So I’m looking at this amazing build and saying to myself, I’ve got that tool, that machine and that machine so yeah, I can do this. Then I went to my drawer of skill and knowledge and realised how empty it was. I mean it echoes in there. Probably should have invested in the tool between my ears first. 😛
I can't tell you how complimentary and refreshing that comment is. The usual comment is "yeah, I could build that too if I had all those tools." People seem to forget that tools don't drive themselves, nor do they take into account design, joinery layout, wood movement, grain direction, etc. The tools only do what we tell them to do...well, most of the time...😂
Keith, you inspire me to get back into woodworking. After we had our first son years back I just never had time to go down into my workshop. Then we moved and I sold all my woodworking tools. But now that my kids are older and I have more free time, watching your videos makes me want to create again. Thanks so much.
Wow! You just inspired ME! It's comments like yours that make all the hours of editing and filming worth it. So, thank YOU! And best of luck getting back out in the shop and making some sawdust. Just be sure to wear a respirator 😉👊
This video was incredibly impressive. So much knowledge and skill, and better yet you share it all without hesitation. I've been making furniture for almost 4 years and learned a few great things in this. Thank you!
a god level mode of woodwork. wood working and camping are among my most favorite content on youtube. I plan on doing some diy projects but probably just gonna do the simpliest and easiest way the pocket hole and wood glue lol.
Sir. I came to know about you on Instagram. You are the most skilled, intelligent and knowledgeable person i have ever known in the field of wood working. I have never seen any of the tools you have been working with in my country. Respect your knowledge. Fan from india Sir.

I built an almost exactly same looking cabinet. 4 solid wood doors with continuos grain, push to open, dovetail batton stabilized. Nobody, I mean nobody has ever noticed any of those details :-/. At least I am happy now that even professionals would build it the same way.
I really enjoyed the door movement part. You don't see those kind of advanced techniques as often. I don't know if I could justify that extra time for an almost hidden detail (unless those doors really expected abuse) but it was fun to see how it's done.
Thanks Brent! The extra time was worth it to make sure those doors remain flat...at least hopefully they stay that way. LOL. But i've never heard back from the client, so they must be good!
I absolutely love these doors. I've done some similar (but much more crude) techniques with dovetail battens for a few pieces around the house and for friends, AFTER I saw this video for the first time. It was a great technique and I've enjoyed using it to up my own game and build some more skills.
Beautiful cabinet, and a great video. Dovetail battens are a time-tested method to keep panels flat. Unless abused, this piece will last for hundreds of years.
I love your optimism, Rich! I sincerely hope you are correct...you just never know when wood is gonna stand up and smack you square in the face no matter what you do to control it. 😜
Clean look, good execution, fun and unpretentious presentation. Good one. :) Ony one thing: soft close hinges and PTO don't really work together... but I'll just chuck it up to your client insisting on it.
What a simple, yet stunning piece of furniture. I bet it will last for generations even if some weirdo paints it purple down the road. There are not many woodworkers that put that much thought into grain orientation like you and that really makes a great piece separate from an amateurish one. Congratulations!
😂😆 OMG purple paint...can you imagine?!?! You're probably right, though...all that effort just to slather it in paint and make it look like a giant eggplant. Well, hopefully it will still be functional. LOL. And thanks for the kind words! 🙏 👍
GREAT content. Inserta hinges are a game changer. However when I use Blum's push to open mechanism (Tip On) on hinged doors I typically use a "free swing" hinge which pops the door open way further than the soft close hinge and also helps not have to manually push the bumper in before you close a door that has soft close hinge on it.
Thanks Taylor! Good tip! These hinges allow you to turn off that soft close mechanism, so if the client doesn’t like the way they operate currently they can turn it off. 👍🏻
Take care of those hands please!!! Excellent job! Very good idea of the bars to accompany the dilation of the wood. Germán, Montevideo, Uruguay (Forgive my English....)
Great video and project as usual. A tip for cutting elongated screw slots using the Domino that I've found very helpful - layout Domino center lines on opposite faces - cut a 10mm slot on the top face using the medium width setting. Then cut a 5mm or 4mm slot on the opposite face (again medium width setting). Manipulate the plunge depths as required. This accomodates a #10 or #8 wood screw (washer head type) nicely. I posted process on the FOG (Festool Owners Group), if you're interensted.

This video just came up on my "to watch" list. Very nice, especially with the "keys". But at the end I noticed that you had to push in the little opener cylinders because the soft close doesn't provide enough force to reset them. I'm not sure that's such a good combination.
Customer didn’t want any hardware visible. While the 2 mechanisms don’t work in tandem the soft close still prevents the doors from slamming closed. And if at some point the client changes their mind, they can add door pulls, remove the push to open mechanisms and the soft close is ready to go.
Nice and clean simple design . Great piece love the way you did the cleats . i also have done cleats like those on a chest lid and have had great results. Thanks Keith

Hi Keith, it would be really cool if you made a video on how you source wood or pick out your materials. I’m an amateur woodworker but am having a very hard time identifying where to buy hardwoods at a reasonable price.
I actually buy a lot of materials on CraigsList and Facebook marketplace. There are a lot of people out there who mill lumber to subsidize their woodworking hobby. Try searching in your local area.
This video just came up on my "to watch" list. Very nice, especially with the "keys". But at the end I noticed that you had to push in the little opener cylinders because the soft close doesn't provide enough force to reset them. I'm not sure that's such a good combination.
