Traditional Vs. Offset Snips

  • There are a variety of snip styles you can use to cut sheet metal, but they are not all created equal. Take aviation snips for example; there are traditional aviation snips and offset aviation snips, but they have distinct differences.
Traditional snips are great for cutting sheet metal, but when compared to the enhanced design of a pair of offset snips, it is clear to see that traditional snips lack the superior functionality and versatility.

Best breakdown of the different designs I've seen after watching a dozen videos here. Thank you.

About to put metal roofs on 2 sheds and wasn't sure which snips to add to my tool box. Thanks to this video, no doubt left and right offset to complement my straight snips. Best video on UA-cam re this subject. Awesome. Thanks!!!

Just bought a set of offsets from Midwest. I always hated dealing with sheet metal cutting but now after viewing your video I'm kind of looking forward to giving it a go with some HVAC DIY

Thank you so much for your additional tips. I had no idea that you were not supposed to hold it just like a scissors. I’m sure this will help a great deal and once again thank you!

Yes, thanks for the excellent explanation. One thing I'm missing: is there something that straight snips are good for that offset aren't? From what I can tell, offset are better at everything 😅

There’s really no point buying the straight snips just get a left and right offset

Thank you! Very informative. Are there disadvantages to offset snips? I bought my first pair and decided to go with that non-offset, but now I’m second guessing myself.

Nick, the only real disadvantage to offset snips is that the blades tend to be a good bit larger that traditional aviation snips, so if you are working it tight spaces, they might be a bit awkward.
