The reconstruction of Dresden

  • The identity of Dresden is greatly based on its long history as cultural centre of Germany, with a large built and artistic heritage. The greater part of Dresden was destroyed during the Second World War. It was soon decided to restore the city’s historic appearance, which started a process lasting several decades. Archaeological reconstruction played a large role in this process, especially in the case of the Church of Our Lady, Zwinger Palace and Opera. However, the question of authenticity needs to be raised. Does the quest for the restoration of Dresden’s historic and cultural identity justify the inaccurate rebuilding of the city centre facades? Should archaeological reconstruction of buildings follow strictly the original design, or are adjustments allowed to correct structural issues?

For those who may claim the bombing was NOT a war crime, the areas that were destroyed speak volumes. With the anti-aircraft guns removed, and fighters not allowed to take off due to fuel shortages, the bombers were able to fly low and drop exactly where they intended to, yet the industrial areas were hit by just a few stray bombs, while the civilian areas were destroyed. What does that tell you? This was intentional targeting, and I fail to see how it can be seen as anything but a war crime. Would a different view be taken had it been the Germans who had bombed a city in that manner? I think we know the answer to that.

war destroys everything :( it destroys not just building as well as our way of life and our peaceful time. We should all make sure that there shall be no more war in the future with our love. By the way, it is a very interesting presentation and thanks for the video.
