- NuFace, Foreo Bear, and Ziip - Are they worth the price tag?
Microcurrent devices are all over social media lately, but do they meet the hype check? I review the science on microcurrent devices in this video (in painstaking detail). Let me know your experience with these devices in the comments!
My final thoughts: We need double-blinded randomized controlled trials to evaluate these devices. Here's how it's done - Non-working devices are used on the control group and then real devices are used on the treatment group. Next, an INDEPENDENT reviewer that does not know which device was used evaluates the subjects. Unfortunately, when the person evaluating the results knows which subject was treated or which side of the face was treated, this leads to inherent bias and is a much weaker form of investigation!

Thank you! I'm 3 weeks into trying the NuFace for review and I was like... maybe I see something? Do I see something? I don't think I see something... Haha!
Haha well take before and after photos - see how it goes!
@Doctorly I've got em! 😬
Looking forward to your review Jen!
I've used my NuFace for a month, and I haven't seen ANY results. Not even the immediate lift that many influencers show off. I thought I got a dud or I was doing it wrong somehow. I almost thought about switching to the Foreo Bear.
I had the same experience. Not sure if it was worth the time and effort.
science is so sexy! Thank you for this review doc!
Thank you sooo much for doing hours of research to give us honest reviews! I love learning about the science behind it. We appreciate you Dr. Shah!
Thanks Ana! Always appreciate your support!
Curious why you singled out Ana in the comments an why I can't find on video review on this item?
Thank you so much for this video. I was considering purchasing the Foreo one, but have changed my mind now that you’ve pointed out the lack of scientific research behind it. Thank you so much for devouring the research so we don’t have to! Keep up the great videos!
Buy the Nuface or the Clareblend mini- thousands of women use them because they work!!
I'm a licensed medical aesthetician and I been doing microcurrent on clients for 16 years. I have clients that were suffering from TMJ pain and I used the microcurrent gloves and this was the only way to get rid of the pain. These clients were on some serious medications that weren't working, spent alot of money on pain management and therapy, suffered for years with headaches. My clients come religiously for microcurrent facial, if they go 2 or 3 months without, the pain comes back. I have another client that suffered from fibromyalgia, and she swears my facial is the remedy. These women are 60- 70 plus yrs old. I also do radiofrequency skintightening treatments, so they definitely look very young for their ages. Today I turn 63 and no believes me, i usually get asked to see my ID and I love it! Lol
My clients stopped using botox and fillers and depend on me to keep their skin fabulous.
O goodness! You are right! I just realized my jaw is much better! It doesn’t pop as much as before and I never noticed until I read your comment! I’ve only been using my micro current for a month and half but another great benefit I didn’t even know existed! Thank you!
When I buy the Bear, I will try it on my neck as well. I have cervical spondylosis and it hurts like hell. I probably had TMJ, but after braces, a lot of that tension went away. But now I grind my teeth. Anyways, I found Bear at "reasonable" price and I am willing to invest for double possible benefits - my face and my spondylosis. 😁
So which device do you recommend?
TMJ suffering here.. looking up in my area immediately!! 😭
your testimonial of 16 yrs sound more concrete than the analysis on the studies👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Science vs personal experience. I'm always in the science team, but this time must say ... Foreo Bear works for me. I got it as a gift and was extremely sceptical, but because I didn't want to upset the person who spent such a big amount of money to get it for me I've started using it religiously and I see the results. It's not spectacular, but my jaw line is much sharper, my cheekbones are more visible and my forehead is smoother. I can consider myself as a single case study if you will, but yeah, surprisingly for me, it bloody works. One thing, you need to use it consistently, every day and wet your face a bot before applying gel. It also took me a while to find my gel. The Foreo one and NuFace irritated me, I tried Korean aloe vera gel and it's much better. I wash my face afterwards.
P. S. I'm 40 years old with quite good genes and do botox only in the area between my eyebrows. However, my skin elasticity is not great and that's why I think older population is more likely to see the results. There's not much to fix if you're in your 20s.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Like I said, I’m open to changing my mind on this but waiting for my science!
HI! I just started using the bear and agree the serum irritated me too! I’d love to know which korean aleo Vera gel you use?
Do you have an issue using the device without the app? I can't get it to work without it and it is very frustrating.
@@robinwalker6067 no. I've never used the app. I registered my device, ran it with the app once and never used it again.
@@Doctorly What I think is interesting is that those of us who use microcurrent, and do see a lift use it in the cheek and jowl area which is where your beard is! So perhaps this is why you did not see a difference. I use the Myolift which is much more technical than the Bear, and I do see a lift in the upper eye lid - so no hooded eyes, and see a lift in the cheeks. That said, it takes time commitment and there is a learning curve.
So, I have heard a lot about radio frequency for creating more collagen. Which you mention as one of the biggest signs of aging. Please review some radio frequency devices, or recommend on in-office procedure that would create more collagen. Thanks for the great videos!
I’ve been using the NuFACE for the past three years and have seen an absolute overall lift and firmness of my face!!!
But you have to use iteveryday for how long?
15 minutes

