Been told by my mechanic that the piston is bad. My 1999 subrau OB makes the exact same sound. The subaru has been a real work horse just wish the previous owner(s) would have taken better care of it. So I'm looking at a replacement engine once I have enough money. Was told it could be from overheating. Though I have never experienced any overheating. Did miss fire once due to worn out spark plug wire.
I belive I can help you after 2.5 years of testing to resolve a sludge motor. The product that should reduce or control the PISTON SLAP is called MARVEL MYSTERY OIL that is engineered with 5 chemicals . One chemical will reduce friction and it also cleans GENTLY if you have slude. U.S. Walmart 5 bucks Canda 10 bucks.....use it always for 10 % better MPG to 25 %. PUT 4 OZS in a full tank of gas.....every tank from now on. Put 6 OZS ONLY in with your car oild now and 6 OZS in from now on with your clean oil chaqnge. The product was designed many years ago and my mechanic uncle of 55 years for GM always used it on the farm and in everything especially outboards in the gas....it removes carbon also and varnish.....YOU owe me a beer when it works in a about 2-3 weeks in the motor.
I would definitely take note of the belt tensioners as the bearings go bad and make this exact noise. Try taking off the belts and run the car for a few seconds to see if it went away. When this happened to me, I thought rod knock and yanked off the oil pan only to find that everything was still in spec. Please learn from my mistakes.
Nik Coffman I have a similar sound in my Forester I just bought. If the timing belt tensioner is going bad, tit sounds like this? My belt looks good, but that’s all I know.
Nathan Kennedy, sometimes yes. It's something you should check before buying parts you may not even need. If it's bad enough you'll see movement while the engine is running, there should be no movement. You can apply pressure to the top using a screw driver pushing it down harder on the belt. If the noise stops while you put pressure in the tensioner, that's the problem. replace with high quality parts, that does not always mean OEM parts. Good luck.
My 02 outback does this, not when stationary, but usually most noticable when at or above 55mph, 2.5rpm. Any idea what this could be? It has 135k on the engine, had alot of work done under the hood, otherwise a great ride, I'm wondering if I should replace it or put the money into this kind of repair?
My 99 legacy with 2.5l swap does this exact thing for about 45 sec from cold start then goes away. I just did compression check on all 4 and they are all at 100psi. Id say it's normal Subaru thing.
that car sounds fine. I wouldn't worry about it. With 2.5l Subaru is using very light weight pistons, so they tend to move around inside the engine black a little till they warm up. But in your case they are worn out so they might take longer to get quiet.
User Name there is no gap between piston and cylinder wall. It's the rear part of the skirt that is hitting the cylinder wall, factory designed it that way, because there is not enough metal there to guide it smoothly back and forth when it's cold. I have driven a car that had it since 80k miles and engine outlasted the car at 312k miles. So unless it's clacking all the time, I wouldn't worry about it. Mine only slapped when you first start it up for maybe 20 seconds or so. Actually all three of mine do it with a varying degree of noise. The newer ones don't do it as much, but that noise is what makes a Subaru a Subaru. Even when you go start a brand new Subaru, they too have it. It's normal for these engines to sound like shit.
All Subaru boxer engines have piston slap on cold start. And the turbo watergate actuator control parts make a ticking noice. Unbolt them from the chassis and see if that noice goes away? Also that crank shaft pulley has no vibration damping so if you got a worn bearing it will make it sound even worse?
My factory installed 59K EJ22 makes the same noise on cold starts. The colder it is out the worse the noise is. I would really hope a motor with that low of miles isn't worn out.
Sorry but I Dont agree. That statement would be true if it were A diesel engine, but gasoline engines usually get tired fast in comparison. If your lucky enough to get 250,000 miles out of A gasoline engine with no problems, you got your moneys worth.
well consider yourself lucky. Gasoline engines hardly ever last that long without problems. and even with the emission on diesel engines, diesel engines still and will always last longer that gasoline engines. Show me a tractor or bus with a gasoline engine in it.
Its funny how everyone always has first hand experience when arguing A point .If you type car that fail at low miles on you tube, i'm sure you will get hits on that as well. I'm sure people can get lucky( like I mentioned before) and have A high millage gasoline vehicle, but that's the exception to the rule. Again, gasoline engines on a average, usually do not last that long.
Whatever dude. To get 250k on a vehicle driving normally, you would have to have that car for 20 years, and most people dont hold on to vehicles that long anyway.Like it or not, 250k is alot for A gas engine. The fact that that car even made it to 250k says a lot for A company you claim is no good
sounds like all these guys turned more book pages then ratchets lol take it with a grain of salt it could be a number of things tak3 it to a shop before u nuke something in the motor
My 2 liter engine does this at 130000 miles already. When it warms up (20 minutes or so) it gets quiet. Is this normal? Because I am planning a big road trip in a couple of months.
+Bart ten Thije Mine sounds like this and behaves like yours. EJ201. When it finally gets really warm it gets quiet. Been like this since I bought it and I have done 10000+ more miles now at 170000+. Momentarily very hard driving at 5000+ rpm off road. 4000+ rpm almost full throttle for 10 minutes or so in the thick stuff. And there is no difference. Starts right up. Very minor oil leak since I bought it but no burning so no need to refill between changes. No power loss. It is strange but I don't worry any more. I just let it warm up before pushing it.
Thank you for your comforting post. I believe I'll drive my Forester till the end. I always let it warm up for about 15 to 20 miles. Hope to see some dirt this summer!

scampers Don't vee offended .......I have done 6 years of research on engine conditioning and improved the MPG of a 3.0 litre from 29 MPG to 40 MPG...........FRICTION is 60% of the motor so I also removed that with military technology and RAISED the horsepower curve. I took a 2.3 from 36 MPG to 46 MPG and raised the horsepower. You are muted for being a little jerk
If this product gave you a 25% increase in mpg then I guarantee that gas manufacturers would incorporate it into their gas, heck even if it gave you 5% mpg they'd still put it in, but in reality I'm sure it doesn't do anything except drain your wallet.
You sound like Mike Tyson lol
Totally lmao
Damn beat me to it

iansrving I bet if he pulls the timing cover he'll find he needs to replace the tensioner.

+Y10Q Weight has nothing to do with piston to cylinder wall gap.
User Name piston skirt is nonexistent , relatively speaking, thus lighter and noisier
Go there, there is plenty skirt, and that has nothing to do with piston slap. It's piston to cylinder wall gap

congrats, you now have a diesel powered Subaru.
Definitely piston slap
Welcome to the club.
I had the piston slap on a 163k mile motor, and it went away once I swapped in a 60k jdm motor. I'd say it's not normal and the motor is worn out.
My factory installed 59K EJ22 makes the same noise on cold starts. The colder it is out the worse the noise is. I would really hope a motor with that low of miles isn't worn out.
Timing belt bad or to tight
Bad serpentine belt?
Con Rod bearing is over worn on one of the cylinders. Piston Slap is not that hard on subarus and its more of growling sound on de-celration :)
It also has almost 250,000 miles
Cars don't last forever
yea thats alot for a gasoline engine anyway.

same noise, Lagecy 2006, 2.0, can anyone say what that is?
that's not piston slap , that's a broken connecting rod or spun bearing
sounds like all these guys turned more book pages then ratchets lol take it with a grain of salt it could be a number of things tak3 it to a shop before u nuke something in the motor

Normal.
