I was SO close to deleting my gibus, but thankfully, I had a bunch of crates that got nuked instead .

Even if one day I will pay for cosmetics and crates I will never throw gibus hat and bombonomicon away. I am so used to them and it felt so good because of EARNING these cosmetics.

I remember, back in 2019, I first started this game.
In 2021, I was told by a guy in a community server that if I deleted my Mercenary Badge he'd give me a really cool weapon as part of a video he was doing. I obliged, and he sent me a Gas Passer, at the time I thought it was such a good idea, and now I can't even hunt the user down because upon learning how bad the item was I used it to craft a pyro token and made the Rainblower lmao

if you really insist on getting it back to some degree, purchase a steam account that was made like 5 years ago. perhaps you can check if the account had TF2 and the mercenary badge.
of course, it isnt the exact same thing. but it's something.

The same thing happened to me. I also deleted my mercenary badge a long time ago. Yeah, it's a bummer, but there are alternative ways to know when you first booted up TF2. One way you could do it is to find your earliest achievement and go by that. For me, it was the achievement you get for completing the "tutorial," which I unlocked December 5th of 2014.
The tutorial is permanently glitched for some people tho, personally I use my years of service because I joined Steam same day I first opened tf2

I deleted mine about a few months into playing, but I managed to find it in my inventory history with all the stats. Check your inventory history for it! mine says I started playing in 2015
I went through the same thing, really upset steam didnt do anything about it. Especially how special these items were because a friend helped me buy them for me
I got the same scam guy apparently, and it was the most hilarious thing I had ever done: He was like "I accidentally reported your steam account", and I was like "yeah, no worries bro". He tried to explain to me, that I need to proceed with the link to discord, and I didn't know he was trying to scam me, I was just super chill with him. I was like no worries, if I get banned, I will unban myself via official steam support.
Just a theory, but I heard somewhere that tf2 items have a "serial number" of sorts, down to the individual. That may be why it can't be recovered, as I'd think they wouldn't just have a bin of deleted items, especially one years old.
This is how I feel with literally every achievement hat, I deleted all of them like a moron, only thing that I "got back" was a gibus, since you buy the upgraded ones.

Oh! I actually you can send in a report to Steam Support, and in cases of "Deletion" specifically, you can have them undo things like that. But ONLY for Deleted items

Sentimental value is considered mostly in my loadout. A lot of my items my mum bought for me. I wear my Mann co hat, my mercenary badge, and that's it. Those are sentimental in the way my mum did not buy them for me.

I remember during a Halloween event of some sort, I had the option to trade in some cosmetics in exchange for a better cosmetic (or something big along those lines) and I sent away my gibus and mercenary badge.

Litteraly my whole backpack feels like this badge to me.
I spent thousand of hours trading as a f2p just to get one hat on every class, and I was so proud of finding the paint colors that would make everything suit so nicely to my miscs.
And every year some random strangers would add me to trade me those items with rare halloween spells for 1/4 of the actual value, but they'll never get that money can't buy memories.

I started playing TF2 recently, but the Mercenary Badge thing is now reminding me of how in Club Penguin, I don't know how long I played it. There was a tab you could open which showed the exact date and time you started playing Club Penguin, like with the Mercenary Badge. I took a few screenshots of my house and puffles before it shutdown but never got round to opening that tab.
I know it was roughly 2010ish, but that's still gonna haunt me for years that I never looked at it lol.
I luckily still have the mercenary badge, but my gibus wasn't as lucky :(

For what it's worth, if you purchase the Orange Box on your new account, it'll give you the Proof of Purchase. I'm pretty sure the SoF is gone forever though.

Even if I deleted my Gibus, Pyrovision Goggles and Mercenary Badge, I can't agree with the 6:22 section more, once I realized the mistake I have done I started treating every single TF2 item of mine as a holy possession, like that one time one guy saw me getting his Scattergun, asked me why I did it and I replied with "Yeah, I have it because it makes me feel rich", and he just straight up gave me a Night Terror Scattergun and my first 3 cosmetics which I'll never get rid off. Who could imagine that a silly hat game would create so much memories.
I remember the first day I played TF2 like a few years ago I booted up an official Valve server and got gifted a Dalokohs Bar by a continuously traunting Heavy before the round began and they proceeded to aimbot me through the walls and then I got kicked for “Trying to kill someone” in a game where the point is to kill people. I didn’t play for a while after that, and now I basically just play singleplayer with Bot Overhaul installed because even if they aren’t very nice at least they don’t hack in the casual lobby for fun.
once i went to a server and it said "write !items for free items" and it gave me all of the achievements, but i didnt know how many items i would get so i had to free some space, i deleted gibus, goggles and mercenery badge and others just to have all the weapons unlocked

