      Hear! Hear! I've been driving turbo 4's since the 1980's (Saabs) when turbos were rare. I owned a Mazda 626 with "TURBO" in foot high letters on the side. (I think that's why I collected several tickets in that car.) And I'm currently driving my second GTI. I love 'em. But turbocharging is neither necessary nor ideal in every vehicle, especially a two ton crossover designed primarily for maneuvering in the jungle of suburban traffic and for long freeway slogs. A naturally aspirated V6 (such as the one in my KIA Sorento) is delivers quieter, smoother, more linear power and will outlast a comparable turbocharged engine.
      Not every vehicle needs to be designed for stoplight runs for pink slips, despite the adolescent fantasies of youtube fanboys.

    A turbo would just suck down more gas. Not to mention the 3.3T wants premium instead of regular. I think Kia/Hyundia did good to put in the revised 3.8L

    • @michaels7984
      @michaels7984 3 роки тому

      Adding it as an option is a good thing, dont have to get it if you don't want. A turbo would help a lot. If you are someone that drives on a lot of one lane roads, passing power is important.
      This is also a heavy vehicle. If its loaded up with people, gear and maybe pulling a camper or trailer, the extra power would really help.

    • @455LT1
      @455LT1 3 роки тому

      @@michaels7984 it's a FWD drive vehicle. They're aren't any turbo V6 turbo 3 rows on the market for a reason. The torque output wouldnt work well, and would result in sloppy torque steer. The Edge ST is the only one I can think of (but it's a 2 row) and it's not refined when you stomp on the gas.
      The Telluride is not meant to be a hot rod. If more output is needed, there are more powerful RWD based SUVs that can properly route additional torque. If anything, passing power is not the problem with the Telluride, it's low end grunt. It has plenty of output in the upper RPM range.

    • @michaels7984
      @michaels7984 3 роки тому

      @@455LT1 they would absolutely need a different transmission for the 3.3 as it was designed for a rwd, but it is something they said they would consider in an interview if the demand was high enough.
      Regardless, even if they went with a new turbo v6, it could still be done. Would probably have to be awd and be tuned differently than something like the Stinger, but it is feasible. There are a lot of other 3 rows with a lot more power than the telluride, having a ton more torque doesn't automatically mean it's going to drive like crap, it just has to be done right.
      And no, it isn't meant to be a hot rod, and even with a turbo, it wouldn't be, it's too large. What it is though is arguably underpowered or adequate at best. Wanting better passing power or acceleration when the vehicle is loaded or has a trailer csn be a safety concern. Driving at higher altitudes like Colorado for instance hurts it too.
      Even if you don't want a turbo, I dont see why it would bother anyone if it was an option, just buy the naturally aspirated and let other people want what they want.

    • @455LT1
      @455LT1 3 роки тому

      @@michaels7984 I just think you'd be basically talking about Genesis money by the time they invest in such hardware for a product that would be super low volume. The MDX Type-S will be the only transverse mounted turbo V6 3 row on the market (that I'm aware of) and the price premium will be substantial. Unless Hyundai/Kia would plan to use that powertrain in another vehicle, I just don't see it making financial sense. The power take-off on the transaxle would have to be much beefier as the rear axle and would have to be engaged much more off the line (to prevent torque steer) and deal with more grunt.
      Instead, Kia is much more likely to develop an electric assist system would could help fill the low end out with more grunt while also improving MPG. I don't see the market supporting an $55-60k Telluride that gets 16/21 mpg on premium.

      @@tacoman1020 because, as with just about every car with traction control made, the computer's first instinct when it detects a tire slipping/going faster than the other tires is to either a)apply brakes or b)reduce engine power. you see it every single time they take a CUV up goldmine hill and even saw it with the jeeps which severely hinders the performance of the all wheel drive in an off-road situation. Jeep's owners manuals actually TELL YOU to turn off ECT/TCS in those situations. "Traction control" is about maintaining vehicle stability when you hit an icy patch of asphalt; it straight up gets in the way when clawing to move forward on a muddy or dusty trail.

    For what we are looking for (3-Row AWD and Leather) here’s the pricing breakdown of what’s available in the market with 3-Row, AWD and real leather: Telluride EX AWD=$40,200, Honda Pilot EX-L AWD=$39,660, Subaru Ascent Limited=$39,970, Chevy Traverse LT Leather AWD=$41,795, 2020 Explorer XLT Active X seats, 2.3L ecoboost and AWD=$43,910, VW Atlas SEL (first level with real leather)4-Motion=$44k+. VW uses fake leather to keep the price under $40K. It looks like Ford will have one of the highest price points come summer which is very unfortunate. If they offer the 3.3L with the 10spd as the base engine maybe that’ll come down but my understanding is the 2.3L eco boost is the base

    Great review, I also watched Alex on Autos review. The Telluride has more combined interior room than almost all of its competitors. My lease on my 2017 GMC Acadia Denali is up this Summer, I am definitely test driving this car. The reliability I feel would be better than an Atlas, plus you have the Kia Warranty. From a styling perspective, this to me looks very European, like an XC90 or X5 at certain angles. Both the interior and exterior look much nicer than the Ascent, Pilot, Highlander, CX9 and it has more interior space than all of those competitors. This car looks hard to beat in the category.

    Not gonna lie, when I first saw the name of the new Kia SUV, I laughed way too hard, bbuutt, I went to the local Kia dealership and checked it out in person, honestly impressed the hell out of me. The Nappa Leather, the 2nd row amenities, and the all around detail Kia took on this vehicle, impressed me. They really stepped their game up. Now it wasn't the awd telluride, just the fwd model. Now I wasn't impressed when I saw the 3.8 under the hood, but I guess a drop in filter and some hotter plugs can help it out, honestly I wish they would've put the 3.3ltr under the hood and bumped the numbers with a turbo, but that's me. I tried a few Kias over the last few years, in general they were nice cars for about the first 50k-60k miles, then little things started going wrong. A turbo hose disconnect, broken window switch, power seat, etc. Everything was covered under warranty, so I wasn’t out of pocket anything, but it got annoying after a while. It has far superior trimmings to anything in this class at a price that is thousands of dollars cheaper. This car is a winner. Period.

    TFL really needs to talk to a well established (10-15 years minimum) engine builder who does stock to high performance rebuilds. I do business with one such person and he has over the last few years had to go into many small displacement turbo powered V6 and 4 cal engines. If someone wants the turbo they either want to stuff the right foot down all the time or see if the 3.5 eco boost in the F-150 can really yank that 9-10K trailer around. In short every engine he has torn down has shown 2-3 times the internal wear of a non turbo engine. If someone wants to get that 200-250K out of an engine then the turbo is certainly not the way to go on a gas engine. If you’ve got the buckets to drop every 80-100K I guess it doesn’t matter. Great all around test/review as usual.👍
