in the future but paying an extra £40+ on top of what I usually pay is a painful prospect.
    Your demonstration of the strings was pleasing, but I was left a little underwhelmed by the sound of the G sting, which lacked the deep colourful resonance that I had expected, especially when playing the Bach Allamande and the Preludio. I was disappointed that the different voices in these pieces lacked distinct dynamic contrast.
    Unfortunately your demo didn't convince me to rush to order a set of the strings.

    • @erictheviolinist
      @erictheviolinist  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comment! Yes, I agree. There are many variables to choosing the right string and sometimes getting a luthier’s opinion is the great option. And yes, they are the most expensive strings I’ve ever put on my violin to date. It can be painful on the budget if you certainly don’t play as often.

  • @Creationhorse

    Honest opinion, criminally expensive compared to other synthetics, including their own. Other competitors have already explored great depth of tone and a voluminous sound with lower tension-not going to mention them here out of respect to Thomastik and yourself, but they were made two years ago at most. A lower priced variant of an already existing line.
    I would give them away if someone gave me a free set to try-that is how I feel about their aggressive pricing for the "best" string in the market. It makes everyone make their strings pricier (not talking about inflation, of course everything is more expensive nowadays.) Infeld Pis are expensive-they should have kept that high price as the absolute top for synthetics. Some won't care, and I do not mind that-but I won't support this product.
    (Have used Thomastik/Infeld strings, no personal grudges involved.)

    • @classicalthrasher

      @@erictheviolinist Many thanks for not taking my comment personally. 👍
      Thomastik makes good strings-the pricing has been an issue with them since I was a young violinist. I thought Infeld Pi were expensive when they were introduced! But I definitely enjoyed many of their sets decades ago, before Pi started the trend towards very and even more expensive strings (back then, Evah Pirazzis were "pricey"-now they are kind of "regular price".)
      Best wishes.

    I felt the room acoystics too live. Innitially I was reminded of the great violin mystery pbs 1982. Your playing is very nice but I felt a distance from the microphone. Im not sure about the Dynamos. They dont seem to project. Wheres the volume? The umpf! They dont have any reserve power. Your technique was wonderful and playing very graceful. BUT NO POWER! I FELT LIKE YOU WERE BEING EATEN UP BY ROOM ACOUSTICS LIKE THERE WAS A VEIL FILTERING OR DAMPING YOUR TONE. SORRY SO HARSH ON YOU! MAYBE THE CARPET ATE UP YOUR OVERTONES THERE WAS DAMPING GOING ON SOMEWHERE NOT SURE OF SOURCE. MAYBE YOUR INSTRUMENT NOT PLAYED IN ENOUGH OR BAD BRIDGE EATING UP OVERTONES. IVE HEARD IT SAID IT TAKES 50 YEARS FOR A VIOLIN TO BREAK IN. MAYBE YOUR VIOLIN NEEDS TO BE EXPOSED TO A PIANO TOP FOR A WHILE. I DONT THINK THE DYNAMOS GOT A FAIR PRESENTATION. I DONT THINK I WOULD RUN OUT AND BY ASET IMMEDIATELY I THINK THEY ARE TOO NEW. MAYBE SOUNDPOST RESET. IFEEL YOU ARE CONSUMATE VIOLINIST SOMETHING IS KILLING YOUR SOUND AND ITS NOT YOUR FAULT.