When I started playing TF2 back in 2013, I originally did delete my Gibus as backpack space was limited, however, I reached out to valve and simply asked for its return, and up until 2015 I believe they did this, they happily returned it to me with a “thank you” for playing our game message all with it, I only regret not asking for my monoculous and horseless headless horseman’s head back at the same time, but I’m glad the Gibus is back in my inv
As someone who has to deal with a similar experience, it makes me wish we could just make the W+M1 pyros real along with Miss Pauling so we could have them melt the people who think it is funny to swipe items and accounts
Valve actually gave me my mercanary back, and i think it was after their no recovering items policy. They also gave me back my iron curtain minigun, when i wanted to make it a specialized killstreak, and accidentaly put it into the kit, not knowing how they work.

GOD bless the fact TF2 gives you those backpack extenders on Smissmas, i feel as though a _lot_ of my favorite items would just never have been or would have been wiped instead.
Speaking of a few sentimental items i have...
- Spiral Sallet. It just looks so _cool_ and i wish it was colorable. Also it's something other than the gibus.
- Smissmas Sweater Panic Attack. I swear i genuinely cannot look at a normal Panic Attack without it looking wrong.
- Indubitably Green Gibus.
And, FINALLY...
- The Director's Vision Taunt. It's literally the only F2P taunt possible and i hold it dear to my heart along with all the other items.
(There's also a few others, but these are the most relevant to me.)
I own a Wintery Wisp Runner's Rhythm that I only got after an insane journey through tf2 trading, getting scammed, and getting help from an absolute god-tier trader.
To others, it's only worth 15 keys.
But to me, it's priceless.
Side note: I got scammed by trading for what a guy claimed was a strange festive scattergun but was in fact a strange festiVIZED scattergun. Years later, I still use it and have racked up over 1000 kills out of pure spite.

I started playing tf2 (On my own steam account) around 2010-11ish.
I decided in about October of last year to get into trading as it was always something I wanted to do. I started with 1 refined metal working my way up. I had a decent little inventory before this but because almost every item I had I liked to using, I decided to start scrap banking instead of selling those items. I starting with 1 or 2 refined that I had in my backpack. I own several unusuals now and the main items I love to collect are spelled items since I had about 3 or 4 back in the day younger me traded off for practically nothing. I also deleted my Mercenary Badge as a F2P to make room for all those 'cool new item drops.' that and my Gibus, Seal mask, and ALMOST my Vintage Pyro goggles. I believe people who have deleted there badge are in the same group of people who have gone through a lobotomy, they seem to be missing something. Valve really needs to add that deleted item ticket into the game.
My most treasured item in my backpack is The Black Rose knife. I just so happen to have it even though I really didn't play TF2 a lot until a couple years back just because as a kid my brother got me to play TF2 with him once and I was an addict when it came to free to play steam games. So i played both games (dont even remember which game gave you the knife) and when I logged back in I realized I had it. Idk how rare it is and its untradeable, but just the feeling of owning an item that is no longer obtainable or at least very hard to obtain through underhanded means is so cool to me. I dont even play Spy either. It's something, like my medal, that has been in my backpack since the beginning.
For me, that badge would be my first (and only) australium - i got it on my very first MvM tour - it was a knife for Spy.
i sold it on the steam market, and used the money to buy GTA5 which was on sale at that time.
but about 2 years later i realized that i actually sold it for much less than it was worth, nowadays i'd either kept it, or sold it for keys. im still very pissed about it, and remember it everytime i play mvm

