I think the problem is that we chose to own Subarus
No, they are great vehicles
@@Motorcarnut tell that to my Forester’s engine lmao
like a friend told me before i bough my subaru... you are about to buy a car with special needs 😂
@@CarimboHanky mine’s special need is a new engine 😅
@@Super-rf6vr this is the first time im working with a boxer engine and eventho i have owned a handful of cars and have worked with many cars over the years, this damn subarus make me feel like a noob sometimes. they are just different, the way they are built, the special tools you need to work on this engines 😂 its truely a love/hate relationship
I love supporting channels like yours ! I love how you go straight to the point ! Thanks
Thank you! Really appreciate the feedback!
Like if your here because you heard a funny noise from your car
Yep, and see which noise you might have.
you helped me figure out what just happned...& validated the 1st opinion of 3, so far
Great!
Thank you! Very helpful !!
Glad it was helpful! And appreciate your feedback
Eager to see the tear-down and rebuild. Thank you!
I’m making them as we speak! Thanks for watching!
@@Motorcarnut Thanks for sharing it. I have the same issue with my 2009 Subaru Forester!
@liemdinh8232 no problem, I’m in the process of rebuilding a 2010 forester as we speak, should be ready soon.
Thanks just bought a 2013 outback EB25 and it started making a slight noise for a few seconds on start-up. This video puts my mind at ease. Can it be stuck rings?
Very possible, they tend to get gummed up from not changing the oil on time.
Great video. My Subaru (2014 Outback FB25) has the start up slap/knock noise. no noise at idle. then only at certain rpms/speeds I can hear the noise. I often hear it at around 25/30 mph, when decelerating without a break. No metal shavings in the oil pan or filter. It does sound internal, and one mechanic said he took a stethoscope to the engine and he said it seems like it's derives from the center of the engine. Any ideas?
How many miles are on the car? If the noise doesn’t go away when the car is hot then it’s either piston slap from excessive cylinder wear or the beginning of a rod knock. Either way this should be taken care of immediately before you end up losing the engine.
@Rajah_Boy If when hot it doesn’t go away there is excessive wear happening and should be diagnosed. That is not normal.
I have a very similar sound, but it started with an intermittent screeching like metal on metal. One day it would do it. The next day not. The screech would start upon starting my engine and then stop after 20 minutes of driving. Yesterday, I drove 15 Mike's to the store without a sound. Started up to leave and the screech started, but after about 3 blocks switched to a very similar knocking sound like on this video... could an accessory pulley bearing do that?
Yes, especially the serpentine belt tensioner or a pulley starting to fail.
I have a knock. Only been happening for less than 20 miles. Took my 99 outback to Subaru at my appointment time. The "master mechanic" told me thats gonna be expensive. I said how? "That's gonna cost you round 4,400. You should just trade this in and pay for a new car". I looked at him, called bullshit on him. Said "didn't realize you were a salesman, I wouldn't want you touching my car anyways since your just a glorified lube tech".. then I hit him with a good day sir. And left.
First time I ever took mine to the dealership, also the last time too.
Yep, got to be careful of the stealerships
My 2013 subaru forester sounds like the 2nd noise but it only happens when i’m driving at certain speeds?
If it doesn’t go away it’s probably a a worn piston. Can also be detonation (pinging) from bad fuel?
My car doesn't make this noise. It makes a similar noises at a certain rmp (2000 - 3500) and only at 1st through 3rd gear. I had it brought in and I was told it was told it was rod knock but I'm just not to sure it's a 2007 outback 2.5 sohc and it burnt all the oil while I was a 40mnt drive I had just put oil in it a month before so I was surprised it had nothing.
It’s probably is a rod knock then, you can’t keep running an engine low on oil, that’s all it relies on
Just having old oil, will do this high-performance use.
Don’t exactly know what you mean?
@@Motorcarnut I meant to say driving a high performance car with dirty old oil can spin rod bearings. I change the oil in my 400 hp Sti every 2000k.
