    What is IL-2 Flying Circus?
From the team that brought you Rise of Flight: The First Great Air War comes a new, re-imagined Great War combat flight-simulator as part of the IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles series. Fly some of WWI’s greatest aircraft in thrilling air to air combat high above the trenches of No Man’s Land. In planes made largely of canvas and wood, dogfight to the death against cunning enemies and see if you have what it takes to become an ACE! Experience what is was like to be an early aviation pioneer and test the tactics and machines that would forever change warfare by bringing it to the skies for the first time. Discover the bravery and courage it took to do battle with no parachute and no radio to call for help! Are you the next Guynemer, Ball, Bishop or von Richtofen?

Recovered Diary of German Mechanic Name: Unknown
I don't know who this man is but he sure showed those tommies today! He proved his skill today by downing 6 enemy aircraft on his transfer to lachelle. After his wingman confirmed the kill Baron Manfred Von Richthofen himself ordered me to give this pilots aircraft the name of "Witwenmacher". The Widowmaker. A fitting name to be sure. For now I'll have to find some fabrics to repair the bullet holes as soon as our supply trucks arrive.

Gefundenes Tagebuch eines deutschen Mechanikers. Name: Unbekannt

The DR.1 and the Camel both had similar flight characteristics in banking maneuvers. Banking right, the aircraft would nose down and banking left the aircraft would nose upward. As mentioned, this was due to the gyroscopic effects of the clockwise (as views from the pilots perspective) spinning engine.

There's a lesser known WWI sim called Wings Over Flander's Fields you should check out. It's a standalone total conversion mod for the old Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3. It's main draw is incredibly realistic historical campaigns (historically accurate weather, artillery activity, and air patrols) and some of the best AI I've seen in any combat flight sim.

That thing you were saying with the right vs left hand turns is correct. Reason being it's torque just like on any inline or radial, but it's the entire engine spinning and creating momentum. It's essentially just torque with extra weight and force.

Excellent first outing in the Dr.1! Thanks for doing these FC campaign vids, I'm always hungry for WWI aviation action. If you haven't already, you (and all interested) could learn a lot about the Dr.1 by watching Chill31000 videos starring his beautiful DR.1 replica (almost qualifies as a reproduction) with Le Rhone 9J rotary engine (Germans copied it to create the Dr.1's engine, the Oberursel Ur.II), and by reading the thread he started on the IL2 Sturmovik forum entitled "Fokker Dr.I Discussion". He says that, unlike the RoF Dr.1, the FC Dr.1 handles like a real one in most respects. Watching Chill's videos is a delight. He is clearly a highly skilled and experienced pilot, and he shows you stuff that you have probably never seen before in videos of WWI aircraft. I can't believe his vids have so few likes; they are amazing.

That's one of the difficult things to get used to with 'accurate' WW1 era air combat. As fragile as the aircraft were, because their construction was mostly canvas stretched over a wooden frames, and your guns fired rifle-caliber ammo... unless you hit the engine, pilot or a control rod/cable, the rounds will pass straight through causing very little damage.
It's possible to empty your guns completely into an enemy plane and do nothing but inconvenience it.

The DR-1 has really high lift and because of the torque of the radial engine to the right, so a right turn is best. Heavy firepower and great turning radius makes this aircraft a lot of fun. This game is the carry on to Rise of Flight. Both ROF and Flying Circus is made by the same folks. Remember lead your target and just because they are trailing black smoke does not mean they are shot down make sure of your kills.

Good show! And it's true that the rotary engine will affect your turning in the DR1. The design of a rotary engine results in the crankcase itself being what spins around a fixed crankshaft instead of what is considered normal nowadays with a rotating crankshaft and a fixed crankcase. All that spinning mass causes extreme amounts of torque and can actually flip your aircraft if not handled properly. Balance is key in right turns so dont bank into it too hard on landing and let the engine rotation help you bank the aircraft. If you bank like you normally would you're gonna wind up landing on your head and that is not advised as the human spinal cord cant support that kind of load.

    • @Wolfpack345

The Germans provided the colloquial name for "anti aircraft fire". 'Flak' comes from FLeugzeug Abwehr Kanonen.

To answer your question about the German name for AA: It is usually called "Flak" which is the acronym for the composite word "Flugabwehrkanone" (basically meaning anti aircraft cannon). I don't know though, whether the soldiers had some kind of generally used nickname for it.

    • @Wolfpack345
      @Wolfpack345  4 роки тому

Yeah I suppose I mis-asked the question. I knew they called it FLAK I just didn't know if they had a nickname for it like 'Archie' or 'Ack Ack'.

These games seem to always forget that the pilot should die if you shoot a ton of bullets at the tail, eventually one is going to hit the guy in the back.

The fact the DR.1 turns better to the right is historically correct.
The DR.1 is famous because of the Red Baron but the truth is its not that great a fighter. It was difficult to fly (and would often kill novices), A poor turner especially to the left (a weakness quickly picked up by Allied pilots) and it was slow especially against the SPADs and Nieuports it faced. Which is why it didn't stay in service very long. Even the Red Baron didn't like or use the DR.1 all that much and championed the development of the D.VII as its repalcement.
