- Did you have Barbie's first dream house? I know I didn't when I was little. But now that I'm old I was able to find a really nice example of one and Kewpie 83 and I will show you around it. Enjoy!

The reason why I like the vintage barbie's is because they were more glamorous. Like the dream houses today are way to pink and childlike. This one is more realistic.
They should have a different color pallets instead of just pink, but it's a toy intended for children(so it's "childish")
Back when Barbie was not only pink.

Mattel released a reproduction house, so maybe they will release the Fashion Shop and the College, and others if everyone would write to them or send them an email requesting reproductions? At least you’d be getting them new, and not missing items?
raye xo I think it’s because little kids don’t notice things like that as much as adult collectors, or they don’t care as much. The “Pink Boxes” are designed more for kid play, so Mattel gears towards kids. You can always write Mattel and make suggestions. They like to hear from their customers!! They have been very accommodating every time I’ve contacted them. Happy Collecting!! 🙂

I had this one! I remember when I woke up Christmas morning to find it under the tree along with Barbie clothes , I was so happy! Talk about a blast from the past....wow
I had one of these growing up. I was born in 61. I played with it until my mid teens and loved loved loved this dollhouse. Because it folded up, and was light enough to carry, I could set It up wherever I wanted to. And I remember sitting on the porch with It. It was big enough to even make my own kitchenette and put it over to the side.

As a child of the sixties, this brought me down memory lane. I did have a Barbie Doll house too, but a later version. I still collect dolls today too.

Yes, the husband of the owner didn't know why there were 3. He said it was her childhood playset. So she really does like Ken, I'd prefer different poses.

What's fun about this house is that it can be used as inspiration to make cardboard/chipboard furniture and houses for Barbie that can be customized. I just got a 1973 Barbie Country Home in near mint condition today! So excited to have it. Really beautiful house. Not as old as this one, but still, it's 46 years old. I love the 70s colorful graphics.

I asked for this for Christmas and my parents got it for me. They were up until 3 am Christmas Eve putting together all of the chipboard furniture. They were really tired come Christmas Day since we got up so early (6:30 am) on Christmas morning. I loved it and played with it for years until it fell apart.

I am totally blind, I am 27 years old, and I just started collecting toys again as an adult. I thank you so much for your details of the dolls and houses. They really help someone like me be able to enjoy the fun! I hope one day you might do a review of the Barbie Fold & Fun House Circa 1992 if you can find it, and/or Barbie 2-Story House 2017. I don't have either of those playsets. We did have something similar to the 2 story one but it wasn't 2 stories. Maybe that is on my daughter's channel, Kewpie83. So what types of toys are you collecting?
barbee0913 I have some new Polly Pocket sets like the Polly Pocket Micro House and Mini Middle School and I really want some of the older Polly Pockets from the 90s. Never got a chance to play with those growing up. I’ve also started collecting Our Generation Lori 6in dolls and I have the RV Glamper trailer as well as car with real FM radio that hitches onto that for the dolls. I bought the Barbie 2-Story House and a Barbie doll with a scooter recently. The Barbie doll and scooter just arrived, still waiting on the house. From what I’ve been reading the house is very flimsy so I might have to exchange it for the Malibu house, 2019. I was concerned about height differences between the 2-story and the Malibu houses because I keep 90% of my dolls/toys in my living room. My boyfriend and I live in a pretty small one bedroom apartment and I’m running out of room despite the fact that I don’t have many toys right now LOL,but according to the video service I use for the blind that helps describe whatever we can’t see they aren’t that different size wise... So we’ll see how it goes. I have to return the scooter though because when I took it out of the box it immediately broke. I hope they will let me keep the Barbie doll because I like her a lot. Unlike when I was a kid in the 90s and early 2000’s Barbie has come a long way. I like that she now has some weight to her. She looks healthier. I want to do a couple UA-cam videos on some of my toys/dolls but I don’t know how much enjoyment people will get in case I can’t aim the camera correctly.

I was too young to get it as a child. But it is nice to have one. It's getting harder to find the cardboard playsets at doll shows.

I also had the Barbie Campus, but sold it to a collector who really wanted it. I'm sorry I sold it now. My Dad stayed up late on Christmas Eves to put it and the Dream House together for Christmas morning for me.
Barb- JM Maybe you can find another one someday? Mattel should make reproductions of all the cardboard buildings.
I have some memories of playing with this house at a neighbors house when I was very little, like 4 or so. I remember not liking the cardboard. I did like the plastic houses as they came out, but never got one. Wanted one badly though.
I think, Mattel was wrong when they represent this Dream House. I think, the arrangement of the furnitures are not in the right place. Common sense, the bedroom is probably on the right side with windows, bookshelf and pennants. And the living room is on the left side with frames and carpet. Put the high-fi on the wall with frames, then put the center table and sofa facing the high-fi. The sofa will serve as divider on living room and bedroom. Then, put the bed beside the windows and the blue single sofa and ottoman is beside the bookshelf. That's it! I hope you can try this on another video. Thanks in advance. 😊😊😊

I recognized the LP artists! Good thing she doesn't eat because there's no table or kitchen. I've seen them where real furniture was subbed and they put the bed by the books and a divider and then the stereo under the windows and the sofa and chair in the middle, and under the pictures on the wall they put a table (still no kitchen)
When I had mine oh so many years ago (I was born in 61), I made a little kitchenette and they ate with little TV trays sitting on the couch.