I wholeheartedly agree!! The typical consumer does research on their product especially now. These companies ought to invest in a double blind clinical trial without photo shopped images published for the world to see. It's not about "believing" in a product, it's trusting it.
All these devices that use electric currents which is basically electricity CAUSE CANCER AND ALL KINDS OF TERRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS!!! I have been using micro currents for years now, it does work if you are consistent. It’s been a trend in Asian beauty industry before it hit the US market. I use the brand LG, and I really like it.
Which one?
Yes, which?

As a board certified esthetician, I appreciate your transparency on this topic tremendously. I seek PROVEN, and SCIENCE backed information and reasoning. 10/10❤
I've been using the Feipushi microcurrent device for a few months now and loving my results! My brows and eyelids have lifted and so has my 58-year-old neck. My jawline is tighter and my cheeks feel firmer. I used it 6 days a week for the first 2 months and now only need to use it 3 times a week to maintain those results. Wish UA-cam let us post before and after pictures so that I could show you my results from this inexpensive little tool. I love it and will always use it. :)

Yes. I also purchased the Feipushi and am very happy with my results. It has 5 levels and goes up to 600 microamps. It was very affordable and I have recommended it to friends.
Hi, do you still have the same opinion? I am thinking about buying it!
I would love to see your before and after. I am 53 and just bought the nuface. I am considering returning it...on the fence.
I found your channel while I'm considering purchasing the NuFace. I appreciate your commentary and opinion. With all due respect, you may be too young to actually see a difference after trying it. You don't have any wrinkles or look old enough to show any signs of aging to see improvement on. I do, however, appreciate your opinion because this device is very expensive. I am in my 60s and I have, in the past, used fillers and microdermabrasion treatment. Since COVID, I am just exploring ideas that I can use at home. I work in healthcare myself and have had COVID twice, so I want to try to minimize my exposure to people and still take care of my skin, as far as anti-aging is concerned. Thanks for your opinion and advice. Stay healthy and safe in your practice.
I love my NuFace and my Myolyft. I’m 48 and notice a big difference when I use it.
I thought the exact thing! Why not try it on someone who's a bit older and needs the improvement not a younger face like his.
I have been using Foreo Bear for several months now, love it. T-sonic pulsations, and anti-shock feature make the threatment so pleasant.
Does it work?
I got rid of my Foreo because it didn't do anything for me. Plus, it gave me these weird electric shock-like feelings.
I love your humility! Thanks for being open minded and for taking so much time to research for us!
Thank you Michelle!

Over the past few weeks I realized my skin needed a pick me up. Tonight I whipped my Nuface out after months of not using it and saw a difference right away. My under eyes were puffy and I just looked tired. After this one use, I swear my cheek bones and under eyes look lifted and awake. I did this treatment before bed but honestly the pick me up felt motivating no matter what time it is and I look forward to looking fresh tomorrow. Gravity is real and anything to help us not look tired or older. Anything helps. Serums, fillers and facial stimulators. Just do it ladies!
Small foot note but please research what people are finding about fillers. They aren’t so temporary and may expand in time.
Thank you for this! I’ve been considering getting the Nuface and this really helped. I love that you called out the companies to conducts real studies!
Ah you're welcome!
Hi! Thanks for this video. I think my main question issue with the muscle loss vs fat loss argument is - does it matter what the cause of the volume loss is? For example, fillers aren't fat, but they can be used to cover up fat loss. Increased volume from muscle being able to make up for fat loss would explain the results of the facial yoga study...
Hey Michelle! I think that’s a fair question and makes a lot of sense. One reason I don’t love the idea of muscular hypertrophy is just because it could theoretically make wrinkles worse by strengthening muscle movement, especially in the forehead and around the eyes. Also, asymmetry of volume redistribution with age (ex: cheek bone loss with redistribution to the lower face) would not be adequately addressed, unless you only focused on those areas that you want to build up.
I have heard a lot of anecdotal evidence of benefit with these but would really love to see more data on them haha in which case, I’d gladly come back here to debunk myself 🤣
So glad Michelle asked that! I was just watching her video after this one wondering why she did recommend it but Doctorly didn’t. Great convo

