  • A review of a vintage doll named Charmin Chatty. I just love her and show off some of the things she can say. Best present ever!

Charmin' Chatty [1963-64] came out in the Kennedy administration, and people were traveling the world via jet planes. Jackie Kennedy famously spoke French in France, and Spanish when the Kennedys were in South America and Mexico. The Charmin' Chatty outfit, "Let's Talk 'N Travel in Foreign Lands," was inspired by Mrs. Kennedy and the idea was that the child could learn a foreign language---or at least become aware that in foreign lands, children spoke different languages. With that "travel" outfit the child got a little foreign language dictionary too that showed how to pronounce the words. The American Airlines hat and bag were for the child to wear, as she was the stewardess on a trip across the ocean. All this is in the book "Chatty Cathy and her Talking Friends" by Schiffer Publishing.

My video's are more of an expression of how much I love dolls. Thanks so much for your history on the topic and reference to a book that I'm sure my subscribers and I would love to find. I love books on dolls.

I have both the blond and red head with all the records and all the outfits all original took me 5 yrs to collect have a couple of games and also the jigsaw just need to get one voice box fixed as sadly it doesn't work so very nice to see your love of these dolls and such a lovely demonstration of her phrases.

I'm still trying to get the birthday record and the games. I've seen them at a doll show but they were priced out of my league. Another doll show I went to had the game but it was just the board, it was missing the records and they were a bit pricy on that.

Absolutely my favorite doll. I hated “baby” dolls and most dolls in general. I was a huge stuffed animal fan but Charmin’ Chatty was my continual companion from 1963-1968, or so. I kept her for several decades.

I wish I could find some original clothing for her. I have a non-working one that I found cheap at a show. I'm hoping my husband will be able to fix her for me.

I wish I had an ebay card. Actually I didn't know there was one. Just ask questions, make sure she works. Sometimes their arms fade to a lighter color. That just seems to be one of the way it ages.

Yours is in great condition! Mine does work but is harder to understand. She has been redressed and I used American Girl glasses for her. You are so lucky!

I got lucky, saw her and my daughter was able to tell her dad to get it for me as a gift. One of my favorite gifts. I want my husband to learn how to fix them. He said maybe when he decides to retire. There are a couple of videos on how to fix them, he didn't think they looked too hard.

Nice review and interesting doll. I only know about Chatty Cathy dolls vaguely (I was born in the mid ‘80s). I used to have a mermaid doll that sang and went in the bath. And my brother had a talking ALF. My brother also had Teddy Ruxpin and Grubby and I had Mother Goose from the same company.

Oooh, maybe you can send her away so she will talk again. I was lucky she had been already repaired. Here is a site that fixes, don't know if they are still around, you'd have to check plus there is a you tube telling you how to repair her yourself. Not something I think I could do. talkingchattycathys.com/beauty-shop-repair/

I'd try an electronics engineer. Can't hurt. They usually charge 60 up front to look at it. And then the balance.

Oh Lor... This doll is as ugly as I remember. I'm sorry, but she gave me the creeps at aged 3 and she still does now!! I still had her when I was 7, we were moving, and I gave her to my cousin! When they moved 2 years later she was given to a little girl further down the street!
Thanks for showing me a memory from childhood x

I do too. Now I need the game and birthday records to become affordable so I can pick them up. Every doll show I go to, she has them the same price and won't go lower, geesh. Also I'd like a dress for her. Some day.

Greetings to you! I have so enjoyed this video and watched a few times over, and I found it among my searches for the Chatty Cathy type dolls. I bought a Charmin Chatty requiring a lot of work (even most hair missing on the back of her head) and getting carried away with the awe of them, so I admit I'm shopping and studying what I can find online to educate myself, and today I received an early Chatty Cathy doll with the fabric covered grill. I have a question...while I am still exploring the possibilities of fixing these low priced dolls myself, this doll I received today smells like it has been in a garage. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I am wondering how you might clean them with the idea of fixing them later as well (I do not want to ruin the mechanisms inside, rust them out, or destroy them in anyway). I have seen videos (really wonderful actually) on how to remove limbs by heat, but I am not sure I am ready to open up the bodies at this point or even twist the heads off yet... by same method. I am getting there, but still educating myself more. I have cleaned other dolls, but mostly the kind having fiber-filled bodies and not hard to totally clean up. Also, I have fixed loose limbs before. This doll needs washing and does look scruffy: dirty face, hair, and limbs. Also, I was warned that her teeth are loose, but I'm not sure but they are currently placed crookedly and visually can see it needs adjustment and not where it should be...per chance do you know how I might readjust this? I have been learning a lot about these dolls, need to work up the courage to fix, but right now want to clean what I can. Any advice? I think the biggest question I have is...how to keep water from getting inside the body but still getting it wonderfully clean. Should I put wads of plastic wrap at the seams or tape or ? Of course, I do not have plans of immersing it in water. Also, I do notice her eyebrows and freckles have turned a gray color, and I totally can repaint this myself, but would that still be considered authentic doll if I did so? How far can one go to repaint and still be authentically the same doll? Also, she came with these gold round rimmed glass/plastic?? eyeglasses! I think they are old and have weight to them...seem to be metal (but still looks great!). I am a do-it-yourself-er... Thanks so much in advance for any cleaning advice you might have. Thank you for your time. Thank you for everything, and your lovely and sweet videos. Love the ones I have seen thus far. God bless you in Jesus' Name.

