Mike, don’t worry about the videos being to long. I’m here wishing you had 2 hour videos.
I can second that.
I'm wishing for a live-feed of the build! XD
Yeah I don't think any of us would mind a few hours a week. there is not a TV show on that could hang with this guy. I mean he takes his time not only to do things right but to tach us to do them right, these car building shows show them starting a weld and 2 minutes latter the entire chassis is welded up. At least here it is very detailed and you can truly learn. I am building a hot rod and a lot will relate. I even using his zip ties with the rubber coating to protect wiring. very good product. This many is no dummy and his work ethic is second to none.

It's a real art the way Mike so effortlessly explains things that I had no idea about previously, and I just sort of get it. That's the real mark of a truly knowledgeable person; when you can explain something complex in a simple way.
I don’t know who originally said it, but one of my favorite quotes: “If you can’t explain it to a child, you don’t understand it yourself.”
@@shanenc90 exactly this. This was the quote my observation was based on 👌🏼
It was Einstien. An incredible human intellect with the Patey mind set. To simplify the complex is to make the complex function elegantly simple.
I never thought I could be fascinated by tank sealers, but here we are. :-) -Daven
I'm sure you guys could fit in a Draco and a Scrappy video in. Not quite megaprojects, but certainly worthy of a slot.
I can almost hear Simon interjecting with "he did what"!
no kidding. and it flew by.
@@imaner76 We have an aviation channel coming up. :-) It's been planned since I bought my Piper Arrow III Turbo about seven months ago. :-) (Actually randomly landed in Spanish Fork flying it home from South Carolina to Bellingham WA. Got to see the outside of the Patey hangar at least :-)) It's going to be education based as ever, various history bits, science/engineering behind, showcasing planes and pilots and famous aviation things in history, "Experts in Planes" where I fly some expert around somewhere scenic while we discuss their expertise in some area and cool things about that, etc. Etc. Going to be fun and totally is not at all a way to make my plane and flying a tax write off... ;-) -Daven

Mike, you are not doing it by the book, you are writing the book! I am blown away by the level of ingenuity, experience and craftsmanship you display! As an old aerospace engineer, I can tell this is going to be the most epic Cub ever, period! 😊
Easily one of the coolest things on YT. If all learning was this fun, we'd be such an advanced society.
The precision of both manufacturing and assembly is NASA level. Genius!
Maybe better!!!
Definitely better, dollar for dollar
I’ve built space hardware, this is better.
NASA wishes. 😁
As I pointed out somewhere else hereabove, with Mike at NASA, the shuttle would still be flying today!
Mike, as former AIr Force, I want to thank you on behalf of all of us who served, and who are currently serving. I'll have to check out your website and maybe order one of those shirts. You are an amazing individual. Thank you!
Thank you for your service to us all. We love you, we support you, we honor you. To all those who sign up knowing they may one day pay that ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, we salute you. I love you all. Mike
@@MikePatey it's guys like you that make it all worth while. When I signed up, I was an immature 18 year old. Yeah, I knew I might be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice, but most people who sign up don't know that. Now, 45 years later, it's painfully clear that we're enlisting the wrong people, that it's the older guys who should be enlisting, since we have some concept of what it's all about. But, like you, I am so thankful for those young people who are willing to give it all, to lay it on the line.
But, it's people like you who honor those who serve that really brings home WHY we serve our country, and what it means to be patriotic. YOU, and those like you, are the reason we are proud to serve, and are thankful that there are people like you worth being there for.
@@MikePatey Former Patriot Missile system tech here. Your kind appreciation for service to the nation is refreshing.
The flag and certificate was a remarkable gift. You inspire a lot of people.
Ron, you are an absolute LEGEND! Mike, you are a lucky man to have someone like Ron helping you out!
I don't believe you have EVER bored the crap out of me Mike!! I really enjoy hearing all the reasoning behind the way you are assembling your tanks! Seeing how someone builds something without getting the long in-depth reasoning behind every step is just watching without understanding!