Are there any studies to back the theory that using Microcurrent will actually exercise the muscles, which will produce more wrinkles in the long run? It seems logical but just curious if there have been studies? Thank you.
@@thedesertdancer it doesn't "exercise" the muscles. The current is supposed to stimulate the cells to produce more collagen
@@melbournewoman
I was responding to Dr. Shah since he said that strengthening and exercising the muscles with Microcurrent would result in more wrinkles in the long run. That was his comment and that is why I was asking him if there are any studies that conclude that Micro-current causes more wrinkles with long term use. Whenever I read about Microcurrent, there are many benefits beyond stimulating collagen.
I use Myolift. I’ve been using micro current for 30 years. It does make a difference - but over a long period of time. I am 56. If I don’t use the device, I actually notice a difference, a big difference especially in my neck! We all have to do what is right and works for ourselves! Sunscreen, Retin A and Myolift is a protocol that has worked and is working for me.
Which Myolift do you use? I believe MyoLift MD offers up to 800 micro amps.
@@thedesertdancer hi, I am not a doctor so cannot buy the MD version. I have the mini. It goes up to 400 ma. It’s worked for me

Do you think this device works for having thinner face?
I dont want it for antiaging, I am 26, I mean it could be good to start preventing but my main issue is thay I want my face to look less chubby I wanna have a defined jaw.
So I thought that can slightly make my face less chubby.
Could it work?
Its super expensive so... i wanna make sure its gonna work fr my purpose.
I’m am so grateful for the info you provide on this channel! So much of the beauty industry’s success relies on the ignorance of consumers. The science is over most of our heads so when we hear someone talking “science,” we always have to consider the source.

4 years using Nuface it does work for me. It lifts and plumps my skin. I cannot live without the device. I use it daily for 20 minutes.
Me too! I love mine
Same, I’ve been using it 9 months and love my Nuface, I see immediate results and also long term results, once I stop using it a few days I can tell a difference and my skin ad facial contours don’t look as good
Same here! I’m using my nuface (mini) over 1 year now. I was shocked by the results. It’s my number 1 beauty device. Can’t live without it! I’m also using it 20 min a day.
Same here. It really works. I’ve been using it fir over a year now.
Dang. 20 minutes a day though is a lot. Do you do it at night or in the AM?
The only thing I will disagree with is your age difference. You are young and your skin is toned. You should not notice any difference. I am 70 and I notice a big difference when I use my Myolift Mini. I am also thinking about getting the ZIIP. I just don't think you are able to do a real comparison on your skin.
Great point
Agreed
I have the ZIIP & I feel like I've been ripped off... btw I'm in my early 30s & I don't really see much of a difference... 😣
Exactly all young people are using this but they don’t need it yet
It irks me when 20 year olds complain about anti-aging products not having any results….if you have no lines or wrinkles to start with then it cannot be determined if the product helps diminish lines and wrinkles.
I know microcurrent device is a splurge for something that doesn't have conclusive research yet but I strongly believe it's a better way to spend money on than splurging on Creme de La Mer or La Prairie skin caviar if one has the money.
I agree that those both are a total waste of money!

Been watching various plastic surgeons and estheticians address this topic of micro current. From what I've gleaned, these devices boost ATP, increase blood flow, drive topicals such as Vit C or Hyaluronic acid into the skin, etc. The major effect they achieved was in LIFTING a sagging face.
true... look into iontophoresis. You'll understand the mechanism behind why microcurrent basically drive those chemicals skin deep and make them work better

The results are cumulative and very subtle so when you are using it everyday, you may not notice a difference. But... stop using it for a while and then fire it up again and you WILL notice a difference! So, it must be doing something!!

