- So, I planned a trip to the Burbank Card Shop. I've been looking forward to it for weeks, and what happened is hard to believe. The shop was great. The cases were filled with eye candy. The experience was terrific, but what happened next is hard to believe. I'm going to share the experience and tell you how things played out. Baseball Cards are such a fun hobby, and memories are what they're all about, and I definitely made a memory that I won't be forgetting any time soon.

Honestly Graig, I think it was a blessing in disguise. You'll see that card many more times. I didn't like the white mark over his left eye. I think if that was my card, I'd see it every time I looked it it. A definite grail card for you, but definitely not a rare card.
Graig, you’ve confirmed my theory on vintage. It’s centered/eye appeal cards and everything else. There is such a demand for centered/eye appeal cards, you can throw out the pop counts and the graphs that track the values. The centered/eye appeal cards don’t sit anymore as your videos shows. I saw a Jim Brown rookie PSA 2 centered on eBay the other day and it’s gone already. Your video is a lesson to all of us!
For me: It's creases and then centering, too, I would expect, a crease on cards from the 1930's and 1940's, though everything else is a bit of a deal breaker for me.

Ah man, so sorry this didn't work out for you, Graig. What a story. Like you, I have a special place in my heart for the Banks rookie. It's the first "major purchase" I ever made as a collector. I spent about $600 on a PSA 4 in the spring of 2019. I know you'll find yours -- it's a great card. Good luck.

You could look at it this way (as painful as it sounds)- you’re a great Dad for not making the kids & family wait forever bored to death in the car. I say this with experience because my poor mother would have to wait for hours as my late father & I would get lost in guitar stores playing guitars we would never buy (“We’ll only be in there for a minute, Mom”👌🤭). Mom got wise to our shenanigans & would pack a book knowing full well how long our quest would be. You’ll bag that slab some day soon- that card will come.🤘

The owner probably phoned someone else who was interested and told them the card will be gone unless you get it today. It was a blessing in disguise. Sometimes our head gets excited at the moment and jumps the gun before thinking. If the Ernie Banks rookie is your dream grail card, then it should be the best possible before buying it because you'll be looking at it the rest of your life. That card had quite a big top and bottom centering issue in the front. I don't think I would have bought that one unless it was quite a bit less than $1,100, but that's me. There are many of those at that grade I have seen at shows and on E-bay and are dropping in price, so its only a matter of time before you get it. Don't settle on your dream card. Others maybe, but not that one.

You really teased us on this one Graig. I was ready to congratulate you & wait for my cigar from you. However, he who hesitates is lost pal. We have all gone through episodes like this & later kick our asses for not jumping at the opportunity. At 72, time is waning for me so I no longer hesitate in situations like this. FLAME 🔥 ON! 😆

That’s rough!!! You let $100 cause all the extra stress. Happened to me before over values even less. I’m at the point now where If I know I’m stressing I’m going to just pick it up to avoid that remorse. Here’s to continuing your search!

Sorry to hear the card sold. I think we all have that one story about a card that we should have grabbed. For me it was a 56 Jackie Robinson. Eventually you will get your Banks and it will be even better!

I know the feeling!! I see a card on Ebay that I REALLY want. I can't sleep knowing it could be gone at any minute. Next day I rush to the computer and bam its gone...nooooooo

Graig - great video! Didn't see the twist coming at the end. Stopped in to the Burbank Card Store last year on a trip down south and found I was woefully unprepared & overwhelmed. Need to get there again. Good luck with the Banks RC hunt and continue to enjoy the journey!

Graig, Sorry it didn’t work out. I just checked the Terapeak product research results via eBay and the card sold for $1175.00. Not sure if you knew that or not. There will be another one. Until then, you still have my custom made card as a consolation and it’s perfectly centered.

AAAHH! That is brutal! I'm so sorry to hear that. I had a grail card that I saw at the Denver card show a few months ago. I'm hoping they vendor still has it next weekend... Its brutal. I'm learning the same lesson. If the price is right, you have to pounce immediately. I really hope you find another. That was a great price!

I will be honest with you. I thought you found a way to make it happen. The fact it sold from underneath your desire to own one tells me it was not yours to have. I live a couple miles from Burbank Card Shop, so I go in there from time to time. You know they let you lay away. You could have put down some cash to hold it and then pay it off a few hundred at a time.

Craig, Craig, Craig...when you find THE card you have to pull the trigger unless it's just not financially possible. Oh well, another WILL come along but it's just a question of when, and of course, will you compare it to the one that got away for the rest of your life. LOL By the way, whatever camera you're using is excellent...crystal clear.

Oh, Graig. This is like Pee Wee’d big adventure but with a Banks instead of a Bike! We could have passed the hat for that hundo!! Oh man, that’s a willlld story. What an adventure - but will make Ernie that much sweeter when you find another!
You have no idea how many times I watched Pee Wee's Big Adventure as a kid. I wore that VHS out.
I think that the lesson here is that when the Great White Whale surfaces, you'd better have your harpoon ready.

That's why I always carry $1500 in cash with me at all times...just kidding. Tough pill to swallow but it was just not the time. You'll find the right Banks for you when you least expect it. Sounds like I'm talking about a relationship..😂I guess it is. Good luck, Graig.

