We used to have school house rock and really good Sesame Street episodes in the 80s when I was a kid. I could read and understand addition and subtraction before I started kindergarten thanks to these shows. Music is incredible for memory retention.
@swaffy-topic5690 OMG! Thank you, you made me seriously LOL I truly laughed for a solid minute at your reaction to his words. Weird Al is his own kind of man. Not only a genius but a comedian as well. Unless Al makes a mockery of you, then you have NOT made it. Such as that slam about Prince. See, Al gets permission. Well, mostly. He asked the performer Prince and Prince told him no, so the songs Al made about Prince's music will never see the light of day. However, he will forever make a dig at Prince and his people for it. A light fun-hearted jab, just to remind Prince's people just how much more famous he could have been if Prince had agreed to let Al do his songs. It's been a well-known thing among performers. You have not been considered to making it massive until Al mocks you. Because, Weird Al is the Goat of parodies. Now and Forever!
Weird Al did a parody of Lose Yourself, but Eminem wouldn't sign off on the video portion. In retaliation Weird Al made a fake Eminem interview and took shots at him the whole time. I don't think Eminem ever responded. LOL
This song, while giving you grammar lessons, is simultaneously making fun of grammar Nazis and the people they target. On top of that, he provides you a version of the song you can enjoy without the questionable lyrics and video of the original. Al and his band recreate all the music themselves, there are no samples. The more familiar you are with the original, the more this will impress you. Even if you don't know the original song, this parody is fun, which is another aspect of the way Al creates his music. He avoids direct references to the original song or artist, with a couple of exceptions (Perform this Way is a parody of Lady Gaga's Born this way, for example). And about the cunning linguist joke, cunning means clever, a linguist is someone who studies words. Look this up on Google for the (sexual) joke.
Thanks Mustang Debbie, for the request. I love this song better than the original. Nice car, by the way. Oh, wait! I've seen you commenting on another channel before, hadn't I. Funny, it's like we all go around the same circles of reactors.
Weird Al has beef with Prince. Though it was never hateful it was a point of contention between the two. That's why he was mentioned in the song. Al always gets permission to parody his songs from the original artist but Prince was the only one to ever refuse to. To give you an idea of how ridiculous it is to refuse Weird Al, Michael Jackson, Madonna, James Brown, Kurt Cobain, Don McLean, Chamillionaire, Green Day, Lady Gaga and Hot Chili Peppers have ALL given permission to him before he made parodies of their songs. He is the G.O.A.T.
Also a reference to an off color word. Weird Al is family friendly but does enjoy the occasional double entendre which sails over the heads of the young ones.
Other artists have rejected parodies in the past (Michael Jackson rejected "Snack All Night", a parody of "Black or White"), but Prince is the only one who was a royal asshole about it. He even had his lawyers tell Al that he wasn't allowed to look at Prince when they were scheduled to be at the same awards ceremony. Ever since then, Al has called Prince out on every album he's released. I'm not sure if he's discontinued the practice since Prince's death.
I think there were two in this song. One was "here's some notes" when it should be (and the lyric video shows as) "here are some notes". Another had to do with a split infinitive, I think in the crowbar sentence. Were those the only ones?
cunning linguist is a pun... very punny. The thing about Prince is an in joke fans would follow, as Prince would never allow him to parody one of his songs. Prince used that symbol in place of his name in the 1990s due to some kind of intellectual property dispute with a former record label.
Al NEVER CURSES. NEVER. He says Holy Cow. He's very sweet and nice. VERY VERY CLEVER He's also highly educated. ARCHITECTURE from Poly Tech Enrolled at 16. Graduated at 19. You should read about him.
Cunning means quite smart. A linquist is someone who is an expert in a language. By the way, it's also a pun, or play on words. The pun is a reference to performing oral on a woman.
You're complaining at the start about Weird Al not being able to spell. Thats the whole idea of the video he's pointing out word crimes lol. Over your head apparently.
Ok you get a pass. But ya dude, this is a generation of old folks listening to young folks talk smack and WE know you are talking smack cuz your linguistics are primordial.
This song is pure genius. If schools taught like this we'd have smarter kids and adults in the future.
We used to have school house rock and really good Sesame Street episodes in the 80s when I was a kid. I could read and understand addition and subtraction before I started kindergarten thanks to these shows. Music is incredible for memory retention.