I love my NuFACE. Works for me also
Happy it's working for you but try this simple test. Treat one side of your face with as normal with your device. On the other side apply the same gel as the first but this time switch the Nuface OFF. Let me know if you can spot any difference in the outcome.
@@TALKCalgary The difference is clear. "Technique" is as important as a fully functioning device. If the device is fully functioning, you will perceive a metallic taste in your mouth (if you have fillings) AND you will see violet light when working around the thin skin of the eye zone. Also, you have to use NuFace with proper technique or you're pissing in the wind. I watched a few of my friends use it in a circular motion and that's NOT it.
Same here. I have the Trinity Pro & get great results.
I have a NuFace and I thought the whole concept was to tighten the muscle so the face is lifted by the supporting muscle, not to "build" muscle. I find that if I use it consistently, I get results. I once used a similar device by another company years ago, which was extremely painful. I read a study that those old microcurrent devices could actually cause aging! Glad I threw it away!
I love the way you talk to us. We are not idiots and I appreciate you go deeply in a subject. (Sorry if I did grammar errors, I'm French ☺) Good job with your YT chanel, by the way ! 👌
This is the kinds of reviews I like. The scientific ones. I like to have scientific facts as to whether something works or not. Thank you for taking the time for this!
There wasn't scientific 'proof' offered to prove it didn't work. The good Dr also failed to mention HOW microcurrent entered the anesthetic field. It was first introduced for Bells Palsy patients to help lift the side of the face that drooped ... it worked! It's always good to research scientific facts from various resources before making an informed decision.
I don't necessarily agree with this. True there hasn't been enough clinical study but I can tell you from my own personal experience you will get nice results from using microcurrent devices. I am an Esthetician and I've been using the Ziip for 2 years on myself and my clients and we love it. I'm not surprised this very young, flawless skin Dr. will not see any changes, especially within 30 days. I am 55 years old, the first 2 months I used it 3 times a week and there after 1-2 times a week for only 6 minutes or less. I have seen a very noticeable improvement. Do I look like I'm 20?....NO. Do I look like I'm 30?....NO. But I can tell you that my face looks Refreshed, Alive, Lifted and Firmer. My skin is glowing and brighter. My pores look smaller. And I do not have the puffiness under my eyes. It works wonders on my clients that struggle with acne. It literally blasts their surface acne by killing the bacteria. It also helps calm inflammation if they have cystic acne. There are many benefits from it and I wouldn't be so quick to turn away from microcurrent.
Good point about his age.
Amen!!!
I thought the same. Very young person with tight skin on the face wouldn't see a difference
For the $300 or $200 plus cost on many of these devices, they should provide impressive results and they do not. Plus, I heard many also stop working after a year or less. Not worth it. I agree with this video's author.
@@user-vz3fh6oj7d LMAO Uh, NO. That's hardly any cost at ALL. If you're that poor you shouldn't even be considering these kinds of age management devices...🤣😂🤣