Sorry you missed out on the card. That '54 Banks has always been a conundrum to me. Never owned it, and it drives me nuts that most of them are centered so badly top to bottom. As a general rule, I don't mind OC cards, but like 90/10 gets tough. You can find ones that aren't centered badly t/b, but they command a premium. I've been a Cubs fan for more than 30 years. Came close to pulling the trigger on one similar to that (it was actually a PSA 3.5) but the dealer couldn't come down to comps. Overall, my favorite Banks I think is his '55 Bowman.
I'll end up with one soon. I thought the whole thing was sad/funny and I had to share.
Painful, and I think many of us have had that. Sometimes, when I'm in that tough call like that, I examine about how important the money in the difference is. I think "So if I die with $100 less, does it really make a difference?" (unless people need the money specifically). Or, perhaps you hesitated because you weren't sure at the time if you really wanted this one. Save it for the National, when there will be twenty of them in the room.

Graig good story but i would’ve told wifey & kids you gotta give me time to hit a bank or ATM because I’ve been wanting this card for decades so look you lost it and that was a amazing price for that SGC 4.5 🤦🏻♂️ I myself always wanted that card and was lucky to pick it up a show in Tampa last year in a PSA 5 but it cost me $1,800 and i was happy with it because there was space between his name and the top of the card. Oh well too late now the search continues for you good luck, even with me having a PSA 5 if i have seen that card and was able to pay $1,100 without a doubt i would’ve picked up a 2nd one if the price is right which it was, be safe NY Lou

I’ve got a similar story. While at one of the recent past Chantilly shows I found one of my grail cards, a 1948 bowman Sammy Baugh PSA 7 for $750..below comps and right up my wheelhouse. Well before I throw down that kind of money I want to think about it.. so I walk the maybe 50 feet away and go get a drink at the cafe. Maybe 10 minutes later I go back and card was gone. Sold! Lesson learned! Don’t think too hard when you find a deal. Looking on the bright side,I just saved myself 750 😂

Craig, oh my ,so sad. 😢. It has happened to all of us. Years ago at the National in Cleveland I found a T206 red Cobb with an Old Mill back Beckett good 2. I looked it over, rounded corners but nice centering. The dealer said $800. I thought great price. Well I said I would he right back as I went to the rest room checked my funds and ,returned 5 minutes later to buy the card and a man and his son had pulled the same card. The dealer saw me watching snd kind of shook his head and kind of said with his body language sorry. and the man proudly .bought it. It happened to me a few other times over the years as I contemplated and hashed over a little too long. You snooze you lose but its normal if you have only so much cash to spend and we always want the best deal. So sorry for your disappointment, I truly understood exactly what you went through.

I will say this when you make that kind of decision you need to understand that its a good decision not to pay 100 extra and live with that if thats the cost of losing the card then so be it at the time you made the right call and you had the chance to get it but you didn´t. Good luck finding the card

Also as a lifelong Cardinals fan ive always wanted that ernie banks card. Its a beauty. It says something that id rather have that than a 62 Lou Brock.

I own the 54 topps Ernie Banks in a psa 1. To be honest it looks like it came out of the garbage, but I love it mainly because I'm a big Ernie Banks and Cubs fan. What are your thoughts on low grade vintage cards? Do you see long term investment value in them, or are they better kept just as cards for your pc?
I think Iconic cards will always have value in all conditions. Just look at the 52 Topps Mantle.

Yeah..card prices are still higher, on average, than they were before Covid. Will the market go further down, though. Time will tell

Your story about broke my heart. To be so close to your grail card and to have it sold out from under you is a really ‘cruel’ way to lose a card but your grail card! I really appreciate your maturity as to the situation. Right now I’m waiting for my own grail card and I have to save up for it. I will have the money by March, 2024 but ohhh yes it might (probably) be sold by then. Being a senior on a tight budget I can’t just buy cards whenever I feel the urge. I really empathize with your plight but the ladies awaited for the soccer ⚽️ tournament. You are a great dad and husband!

I am a disabled Vietnam vet, and I was looking in my cellar and I have a lot of old baseball cards from 50s 60s 70s and would you believe I think I have that Ernie Banks card none them none of the cards are PSA rated. What I’m looking for is somebody who can help me, sell rate or be done for my cards. I also have many old baseball gloves from 1900 to 1930 baseball bats from 19:00 to 1940 and a few other things thank you.

Craig, This video will prob get over 3 K views -- Burbank Card Shop should have taken 300 bucks off the card just for the "free publicity". I had never heard of the shop and now I plan to visit on my next trip to Los Angeles.

Why would you be looking for this card for 30 years when you're on ebay and it's auctioned off all the time in SGC 4 through 5 and PSA 4 through 5? 2 of these sold the past week on ebay in SGC 4.5 for $1,006 and the one you missed out on for $1,300 with best offer. And the $1,006 was also in very nice shape with similar centering. Ebay auction is usually the best price, so just keep checking...

I think all those high end luka doncic cards will be worth not much 10 years from now… hes a very good player but I dont think will ever be a top tier champion that his cards are priced at….
It comes down to popularity too. Dirk is a champion. Paul Pierce is a champion. Tim Duncan won multiple championships. Luka very well win a ring, or MVP, but will also depend on, how many people actually care in the long term.
Luka cards were so expensive, it got silly.
Scared money don't make money all those roads trying to get card cheaper......they gave 200 off before taxes you contiplated a 100 on sales tax that you saved already on dealing price
