In the first season: Thorfinn went into a negative arc for the entire season, until at the end: Canute ended his suffering. In season two: Canute went into a negative arc for the entire season, until at the end: Thorfinn ended his suffering.
well , theres a difference between his statments too, canute its a king an he has much responsabilities, the conversation with thorfinn just make him see another way, but we need to know that we are talking about the nordic world, violence was not a bad thing and canute knows
I already read the manga, and it's cool that you are one of the few people who really understand that thorfinn is learning too, like, he can make a decision but then realize that maybe it was a bad one , because he's still growing ,he doesn't know All the answers, now And the next season he gotta find out if that no violence rule is gonna work whenever he has to face other people.
Yeah I don’t know why so many anime watchers think when a character says something it’s permanent. Probably because the lack of nuance in a lot of anime nowadays conditions that thinking.
I feel like he came into this season a blank slate and for most part so did us, the viewers. From then we learned with him and will continue to grow with him. After his dialogue with canute you can tell this series isn't very black and white at all. truly great story telling
Canute thought Thorfinn came to see him for a diplomacy, with a scheme in his mind. But Thorfinn just came to see him for a begging, politely. Canute never thought anyone would ask him so frankly, like an old good friend. At this moment, Canute realizes that Thorfinn is a true friend of him.
I'm happy to announce that this is the standard for VINLAND SAGA. The script is from this level UP! We will have fights, YES! Drama terms, YES! We will have romance, YES! The first season had a lot of action, the second season had a lot of drama, the synthesis of these extremes is what we will continue to see!
This whole thing about the king's head influencing Canute, for me, represents a way of thinking inherited from his father, whenever the head appears it means that he is reasoning according to the image of a great leader inherited from his father, and created by himself Canute. The moment Thorfinn is shown "inside Canute's head" (2:54), is when, for me, the influence of Thorfinn's words penetrated Canute's core, and began to influence him more than "that head ". Strong men can only be swayed by strong words indeed.
His father even said, he used to think like Canute when he was young, but the weight of the crown changed him and made him 'realize' he needed more control and power to get what he wants. Canute headed down the same path, the path of a cursed crown. But Thorfinn eased that curse.
What I love about this season is the simultaneous and inconceivable oneness and duality how two opposites(duality) form a whole(oneness) yinyang etc. In the beginning of season one, Thorfinn as a child of meager upbringing, was all about war even before his dad Thors was killed. He was enamored with war, he would practice as a child with his wooden sword and would glorify his dad for his strength, warring acumen, and warrior legend etc even though Thors himself was now a man of peace and was now very anti war. Thors would try to guide his war hungry son Thorfinn away from war with peace by imparting on him the ethos they have no enemies. Ironically, Thors serving as a symbol of peace, would be slain and serve to further Thorfinn on a path consumed by war until he evolved and eventually embodied his father’s ethos of peace and having no enemies. So in essence Thorfinn’s evolution is from War to Peace. Canute is the opposite evolution. As a young prince Canute was meek, timid and often coddled by his bodyguard Ragnar who described Canute as a gentle soul who dislikes needless bloodshed. Under the tutelage of a priest, Canute followed Christianity which preached peace and other themes running antithetical to war. Canute loathed his father King Sweyn who was obsessed with war and power. Because of Canute’s peace keeping Christian ideology, he was deemed too weak and devoid of the kingly constitution needed for his title and planned Canute's death. This peace keeping ironically is what led to Ragnar’s death which emboldened Canute to pursue war, conquering killing of his father, brother and subjects who rebelled against the crown so he can achieve peace. Canute's evolution is from peace to war. Upon their encounter you can see how Thorfinn and Canute are opposites both in class(commoner(thorfinn)/royalty(canute), development(war to peace(thorfinn)/peace to war(canute)) and ideology(no enemies(universal ethos) spread peace to get paradise(thorfinn)/War with his enemies(personal ethos) and God to get paradise). When these two opposites meet(the scene when thorfinns are standing opposite each other where thorfinn has the sun like glow on him and canute is in dark represents light and dark duality) they become one as Thorfinn and Canute adopt each other’s ethos and work together and even end up being enamored with each other. Duality becomes Oneness. This shows war can lead to peace which means peace can also lead to war! What this shows is both of their ethos are flawed. Canute thinks warring will bring about peace, but this peace will eventually create wars. Thorfinn thinks spreading peace will create paradise but peace turns into war which turns into peace and so on and so forth ad infinitum. This is God's logic and it cannot be defied because he wants it this way. So long as there is free will there will always be agreement and disagreement which is the infancy of peace and war respectively. THIS SEASON IS INFINITELY BETTER THAN THE FIRST THEMATICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. You can actually take lessons from this and apply it to your own life. Action sequences are not as impactful without strong contextual themes behind them.
bro keep up! I liked your reaction. The little detail of pausing to talk to us instead of talking at the same time as an important scene, I liked that 😇
Thorfinns reaction (skipped over in youtube video) when Canute asked who he took after was beautifully subtle. His expression reminded me of Askeladd more than Thors. He took after both of them.
I like the part where Canute said, “You’ve become rather eloquent. Who did you take after?” He meant that Thorfinn learned it from Askeladd. This character was always good at manipulating others with witty words and Canute have seen that from him. When Thorfinn made Canute feel that he should back down, that reminded him of Askeladd which made him have a nostalgic happiness in that moment.
Yes Askalad was elequant But I dint like the comparison as Thorfinn is genuine and not trying to manipulate thats what snaps Canute out of his mind set I dont think this was said in the manga But Askalad will be pleased that Canute is finally the King he hoped for
Thorgil is so interesting man, he is like if thors hadn't turned to good. Also the parallel of how he is the traditional warrior who is mad that he isn't able to fight while thorfinn and potentially Canute are totally fine with walking away and not dying for no reason?!
The contrast was so well done. He’s not dumb nor some brute he’s very conscious of the way life is and how’s he’s chose to live it. He’s exactly the kind of person Canute is striving to “save”
Nah I think Thorfinn has arrived at the peak of philosophy through experience. Hes developed an understanding of Deontological meta ethics through just his experiences. He is absolutely right. Violence should be the FINAL course of action. It should never come to violence unless its physically impossible to avoid. IE if you are hurt and cant escape. If escape is an option it should be taken. Even if that means losing possessions or property. Look into Deontology/Meta-ethics. This was astounding to see in an anime.
13:44 Did you say "aniki" ? That means older brother. The word Thorfinn uses here is "kyoudai" which can both mean brother or sister, the direct translation of it would be sibling. To my knowledge, there's no word in Japanese that directly means "Brother" there are only words for older brother and younger brother (otouto)
This episode was great even though it felt much slower than the last. I must say that as a manga reader, I was quite sad that they didn't include certain aspects of the manga into this episode. One of the key things being that Thorfinn's face was swelled like a complete ball whereas here, the damage and impact of the fight was not as heavy because he healed so fast. But I get that the director was probably going for a more sombre tone this episode, especially with the "carve into" and Pater's scene which was not in the manga. It's really funny because I used to have your reaction at 14:02 😂 when people shit talked Vinland. But like Thorfinn, we just cone to accept that some people may be lost or misguided, or they just don't have the ability to appreciate such a great work that is Vinland Saga. We should feel sympathy and compassion for such people and like Thorfinn, relish in the fact that we have no enemies. Truly a magnificent show.
In the first season: Thorfinn went into a negative arc for the entire season, until at the end: Canute ended his suffering.