I actually do have a Nuface device, and my results were in the form of "waking up" my facial muscles. Before using it, I had a lazy right side, my smile was uneven and my right eyelid was more hooded. Microcurrent woke my muscles up, and now both sides move evenly and I no longer have uneven eyelids. I think some people expect microcurrent to replace cheek filler though, which is unrealistic.
I always come to you first for skincare, thank you for the full review, it's obvious a lot of time went into this!!
I'm 45 and microcurrent is my jam! You missed the Myolift Mini device by 7E Wellness that goes up to 400 microamps, which is stronger than the other 3 devices you reviewed (I've tried them all and love them too) but the Myolift is my all time fave because of microamps and separate erase and educate modes. I've never done any injectables, and I don't need to thanks to microcurrent!!
Yes I am 36 and I just got the Myolift mini and I'm on the second week of using it for about 3-4 days a week and my left eyebrow which for as long as I could remember has been lower than my right, this morning I woke up and it was at the same height of my right! I was skeptical but I decided to dive in with the 30 day return. Might be a keeper.
But yes there is a lack of scientific data.
@@AR-md1zq that's awesome!! I have the same problem and going to see if I can lift my right brow to match the left!
I wish there was science to help back up a lot of treatments that do seem to provide results.
I would like him to evaluate this one too
Wow! Does the myolift help with droopy eyes?
Yes, what a lot of microcurrent reviews on UA-cam fail to include is at-home devices (like the ones used in this video) will never provide the same results as professional devices, unless used daily. The at-home devices are not always used correctly by the consumer, so it is best to have the treatments done by a trained professional.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You saved me tonnes of time in trying to figure out whether these devices had a scientific basis to work. Your channel is soo needed.
I have been using the foreo bear for 2 months now and I took before/after pictures. It has 100000% made a difference in the way my face looks when relaxed, my eyebrows sit higher and my cheeks are lifted, so it definitely works.
Same, I haven’t even used it a month and my double chin is crazy smaller, like it’s crazy, and my face had been getting really round and now it’s got a jawline akin to four years ago
Love my device too🥰
Can u link it here?
I have the Nuface but it doesn't hold a charge anymore (got it in 2014) so was thinking of getting the Bear. Does it cause volume loss?
Can you post pictures?
I think it’s fair to say that the research isn’t there on the mechanism of action. But I also think your statement, “I’m not saying it doesn’t work” is also key. I do appreciate that you want the science to be there and agree that more clinical trials based on efficacy rather than mechanism would be very helpful (the mechanism doesn’t have great data but it appears from the many many older people who have used it and seen great results that it does work for many). So I respect your video.
I am still planning to buy a micro current device in the near future because of the results based before and afters I’ve seen.
The reason is while we don’t know why it works (which could come with some potential risks long-term), there’s an example in my field of psychotherapy where EMDR is well established as a WHO backed, gold standard treatment for PTSD and really everything that it’s tried with (depression, anxiety, phobias, etc etc) and the mechanism of action is just not well understood (people claim to get it but we’re not there yet). Where this does differ is that EMDR has A LOT of efficacy studies. Why I using that as a comparison is doctors know about CBT and reply push it based on the research (what is never discussed is that CBT studies often have a 70% dropout rate because it’s not very effective for most people, yet the 30% who stay in studies are the self-selected few without bottom up brain changes aka trauma that lives in non-verbal brain centres).
So conclusion - research not only often doesn’t have the answer - research itself can be quite flawed.
With this kind of tech there’s a huge number of people using it (large population - large n), so it appears to be effective form those many people’s before and afters. Not a perfectly controlled study, sometimes incentivized by the manufacturers, but traditional research is also often flawed and bent to line pockets and prove hypotheses (rather than the null hypotheses as they should be doing - yeah I spent years doing research).
So thanks for working within your field and being responsible, but western medicine has these inherent research flaws and gets heady.
Rant over lol
I finally got off of sugar all sugar & in about 3-4 months my skin became bouncier, plumper, firmer, more hydrated & smooth, my hair a little thicker, my eyes clearer and since I've been keeping my neck up, not down, the wrinkles and the little sagginess that was going on is slowly disappearing. And it hasn't cost me a penny. In fact, I'm saving money cutting out the sugar.
I was brought up on health food and know sugar is bad, sadly I find it hard to give up in tea. I know, I hear my mother in my head saying, don’t eat that.
@@rhonda6791 have you tried alternative sweeteners like stevia? Some of them are very good. Find the right one and you won't miss the sugar.

Thank you Cindy I’ve heard that was good, I’ll give it a go 😊
Try using it on someone who needs it! It's hard to show results on people like you who really don't need it!
Isn’t that always the way? The young and beautiful tell me all day long what their cosmetics etc can do for me! Gimme a break. I need similar test subjects as myself.
I LOVE my Nuface mini toner!
Seeing is believing!
A good massage will remove puffiness and it is free. Thank you for this honest, scientific response.
I have definitely seen a difference using the Nuface and I think one needs to use it for longer than 5 minutes at a time and it needs long term use to see results. I don't think we have enough studies to prove it's efficacy but many people love it so maybe we need those long term studies???
Agree with you!
Thanks ☺️
I have had my NuFACE for a few years….there is hyaluronic acid in the liquid….that is what is causing the improvement
Yes!
Well, the study is necessary bc remember the old times, everbody swear by botox and fillers and now we see the side effects of years of using it.
I use Nuface with the 2 extra attachments too. I've had bells palsy before and this is actually the same therapy ( electrocurrent ) that's used on drooping eyebrows, eyes, lips, etc. In my opinion, I believe the reason this works on some and not others is because some are so young, they have nothing to really improve, and second if your only looking for wrinkle reduction, this might not be for you. Look into a Nira for that. ( FDA approved skin laser ) I think for drooping and sculpting, this works 👍 great. I feel like I look younger now then I did 3 years ago when I first started using this. And I'm 56.
Great point about Bell's palsy and results for microcurrent!
This is super helpful thank you for posting!
Can i kindly ask you what you use for thre lines between the eyebrows.. im 29 and ive got one deep line
@@josettefarrugia7689 Botox or its competitor products will change your "one deep line" and pretty much heal it up in like six months.

