This is most likely the real reason he doesn't speak. As the physical embodiment of rage incarnate, you can imagine the toll it would take on the vocal cords during some of his battles. I know while I'm playing it's a constant stream of shit talking. If that was your reality, you'd have permanently lost your voice long ago.

Personally, I think he stopped talking when he realized a lot more was going on behind the scenes than just "Night Sentinels fighting demons". His experience with the Seraphim and the aftermath of that probably made him realize that the Maykrs weren't to be trusted, and his one and only goal of demon annihilation wasn't shared by the "gods" of his new people. At that point, he felt, shall we say, distant. Perhaps he didn't view Argent D'Nur as his home any more. He felt there was no more to be said, no one to be convinced, and speaking would just stir up political trouble that he had zero patience for. So he shut it all out and just aimed straight at Hell, ignoring everything else.
That, and the fact that his new and improved body removed pretty much all the human frailties he struggled to overcome before, so he no longer raved uncontrollably, no longer felt his sanity slipping as he fought the soul-devouring hordes of Hell. His rage was now contained perfectly in a vessel worthy of it, capable of honing and focusing it on exactly what he wanted, nothing wasted.

It’s heartbreaking. It’s like no matter how victorious he’ll be in his battles, he’ll never be happy or tranquil again. And he feels he’s responsible for what happened to Daisy.
I honestly think they're gonna add to it going forward
Daisy is alive in the reboot, she's just an easter egg - but seeing as you can find her on multiple missions it must be canon that the Doomslayer is either hallucinating or Daisy lives on.
Alot of people like to label doomguy as the ultimate badass that cares for nothing but killing demons and they may be right but deep down inside is a tragic story with a broken soul inside it
Not just daisy, everyone he knew, his family, friends, fellow marines everyone ... Because of Hell.
Don't forget that he's a devout christian catholic as well so his hatred for Hell and demons is also his doctrine

No, he can still grunt and scream when taking damage in Eternal. I think more lkely, he's afraid to talk lest his words lead to another figure like the Khan Maykr bringing tragedy onto the world again.

@@namelesspersonnel5130 its shown he still cares for humanity and innocent life, while hes rough around he edges, in 2016 he saved VEGA from being erased and chose to save him instead, and with the human interactions sure hes a dick but hes been rampaging in hell for 3 billion years and worst of all without a single cup of coffee. But he never harms anyone that isnt a demon or allied with them, showing that he does still care. As for him speaking, I have no idea.

the thing i love about Doomslayer is what Midnight said could (and probably is) completely true. He IS scared, but still brave. Brave CAN mean fearless, but it also has several meanings. And Doomslayer seems to be the other one. Doomslayer is scared shitless, yet still knows what needs to be done, so he kills them. Even on the brink of death, he's still ready to keep going at them.
I don't think he can feel scare anymore. His mind was broken after many years fighting demons and being sealed away in Hell. He may still keep him being sane, still protect human, gentle with them, but i don't think his mind was the same as us, not anymore. At the begining, maybe, but in two latest game, it was pure rage.

I think the better way of putting it is tranquil. The Slayer isn't screaming in rage while ripping and tearing, he's become so accustomed to killing that he won't waste his breath on that he wishes to destroy.

His face looks calm... Not saying he is mentally but physically is. I mean think about it, why does the Slayer use guns when his hands do just as much damage? The berserker power up basically overrides that calmness that he has. He's taking his time killing demons because he probably enjoys seeing the suffering that's on the faces of them.

I think you're getting fear confused for desperation. He was not scared of the demons, but rather is desperate to eradicate them, due to him knowing ways at stake.