This is actually a major theme in Vinland Saga even in Season 1 and most people do not even realize that
i thot we were going to see huntress lady this season hehe
This was GENUINELY my same reaction when I watched this episode fam. Cant wait for the finale and I need season 3 expeditiously!!!!
I'm so glad people are coming around on this series. It's so good.
This series is unironically moving bro holy shit
“If you say this is boring I’ll give you an address and we can sort this outside” Have you not learned form Thorfinn!
To be fair he didn't say what the "sorting" would consist of. Outside they could have a conversation 😂😂
😂😂aye I’ve still got some learning to do
@@Kay-Pee They gon' learn what a TRUE warrior is really like...as inspired by Thorfinn goatselfni
I love evolution we witness in several characters. This is one of my favorite top 3 anime now. It was top 5, this season bumped it up to top 3!!!
Whoever says this is boring we gotta sort it out..the peaceful way like thorfinn. Vinland saga is top tier anime.
Thorfinn found a lot of brothers. It wasn't just Einar, but also Canute, Olmar, and Roald. Just pure trust and respect. *Beautiful chads of anime.*

I love the respect to the old master. Gave him a chair and tool to hold so he can still "farm".
And he still is strong enough to firmly grasp it.
This whole thing about the king's head influencing Canute, for me, represents a way of thinking inherited from his father, whenever the head appears it means that he is reasoning according to the image of a great leader inherited from his father, and created by himself Canute. The craziest thing about all of this is that it didn't just save the farm, it saved Canute's soul.
I mean not literally but you get the point lol
This is the first video I've watched of your reactions. You do a great job man.

Vinland Saga is truly amazing, got me bawling my eyes out almost this episode..
Thorfinns reaction (skipped over in youtube video) when Canute asked who he took after was beautifully subtle. His expression reminded me of Askeladd more than Thors. He took after both of them.
My exact thoughts too I just didn’t express it vocally. Canute confirms this with the eloquent remark as that is very askeladd 😭😭
fav reaction....closest to how i feel
That wasn't young Ketil, that was Olmar with his girlfriend.
Yeah i realized when I was editing😅
the hateful/angry eyes of Canute was replaced by optimistic eyes after talking to Thorfinn.

I love your analogy with the hammer and different tools! Great reaction and discussion as always, keep it up!
Thanks
Once I heard the Navi sound at the start I knew I was in for a good video