For us women that refuse Botox needles and facelifts, this is the best choice. I have seen amazing results. Will use these tools the rest of my life😎
I'm wih you on this, @hellebermudez3951, and there are too many women seeing good results to be ignored. Used micro current for six months. I’m 68 years old. There has been no noticeable change. I always felt it didn’t do anything but I gave it a reasonable try. The doctor just informed my decision to stop wasting my time using micro current.
I'm 65 years old and started using NuFace in January 2021 faithfully every day...haven't notice any changes. Sad
Well, damn. I am a physician and definitely fell for the social media hype and bought this a few months ago. I have been using it diligently but haven't felt confident if its been doing anything. Of late I started looking at actual dermatology-recommended skincare on youtube (don't know why I haven't been doing this all along especially as I myself am a doctor so looking to estheticians or social media for skincare advice instead of actually getting tips from another doctor now seems obviously dumb), and the consensus is certainly not pro-microcurrent devices. This is the only video I have found so far that has a thorough literature review as well as a discussion of why the concept is completely flawed in the first place. Thanks a lot! Will be checking out more of ya'lls videos.
Have you find something that works?:)
P.S. You just said something about facial exercise that I ALWAYS wondered about: how exercising could really help if it’s excessive use of certain muscles that causes wrinkles in the first place. It always seemed counterproductive in my humble ignorance. Ok, I’m officially your fan now.
Breakdown of collagen causes wrinkles, not smiling, laughing, talking or puckering up for a kiss.
I’ve been using nuface mini for almost two months. I’ve noticed nothing so I’m happy to have seen this video. I was trying to decide whether to send it back or not but now I know what I’m going to do.
Really cleared up some questions I had on the efficacy of microcurrent. Would love to see a video on RF (radiofrequency) treatments.
be careful with RF: there are many in the medical community that say American women are "over heating" their facial tissues. Google the RF/Thermage single probe "disasters".
As a former microcurrent educator, the good Dr failed to prove the lack of efficacy of a phenomenal treatment. Microcurrent ALWAYS produces a lift which makes me question his understanding in how to use the device & the technique he used. He also failed to mention that microcurrent was first used on patients with Bells Palsy.
@Karen Osterblom which is why I want to use this to try to help the after effects it left me with..I would be interested in your opinion and advice..I read that ziip uses both micro and nano current and I am considering this or myolift mini. It can also assist injuries as well. The nano in combination is supposed to create better results then you have the lumo an all in 1 device. They sell a eye option venus uses thermal heating as they say. I didn't think microcurrent can be used on eyelids so 🤷 and apparently rf is not recommended with anyone who is blood clot susceptible. I have nuderma clinical and it's doing great things. I have theraface for massage. Any thoughts kindly message me.
Thank you so much for this video! Finally a review made by a doctor and objectively. This video cleared all my doubts!

I have the Nuface Mini , it definitely works, before and after photos don’t lie. Consistent use has made my skin texture a lot smoother and my jawlines are visibly lifted. But the result only lasts a couple of days, need to keep using it to keep the results up.
If it makes you more consistent with over all skin care it makes sense that it works 👍
Tina I have the Nuface full size with the light attachment. Consistency is the key. I've really seen great results because I am consistent
I am enlightened.Device is very expensive and I want to make sure it is working before buying.Excellent discussion by the doctor. Thanks
Had been using Nuface for 9 months now.. 6 times a week. 15 minutes each session. I do see a overall improvement.
I am older lady using this device and definitely see a difference in lift and tone in my face. With daily use. I think if you are young and you skin is plump you may not see much difference but it is a good way to maintain appearance.
Over 50 medical doctor here. I'm using microcurrent as well as facial exercises and they have improved my skin. (my problems were beginning sagging and fine lines).