It would be really cool if the money made from additional t-shirts he sold went to the wounded warriors project.
OMG man, each rib is separately CNC’d????? Holy freaking crap man! That is insane. Absolutely amazing!
Yeah right next level
Exactly what I was thinking after doing wing skins on my Maule with all stamped ribs its so cool to see his! 😎
This is an engineering project, this wouldn't go to well if this was a manufacturing project. Milling out chunks of aluminum is used in rocket manufacturing and is one of reasons why rockets are expensive. It is a good way of adding a zero at the end of the price tag.
Tymoteusz Kazubski as I said mike is next level bro , there is a reason kit planes have pressed ribs etc , cost ! Don't mean this is NT pretty cool right !
Mike, you are an inspiration. Thank you. The video section with the Flag that was presented to you brought tears to my eyes.
As a crew chief on KC-135’s, I spent many hours scraping conformal coating off of the insides of the fuel tanks that wasn’t prepped properly and was pealing off! Yes there were clogged fuel filters! Pain in the rear but at least the tanks were big enough to fit inside! Go USAF! Retired after 38 years of working on C-130’s, A-7’s, and finally KC-135’s. Definitely going to order one of your shirts!
Worked on at planes, can’t forget cleaning off poorly applied pro-seal in wing tanks, you could just barely get your arm in. It’s a wonder that I don’t have nightmares about that. My shoulders still suffer 35 years later. But that seems to be common with aircraft mechanics, eh?
Heh Mike, Thank You for being a patriot to this great Country That We Love ! What a privilege and honor I had serving our Country for 31 years. Beginning as a 21 year old kid starting as a FE/FM flying on C-119C's with R4360's and then onto C-119G & L's with R3350's for 8 1/2 years then as a Crew Chief on C-130H's and retired working on our Unit's C-130H Phase Maintenance Dock. Loved working and flying on the Herc .... What an awesome aircraft ! Your sealer looks like what we used in the C-130's wet wing tanks. Absolutely Love your build videos and look forward to each one ...... Back To Work !!! GOD Bless !
It blows my mind that Mike can manage so many details and just leaves nothing untouched by his specific form or perfection. If i was a student and not already established and tied to my life i would hike across the country and sleep out in the wild and work for free just to understudy with this amazing human being.
Mike, in my humble opinion you are the epitome of the American dream and the entrepreneurial spirit that makes America what it is. The squadron recognizes that as well and is what they dedicate their lives to protect. I believe you deserve the Presidential medal of freedom for your contributions. Outstanding!
I I'll have one of those shirts, Got to say this Mike when you were talking about the gift from the Squadron I knew you were going to shed a tear a bit cause I was doing just that, I'm English I live in the UK but very Patriotic for UK and US forces, Red White and Blue all the way!

Mr Mike Patey you are a "Master". A National Treasure. Very proud of you. God Speed !
Thanks for supporting our troops! You are such a great example of how to work and the proper work ethic I think your videos should be compulsory for all school children and collage engineering courses!
Crashing Draco turned out to be a blessing, thank you for making the world a better place, you truly are Mr. Inspiration.
I vote after Scrappy is finally finished you combine all the vlogs and make a movie out of them. It would be awesome to see how Scrappy took form in a matter of hours rather than months/years even though it's been an amazing adventure being along for the ride!
Those dudes and dudettes in the 799th Expeditionary Squadron are all badass. One, for doing what they do, but two, recognizing a stud civilian and what he represents. To all of you, I salute.
The amount of engineering in everything you do is simply astounding. I'd love for you to do a video telling us about your childhood experiences (good or bad) and decisions you made as a teenager that might have contributed to your genius. I'm 43 and I just can't imagine knowing a fraction of what you know.
Just had two very stressful weeks at university and just turned in my last assignment for this semester. What could be better to celebrate than a Mike Patey video. So nice to see someone else work for a change!
I almost wish I'd discovered Mike latter so I could watch the whole build at once. It's torture waiting a week for these episodes.
It's amazing how compelling this is compared to mainstream media. You realise how much producers ruin content. Here you are with a iPhone and I'd watch this over anything. To those that criticise new media. DO BETTER! Amazing.
I've thought the same thing. It could be worse though. The only sports I watch are MotoGP or Superbike racing. 4 or 5 months of waiting in the offseason.
Content like this is why I basically don’t watch television or Netflix anymore. Content like this on UA-cam is infinitely better.
Same! YT is my sole source of entertainment, especially aviation channels. So much more real, personal, and down-to-earth compared to actors and drama TV.
I'm a US Army service member currently overseas I found your channel shortly after getting to Germany and I just wanted to let you know that I have been really enjoying your scrappy build to the point where I might eventually get a single prop pilots license
A fascinating video once again Mike. It was great seeing your wife, son and your loyal wingman Ron helping you along the way. The torque tube has got me intrigued. This is going to be a wonderful when it is completed.
Mike, your love for American Troops is so infectious! God Bless the United States and all who honor her.
How do you manage to make a 30 minute video fly by so fast and leave me wanting more.... I have been involved in no more than dozen home build projects and this build is fascinating even through a digital screen laptop in the Philippines. I feel like I am in your shop learning and wanting to help.

