Starting with 2007.5 with LMM Duramax, the EPA required pickups to used a DPF. In 2011 with LML Duramax, DEF aka Diesel Exhaust Fluid was introduced. Regen is the process of burning off accumulated soot in the DPF, also known as Diesel Particulate filter. Soot is a byproduct of unburnt fuel aka particulate matter. We can cover more of the Regen process in a different video so please comment below if that’s something you would be interested.
DPF temperatures during an active regen will quickly climb to 1000 deg F in order to quickly burn collected soot off and allow the DPF differential pressure to come back down. Temperatures during active regen can reach as high as 1300 deg F. Driving the truck you'll notice a different engine pitch, and higher idle while stopped. You may feel extra heat underneath the truck during active regen and will occasionally catch a funny smell out of the exhaust.
Now that we’ve explained the Regen process, those vents are starting to make sense… But Why is it so important to cool the exhaust? Take a look at this Exhaust tip that’s been powder-coated. Through several regens during our 2,000 mile drive back from SEMA, it has melted and burnt the powder coating on the tip. This is a DPF back 5” exhaust btw which didn’t have any vents. Curious to see how this works compared GM’s stock exhaust. I know what you’re thinking.. don’t powder coat exhaust tips… Well, on vehicle that do NOT go through Regen, powder coated tips seem to work fine. However, you may want to cerakote for this application since it can withstand more heat.
Cooling the exhaust gasses before exiting out the tailpipe is important and has real life benefits. Because the tailpipe is exposed, the vents bring cooler air to reduce the temperature so you don’t burn yourself if you happen to walk behind your truck during or right after an active regen, and accidentally touch the exhaust tip, it could cause some injuries and result in lawsuits… Also imagine pulling your trailer hundreds to thousands of miles with truck going through several active regens. It could melt the trailer.
If you live in a city and the truck goes through an active regen, it could potentially damage the vehicle next to the exhaust as well as your own vehicle’s paint.
Lastly, cooled temperature can reduce wildfire according to the state of California..

I knew what it was for as soon as I saw one. Not just on Duramax. It is to clean up the exhaust to pass emissions test.

Reduces the ppm because it sucks in more fresh air for dilution.

Jet engines have used this for decades. Reduces smoke, temp, and noise in their simple designs.
    e.g. PW JT8D used them.
The directed air from a "fanjet" engine cools exhaust temp etc.

Banks showed that with increased the exhaust to 5” throughout instead of having it bottleneck to 2.8” at the vent, it brought egts lower than oem and it decreased back pressure resulting in a horsepower gain. Should look into it and let us know what you think. Kory Willis did a bunch of dyno numbers about it. I think your buddies tip just burnt cuz it was powder coated and not cerakoted for the heat cuz his is a banks…

The same setup is used on turbojets and low bypass fans to quite the engines, it made 727 legal to fly after 1989. It was developed as a way to cool exhaust IR signature back in the 1960’s to reduce heat seeking missiles hit probabilities.
My 2016 LML got 4 mpg over a 500 mile average. No code was tripped so the dealer could do nothing but they told me to delete it soon. Now that I am bad I get about 20mpg, kinda fast and I use Hot Shots Secret to reduce the smoke.

I work at a drive-thru carwash and diesel trucks come through and I get a feel form their exhaust and it's just so much hotter than all the other little gas cars. I guess all it needs is just a little bit of air flow to cool it down.
Can I put a vent exhaust on an old truck which doesn't have DEF and doesn't go through the soot burn-off process? I've noticed the paint has burnt off the tip and the whole pipe looks bad.

It serves as a way to cheat the emissions as it acts as a venture to bring clean air in to drop the CO levels during testing . The solution to pollution is dilution . To bad Volks diesel did not put on there diesel cars they would have had no issues for meeting requirements . They used these tips on Fords also did emission test very low at end of exhaust but put tester end ahead of slots you get actual reading which is alot higher . Its like saying a vehicle that gets 60 miles per gallon is bad on the environment but 10 or 15 miles per gallon is better for pollution, did you get that one .

    • @JWMontoya
      @JWMontoya  2 роки тому

Unfortunately it doesn’t help cheat enough bc the truck can’t be in regen during the test anyway

So much investment to decrease out going emissions why not go to the direct cause and perfect it their we want no soot, and soot is unburnt feul why not invest in piston technology to better burn the feul i am not saying it's easy it just doesn't seem harder then building a valve train that you slap on the top of the header the connecting a catalytic to the turbo then another one on the exhaust pipe behind a filter and other parts that cost a lot to fix and replace i am not saying that i have the answers i am just statijg their surley has ro be a better way we want to breath clean yes i just don'think exploiting a group of people is gonna get that maybe if we work to bring that without bending someone over we can make it happens because i am going to be honest i. This closing this here does't make any sense so much to do one thing yet it feels like someone is trying to beat around the bush
