Would be nice to get an in-canon reason how he goes from acting like this tall dark suavey type guy from the first movie and into a gutteral middle aged fellow in the space of 3 years...
By looking at the first Inspector Gadget, it looks like it had some dark stuff in it, like RoboGadget having flamethrowers, missiles, and spikes, the city of Riverton on fire, and some of the things differ the movie from the cartoon, like Gadget having a love interest, Dr. Claw's face revealed and having only two minions instead of having a lot of them and even Gadget being a shy, mild-mannered man. The sequel, however, stayed true to the cartoon, with Gadget being so clumsy, bumbling and imbecilic, in a good way, Claw's face never revealed throughout the film and having many henchmen, and the film being more funny than the first one. Also, French Stewart was better at doing the part of Gadget better than Matthew Broderick did. I'm not saying that Broderick is bad, he just didn't put enough effort into making Gadget a funny character, that's all. I do like watching both IG movies and they are great, but I never watched the cartoon TV show. I was too young to know that this movie was based on an animated TV show that aired before I was born.

Well, Matthew Broderick's portrayal was far more competent and clever. French Stewart's portrayal was much more dimwitted and incompetent--which is actually closer to the cartoon Gadget. Though Stewart's portrayal was closer to the cartoon, I _still_ cannot deside which actor was the better Gadget. They both put so much effort into the role that I cannot decide which one of them plays a better Gadget.
Nate Hausmann French Stewart, hands down. He's much closer to the original Gadget and he emotes much better. He also tries to copy the original voice actor's manner of speaking, and that's really cool. Overall, I feel like Stewart truly tried to make the whole thing work, while Broderick gave zero crap.
I love the Powerpuff Girls reference. It's one of those things I wish they kept in the movie.
