Stalingrad from 1993 is superb. A WW2 movie from the view of the german Wehrmacht soldiers.
Did you know that the German actor (Thomas Kretschmann) plays the German officer in both the 2013 and 1993 lead roles. Strange actually!

I would add to your list: “Unbroken”. The story of Olympic track star & WW II pilot Louis Zamperini’s struggle for survival as a Japanese POW.
Have to disagree. While "Unbroken" is a terrific story, the film was an absolute dog.
They also once made a sequel to Unbroken, which was a big flop. DVD single.

Would be nice to mention the Forgotten Battle was a true battle lead by the Canadian Army. Canadians are still greatly thanked by the Dutch for their liberation
Of course it’s takes the Netherlands to place the Canadian Army front and Center; we are often overlooked but never forgotten and we’re always feared by the Nazis.

Canadian her the Canadian army by that stage had mamany British and Polish troops attached to it due to a shortage of manpower we should never forget
At times I think most Americans are not even sure Canadians were in WW! or WW2. Ironic as they were there from day 1 unlike the Americans. Many were dead, wounded or in prison before America finally got the hell into the war thank god.

I think one of the absolute best wwii shows was a German miniseries/series about 4 friends before during and after the war called Generation War. I think a couple of the friends didn’t make it thru the war and it shows two of them meeting back up after it was over. Very unique perspectives and very compelling. It shows a movie doesn’t have to come from Hollywood to be great. Highly recommend it.

One of my favourite WW2 films is Downfall, about Hitler’s final days in the bunker. Superbly acted and all the more realistic for being in the German language. It’s the one that spawned all those Hitler rant parodies you see on UA-cam.
I’ve seen so many remixes of the bunker scene tho. I’ll be waiting for Hitler to crack wise. 😂

A tremendous 4 part series starring Hugh Laurie (House) and Mark Ruffalo; the story is about a blind French teenaged girl and a German soldier whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of WW II. Excellent acting, great story ! Don't miss this one... 5 out of 5 stars for me !! Also on Netflix...

I have become addicted to all types of foreign (non USA) movies on Netflix. I have been so amazed with these films and I especially like the filming aspect compared to Hollywood films. Hollywood films give me a headache with all of the unnecessary and excessive fake camera shake and switching camera views 7 times in 10 seconds which I rarely see on Non-USA movies.

The trouble with Fury is that German kids take out a tank, but the Wehrmacht elite can’t.
I thought everything about Fury was a very good war film, very realistic tank battles, up until the last 10 minutes of the movie where they held off an entire batallion, then it went Hollywood.
Some scenes were ok but Brad Pitt pretty much played Aldo Raine from Inglorious Bastards and was a bit much. The ending with one disabled tank taking out an entire SS battalion was just too silly
@@s4awd2 Audie Murphy's stand on the back of an M10 is reckoend to have cost about 50 German lives, but agreed, the endng is pure Hollywood.
SS was not Wehrmacht. But yes, it's absurd, that seasoned SS veterans can't take out a single immobilized M4 tank without getting hammered. It's just stupid and far from reality.
And Das Boot is by far the BEST war movie ever made.
Das Boot is not currently being shown on Netflix (in the US), which is probably why it wasn't mentioned in this video. Just a guess. :)

Land of Mine. Stunning film that tells the story of young German POWs at the end of the war who are forced to dig up the mine laden coast of Denmark. Awesome.

That was a really good film.
I felt so sorry for the young German lads clearing the mines . They were dying and didn't deserve to.
The Nazis were evil and even destroyed their own people one way or another.
Land of Mine is not available on Netflix, but I did find it through my Amazon Prime Video account. Definitely on my must-watch list. Now I just need to find a way to get more time to watch all of the movies I want/need to watch.

Yup. One of the best in the genre, for sure.
My favorite WWII movie is the adaption of Kurt Vonnegut's "Mother Night". No combat in the movie but lots of psychological suffering and soul searching. Howard W. Campbell III (played by Nick Nolte) takes on a non-combat mission that is not necessarily a suicide mission but is very arguably more frightening and is dangerous.
The best WWII movie ever is Come And See. Made in Belarus . If you don’t mind reading subtitles it is an awesome movie. It is on UA-cam as well.

Band of Brothers is incomparable. The Thin Red Line is remarkable. I enjoy the European films, even with subtitles for German, Norweigan, or Dutch. However I can't for films from Belgium. It's just too much reading subtitles in Belch
I found out recently that The Thin Red Line is a remake. The original in black and white is much better.

