  • The award-winning Canadian journalist, international activist and best-selling author (The Shock Doctrine, No Logo) depicts climate change as more than an “issue.” It’s a civilizational wake-up call delivered in the language of fires, floods, storms and droughts. It demands that we challenge the dominant economic policies of deregulated capitalism and endless resource extraction. Climate change is also the most powerful weapon in the fight for equality and social justice, and real solutions are emerging from the rubble of our failing systems.
This speech was given at the 2014 Bioneers Annual Conference.
Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year.

Fair enough. But on the other hand, middle class consumerism has for many people in different nations just started. Young people have more travel miles than my whole family had in two generations, and the people at the Bioneers gathering may have used an airplane too. Branson is not the drug, he's the dealer, giving to people what they want - that's why he's rich. We all want and need cheap technology, mobility and education. But there's a story behind everything: from our food, to our clothing, to our homes, from our education to our work. We're not the better guys because we listen to good speeches or may have something to do with natural environment. We are at once perpetrators and also individuals who chose a certain lifestyle - in many regards completely ignoring our own ecological footsteps. If we want to change the world, we also need to change ourselves.

People who are rushing to Branson's defense need to read Klein's book. He has promised to redirect most, if not all of the profits he's accumulated from his most climate-intensive activities into renewable energy. Not only has he failed to do that, he's incentivized customers to use his airlines and fought environmental regulations tooth-and-nail. He is part of the problem.

The people that are dismissing Klein's claims should actually read the book. Then do some research on your own. Facts are facts, and science is rarely lies.

We need to Challenge Big Money at its Root- which is the Structuring of the Monetary System. Corporate Dominance is implicit in the how the monetary system is structured.

I think it's a little unfair to call Branson a major polluter. Nobody has really come up with an alternative to air travel. And we all need to fly sometimes. It's not like the auto industry where alternatives have been available for decades.

nice talk .. feels 60yr to late... still no real movement... just like a technological savior, this is kind of a intellectual savior most of the world doesn't understand nevermind agree with. Action = Change the rest just seems like verbale masterbation. Until 100's of millions in first world are willing to lose their pension, retirement, home nothing will change unfortunately i don't see it happening until they lose their future before they fight for it.... with climate change that's to late. Honestly with 20-30yr lag in climate change effects depending on the youtube video I'm pretty sure after 1,000 + videos watched and a well developed sense of the science it's already to late. I mean i think of simple things i never hear mentioned like how greenland is melting under not just on top... so what happens when even 1/2 meter ocean rise goes into the gap's made by the melt under the ice... l 10 meter's ocean rise worth ice probably break off.. then that effect gets down to antarctica does same there which feeds back to greenland, and where already locked into that kind of ocean rise doesn't matter if can suck up the co2 unless you can also lower ocean levels video after video you don't see nasa even asking these what seem to me basic questions. just another 'Climate Change for Dummies" with no real development in the conversation.

I don't agree with Naomi's viewpoint . . . and taking Branson's quote out of context to make a point is a weak argument. We need to do everything (because we've not done enough). Branson's heart is in the right place. Bashing one solution only holds us back. Inventions are expensive to pursue . . . we need to pursue all angles and not bash any creative thinking . . .
