An update: Spent the weekend doing this job. Your video was INVALUABLE! I literally just played it step by step to keep track of my progress. It has all of the important details without any of the fluff, which makes it perfect for instructional use. this video should be THE top video for the 3vze engine... like this seriously needs to circulate on YotaTech, it made it way clearer than months of research did for me.
The 1994 3VZE (and 95) use a hydraulic tensioner which was the only difference between this video and my truck. It is installed directly on the fan bracket and I recommend installing the fan bracket and tensioner and releasing the grenade pin BEFORE installing any of the crankshaft parts (cover, sprocket) so that you can be SURE that your timing is correct.
One other tip: If you remove the camshaft sprockets (which you do to replace the camshaft seals) you can MUCH easier get at those 13mm bolts for the No 2 tensioner, behind the dust cover. I could not for the life of me get those two rear bolts installed again, but if you remove the entire dust cover behind the camshafts, it is like 1 extra step for an hour of saved frustration. And if you are already this far on your 200,xxx miles truck, replacing the seals is a good idea anyway.
I had a hell of an easy time getting off the camshafts and crankshaft bolts, cannot say enough good things about the milwaukee 12V fuel.. took me 3 seconds to get all those bolts off and I didn't have to mess with the starter trick.
My truck idled really high at startup (2000 rpm) and I was SUPER worried my timing was off, even though I felt really confident in my timing belt install. Once coolant started circulating, it dropped right back down to 1000. So- if you are like me and having high anxiety over your rpm's, let it heat up and add some coolant before tearing it down again. :)
Thanks for guiding me through this massive project!
This is a super helpful response Madelyn! Thank you so much for sharing the tips about the hydraulic tensioner, and getting to those #2 tensioner bolts while having the cam pulleys off. I’m so happy the video helped you. I don’t like fluffy videos either lol. Good on you for giving your truck some love at 200k! Cheers to another 200 (LOVE Toyotas)!
What a breath of fresh air! Clear. To the point. Precise. Easy to follow. Thorough. Didn’t spent the first 3 minutes droning about nothing. I’ve been in fear of doing this job for ages. After watching this I actually feel confident that I can pull it off.
Thank you so much Jason! I did the same thing as you and couldn’t find a clear video so I made one :-) I like all my videos to be super to-the-point so keep your eyes peeled for more and let me know how the job goes for you!!
Best instructional video I have ever watched on anything. Thank you for your time, talent and patience. God Bless!!
Thank you! I’m so glad you found this video helpful :-)
I've seen a lot of these videos with a lot of fluff, but this was straight to the point.
Just realized that the last time I did my belt on my 4runner was in 2003, and I was trying to remember if you needed to take the intake plenum off to replace that cursed upper pulley. Thank you!
Gearing up for the job can be a task in itself! Glad to hear you’re taking care of your Toyota!
This should become the template for what a repair video should be. Thank you so much. Your skill was shining when you popped that spring onto its bracket with the vice-grip.
Thank you so much Ross! Springs are my second least favorite thing about automotive only second to the smell of diff oil. Otherwise I love knowing how things go together and being able to fix vehicles with my own two hands. I’m so glad you found the video helpful!!
@@GirlieGarage Enough so that I posted it to our '89-'95 Toyota Pickup Facebook Group. I hope you get a ton of subscribers. cheers
@@RossWilliamsDC Thank you! I hope the video helps more people!!
@@GirlieGarage very helpful👍🏻
This is literally the best video on this job. I’m so happy you happened to work on a 3vze. I’m about done with the tear down now, this is the first time I’ve ever done a job like this and I’ve had to pause a few times to wait and save up for tools or parts or to find the time to work on it. Sometime soon though I think I should finish it and finally give this old 4Runner another chance.
Thank you so much! Definitely take the time to bring your 4Runner back to life! They are such great vehicles and if we take care of them they will take care of us.
So well scripted such a very impressed the previous comet said it all. AWESOME SAUCE!!!❤
Haha! Thank you so much. This video did take a long time and I’m so glad you like it
Thank you SO much for this video! You gave me complete confidence to tackle this job on my 3.0 88 Pickup. You didn't skip any steps, and explained everything. I subscribed.
Yes! So proud of you! I always do my best so I am really glad you found this video helpful :-)
I agree, the video is so helpful and complete with all the steps and reminders!
She’s the greatest tutorial mechanic
@@GirlieGarage Hi, this is a great video! Can you tell me how you removed the pulley bold after using it to set the timing belt. Im at the step after setting the new timing belt but then I get stuck trying to figure how to re-remove the pulley bolt after using it to set the the tensioner to 27ft lbs.