Yes it can
Or...it could be the mechanic left the VVT tension spring loose...and it's tapping against the valve cover when it's at low idle. How do I know? Guess.
That’s human error.
@@Motorcarnut Absolutely. But you'd think he would've found it the first time I brought it back to have the valve lash checked. 🤨
@seanhoward8025 Definitely should of. Try new mechanic in the future.
I’ve got a rod knock in my car 04 Forrster but it sounds like a piston slap
Rod knock does not go away and the hotter the engine gets the louder the noise. Piston slap is the reverse cold it’s the loudest and as it warms noise gets quieter
On my car the knocking happens on cold start then kinda goes west but then will kick back in if im on low gear accelerating. The knocking doesn’t last and as loud as example in video
Probably should have it looked at but being a Subaru it’s probably not bad at all.
@@Motorcarnut would you mind looking at the video I just posted on my account with my engine sound and let me know if you think it sounds like rodknocking, I was thinking maybe my lifters, I’m not sure
Doesn’t seem as deep as a sound
Just checked and don't see the video?
@@Motorcarnut I deleted it cause I had a mechanic come by and look and confirmed rod knock
I have a 2003 subaru legacy l sedan it sounds similar fast noise my is a high pitched ticking is it rod knock?
Piston slap
@@Motorcarnutit doesn't go away when I rev it could it be Excessive pistion slap is there any way I could send you some videos
Yes, post them on your channel and let me know

@@Motorcarnut Motorcarnut i posted three videos there both in the shorts section of my channel once you see all of them tell me what you think it is hopefully just pistion slap :).
I having the same issue with my Subaru g4
If the noise goes away when warm then should be no problem if not got to dig in the engine to see what’s going on.
hey, i got a similar sound as the rod knock in your video. mine went away for a while, and then came back. also i heard it on idle, but now it stopped doing it on idle. is it still a rod knock? it comes only when pressing gas and it increases with rpm. could it be a valve tick? its quite loud tho
No, a rod knock is a metal to metal sound and won’t come and go. Could be an accessory, like ac pulley bearing , serpentine belt tensioner etc
Piston slap in a subaru is normal. We have 5 of them, one is a purpose built, tight tolerance, endurance car. It has cold start piston slap as well. Pretty sure porsches have it also just not as prone as they have a better oiling system than subaru (piston squirters)
Piston slap is not normal, that is a metal to metal wear. I have serviced 100's of Subarus that don't have that problem. BTW Porches don't either.
@@MotorcarnutI’m inclined to disagree. Built motors with forged pistons slap when cold.
Yes forged pistons do but we’re not talking about aftermarket or high performance pistons we’re talking about stock that the majority of people have.
@@Motorcarnut some ej series engines have forged pistons as standard.
@adamb84 Lol, thank you
what would you charge for a rebuild?
Haveing a similar issue, wondering what a fair rate would be
Prices vary from state to state and from shop to shop, also depends what exactly has to be replaced.
What if it only sounds like theres a knock when you give it gas?
That’s still a rod knock unfortunately
What if it is pre detination due to carbon build up
@mn-vf2io rare on these engines but can happen, you will hear that usually under load and never goes away hot or cold
@@MotorcarnutI have just watched and confirmed it stats under fuel in the owners Manuel that a little knock under load is normal ua-cam.com/video/fbZqsgfNQYI/v-deo.htmlsi=KRqDCJEdYfn2Qrpa
Mine sounds like the rod knock, but it takes about 10 minutes after letting car warm up
Would that still be a rod knock??
And once it starts doing it it won't stop until I turn it off and let it set for awhile
Yes it does sound like you have a rod knock.
I have an 02 Impreza slaps when it’s warm. I got it with 37k on it 5 years ago and I have 95k on it now. Still going lol
It’s not supposed to do that but unlike a engine rod knock it could last 200k or not.
@@Motorcarnut it’s common in the early 2000s ej’s at this point, I’ll take my chances lol
I wish I bought a Chevrolet Equinox instead😮
Not really, those are pretty unreliable.
Lol no you don't wish that