@@wesleygetsinger1859 for sure, he wants to have at them - even before the Divinity machine made him stronger. Me might have had PTSD pre-machine, but after.... he truly BECAME the PTSD to the others, instead. His rage, his anger - though great - is of the controlled variety. What emotions he still has, he owns. A true psycopath towards demonkind.
I think it was a little of both. Doom 64 mentioned he was having nightmares about his time fighting demons. Not full PTSD, since he didn't demonstrate any avoidance behavior and seemed willing to jump back into the fight, but definitely a bad case of combat fatigue. Probably got worse after he locked himself in Hell to keep the demons from invading again.
@@brigidtheirish that is highly plausible and I'm fully willing to take that on board, how ever that detail could be possibly retconed , like the whole thing with daisy, she died in doom two but seems to be alive in doom eternal, now I know some people have their theories about that but it's more than likely that Hugo Martin fully intended for daisy to be alive alongside the evidence proving so. Furthermore, it was said in the codex that the slayer was crippled with rage which would explain his erratic behaviour, but still a great theory and thanks for putting it on the table.
@@madslayer4197 Considering thousands of years and an entire alternate universe separate Doom Slayer's Earth from the Earth he's currently on, I *really* doubt Daisy's alive. Her appearances are either hallucinations, her spirit watching over him, or just fun Easter eggs the developers slipped in.
And, technically, she died at the end of Doom I.
No one could ever understand what it's like to thwart hell 3 times, end up in foreign land unable to speak unless it's about demon gibberish, had to fight said peoples gladiator prisoners, had to fight more demons, lose his new brothers to treachery by hell. And then thwart hell AGAIN AND AGAIN only to be sealed and do this shit over and over.even if he did speak what would he possibly have to say that he couldnt demonstrate with his body language and hands?

I would love to see the slayer interact with other humans in the next doom game, not like U.A.C scientists but civilians and survivors
I think it said in one of the pages you pick up in the beginning of the game that a couple 100,000 people made it off world, and were being put into a cryogenic state. So does that mean that humanity has also colonized other planets? That would have to be so because where the hell would they go? Maybe the doomslayer will go to whatever planet or moon they colonized and try to reconnect with his humanity.

So basically, the divinity machine "cured" his scarred mind, his human weakness, his fear, it increases the positive aspects of the Slayer like his determination to destroy the demons, his focus, strength and raw skill, while decreasing the negative aspects... like fear, chemical imbalances in the brain n'such that caused him to lose his mind so much?
That's pretty neat, overall the story of Doom Guy feels a bit tragic
I like to think that he became a force of justice. Talking, and human stuff became unnecessary, he's on a perceptual crusade.

I have always interpreted it that the Doom Slayer knew what a careless word can do (he mentioned about the demons to the Makyrs which led to the whole shitshow) so he chose not to speak anymore.

I always felt that given the medieval setting of Argent D’Nur that the slayer just took a vow of silence until his mission was complete. It made the most sense

another thing to consider when talking anout the trauma of the slayer is to remember that the slayer in Doom 1 and 2 had to kill even hellified soldiers that were maybe his friends and brother of arms and imagine how scarred that would leave a marine

You know, ever since Doom Eternal came out, I keep getting weirded out by how much you see the Slayer's face, despite the fact that you not only see his face perfectly clearly in the very first game, but it was a major focus of the HUD, I.E. you see it pretty much the entire time you're playing. I guess characters like Master Chief just gave this impression that space marines in awesome green armor just aren't allowed to show their face.
Maybe the divinity machine healed his pain. He still understands what he has to do but now he’s blessed with divinity and his pain has been lifted. The khan makyr offers to take his pain away and give him what he’s missing and he doesn’t blink and continues with his mission.
The divinity machine makes him a god. It’s more than likely it healed him!

Guts sees everyone as monsters when he's fully encased in the berserker armour.
Its really messed up if you think about it. Everyone looks up to him for answers in the ending of eternal, and everyone thinks he’s some strong perfect hero, but on the inside of the slayer, its just never ending pain and misery for him. No matter how many times he saves earth, no matter how many demons he kills. No amount of good karma or moral can fix his mind.

Here's the thing why it's so frightfully calm; look at how he interacts with other human beings. The only ones he ever got visibly angry with were Samuel Hayden and Olivia Pierce.
Yet, with every human interaction he has in Eternal, he's exceptionally gentle and/or restrained, even when moving other people out of the way. He could have easily killed the armed UAC soldiers barring him from the BFG for example, but he didn't.