@@turbobandz4269 If you’re talking about the crank pulley bolt, I just used a breaker bar with a deep socket 19mm on it and did kind of a quick jerk to remove the crank pulley bolt after using it for any turning of the engine
Wow. I’m about to do a water pump and timing belt on my girlfriends 1995 3.0L 4runner and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the video. The camera angle, quality and your in-depth descriptions make this just absolutely perfect. This video will help me save $. I really do appreciate it. Sincerely.
The best tutorial vid! Torque spec for Every bolt is so awesome. Loved the vid now I’m going to tackle it when my parts come in. Thank you sooooo much!!!
Awesome! Let me know if you have questions and good luck!!
This is one of the best diy tutorials on UA-cam, period! So precise and well explained and shot, amazing! Hope you do more 3vze/4Runner videos!
I’m so glad you found this video helpful! I make videos on the vehicles I work on, and also when I have time (when my customers have time). I do enjoy working on these 4Runners, and actually picked up a 2.7l for myself recently! I hope you continue to enjoy your 4runner for many years to come!
your video really was helpful I had a 93 Toyota 4runner v6 3.0 .Ive been doing all the work on it . Just wanted say Thank you ,hope to see more of your videos.
Congratulations! It’s pretty satisfying to do the work yourself :-)
This one of the best instructional videos around! You are such a great speaker and instructor. Thank you so much!
Thank YOU! I am doing my best. I am just like you all where I look at UA-cam videos before I start a job and I didn't like what was out there so I made my own 😃
Thank you for including EVERY STEP!!! This is a complicated job but you show that it is actually doable
I have so many positives about your channel. I really appreciate that you list the years that are relevant to the job you're performing. I can't find any videos on an 1988 sr5 but I'm pretty confident I can tackle this job now. What I'm doing is a little different but I gained more knowledge from this video than all the hours I did reading forums and scanning thru other videos. You go step by step, video isn't jumpy and you give tips and note places that require extra attention. You're amazing. Thank you!!
Thank you Paige! This is exactly why I spend 20+ hours filming and editing major videos like this, so they can help people! I’m really grateful for you leaving a comment to let me know it helped you. I do offer consulting so if you get stuck just head to my website for my contact info and I’ll be here for you.
I’m finally putting mine back together after a full rebuild after a year of sitting and everything in boxes. I’m going backwards from your video and it’s been a huge help! Especially w the brackets
Wow! A Year! Kudos to you, excited you're going to have your Toyota back :-)
For the upper water hose pulley-I took off the fuel line screw and simply moved it out of the way. Took me two minutes to get it off and no screws or sockets lost. 😎
Love this, thank you for sharing some helpful tips!
Best video I have found on the 4Runner timing belt and water pump replacement! Also you shared foot pounds of torque on bolts I couldn’t find anywhere! You made it look so easy!😂Great job! Thank you!
So glad you found this video helpful and good luck completing yours!!
Thank you so much for this video! I used this video to install new drive belts on my 1990 Toyota pickup 3vze yesterday. I also have a coolant leak at the inlet tube and learning how to take that off was super helpful! I plan to use this video again sometime soon to do my timing belt replacement as I'm almost at 100,000 miles. This video was done with so much thought and care, can't thank you enough for how much it's helped me!
WONDERFUL! I'm so glad that pieces of this video were helpful for other tasks and that you were able to accomplish them yourself! Great job!
This is a perfectly made video with incredible detail, I am going to do my head gasket job and this part is what had me a bit worried. My cousin rebuilt mine but didn't do it right and now I will do it on my own.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes for you and if you have any pointers for everyone else after completing it!
By far the best video on the subject I am doing my belt tensioner pump and fan bracket in 2 days I just ordered a new tensioner pulley thanks to ur video! I don’t wanna do this twice
Absolutely! Get everything done while you’re in there!
Hands down the BEST video on UA-cam. So clear and the camera work is amazing. Thank you so much!!
Thank you Quinn! I really spent a lot of time editing this one, so I’m glad you found it helpful. I just did one for the 5VZ-FE as well :-)
Contemplating doing this job on my little Toyota truck. Thank you for such an informative video. If I embark on this adventure I’ll definitely watch and rewatch your video. Thanks again.
Thank you Jean Paul! I also offer consulting so if you decide to do the job you can ask me questions before and during to make it easier! I just did this with a gentleman last weekend who only had mild technical knowledge. Let me know if you would find that helpful! My contact info is on my website :-)
This is the best video that shows how that No. 2 tensioner comes off, much appreciated!
So happy to hear that the video helped you! Thank you for letting me know :-)
This video was great! I was stumped on the idler pulley and your explanation of the removal saved me some serious time. Thanks again!
If you mean with the spring, then I totally know what you mean…it was not fun 😂 I’m glad you found the video helpful!
This is a very informative video and by giving torque specs you show incredible attention to detail .
