You need to hire this man to do the flyby's at the Freedom Factory for things like 2.4 hours of Le Mullets. Would be sick seeing and hearing that LS roaring over the crowd before the show.
It's not the only LS plane in the world either they need to get in touch with the owners of the others and have a whole formation of em do a flyover.

I am not sure who you are, but I built this with Chris in his garage, we painted it in our friends big rig paint shop and we mated the wings and tested and flew this plane at Glendale airport together. I have all the pictures from even the very first parts being built and magazines with me in them as well. I helped buck most of those 25k rivets on that plane. You are right glass panels were to expensive at the time and iPads didn’t exists for this application. No disparaging taken I know the facts and have any proof needed. There should be no question about the aircraft being able to handle what was designed. C. O. Was an amazing engineer and the proof is in this aircraft. Anyone can make improvements, but this has been more than proof of concept. We have plenty of things we were going to change and do better for the next iteration.
This is awesome and couldn’t have gone to a better kid. He definitely deserves it. Congratulations Trevor and when you come home I better get a ride.

You can’t get more American that a Apache mechanic winning the Track Hawk. Congratulations and thanks for your service. My son is in the Marine Corps. He said the Apache Pilots are crazy. They will put a Apache down while taking fire then get pissed and light the place up when they lift off.
I bet Texas Speed got a call today for a Aluminum 427LS motor for a Carbon Cub…lol. Seriously, As a LSA Pilot I don’t think you could get the weight and balance right to put a LS in a Cub. But I bet you could put a Aluminum LS in a Husky Bushplane by Aviat Aircraft. They are a bigger plane and I believe they have a useful load of like 1,000lbs. They come with a Lycoming 0-360 at 180hp from the factory. A 0-360 weight is like 335lbs without accessories, so they are pushing over 400lbs ready to fly. A aluminum 5.3LS (L33) is only like 465lbs. You would not need all the car accessories. Install a lightweight starter and small alternator I don’t think they are that far off on weight. I bet with the right engine mount and a little tail weight you could put a Aluminum 5.3LS in a Husky Bushplane with the right guy designing it like (Mike Patey) with great success. Cleetus if you read this check out the Husky Bushplanes. This is what a lot of guides use in Canada to pack out Moose and gear with the hunters. They are a beast. Ask Mike Patey if the weight and balance will work to build a Aluminum LS Husky. I think you with be surprised. A gearbox may be your biggest issue. Mike can tell you the weight and balance in 10 minutes, I bet he can design a engine mount also. We just seen a lot smaller plane flying with a LS, but a LS powered Bushplane would be super cool. You can buy a used Husky pretty reasonable, probably cheaper than your Cub. Then convert it over to a Experimental aircraft so the FAA doesn’t complain. I think you are onto something, be great content for McFarland Aviation. Plus the Husky is big enough you could fly somewhere to pickup a engine block or transmission. They have a huge payload. Just think what you could save on truck freight?. lol.. 🇺🇸🦅✈️
Don't forget about the reduction drive weight
Airplane engines are designed to operate at medium and high rpm for 2,000 hours before an overhaul, while automobile engines are designed to run at low rpm for the majority of the time with no intent to operate at such loads for any established timeframe. I’m not saying it isn’t feasible, but I would be scared of something breaking at the worst possible time (takeoff/landing) as an owner or operator.
@@ZJC1234 i totally agree with you. But look up Viking Aircraft Engines. They have been using Honda 4cyl car engines for about 10yrs with very good results. I believe they are the number one choice of engine for EAB aircraft. I know they are the number one engine used in Zenith aircraft. As a LSA Pilot I was skeptical about auto conversion for a aircraft. But the Viking 130hp has changed my mind. My buddy built a Zenith CH701 with a Viking 130hp. He is pushing 1,000 hours on this engine without a issue. He takes off at 5,500rpms and cruises at 4,200-4,500rpm with a climb prop. He has won several STOL competitions in the LSA class with this 701. Then change the pitch of the prop from climb to cruise and fly 500 miles home. They also have a 90hp Mitsubishi 3cyl engine that works great on very light aircraft like the Chinook that’s a pusher type aircraft. I have seen one of these fly and it’s amazing how short they take off. It was designed for the Rotax 582 2 stroke. This little 90hp doubled the range and makes it a great STOL aircraft also. Guys have used VW and Corvair engines for years without the gear reduction. They are direct drive. But I worry because the crank was not designed to spin a 70in prop. Put I understand where you are coming from. I was skeptical about Auto conversions for a long time, but they have a good track record now.
Congratulations to the winner! It must have been crazy trying to get the CG right in that plane.

@@04foxxsakeLmao how true is it though, everyone has a charger, Camaro or a street bike Lol several of my buddys are military and this describes them well 🤣
I worked with aero/auto conversions in the past and while Cleetus is correct that 6000 rpm would be a better number for peak power...the way propellers work they are only efficient within a small rpm range so if you gear it for 6000 takeoff you are condemning it to a close to 5000 cruise rpm which is pushing it where the reliability won't be as good. The fellow gearing it for 4200 takeoff is smart as then you can cruise more like 3000 which it'll do all day long.
I wanted to make a 2 speed gearbox where you could use 6000 takeoff then hit high gear and run the prop at close to the same rpm while not spinning the engine so hard for cruise....but everyone said 'nobody does that'. But it would work sweet on an experimental V8 aircraft.
Easier to just feather the prop than use a two speed gearbox
It'd be pretty sick! The only problem is the extra weight of adding a two-gear drive box that far forward of the CG.
Well just need to bolt up a powerglide
the old Buick/Olds two speed variable vein torque converter
@@bravoA-su8xmthat would be sick, although I don't think there has ever been a piston powered aircraft engine with a torque converter on it, there would be a ton of heat produced and there would need to be some sort of pump inline to supply transmission fluid. Just too much complexity for aviation use considering how inefficient and heavy it would be
Many turbo prop engines are designed with similar principals to a torque converter though, like the PT6.
I have a 67 GS400 with an ST400 transmission though and I love the dual stall speed converter, a blast to drive around.

Tell you truth. That plane sounded more like a WWII plane than anything else. Something like a Lightening. You guys are right though. Bigger cam, ported and better collector. The flyby was awesome. Notice the climb rate was staggering. Fun reliable plane and inexpensive to maintain. Great swap.
Compared to an aircraft engine, it's not reliable. It has far more points of failure and liquid cooling adds to that. It's also being operated at a much higher rpm and load in a plane than in a car. How long do you think your car engine will last driving up a mountain at 4k + rpm constantly?
@@AnonyMous-jf4lc 4200 was take-off rpm. The cruise speed would be much lower. Not pushing that engine at all.
@@ronjones-6977 this isn't the first LS in an experimental or the first auto conversion by a long shot. 80% power cruise will still be the same as constantly climbing a mountain in your car at a much higher rpm than it was designed for. That's not conjecture, that's fact directly from someone that is avid in experimental aircraft.
Which makes me wonder how many mazda 13 B rotaries are in planes?. I know Many plane engines are in fact rotaries. But just wonder how a 13b would do?@@AnonyMous-jf4lc
@@AnonyMous-jf4lc Some of the best WWII fighters were liquid cooled and most of those V12's ran at a similar RPM with the PSRU bringing the prop down to normal levels. Functionally speaking, there isn't much difference at all between this LS and a V1650. You're comparing apples to salamanders and your knowledge is based entirely on apples.
