When I was a young boy the mass was in Latin and the altar boys took Latin "lessons" mostly in pronunciation and meaning, only some of us were allowed to ring the bells as it was a challenge since the priest was several steps up from us at the high altar. We did the Confiteor at the steps of the altar at the beginning. There was much mystery and care in it all.
Now, as much as the high mass was a great thing, and the chant, it did and does need some improvements, they were not forthcoming then nor now.
Some people, only a very few, prayed the Rosary for the entire mass, which everyone knew they should not, but yet, some did. So, there was a disconnect and parts of the mass would be very hard to follow as well, even for us altar boys who were close-in it could be hard to see where we were at, etc.
The revised mass, originally still in Latin was an improvement is many aspects and not in others; the high mass, a favorite of many was gone, the majesty was a bit diminished, but it had some good aspects to it. However, chant was basically gone and that was not good. Not long after the Latin mass was gone, and if you asked about it they told you that it was basically forbidden to say. As time went on the mass in the vernacular got very screwy, it was harmful to the people in the way it was all done. One has to realize the sensibilities of the Catholic people were very disturbed by these radical changes and the jettison of beautiful prayers and hymns. It remains an abuse larger than the sexual abuses and they have NEVER fessed up about it, NOT THEN, NOT NOW. They have and continue to ignore the damage done by the radical changes and abuse of the new form of the mass. The new form is abused all the time, all the time.
In the process they ripped out the altar rails and gave us communion in the hand, now the norm. Often it is noisy before and after mass and prayer takes and effort at such times.
The old mass needs fixing, it needs updating, the new mass needs more enforcement of norms and some adjustments as well. We need altar rails, and we need to kneel to receive.
If Francis is concerned about the environment then he should start with the mass, and not have the Tango at mass, he needs to get in touch with reality that guy. Poor man is a damaged Jesuit, he just is, and he seems, and I can be wrong, a man of some seriously misplaced bigotry.
That having been said, there are any number of "Traditionalists" who are kind of nuts themselves. You know? There is a flip side to crazy Jesuits in the so-called Traditionalist group. I have noted a tendency of converts to be overly pope-of-the-self bent, baggage from their former denominational lives. This is not to say Francis, or as I call him Franky is not worthy of some real criticism, he most certainly is, BUT one must take extreme care not to destroy the office and the magisterial respect in the process of such things.
For these and other reasons, I would prefer a bit more positivity from this and other channels about ALL the good that goes on in the church, we need not fixate on the storm nor the swamping of the boar, we need to emphasize the good, the holy, the chaste, the pure, the sacraments. Leave the picking at wounds recent or old, or the sighs of grief to the Lord, for He hears entire continents these days, and even more. As for quo vadis? Pick up your cross, don't bitch about it.
Let us say and do ONLY that which answers the prayer of Christ in the garden for unity, let us pray and sacrifice for that, and in that, let us relieve His bloody sweat via our prayers and sacrifices, let us add to His relief and strengthening by the angel by our prayers and works. Let us travel in time with offerings for Him.

I thought this was a brilliant take on this from Catherine. We are all feminine before the Throne of God. Therefore the new Mass puts us the people in the center making it more “masculine “ which drives men away. Mind blown! 🙏💕✝️!

Pope Francis has ended the use of the term extraordinary form, which was anyway mendacious, and exploded the theory of the hermeneutic of continuity.
This Papacy has recognised that the new Mass is not a version of the old Mass, but a break from it ; and Cardinal Roche has affirmed that the new Mass represents a new religion.
This at least gives us clarity.
    Lex orandi, lex credendi!

I will continue refer to the TLM as the Extraordinary Form regardless of what PF or CM have say about.

I am now Catholic, but I was baptised Anglican and experienced Christianity through the Church of England. I instinctively balked and internally withdrew from display of trivial or irreverent worship, and found the ordination of women extremely difficult, as something corrupt and alien. In those days, from instinct, I never took communion when a female vicar presided, nor from a woman’s hand (clerical or not) when the bread and wine were distributed. As regards the latter, I still don’t; I always line up to receive from the priest if I am in an unfamiliar church setting.
There is something very, very wrong in adulterating traditional Catholic worship. As Katherine has alluded to, it strikes at the heart of the mystical relationship between us as God’s creation, and God himself. Satan tried it on with Jesus (as the Second Adam) to upset that very same relationship, and I think he’s trying it on now with attempting to alter how God should be worshipped.

Born in 1950, I, as a man, came to be disgusted with NO liturgies in which the priest seats himself where the tabernacle once had been and is attended by a swarm of laity, mostly women, who do all the work while he blinks with approval. Somewhat like a drone in the hive. However, I have also come to be alienated in so-called "trad" masses where everyone exudes fierce anger. This is not the church I was born into; thus, I have moved to the East.

The TLM is wonderful, but we have to be careful not to make it into an idol.

From what I've seen, the Mass was changed to a large extent, to accommodate the "sola" crowd, and the new, all embracing, ecumenical movement; it changed from a "God" centred experience to a "People" centred experience. The Latin Mass was far too "Catholic" (for the new ecumenical outlook), to continue unabated, and I think the results are axiomatic. What if I'm wrong? Then, mea culpa, mea culpa......but at the moment, I doubt it and time will tell. Christus Vincit! Christus Regnat! Christus Imperat!