Same, I just turned 51 and noticed that over the past year I'm suddenly developing jowls and sagging in the lower part of my face. So I was right, If a person is using Hyloronic acid, it's not the device that's causing the change. Thank you Dr. Shah for doing your own research and actually using the device..
In my opinion, your face doesn't need a single thing. You are an attractive man with the most beautiful eyes.
How old are you? Doesn’t really look like you have any signs of aging yet? I don’t imagine you would see any obvious results in 30 days. But thank you for all the great clinical data
As an ex-model who has tried the best skincare and skin products available worldwide..I can only speak about what I have noticed has worked consistently for me in order of importance: 1. Retin A, 2. Salicylic Acid, & 3. Alpha Hydroxy Acid. Microcurrent devices did nothing for me. Neither did light therapy. But regular chemical exfoliation made a world of a difference in terms of clarity, texture and wrinkle prevention. How could it not? You are removing old skin to reveal new skin. And new skin is as good as it gets. As for sagging facial skin..sorry..but the only thing I have seen that actually works for that to a noticeable degree is surgery. Great job, Dr. Shah! PS: You're quite the hottie too! 😉

I specialize in microcurrent facial treatments. A series on a client is usually 12 treatments over 6 weeks. Not sure how far you can get with 30 days. I have lots of happy clients. Something must be working.
I’m glad you see results with your clients! My argument here has very little to do with my experience with the actual devices - though most people seem to be focusing on that here. My argument is the lack of science behind recommending these devices and the emphasis on “muscle bulking” in the marketing push of these devices. As we know that muscle loss does not contribute to aging in the face, it doesn’t make much sense to try to work these muscles out. Especially when stronger muscles would lead to more wrinkles.
However, the mechanism by which some people see benefit may be completely unrelated to muscle toning, but we would have no idea why because there hasn’t been ANY studies on it. The point I made, several times in the video, is that these devices MIGHT work but I am not recommending them due to the lack of evidence and the fact the muscle growth is a nonsensical method of facial rejuvenation based on MRI imaging of the aging face.
Wouldn’t you want you doctor to make recommendations based on research?
Christine are at home devices worth it? Obviously it won’t be the same as a salon treatment
Also do these help with droopy eyelids?
@@78MooMoo78 i have Nuface and it did worked for me. I saw results within the first week. I am now 40 years old, I bought it when I was 38 years old. I have hypothyroidism and my skin really changed and started to look awful prior to me buying any device. Nuface worked and I saw improvement but I didn’t saw a miracle. For me the game changer was micro-needling which I started earlier this yr. My skin was textured bc of my health condition and now is almost porcelain but I still have dark spots here and there. To be honest, I don’t use filters anymore.
@@Doctorly there are multiple small scale studies done on its effects in muscle injury, paralysis, and even studies which looked at the effects on facial aging. While these studies can’t be generalized to the entire population, they have shown benefits (you listed a few in your “sources” and the majority of these studies do show positive effects even in elderly bed bound patients with muscle deconditioning). Micro current devices have been used since the 60s in both clinical and esthetic settings with positive results. The science probably lies somewhere along the lines of why we encourage seniors to do resistance training for bone health (yes muscle mass affects bone mass and there is a plethora of scientific data to support this), the overall impact the massage techniques may have on increasing circulation temporarily to the areas treated, and probable compensatory mechanisms that may increase collagen production. Prior to purchasing an at home device I would spend $325 per session at a medispa for treatments (because even I as a skeptic saw tremendous results). Now, I do the bulk my treatments at home with great results and I’d say it’s definitely not the gel as proposed in the video because I rinse it off (something in the formula does not play nice with my skincare). I don’t think the devices are for everyone and should be used as a preventative measure when first signs of aging appear. I also believe there needs to be a bigger emphasis on spreading awareness for patients with epilepsy and other disorders which may be triggered by the devices inadvertently. That being said, there has been overwhelming anecdotal evidence to support microcurrent facials in the aesthetic world and I would love to see some large scale RCTs done on specifics about the science behind it as well. Hopefully someone will secure enough funds to do so. I would encourage all consumers to actually READ the articles you posted as sources first and then generate their own opinions based on the science that is available, their own individual comfort, and the cost effectiveness of paying a one time $$$ vs yearly $$$$ fees at a licensed esthetician’s office.
Love microcurrent too. It works over time. 😚
While some of the at-home versions of these devices market themselves as a “workout for your face” - in my opinion that is more like EMS than true “microcurrent.” True microcurrent will stretch some muscles and contract others (either relaxing the muscle similar to how a botox would) or contract it to give a “lift.” Many of these at-home devices are questionable in what frequency they use - whether it is microcurrent or something like galvanic. I’d be interested to see a study involving some of the machines estheticians may use and ones that have separate probes rather than two that are “stuck” together like the nuface. Great video!
Many thanks. Could you do a review on those light face masks which everyone is losing their minds over? Please .... xx