Can relate to this. I deleted my badge and gibus hat around 2015 due to not having inventory space. Thankfully steam support has allowed me to get my gibus hat again but the mercenary badge was gone forever.
i deleted my gibus to free up space thinking to myself "hey this silly hat is a sign of being a noob and it seems i can get a cooler upgraded version of it later anyway, so might as well delete it to free up space" not being aware it's basically a personal item you can only ever get once. i remember regretting it so much when that SiN's G.E.W.P. trend came out and i can't play around as a gibus engineer

i have sufered even worse, 5 years ago... i was a newbie and with no backpack space i deleted my badge, my gibus, my pyrogoogles, and any existent free cosmetic i had, they didnt meant too much in those times, now everytime i see a paint bucket i just want to use it on my gibus, but well, it isnt anymore with me so...
I always celebrate my joined date, I stripped all down my cosmetics, taunts, and even stopped using voice commands and chats and wear my badge and gibus, so I can reenact and remember I was back then on HOW FUCKING DIFFICULT TO *voice communication is not available for this account*

I feel like losing your entire tf2 backpack is a canon event for every player
A saving grace I personally can fall back on is the fact that Steam will keep track of your account's purchase history, all the way back to its' first purchase. Somehow or another, as a kid I'd managed to coerce my mother in getting me some unlocks off the Mann Co. Store (obviously stupid in hindsight).
To this day I still use my first purchase as a metric for figuring out when I started playing, sure it's not as accurate as the badge itself, there's a 16 day gap between the date on my Steam's "Years of Service" badge compared to my first purchase, but at least it accounts for something.
I've since regreted in deleting my mercenary badge, but I'm glad to know that my Steam Badge "Years of Service" also mean the day I first started playing TF2!
My second ever hat drop was a Towering Pillar of Hats. I traded it for a Direct Hit I scrapped like a week later.
This is so relatable, I remember I deleted my mercenary badge cause at the time I was a F2P and I needed to make space in my inventory for some item drop. Even though I joined in late 2021 I still made so many memories with TF2 even till now, but I look back everyday and still regret deleting that thing
There are only 2 things I regret more than anything in my TF2 career.
-Giving my first unusual unbox away for a strange knife of all things (I was young and thought Spy was the best class ever, and I really wanted one)
-Gifting my Black Rose to a friend... safe to say we are not friends anymore. I don't even know what he's doing now, he still has it in his inventory with the gift tag on it so Maybe that means something? Idk, could just be to flaunt the worth it has since that method of giving untradable items to others was patched.

My most prized possession in TF2 is a field tested (I think) civic duty strange kill streak panic attack with a description edit. It’s basically the dictionary example of “there are many like it but this one is mine”

Luckily for me, I was given a replacement version of my achievement items back. As soon as they gave me my gibus back I strangified it.

At least I still have my pan. It's the original one I got from having L4D2. I love it. I even put Bacon Grease on it to make it strange(back when it was cheap). That's mine and only mine.
I ended up deleting my Gibus on my original account, and after a while, I started to miss it, despite not wearing it whatsoever, but the support group also denied my request to get it back. Now, I have a new account, starting off fresh with new items, new hats/cosmetics & taunts. I’m actually happy that I have these ‘newbie’ items in my backpack, and in every single one of my classes, my D loadout is always the Gibus, Pyrovision googles, and mercenary badge.
I did the exact same thing with it and my gibus. I wrote to steam one day many years later and they actually gave it to me saying that they dont usually do it but they were going to make an exception and felt special. Maybe it has to do with how much money you have spend or maybe the time playing the gsme (i started right after tf2 became f2p) or maybe just the person reading the steam support requests. I would say you should keep trying

I started playing in 2011 or 2012. I deleted that merc badge around 2016-ish. I started gravitating towards Overwatch such that TF2 wasn't helping anymore. Combine that with the depression I was going through seriously clouding my judgement and I went on a spree. I sold any item I could sell and deleted anything I couldn't. I even sold my Genuine Alien: Isolation items. I hope they're still out there somewhere, being worn by an Alien enthusiast.
I would go on a shorter deletion spree sometime after, but I came to my senses and vowed to never do it again.
Valve took mercy on me, and a rep granted me three deleted items of my choosing. I went with the crafting materials for the Headtaker, along with one additional item that I can't actually recall at the moment. I'm thankful for that.