Excellent video, thank you. About to do this job on my 1990. Shop manuals are great, but I have found it very helpful over the years to actually see the work being done beforehand, really helps you get your bearings once you are staring at your own motor.
I totally agree. I also find it helpful to watch what other people did but then sometimes I tweak that to find a way that works better for me. Good luck and let me know if you run into anything you can't conquer yourself!
Getting ready to dive into my 95 4runner to do this exact job - this video is amazing. I already had an idea of what needed to be done but the extra clarity and amount of detail that you put (TORQUE SPECS?!?!) into this is unparalleled. My mechanic quoted me $1600 to do this very job but with this video, I'm pretty confident I can save that cash.
Good luck! You’ve got this!
Awesome video, just what people need. I used this video to do my timing belt and water pump, and everything went smoothly. Thanks!
Sweet video, really clear filming! I will be doing this in the next few weeks once the parts arrive. Might just watch this video step by step!
Thank you! Let me know how it goes!!
I'm here refreshing what it takes to do this on my 94'. This will be my 3rd timing belt, but it's been about 10 years since I last had a go at it. Thanks for the refresher. I even learned a few things to make it easier that I was struggling with last time(s). This job was a real trick before UA-cam! I really appreciate your style and pace. Keep it up!
Thank you Jud! I’m so glad you found it useful! You can always post other helpful tips and tricks here after you’ve completed the job if you found a cool new way to do something that wasn’t in the video. Good luck!!
How many miles you have on it
I just needed to change out the fan bracket, but your video showed exactly what I needed to do. It also allowed me to inspect the timing belt. Thank you!
That's great news! Thank you for sharing that this video helped Dale :-)
You did an amazing job. I could only reason that the few people who gave you thumbs down, are fools that need to see every detailed done like screwing every nut and bolt down, they want to see the silicone actually being spread on the thermostat housing, etc. I've rebuilt this 3.0 vze engine for my 1991 4Runner sr5 4x4. Probably one of the most complicated engines I worked on & I've worked on nothing fanzy. Even rebuilding a diesel engine on my 1980 Turbo Diesel Mercedes wasn't a pain like this engine. I replaced all the vacuum lines & hoses with at least 6 inches extra in length since the original length are so short & tight that there is no wiggle room to see if any of them have become lose, cracked, broken, or slipped off to create bad performance on the engine like sudden rpm surges from vacuum leaks or hesitations. The reason I got around to your video is because I'm actually replacing the water pump because the water pump gasket broke around 1 of the bolts in the area of the thermostat housing but between the water pump & the engine block. Had it not been for that, the water pump & thermostat probably had another 2 or 3 more years of service which would have been ideal to then replace also timing belt & other parts; now I have to do it 2,3 years earlier thanks to some cheap Autozone gasket & water pump. I could have been installing my newly rebuilt 5.0 engine on my convertible Mustang GT even though summer is almost gone here in Southern Cali. I also took videos and photos of my 3.0 3vze engine rebuilt process but it was faster to come to watch youtube videos for a refresher into what I need to take apart. Yours being the 3rd I watched & the best one I've seen all including the past ones I saw. You mentioned the parts to remove, the size bolts & nuts, how many they are, the process, & torque. Great job, keep up the good work. God bless'ya.
Thank you so much for your detailed and heart-warming comment. I’m so happy you found my video to be helpful. I actually just replaced the water pump on a 5vzfe for the same reason (working on editing the video now).
It’s so nice to hear of others who love their Toyota’s as much as I love Toyota’s! Keep that 91, and all your optimism and positive energy going!
10/10 this walkthrough was great
Thank you so much for the detailed video with all the spec info provided. You are a lifesaver and my 1990 4Runner is back in business! Cant thank you enough!
Heck yes! Love to hear good news!
Great video. Very informative. That observation was made from an old mechanics perspective. Thank you.
Wow! What a huge job! Very helpful!
Awesome Video! Exactly what I was looking for 👏🏼 everything was explained clearly and in great detail. Much appreciated!
That's great news! Thank you for letting me know it was helpful :-) I'll do my best to keep creating great content!
Awesome video! Super helpful, goes over everything that's important without dragging on.
All of that in a 12 minute video! You deserve a medal
Haha! Thank you! I do my best to edit out all the stuff that isn't important so you can get the best points when you need them. Glad you enjoyed it!
You actually helped me out more than most yota forums did with this video thank you
Glad to hear the video was helpful :-)
Agree with below comments. EXCELLENT explanation/presentation. Bookmarking this vid for further work on my '89 4Runner.
Thank you Salmon! I'm so glad you found it helpful!