Hello, if it were my Chatty Cathy, I would give her a sponge bath with washrag and plain old Dawn detergent. I wouldn't clean anything around her fabric grill. Mine has a fabric grill too. Don't submerge her in water, just wet the washcloth. If you are not ready to re-root her hair than you could gently wash her hair too. Just have a towel ready to dry her off so water doesn't go into the holes in her head. Some people use fabric softener on doll hair to make it comb through easier (I haven't tried that yet). We also buy dolly cleaner off of ebay to clean our dolls, it's called Dream Clean Xtra Doll Cleaner, I"ve had only one doll that didn't react so well to it and that was a Midge doll. As far as a smell inside of the doll, I would place her outside, let her sit in the sun. You can cover her parts with a towel so she doesn't fade. But I've found after a few days the smell has gotten better. I don't know how to adjust the teeth. There are a couple of Chatty Cathy Facebook groups that might be able to help you with that. As far as repainting, that's up to you. Some people are purists and feel that doing anything to a doll changes its value. Me, I don't care, if I can do it and she looks better, it's all good. If I can't fix her than I ask around for someone who has more skill than me. I don't collect to sell. I like to fix fixer uppers, it's fun to make them to look good again. My Chatty Cathy is mute, I'm not brave enough to open up her body to fix her talking mech. We have taken our Chatty's head off and my daughter re-rooted her hair for me. She is the only Chatty I have and it was so long ago that I don't remember if that part was hard anymore. I hope this helps a little. I find so many helpful people on the doll facebook pages.

Dear Barbee0913, I am so very, very, sorry it took so long to write to you, and actually, I have sat here a few times attempting to reply. My delay is because I wanted to write back with results on your advice, and I SO APPRECIATE THEM! THANK YOU! I have been looking at these cleaners online, and thank you for this information. Also, due to two times using a fabric softener on hair, I don't recommend it myself. Other people have had great success, but for me, I did not see good results. Your advice of just using a wash cloth (for the limbs) was awesome...however, I got the courage to take off the head!!! Using a blow dryer moving constantly around the neck (I initially wrapped the hair away with a cloth and a rubber band around her head), and about a minute later tried removing the head...and it was so easy and the neck did not break and nothing was harmed!!! So, I bent the limbs behind her and placed the body right on top of a larger bowl turned upside down in the sink, and I very carefully got the limbs cleaned and very carefully rinsed. This could be a very precarious situation, so I wouldn't recommend this in the sink thing to those who might be too aggressive...it can get wet in the wrong places very easily. But I got another Chatty Cathy doll having no sound and although it stated it was a #4 grill, I actually got a #3. A real bummer, but she is so cute. But I had nothing to loose I felt, so upon taking the head off to clean, I noticed a slightly open crack between her legs, and I thought now or never! So within no time I got her body cracked open!!! Then I got her voice box unseated from therein! Then I went back to restudying the things I found pertaining to tutorials, and I am so glad I am taking my time! I am in it! Little details are so important. So excited, and so glad I am taking this step-by-step! One thing, when you see it, actually see it up close and personal, what one sees online suddenly makes sense. This grill's complication is that this fragile speaker cone is attached to the voice box, which makes it extremely fragile to fix. However, I am now up for the challenge... granted I have had epic fails in my life (like the ugliest wrinkled curtain you would ever see in your lifetime or turning a Bible into a brick by trying to add art gilding to the paper edges--trying to remove it with a Dremel tool is not a fun experience. However, I have come along way since.), but I have also had epic successes! So, I am determined! GRIN. I am laughing thinking about all this. Finally, I want to say, I have watched some months back some videos about re-rooting doll hair, and I have to say...that from what I have seen, it is a lot of work, and I have seen there are various ways to do it. So, I am totally amazed when I hear what you said about your daughter doing this labor of love. Just wow. So cool. Wow. I would love to see your Chatty Cathy too if you ever show her, I will look for it. Thank you again for everything. Blessings to you in Jesus' Name.

Wow, so much good information.I will have to remember your instructions if I ever find another Chatty to work on. Here is the link that shows my Chatty that my daughter re-rooted for me. dollyconfessions.wordpress.com/?s=chatty+cathy

Your link you gave...just wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her hair is amazing! What a transformation! So beautiful! I could not help but stare for a while just admiring her. She is gorgeous! Pertaining to the #3 grill of the Chatty Cathy doll...I am hearing that some people have little success in fixing them. I have not given up yet, but it is so strange--it seems like it should work, but it does not. Perhaps it has something to do with the brake on it which determines the speed. It seems like the record just doesn't turn as it should. But I am having the time of my life. I hope you both are doing well, and I look forward toward more of your videos. God bless you in Jesus' Name.

ForestElk Deer something that might help get the stink off your doll is those packs that you might find I electronics packages to keep the moisture out during shipping. I think they are called cillica jell . They even pack this in some medicine/ pills too. Some good hardware stores or places that have electronic parts might have this.
Clean your cool thoroughly and, dry her well.
Get that Scilla jell it’s in little packets but, they will look like little balls. Leave it in the packets if that’s the way it comes.
Put dolly in a plastic bag or a container that you can tightly seal with the Scilla jell and, leave her in this for about two weeks or, until you are ready to work on her.
I have used this on doll dress patterns I brought from people on eBay to get rig of old cigarettes smell and, whatever else was on it.
These dolls have a belt in them just like the belt on a record player. These dry out and, stretch these need to be replaced for them to work.
There is a guy on eBay that fixes talking dolls.
I am looking for the instructions for ma Charmin Chatty’s Navy skirt. Can anyone help with this?
I got a red head a couple years ago and, want to dress her in original outfit.
Do not use faberic softener on doll hair. Ask places that sell wigs if they can recommend cleaners and, conditioner for doll hair. Take your doll with you for them to see the hair condition and, type.
10 percent benzoyl peroxide will cleanink and, some other stains off of vinyl doll bodies it also may take several times to do this but, use cation when using the pimple cream as it does stain faberic ( bleach stain). I saved my grand daughters Gotez doll that was tattooed from stem to stearn. What a job that was.
      Good luck girls.
