You asked if Em would have been as successful if he wasn’t protested against. I’m the same age as him, so I remember back in the day. The thing was, he was so shocking and obscene, but it wasn’t a gimmick. Check out Genius Check The Rhyme videos that color code the rhyme schemes. Most rap verses have three colors but, Em’s are like rainbows. Technically, he is amazing (esp early stuff) and somehow used all of that craftsmanship to say “F you”. It’s brilliant. Shakespeare made Yo Momma jokes too. Example “Demetrius: Villain, what hast thou done?
Aaron: That which thou canst not undo.
Chiron: Thou hast undone our mother.
Aaron: Villain, I have done thy mother.”
I don't think Em would be as big if he hadn't gone through the media scandals and censorship. However, I think he pretty much brought shock rap to the mainstream attention. Most people weren't aware of those kinds of lyrics existing until Em got so much public lashback. All of a sudden, your 16 year old middle class white girl is melting this CD talking about beating women and drugs. It was a big moment for rap, I think, but for sure he took all the heat. And as one of those 16 year old girls playing Slim Shady on repeat one whole summer, it opened up a whole world of music to me. Still have so much love for Em, and what his music did for me.

"The Way I Am" was his first single off his second album. He wrote it in a day. He turned in his album and they sent it back telling him that none of the songs were single worthy and he needed to write a new song that could be played on the radio as a single. He went home, wrote "The Way I Am" that day.
I heard he was pissed of because the label wanted a song like my name is but eminem couldn't make it. So he just went in. "Im back" was meant to be the lead sigle but a day before the poster went out, he wrote 'the real slim shady' and made that the lead single.

On the other hand, any group with Royce has an unfair advantage from the jump. Oh, and of course R.I.P. Sean Price.
DOUBLE EDIT - Black Milk was the other dude on that track "Losing Out" from Royce you did a little while back - and yes, Milk produced that beat as well - dude is an amazing producer. And on a super technicality, that track Losing Out was really Black Milk feat. Royce, since it was off Black Milk's album (although it also appeared on Royce's Bar Exam mixtape release - I don't remember which edition atm).
