  • Sadly this Tiger Shark Season on the North Shore of Oahu is coming to an end. While it is possible to see tigers year round they won't be as common until next Fall. These two dives were some of the more special encounters I had with tiger sharks this year.
Sometimes tiger sharks stop by our usual survey sites, they are highly migratory so it’s at random but if we are lucky they do a few passes and sometimes they take interest and build up the confidence to approach close enough to the point that we actually need to deter them. That is very rare and so that much more special because it’s incredible to be approached by any marine life and with sharks, while it requires a lot of awareness and it’s important to have the know how on how to deter, interactions can be beautiful if you keep a high level of respect and awareness. That comes with learning things to look for just as you would learn about any animal or potentially dangerous situation (like driving) out of respect, not fear, so that you have the best experience possible and safely (so you are able to continue to do so.)

Tiger sharks are definitely more rare than I wish and you can never guarantee what you'll see in the ocean but we were so lucky for these encounters. The tigers are my favorite! Learn more by joining me in the water @OneOceanDiving and you can help me with @oneoceansharks #SharkId Identification program, I am the lead biologist on this important component that gives a solid base for population counts and our ethological studies on social hierarchy and agonistic behavior specifically useful to understand for human interactions.
