    Ive talked with respiratory therapists and they also recommended not using mineral or tap water because the ultrasonic humidifiers actually aerosolizes everything in the water including the minerals, chemicals, etc. Therefore, if one uses the tap/mineral water your animal is breathing in the aerosolized minerals very unnatural and unsafe.

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  4 роки тому +7

      Ah! I hadn’t even thought of that, very good point. Another good reason to stick with distilled or RO

      @@samarabevin hi Samara, yes, personally I think it is necessary. If you use regular tapwater, you will notice sediment buildup in the tubing as well as on the actually ultrasonic disc itself which will eventually cause problems. Not to mentioned the aerosolization issue mentioned above. I would stick with distilled or RO if you can!

    Awesome and informative video as always.I was having trouble maintaining humidity in my JCP enclosure despite putting more damp sphagnum moss in but I did notice since I put a larger water dish in it has definitely helped. As always though, misting seems to be the most reliable way to bump it up when I need to!

    Thank you!! My heat lamp for my ball python's enclosure wipes out humidity to the point spraying it barely helps. So, I bought a humidifier before I watched this, and some plastic tubing, stupid me didn't think of fittings or to use silicone to seal around the fittings. It's got such an awkward nozzle on the top of the humidifier. The reptile brands can be super overrated sometimes, so I'm glad someone else had a similar idea.

    I don't have an animal that needs high humidity yet but this is still a super awesome video that makes me a lot less nervous about getting an animal that would need high humidity. I also liked your comment about misting which I do lightly every week or two with my uromastyx and leopard geckos. Its not required at all with these species but I find it does help their sheds quite a bit.

      In central Texas, during the cooler months, the ambient RH in my house will routinely be in the 20s. Annoying for humans. Not good for a Leo. My hand misting was not cutting it. Plus his enclosure is 36W x 18D so lots of top area for evaporation. I got a couple of hand towels, soaked them, wrung them out and place them on the top screen (while leaving some uncovered area) and the RH went from upper 20s to upper 30s. I re-wet a couple of times a week until we're out of the cold temps.

    Good video; You've hit my trifecta: 1. Stickin' it to the man with diy, 2. Clear explanation, 3. Staying on point and not making video pointlessly long with unnecessary babble.

  • @greyecologyst4694
    @greyecologyst4694 2 роки тому

    I know this is old but these diy vids are always relevant. The most annoying thing with these is that the hole the mist comes out of is never round so you can't get a proper seal. Walgreens no longer sells the one they made that had an oval opening close enough to a circle that you could use ptfe tape to create that seal and rig pvc fittings to it solving the hose issue. However, with the availability of 3D printers someone should be able to commission a 3D printed adapter that plugs into the humidifier on one end and slip fits into some pvc on the other end. If either of my humidifiers die in the future my friend that has a 3D printer already said hed do it for me.

    Another way that works is using a hole saw on the top of the humidifier. Then get weather stripping tape and wrap the end of the tube and shove through the hole. Weather stripping seals it.

    Thus far I have been using my fogger attacked to a humidity controller. It only pumps a tiny bit of fog, just enough to raise the humidity if it starts to drop below my low point threshold. I use a misting system a cycle. It goes off just as night hits to drop the temperature a bit and spike the humidity for night.
    I will add as well, that my gecko is never at the bottom of the terrarium where the fog actually rolls. The deep heat projector I have basically evaporates it pretty quick. Would you suggest not even using it in this sort of scenario?

    Very cool video and good creativity and gadgetry skills. But can we not claim this is about saving money? It indicates a misunderstanding of time value, cost and money. By all means, build your fogger if you enjoy it. But you are spending more money to do it. Even if you subtract your time, the savings is minimal.
    Honeywell Humidifier = $34.99
    Tube of Bathroom Caulk = $4
    Caulk Gun = $5
    Tubing and fittings = $8
    1.5 hours of your time at minimum wage of Target = $22
    TOTAL = $73.99
    REPTI ZOO Reptile Automatic Fogger with Humidity Gauge, Timer and On/Off based on humidity level = $69.99
    By the way, still appreciate the channel and tips on how to build and take care of your reptiles or amphibians.

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! That is generally what tell people, i.e. "DIY is not necessarily going to save you money, you should only tackle DIY projects if you really enjoy building."
      However, I think it really depends on the individual situation. If someone has more money than time (like you or me, for example) they are probably happy to spend the extra $20-30 dollars on the store-bought item. However, if you are someone who has more time than money (like a teenager for example), they would certainly appreciate spending less money and could care less if they spend an entire day building something haha! That's just my opinion.
      Also, something to note- The REPTIZOO Fogger is $104.95 in Canada, when you had 15% sales tax (i.e. the tax rate in most of the provinces) that is about $120 ($93 USD). So quite a significant saving if you are someone short on cash.

      How far does your fog have to climb because this makes no sense to me? Also this doesn’t work with just any humidifier because I tried everything with the two I bought new and the most recent one lasted a day. Despite me keeping it clean and checking on it as often as one would a new born baby, I’ve had to send back both. I had one already so it’s actually 3 dead now. I can’t just be getting lemon humidifiers and I have to spray my enclosure so often that it wouldn’t be possible if I wasn’t quarantined. I would order that Honeywell right now if I thought it was likely to work because I’m about to go buy a reptifogger, smash it off my head and jump off a bridge holding the pieces when it fails on me in a week