Imagine if Mike designed a bullet proof vest. Rated for 9mm but tested to 50BMG.
If you get hit with a 50 bmg anywhere even with armor body plating, will still kill you just from the recoil effect of liquidating your organs or your meat. The shock from the energy would either push the steal plate through your body, or the shock will liquefy your organs.

Guys, if this is the level of madness that Mike's up to with Scrappy, ... what's going to happen with Draco II when he rips into that airframe. :))
Waiting…. Not so patiently
I completely agree that I am very interested in Draco X, even more so than this build. However, the more I learn as I watch the Scrappy build, the more I am in love with this little hot rod as well! It's funny-in the years that I have followed the Patey family (and the rest of the Flying Cowboys) I have often daydreamed of owning my own bushplane. However, at my age and circumstance, that probably will never happen. I spent so much of the early part of my life chasing big checks (crazy hours, living away from my young boys, etc.) and blowing the money on God knows what, that I am content to earn a good living and enjoy the time I have left with my kids. The foresight, attention to detail, creativity, engineering, and craftsmanship that we all watch and enjoy lead me to two conclusions; I have to go see these guys and planes in Oshkosh and I have to get a ride in a bush plane one day!
I think I love this plane more, the fact that it's way more functional for camping, and still a off road hot rod.
I think the workaholic has been doing just that in the background! You could see it in the background in one of his previous videos all sanded like he was prepping it to paint.. probably already sexy shiny black😏
Just wow, that last part about the troops and the t shirt got me. Mike, your generosity is awesome.
If I lived close to Mike I’d be at the hanger every day working for free just to be a part of the awesomeness. So excited to see scrappy complete.
I have thought the same thing! How would it be! 😂
Mike needs to auction off 3-7day windows where you bid to be a gofer-helper on Scrappy.
You pay for all your own travel & accommodation expenses just to be able to work with Mike for a few days
All proceeds could go to charity and the education would be priceless!
Ive passed by on I-15 several times and picked out his hangar from the interstate.. been so tempted to drive over there but probably couldn't get in the gate and he probably doesn't have time for visitors even if theyd let you in.... But yeah.. that seem surreal being in his shop🤩
would be like Sampson Boat Co.
Thanks for this Mike. I had no idea the process was so detailed and precise. My uncle Fred was a wing man for Boeing for over 40 years. He got a lot of satisfaction from it, and was a meticulous craftsman. I got a brand new appreciation for the work he did through this video. Keep up the awesome aircraft. Back to work.

As an Aerospace Fitter at Airbus building the wings of the A320 family aircraft, hands down this is my favourite video. Some of the stuff was way out of our process and standards but for your application they are still b-e-a-utiful. How that wing came together was so simple and mesmorising. Its deffo beats having to drill the ribs to spar posts. Hopefully you take a trip to the UK in the future after the pandemic and get on one of the Airbus tours at Broughton (if we restart them). Mike, be sure to print the flag on the sleeve as if it were flying as your moving forward. Friendly reminder. Love your work.
Yes, this! Don't want anybody wearing a shirt with a flag in retreat.
My understanding is it doesn't matter which sleeve, just as long as it's flying with the stars forward as if moving forward. Correct?
@@kelsondigital6183 that is my understanding as well. after all, the stars don't go "on the left" they go "next to the pole" and if that pole is on a vehicle in motion then the stripes will be to the rear, no matter which direction it's viewed from. (unless it's REALLY windy 8)
I just checked out the website, the image shown in the video is the back of the shirt. So, the flag is on the left sleeve and facing the correct direction.
After you learn that bit of information, its really annoying seeing it messed up all over the place

Keep it up!
Mike that flag must be onboard for Scrappy's first flight.