Why would anyone dislike this video. It was just about perfect 👌🏻
Thank you!! I’m so glad you found it helpful :-)
Nice job. Wish I had this 2 months ago when I was doing it! PS I had trouble getting the belt tight enough so the marks to lined up after two revolutions: so I clamped the belt to the crank pullies and turned the camshaft pully one notch behind, then put the belt on it. That way I could turn the shaft with a ratchet and run the belt into the tensioner pully using leverage. Worked perfect.
I've rebuilt several engines including this 3.0 3VZE engine. The timing belt installation is always a little challenging. I never get it right the first 2 tries. And yes, doing it as you mention it is probably the best & fastest way to do it but most people won't admit it. That's the way I do it. But if the timing belts have the 2 marks on the timing belt to align with the camshaft timing marks, it makes things a lot easier.
Very well done. Easy to understand. Thank you for sharing this information, Much appreciated
thank you for taking the time to share this with us. it's very helpful.
You're welcome. Sounds like you might have an idea about the hours of filming, then the 10+ hours of editing it takes just to produce a quality video. I'm so glad you found it helpful!
Nice job! The video was very informative. Easy to follow. I have a 1993 that I'm having work done tomorrow.
Best timing belt replacement video on youtube!
what a fantastic video! thank you so much for spending the time to create this for all of us to learn from! much appreciated ☺🥰
Thank you for leaving this happy comment Mike, it was definitely 20+ hours of filming and editing. I hope you find some other cool stuff on my channel (maybe even something you can share with others in your life that don't have as much automotive experience). Good luck with your 3vze!
I just completed this operation on a 90 Toyota pickup SR5 4x4 3.0
It was an ordeal ! Everything ran smooth until I had to torque the crankshaft bolt. I ended up fabricating one out of a piece of steel. ....... thanks again for the tutorial...... J
That’s pretty epic that you were able to fabricate something that worked. Congrats and bravo!
Thank you, this helped me tremendously on my 1990 3VZE!
Great Job! Love the detailed explanation and torques.
Thanks. Walked me right through this job. Made it a lot easier and took the guessing, cussing and throwing wrenches across the shop right out of it lol. Great video. I’ll have my son subscribe to your channel seeing how it’s always his vehicle we’re having to repair lol.
Your comment made me chuckle! Thank you and good luck!

Absolutely superior. Bravo!
That was a terrific video . Very detailed. Good job 👍

I think I've given your video about 400 views replacing my timing belt, water pump, and thermostat. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together.
Of course! I’m so glad you found it helpful. You got past the speed bump of breaking the crank pulley bolt loose? I tried to reply to your other comment but it disappeared
@@GirlieGarage that was a false alarm/panic attack. TDC remained unchanged after I cranked it many times but the belt L, R, Center marks slowly drifted to the left with each crank so I panicked. Job is done now and the truck seems just fine. Forums were saying ignore the belt marks...just watch the notches on cams and crank shaft. Getting the crank shaft pulley back on was though... ended up doing a work around where I cut an old alternator belt in half and double wrapped it around the crankshaft pulley and viced the other end to the frame for counter pressure so I could tighten to 181 lbs
@@tylerkaplan2799 yes! When you install a new belt you use those marks to line it up correctly the first time, then they rarely line back up again (I forget how many revolutions but there is a mathematical equation for determining how many revolutions until all marks realign). Yay!! Congrats on getting your truck all back together. Such a satisfying feeling to get things done with your own two hands
@@GirlieGarage for sure! Thanks for the help. Two solid days from dawn to dusk and many skipped meals but I'm so proud it came out perfect

Great job and super easy to understand and just incredibly helpful thank you
Nice!, this is REALLY helpful! Local shop was going to charge move $1000 for this job!
Yeah, it is a big job and depending on where you source your parts (like if you got them directly from Toyota) it could be really expensive. Glad you found this helpful!
Amazing how you explain everything easy to understand and follow thank you

Great video! Very thorough.
It’s about time I found a female mechanic who is not exploding the female side. Frst time I saw someone recommend the bump method for the crank pulley on UA-cam it’s awesome! Works on most cars too! And it’s nice to see someone using proper tools craftsman, husky lifetime warranty stuff without having to pay for somebody else’s tool truck!
Thank you so much! Your comment literally made my week. Filming and editing this video took almost 20 hours so I’m a so grateful that people find it helpful. I’m also not made of money, and I’m working on the ground like many of our “UA-cam academy” friends/followers. I do know a lot of other badass lady mechanics. Wow I'm impressed to see a girl do this. Seems like she has good skills to coming from a fellow technician
awesome love your work. very detailed
Great video! Important to note after 1992 the 3vze switched to a hydraulic timing belt tensioner so you have to remove that before you can take out the fan pulley housing. The tensioner is 2 12mm bolts. A little bit tricky to get to those bolts.
Thank you for the note!!!