Montgomery made a big deal of seizing Antwerp when he should have bypassed the city and taken the Scheldt islands before the Germans could properly defend them.
Among other mistakes he made. The Ruhr for example.
Sole oldies are really good, 'Where Eagles Dare' with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, the twists at the end and the action stands up well. But my fav WW2 movie and perhaps my fav movie is Downfall, the story of the last few days of Hitler in the bunker, amazing performances

“The Longest Day”, “Bridge of the River Kwai”, “The Great Escape”, and “Tora, Tora, Tora”, respectively, are the four best World War II movies ever made.

Can't have Tora, Tora, Tora without including Midway. The Longest Day is one of my favorites. Honestly though, the two best WWII movies are the Clint Eastwood directed "Flags of our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima"

"Anthropoid" is an excellent film and sticks to the honest details of what happened during the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.

Personally, I view 'Fury' as being a World War 2 fantasy film, it's not historically accurate in any way. The best historical account of World War 2 is the ten-part documentary, 'Europa: The Last Battle'.

If you guys have not seen The Resistance Banker give it a watch. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Bombardment was pretty gritty and eye opening, another great WWII film that your shouldn't skip. The Forgotten Battle was probably one of those movies that is worth watching more than once. There is so much going on due to the multiple plot lines, you will be glued to your seat. Great selection of lesser known WWII films. You cant go wrong with any of them really. If you are like me try to watch them in historical order for greater immersion.
I would say that the Bombardment is one of the best WW2 movies that I have ever seen. Gut wrenching and very realistic, and true, the movie explores in depth the emotional extremes that civilians experienced during this period. Five Star!!

Saving Private Ryan? Not in a million years is that the best WW2 film
Operation Mincemeat was actually pretty good. Not action packed but got to see the strategic side to war
look for 'the man who never was' from 1950s same story but more depth

The Bombardment with Dutch singer Jantje Smit is a bad watch.
Unfortunately not on Netflix, the movie "Come and See" is a very DARK thriller loosely based on history. This cinematography and realism are extraordinary. This is WW2 in occupied Russia.

Castle Keep 1969 ,The Train 1964, The Memphis Bell 1990 and The Eagle has landed 1976 are excellent WW II war movies.
'Bombardment' is a film of a real incident, one that had real impact on how air attacks are carried out.
For the fictional version of this kind of thing, try '633 Squadron' or 'Mosquito Squadron'.
The Royal Air Force began to move toward precision strikes on targets that had strategic value. For example, attacking the heavy water production that the Nazis hoped would give them an atomic bomb.
This was expanded to small, fast aircraft attacking headquarters buildings, Gestapo torture and record centres, prisons where many resistance members were being held, to both free those who could escape, and to kill the ones who knew too much. An ugly business.
The attack on the Gestapo building in Copenhagen had several reasons: resistance and non-resistance people were being tortured there, the Gestapo kept their records of resisters there, it was a centre of Nazi control in Denmark, and an attack on it would be a precise attack, rather than bombing Copenhagen flat, and the Gestapo men were in the building at the chosen time of day.
During the attack, one aircraft was hit and crashed short of the target building, causing a fire and smoke to rise blocking the view (and attracting attention to the wrong location) of several following aircraft.
This resulted in aircraft bombing the fire, which destroyed much of a large school, and killed many children, their teachers and the nuns who ran the place. Some survived in the underground cellar shelters, but many died.
When this old man was in the RAF, and we deployed to Tirstrup airfield in Denmark, we held a parade and donated to the relief of survivors, and laid a wreath at the memorial, which we did every time we were in Denmark. We all knew the story, and a great deal of effort has gone into avoiding such incidents since.
A crazy thing about the war movie Narvik was that it was set to play in cinemas in Norway 25th of December 2021, but theen it got delayed due to covid, but then when it was supposed to play in the spring of 2022 it got delayed AGAIN due to the invasion of Ukraine, and then it was finally released in cinemas 25th of December 2022, a whole YEAR after its intended release date.
Heartily agree with your choice of "The Forgotten Battle". Anyone who hasn't seen it should do so right away.
And as user 111oooo mentions below, it was mostly Canadian troops assaulting the Germans. This battle allowed the vital port of Rotterdam to be taken.
It is probably not on Netflix, but how can any list of excellent World War Ii movies not include “12 o’clock high?” It features excellent acting and an accurate outline of the tragedy of so many losses by the eighth Air Force during 1942 and 1943. Not only that, but it’s probably the only war movie that features some really excellent music.
And “They Were Expendable” is another excellent war movie that no one mentioned.
I have seen the two Dutch moves featured here and they are excellent. A remark regarding the Resistance Banker, try to see the version with the subtitles, not the dubbed one. I don't know which one Netflix features but movies in original langues with subtitles are always better in my opinion. I am looking forward to see the Norwegian and Danish movies. WWII movies have improved so much over the years.

