  • Today, we're visiting Morocco and the Sahara Desert with the #1 food writer and television presenter in the world, and star of Travel Channel and CNN, Anthony Bourdain! He reinvented the food travel genre. In his groundbreaking first television series, Bourdain travels around the world indulging his taste for local cuisine and eccentric characters. You never know what he'll say, who he will meet, or what they will have for dinner. Fun tip: Moroccans eat almost all of their meals at home.

It's enlightening to see how he matured as a traveler from these early episodes to his last ones with Parts Unknown. Here he comes across as demanding and not at all curious as to why it's so difficult to get a mechoui on demand in a little town with few tourists (as someone who lived in Northern Africa can attest, this is not an on demand kind of thing -- he would have had better luck connecting with a family during the holidays or a celebration like a wedding, when they would have been more than welcoming given typical Berber hospitality.) I think it's emblematic of the process of maturing that one follows as one goes from being a tourist to a traveler, which he clearly was towards the end of his journey. RIP, AB.

It struck me a little like that, too. Though I understand Tony's desire to experience the "real deal," I kept wondering why the show's producers couldn't have made arrangements beforehand to prevent everything from being such a hassle. Honestly, I think if it had been me, I would have been fine with the couscous. Especially upon hearing the slaughtering would have to be done in the ritual way, which is none too pleasant for the animal, to say the least. I guess that is something that would only occur to a soft (hypocritical, considering factory farms) American, who is not the host of a cooking show. Oh, well.

If they knew he was coming and what he wanted they would have sacrificed a young lamb for him. I saw the Bedouins took their live animals with them and sacrificed and cooked them in the desert. Nice fresh meat, not lying in a sack in the desert heat all day, attracting the flies......

Really well said. I was surprised how difficult it was to watch this episode. Everybody was so clearly uncomfortable. It reminded me a little of an episode I saw where he went to the Ozarks or something and kept trying to find someone to feed him squirrel or duck. He eventually just had to cook it himself, and the locals were grossed out. There were like, “man we eat chicken.”

Well said sir. I was thinking the same thing, having no knowledge of North African hospitality and culture, it seemed like he was completely taking everything for granted and super jaded. Kinda a pompous twat if I’m honest. I felt a little embarrassed for him. But I do remember his later episodes of shows like parts unknown and no reservations he spoke often about how he was embarrassed about his earlier visits and how he regretted some of his depictions and attitudes. Undoubtedly this was an episode he was referring to. He definitely gained more empathy as he aged as well as self awareness

I wonder if he saw so much, experienced so much, felt so much, felt so deeply, saw such intense things and his depression just still made him feel empty inside. Depression is real. If you feel this way, reach out for help. There’s no shame in it, it is a natural thing. I didn’t start watching him until recently and geez, what a loss to the world. His death must have disheartened many far and wide. Rest In Peace Anthony

I don't recall EVER ordering fries/chips, hamburgers etc on my trips. Even in Hawaii I didn't eat North American food.
Eat where the locals are lined up. They know the best places. No. Not McDonald's lol
Side note- I'm almost 45 and I grew up eating all parts of the animal. I didn't realize it wasn't normal for North Americans to eat Liver, kidneys, tongue, heart etc. The problem is alot of people don't know how to cook them. Older generations just boiled the crap out of everything lol