I didn't know the clips were different colors.
My mother swears she caught a cold assembling the Dream House furniture in our garage so it could be placed under the tree Christmas morning.

Aw! I got one in a lot a while back with some 80s playsets, and I've been trying to sell it. It's got like all the small pieces but missing/has broken furniture. :/ Yours is superb!
Cool, now you just have to sell off the parts that are good. I looked on ebay and couldn't believe what some people were selling one little cardboard record for.

Just discovered your videos and loving every minute! I was 8 in 1961 and wanted nothing more than a Barbie Dream House. None of my friends had one, because I guess it was very expensive for its time. How wonderful it was in all its midcentury detail! And no awful girlie pink. 🙂👍🏻

Me too. I've seen comments of people buying them but most are just keeping the cellophane on them. Not much fun in that!
It's pretty spot-on with the original EXCEPT they changed all the records! No more Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Four Preps, etc. If it were not for that, I'd say it's a perfect repro. Plus, with the original, we did not get a Barbie doll or any outfits with the house.

It was a sheath that someone made at a Ken Convention and sold. I loved the sheath's, I remember my original Barbie had maybe 5 of them, all different fabric.
I just dug out my Barbie Dream House from 1961 and your example is in better condition than mine. Apparently, I was hard on the legs of the furniture, too, because I have tape (ackkk!) on those. I do have the pillows and records. Have you looked in the push-up drawer at the bottom of the closet? Or under it? Another hiding place in the old Dream House is above the back wall (above the bookcase, closet, etc.) The pink cardboard folds back from the center line and there is space in there to hide little items. Maybe the records, etc. are in there if you are lucky.
Good thinking. I haven't seen mine in 45 ish years. The only thing I realized was they didn't seem to know the drawers "opened".
That house is soooo wonderful. Please can you tell me its exact measurement folded and infolded. I would like to attemp creating simular house.
Oooh, tall order. I will have to see if I can do that. I bet someone on the facebook group, vintage barbie doll collectors 1959-1972, might have done that already and have the measurements.

did the furniture originally come already set up? or did it come flat and you had to assemble it?
You assembled it. It came flat.
My dad and I assembled my Barbie House...We put the back wall on backwards...so...the vanity doesn't have a 'mirror'...I guess it could be reassembled...but it's a memory that I grew used to. Not many dads helped with Barbie construction back then, I'd guess. I never really played with my Barbie. It disappeared somewhere down the line. But the dollhouse has moved with me through the years. I took it to my classroom several times to share with my elementary-aged students. They pretty much were entranced by it. No plastic (save the hangers)...just cardboard. They loved the pillows and records... Anyway...would love to know my BDH's value. It's in excellent condition...Nothing missing. ?? Thanks!

I have really enjoyed the reproduction. I did realize that the records are not like the original ones. I guess maybe because of the copy right issues. The chipboard seems better than the vintage. If you would like copies of the cushions I'd be happy to copy them and the pendants.

At the right place at the right time. I still kick myself over not being able to pick up the dress shop, also cardboard that I saw at a show once. What was I thinking? Maybe I was thinking about the week's groceries.
Perhaps a bit of guilt sets in over spending money on dolls and related stuff sometimes? I know it does with me! It's a lovely hobby though.

There are no 1961 dreamhouses still available from new toy retailers -- they are "collectible" items you would find from a doll dealer or private party.

How much did you pay for it
I bought it an outside flea market. But the original owner was there, and I could see, touch and smell it to see it was in good shape. So I paid a bit more, I think 75.00 but at that time I didn't know Mattel was going to make a reproduction of it. But it was the only thing I was buying that day and I like it a lot.

Just stumbled upon an original dream house myself in a stroke luck, too! It’s in great condition but, among several other accessories, is without a portrait of Ken. You have three? Are you perhaps looking to sell one?
The dreamhouse is on a high shelf, let me get it down and make sure the portraits are still in there.

Yes, it is the original. I acquired it a few years before they decided to re-release it. The reproduction come with a reproduction Barbie also.

When my daughter dragged me into this venture, I was reluctant so the name stuck!

Based on my dorm room experiences, that would be a pretty luxurious dorm room. I think it's showing that she is living stylish even while going to college. Probably has well to do parents.