How do you not include Memphis Belle, The Enemy Below, Heaven Knows Mr. Allison, PT 109, The Great Escape and hundreds more? To say Saving Private Ryan was the best is a tad presumptuous. The Longest Day, a Bridge Too Far, Bridge Over the River Kwai , etc etc etc...
The Forgotten Battle - the clearing of the Scheldt, so that Allied merchant ships could dock in the huge port of Antwerp - is mentioned in the Academy Award winning documentary film The True Glory, and UA-cam has the excellent National Archives restored copy of that to view. Besides the Canadians, there were Norwegian troops involved, which is even more overlooked.
My fathers group was assigned to relieve Canadians who suffered heavy losses of Battle of Scheldt estuary. He helped remove mines, called it a hell hole.

The vack story to the Bombardment is the Dutch Resistance asked the RAF to bomb the Gestapo Headquarters, which unfortunately was located in the Shell building beside the school To their ongoing credit the Danes never blamed the RAF for what happened

One of my favourites is Cross of Iron an oldie but goldie superb cast at the top of their game, showing warfare in the Eastern front at its brutal reality from the German point of view....

Missing Unknown Soldier (2017 version), all time top 3 war movie for me.

Max Manus, The Twelth Man, Dunkirk, Allied, Land of Mine etc all very good .
My problem with Dunkirk was that no background information was given about why the British Expeditionary Force needed to be evacuated. If you didn’t know the history, it would have been very confusing.
Battle of Midway was a good Popcorn adventure . There wasn't too much stretching of the Truth and good Camera / CGI work

I rarely watch a foreign-made movie, thank god for the close caption, my thoughts on Blood and Gold, which you can watch other than NetFlix is a mix of a Dolph Lundgren look alike and the Good, Bad, and Ugly theme music, there's so much action you almost forget that your reading.

Das Boot from early 1990s (German) is an epic WWII movie about submarine warfare.
Come and See from 1985 (Soviet) deals with psycology of civilians what the great war had made them into..
My personal top 5 World War Two films:
-1: A midnight clear (1992) / Battle of the Ardennes seen as a psychological battle of the soldiers in a Belgian Chateau.
-2: The Young Lions (1958) / Marlon Brando and Dean Martin (🪖) play a German and an American officer who fight towards each other.
-3: Breakthrough / (1979) Richard Burton returns as German Sergeant Steiner and will fight his last battle in 1944 Normandy.
-4: Escape to Athena (1979) / War adventure on a Greek sun-drenched island With an all star cast including Telly Savalas and Roger Moore.
-5: Codename Emerald (1985) / War espionage story set just before D-Day. The Gestapo has captured an American who has information about the overrun operation.

Narvik and The Forgotten Battle are both fantastic films and really worth a watch.
Three older WWII films at the top of my list: The Victors, Twelve O'Clock High; The War Lover; all classics of high quality.
This is a great list of some very good movies on WW II. I, being a combat veteran, personally like "The Bridge over the River Kwai" and " A Bridge to Far" they both have the drama the conditions the soldiers lived in, the leadership, and In the Bridge over the Kwai, the marching song that will forever be linked to the movie.

One of the best war films I have seen is a little known Soviet “In war as in war”. The french translation catches it better though: A la guerre comme a la guerre. A compelling story of a crew of a Russian howitzer with beautifully portrayed characters.
I know a lot about World War II and there’s especially a movie I think that covers the entire movie about the Bismarck, and how it made its tragic end

Is the Last Battle on netflix, probably an old movie now but would love to see this one day as it depicts the strangest battle of WW2 and such a great novel read too.
I’ve seen most of these, but not the nummer one. So I will now. But to all of you that are not from the Netherlands, try Riphagen. A dutch film, chilling and brutally honest. And offcourse the banker. Dutch WWII films are worth the watch (remember Soldier of Orange and Black Book). Go and see them all.
Black Book is superb, hardly ever gets a mention.
