My working theory is that Ted is actually a white dog covered in engine oil from being petted all the time. Another great episode, don't ever try to get too polished and professional. Now in the right frame of mind to take the starter motor and lift pump off the tractor. I realise where I have been going wrong with my mechanical work is the lack of suitable head wear.
Good evening gents. I think you will find that Land Rover was employed as early ARV by the Met Police at Heathrow airport. The amber lights was for use airside. AYL with T suffix was a Met number plate of my memory serves me correctly. P.S. Luv the channel
Well.... if its not on fire and you're not beating the fire out with jacket.... you're just not trying enough. That Foden is worth its weight in gold !!! pulled that thing like taking a piss.
The mighty Foden is definitely the workhorse of the yard, it's a pity they are no longer built Good to see you have more fire extinguishers. Great stuff and a great channel.
Excellent bit of finessing with the large adjusting spanner. Oh, see if you can get in touch with the Fire Safety Officer at your local hospital. They are likely to have hundreds of retired extinguishers (Foam, Powder & CO2) that they'd probably let you have for free. - Speaking from experience.
@@csnelling4 A large spanner to remove the offending part and replace it with one from the stores. Combined with a big hammer for the fine adjustments. It's true, I've seen them do it.
Yes indeed, great fun being had by all! Think you need some slightly bigger extinguishers for next time, good to see you making progress on these heritage vehicles so you can get them working again, sometime.
Nice to see a little conflagration, takes me back to my Chertsey days when we got a Conq with Windsor turret back across Long Valley. The fuelling failed so some loon got it going by pouring petrol from a Jerry, straight down the inlet. I followed at a distance.
I do have to say for working on such big and expensive things they are working with a limited amount of tools every time I see someone with an adjustable wrench in hand to do the smallest task I have more tools to work on cheep turds of cars manufactured in todays time cars that won’t last as long as those tank though. y’all keep up the good work guys love watching y’all keep history alive and know
You know you have to work in the freezing cold and the rain and snow, right? Knew a couple of Aussies in Perth, building labourers. They told me they had a year out in the UK and to make ends meet, they worked on sites. First time it rained, they headed for the site hut. ‘OY, wankers, fuck you off to’. 😂🤣
I discovered by complete accident that if you spray loose nut on what ever is burning hot by torches the loose nut will evaporate in a cloud of toxic fumes before it reaches what ever is seized up. So mechanics like myself and millions of others think that using a copious amount of heat and loose nut will do the trick. Well the only "loose" you will get is a temporary buzz of loose nut fumes without actually loosening anything. I've discovered this while working on an exhaust manifold of a Ford car. The torches were out of Acetylene so I had to improvise. I needed the manifold bolts so it was imperative to spare them. So I went for a simple propane torch and I had the idea of using 15W40 and I saw the rust gobble up the oil where it was mostly needed. The heat was enough to loose the exhaust manifold bolts but not hot enough to vaporise the thick oil so the lubricant got into the threads and got loose easy. So less heat more lubricant is the idea instead of superheat and not lubricant in the threads at all.
Tip on the CO2 extinguisher from a firefighter, you'll get a lot more out of it if you have it on in one large burst rather than lots of small ones. Will be more effective at starving the flame of oxygen too.
I'd love to see you guys doing work on a Ferret, Saladin or Saracen too. Maybe as I make my way through your videos I'll find something. I'm 23 years old and within the next few months I am buying my own Ferret. It's a big leap for me to be taking but I can't wait and I am learning plenty from this channel.
I am not a tank engine guy, but if you got that much backfire there is something with either the valves opening in the wrong moment or the spark happening at the wrong time
@@MrHewes Nice to meet you and Ted! Shame we couldn't have stayed longer to chat, but thanks for the tea. Hope to see you soon (with or without more extinguishers)
I mind being on the back decks of a Cent arv in Batus in the 80s, when the engine went up in flames whilst it was pulling my brocken down Chieftain. You've never seen tankies jump off the side of moving vehicle so fast in your life...honestly though it was going to go boom but tge Reme driver pulled the fire extinguishers and then we all had to await a further double recovery....in a red template...squeaky bum time!!

Now I know the answer to a question I was gonna ask in another video about the what looks like a White armed response / paddy wagon Land Rover . . . . . Need to invest in more fire extinguishers guys. . . . . . Almost every video I’ve seen so far has had things on fire in them lol. Daniel.

It's unlikely to be a SAS land Rover, unless they stole it from the MET at Heathrow. I wouldn't rule out that possibility. The beggers will steal anything that's not fastened down. I've seen them do that too!
I’ve restored a Cent and I’ve a lot of respect for them, so I gotta say that was absolutely brutal to watch. Maybe cut back on the crowd-pleasing torch, hammer, and setting stuff on fire technique?
There’s a good reason I torched the fuel tanks out, the official way is to remove the exhaust branch manifold, however they are extremely fragile and hard to replace, I would never run a cent with belly fuel tanks because they are known for back firing. Also without the belly tanks it allows for regular maintenance, you may have “restored” a cent but I actually use these things a lot not just paint them and park them in a shed for 25 years. The GUE had seized up solid because the spark plugs had rotted though. With powerful modern Batterys it’s totally pointless anyway. Especially in an ARV. If you haven’t had to use a Torch on a centurion you haven’t worked on one that has been abandoned out in the elements for 30 years.
I agree with removing belly tanks and pup engine, they just get in the way, so we did that. Just didn’t involve so much torching and bashing with a hammer.😊 The one we restored was ex-Canadian army, 1952, parked outside since mid 70’s so getting on 50 years. We’re a museum with about 80 running vehicles and we drive them around regularly for the public. The old girl runs like a charm. Doesn’t backfire! The only reason I might consider putting a pup engine back in is the power traverse draws about 150 amps when going full bore during shows and even with 4 batteries they get dragged down pretty quick. I use a torch all the time, nothing to beat it for freeing up rusty shit. Malcolm