2:17 I also got a scam message exactly like that in 2019 on a horrible day. Lost over 180 dollars worth of items and steam support didn't give anything back to me even though they do it to others. I lost many valuable items like my first taunt, the square dance that I got from a giveaway from a twitch streamer who's a great friend of mine but the scammer did leave my unique quality weapons behind, that included my ham shank I got from that friend. I still have that ham and use it. Somehow the steam market trade hold saved two of my stranges, at the time knowing that I still had something was great because the day I lost all my items was and still is the worst and most stressful day of my life.
Btw, I didn't delete any of my items like the badge, but the game deleted my achievement item force a nature for no reason and steam support didn't give it back even though it's a UNTRADABLE item that has no value :(
I've tried to get my stolen items back but I've only been able to get one cosmetic back out of like 30. Most of them have been wiped off of backpack,tf so I can't even find their current owners.
I've also fell for that scam but luckily I got my uncle to message steam support since he's had a steam account for over a decade and I got it back. I do remember in my early days of playing deleting my gibus and my haunted scrap. Till this day I wish I still had the scrap.

Started playing in 2014, bc i was a f2p (child) with no money, i deleted some cosmetics and even transmuted some, and now i have +5 empty backpacks that miss having a gibus there... even the HHH hat is gonne, even some old achievements items that are almost impossible to get legir now, are gone. one of my notable items is a SMG with a pretty cool warpaint and a killstreak with matching sheen.
i traded it from a person in a community server for not too much, but i just kinda remembered it and it feels nice having that item.
i also have a sun-on-a-stick that some guy gave me trough a gift-a-pult a very long time ago, since then, every time i get a gift-a-pult on christmass, i immiedetely get sun-on-a-stick and send it to some random guy lol

a few months ago, i got hacked and lost all my cosmetics and special weapons. the only cosmetics i didnt lose were the halloween-only ones, and my mercenary badge, my gibus, my pyrovision, and my mann co cap. i literally breathed a sigh of relief when i saw i still had them
Steam actually restores deleted items if you request them politely through a support ticket. I got 5 deleted items out of 9 and thankfully one of them was the mercenary badge. However, the date that is shown is the date when I created my Steam account instead of displaying the date when I started playing TF2 but still, I got it back and that's what matters the most.

I actually lost my first steam account to a scam like that. It's the same type of message from someone I was starting to regularly play tf2 with and boom backstab. I remember not wanting to do anything on my computer for ages. Then, I built up the courage to start a new account and get back on tf2. Though that experience has made it rather hard to make friends with randoms in pubs, just in fear of being backstab again.

My friend fell for that exact same scam just last month. Lost his entire steam account as a result. So life lesson everyone! If someone says they "accidentally" reported your steam account, its almost definitely a scammer wnd you should cut all communication with them immediately. It requires way too many coordinated clicks to "accidentally" report a steam account.
for my 12th birthday my cousin who got me into the game gifted me my first hat, a killers kabuto painted green, it meant so much to me, later the same year i got a random drop schadenfreude, i had no idea how crazy that was until years down the line.
I traded both of them back to the same cousin for an Apparatchik's Apparel
I also traded away the genuine respectless rubber glove i redeemed from my pyro action figure.
I've spent the last week or so trying to track them down, but there's little progress, here's hoping i find that killers kabuto
I accidentally deleted my Gibus when I first started the game, and I sent valve a support ticket basically politely explaining I was a noob and didn't realize it was a one time item, and deleted it to make room for some random tf2 item, and they actually gave me my Gibus back!! They basically said "Sure thing, have your Gibus, but don't delete it again."
Be polite, Be efficient, have a plan to be grateful when valve employees show kindness.

UA-cam recommended this video late but I still hope Valve listens to that community suggestion that would allow you to retrieve achievement items like the badge and gibus if you had deleted them.
I started playing TF2 recently even though I’ve been watching TF2 content for years. I was recently considering deleting my Gibus to make space in my inventory before stumbling upon this video.

i used my unusual haunted metals to craft the hat instead of the headtaker, i almost looked up if the hat would be unusual, but i decided it would make no sense not to be, i’ve never held a horseless headless horsemann’s headtaker on my own account

I deleted my merc badge, a few months after I started playing I think. I really regret doing that, but not for the reason of checking when I first joined TF2, because I actually downloaded the game literally at the start of the year, January 1st, 2021. I didn't realise that a few years later it would be quite sentimental to look back upon, as a token of my first exposure to TF2.