I’ve had great results with my Foreo Bear. I’m very impressed! My laugh lines have improved and so have my 11 lines.
As a one time research scientist, I would also say that they would need to include test groups that use sham creams as the hyaluronic acid is a major variable.
Thank you for sharing your result and for sharing that moving the facial muscles more can deepen the wrinkles lines. I'll wait to see how the science will progress as well.
Dr, Shah, thank you. This was VERY informative. Could you possibly re-review the microcurrent device on a patient or staff member with some actual aging issues? No offense please, but you saying you saw no improvement on your already perfect face isn't a fair test!
Yes, Dr. Shah, you're WAY to young to have seen any results! I am 65 and did recently buy the Foreo Bear, although I haven't used it much. I am more interested in tightening my jowl and neck areas. If I ever get my act together, I'll let you know how it worked.

@@anononnl I think building collagen is key. Radio frequency and LED go deeper in the skin layers and help replace collagen.
Not to mention botox causes atrophy in the muscles so maybe the amount of botox that he has effects the reduced muscle stimulation.

Maybe it works different in different people. This guys face is already perfect, I was thinking... how could he look even better. My guess was that this probably wouldn’t work out much for him.
I love mine too, it does work....what a good idea buying 2 to save time yet still do maximum routine. Just wish the primer was cruelty free, because of this I’m going to try a different primer . But nuface definitely lifts and tones 👍
Thank you very much, Dr Shah, for getting out there and stressing out the need for proper research, all these expensive "miraculous" devices are just based on marketing but not on actual research and that is worrisome. I personally saw a great change of skin texture after following your advises on exfoliator, niacinamide and vitamin c, if routine is done properly, these devises are totally void. I really appreciate your scientific integrity, keep up great work!
I have used CACI microcurrent for 38 years and it does work. I also use Nuface if i'm in a hurry. It like exercising your body muscles, once you get them toned you tone easier so you have to bear with it for a while.

HOWEVER WHEN WE HEAR THE LIES FROM THE BRILLIANT MARKETING TO SELL THEIR PRODUCTS WE HEAR WHAT WE WANT TO HEAR SO THEREFORE WE BELIEVE!!!!

The male epidermis is thicker than the female skin. Your skin is young and flawless. You don't have sag. If you were 50yrs. With eye bags, hooded eyes, and jowls you might be a good candidate to give a review. Also, you cannot do back to back 30 day microcurrent trials. There is no way to discern if you have cumulative results and/or which device to give praise to. That said, Male skin has a cross pattern design of thickness whereas women have a linear pattern. And is why cellulite and thin skin is an issue for women. Muscle contracting does work. Doesn't cause more wrinkles when used correctly. It balances out those dominant facial muscles that cause marionette lines, smoker lines and 11's. It strengthens and taps into underdeveloped facial muscles. No different than working the body muscles when, for example, you're quad dominant and your posterior is weak. Or bicep dominant and triceps are weak. Some people are unhappy with the sting or jolt of a true microcurrent machine can cause to a new user. Usually due to lifting the device up off the face and / or very little conductor gel or water. You want to feel the contraction of muscle! 5 mins is not enough. At best 15mins sessions. I am looking for a new device is why I watched this review. Thanks!
The science is still just currently lacking at this point. The results of these devices are decent, but VERY temporary & definitely requires lots of time & daily dedication. Botox would give even better results, & would require way less time for the same results if not better. Overall a much better investment. I think these devices are for people oddly scared of Botox from the whole “natural skincare ingredients are healthier/less toxic” movement, but unnecessarily. It’s very safe, & has loads of proven results to back up the effect it gives.