It "Cunning Linguist"
A linguist is someone who is skilled in languages.
Thank you! ( I'm happy someone actually knows)
I almost died laughing when he asked, 'What's a ... cunning linguist?'
Someone who is very good with their tongue.
@Fuck Google Cunning lingust is a play on cunnilinguist, which is use of the tongue in another way...
...cunnilingist, rather.
He said "Cunning linguist",
cunnilingus is something else entirely.
@swaffy-topic5690

Weird Al is his own kind of man.
Not only a genius but a comedian as well.

This is one of my favorites
I applaud you for mentioning Cursive writing!
Weird Al is the King of all Music
Weird Al has beef with Prince. Though it was never hateful it was a point of contention between the two. That's why he was mentioned in the song. Al always gets permission to parody his songs from the original artist but Prince was the only one to ever refuse to. To give you an idea of how ridiculous it is to refuse Weird Al, Michael Jackson, Madonna, James Brown, Kurt Cobain, Don McLean, Chamillionaire, Green Day, Lady Gaga and Hot Chili Peppers have ALL given permission to him before he made parodies of their songs. Facts on that last part
He said cunning linguist. A linguist is a specialist in linguistics which is the branch of English that covers comma splices and grammar issues.
Also a reference to an off color word. Weird Al is family friendly but does enjoy the occasional double entendre which sails over the heads of the young ones.
I see the Slim Shady paper on your wall. You should do Weird Al’s song Couch Potato next. It’s a parody of Eminem’s Lose Yourself.
Great idea!
The reason he mentioned "Prince" is because he is the one and only musician who would not accept a parody.
In the context of the song it's actually something else. "Never write your name using numbers". Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol.
@@Persun_McPersonson Which number does it symbolize?
I think it's more a reference to Prince's many song titles that use numbers, like 'I Would Die 4 U', 'Nothing Compares 2 U', 'Live 4 Love', etc.
@@BruceBanner It was called "Love Symbol #2" by fans.
Love your Al reactions, Swaffy!
There was one "word crime" that he did on purpose and hardly anyone catches it.
Prince also made a habit of using numbers to replace letters in his song titles and album lyrics.
Yeah, he spelled conjugate correctly but misspelled people. it's called sarcasm. He's making fun of people who misspell words on the internet.
Al NEVER CURSES. NEVER. He says Holy Cow. He's very sweet and nice. VERY VERY CLEVER He's also highly educated. ARCHITECTURE from Poly Tech Enrolled at 16. Graduated at 19. You should read about him.
Weird Al also writes children's books.
A cafe owner here in Austin made a FaceBook post offereing free espressos for life after releasing this, with that screenshot.
Well the video was a parody of "Blurred Lines" which had its own controversy attached to it.
You should check out the Weird Al's song Germs and the song Everything you know is wrong.
Cunning linguist, lol!
Everyone but me: (making genius comments)
Me: *jamming to the intro music*
Some peeple are morans.
While this video does have an educational component to it, it's meant to parody Grammar Nazis on the internet.
He who tires of Weird Al is tired of live!
A cunning linguist is a skilled linguist....someone who knows language. He was trying to point out how awful people write these days.
Ohh that makes sense
He said cunning linguist
Ohhh lol thx
Cunning means quite smart. A linquist is someone who is an expert in a language.
By the way, it's also a pun, or play on words. The pun is a reference to performing oral on a woman.
Oral sex on a woman.
Another sexual joke would be dangling participle. Also, Al Yankovic has a big dictionary.
Check out sabaton. Rock band that all of their stuff is about history.
SORRY!! YOU"RE VERY SWEET VERY YOUNG. Al is trying to teach you. He's smart as hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're complaining at the start about Weird Al not being able to spell. Thats the whole idea of the video he's pointing out word crimes lol. Over your head apparently.
I mean, HE USES QUOTATION MARKS FOR EMPHASIS IN HIS NAME
This was a parody of the song Blurred Lines.
Shhh, we don't mention that date rape drug song around these parts
Oof 😬😬
Please react to Home Free “End of the Road “ a cappella cover!
Ok you get a pass. But ya dude, this is a generation of old folks listening to young folks talk smack and WE know you are talking smack cuz your linguistics are primordial.
Grab a dictionary, bro
I think you look a bit like Will Smith back when he was doing Fresh Prince.
This song
