- Meet Sean Synder (Navajo & Southern Ute) and Adrian Matthias Stevens (Shoshone Bannock, Ute, Apache), who entertained the crowd at the San Manuel Powwow during the sweethearts couple performance.
I’m so honoured to see this two spirit couple dancing in the circle together, we two spirit people have a full right to be accepted in the circle no matter what dance style or category we are given, your not there to dance to show off, you there to dance for creator, the grandfathers and grandmothers, our ancestors those who can’t dance anymore or those just being brought into this life, everyone is gifted by creator in some way, no matter who you are, all I can say is I hope this two spirit couple stay in this way of life and they are truly happy, be proud of who you are, you are sacred spirits, I’m a two spirit dancer, I proudly dance contemporary jingle dress

Unfortunately, all too many our first Americans have forgotten that Two-Spirit people (a new name, the old name is Berdash) are far older than anything our brothers and sister have today. Weren't they disqualified in the preliminary round because they are two spirit, a same sex competing couple?
is there a follow up coming to address this at the San Manuel Pow wow ?
I was filming this powwow, as I have filmed every powwow season since 2010. The Sweethearts Contest at San Manuel Powwow had become a really big deal. BIG prize money!
All the couples out there had their own routines. I noticed these 2 guys had a good flow. I put focus on them, thinking they would advance to finals.
But, they were "disqualified" by the wording of the competition, not their identity. Judges blocked other dancers by same rule.
The rule was so that any 2 really great dancers didn't just hook up to win the $10K. Each couple had to show some proof of their union to be able to compete, and win some prize money.
So, I got on Facebook, right then & there, and just pointed out it was a shame because Sean & A.D. were an actual couple, great dancers, with a smooth Sweethearts routine that added to this contest.
And, the rest is powwow history...
Probably others said things also, but I was busy filming, couldn't follow social media. Next time I saw Sean & A.D. was New Years Powwow in Weatherford, OK, where a couple's contest was part of this powwow. I watched them rehearse in the lobby, there was a lot of good competition. That's how it's supposed to roll.

This is what powwows about going way back honoring twospirits as it should, i dont go to powwows that say traditional and dont, they say traditional but to me just colonised and restrict two spirits just like catholic church did. Wtg keep shining❤❤❤

Absolutely LOVE these guys. I am an old White guy but have many Native friends, especially my Navajo Medicine Man. Learned a lot from him, experienced a lot while with him. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come up here to Montana for a Pow Wow. I live in Great Falls, and we have an annual Pow Wow for the Little Shell Tribe (WHICH FINALLY GOT FEDERAL RECOGNITION.) held at the First People's Buffalo Jump (where I volunteer A LOT). I would be honored to host you.
This makes me want to cry their bravery is so incredible for others to realize it's OK to be who you are meant to be!!! :)
