BG Music:
This song just gives vibes of your best day in your youth when you felt indestructible, full of life, no worries. With your mates. A vibe
you couldnt have said it better
"Indestructible". That's the feeling I'm prayerfully still clinging to, as I turn 71 in February.
wow i really felt ur words..omg
Righto, Antony. The good ole days when everything rocked for about everybody.
First song in the morning. It's a blaster. Just puts you in a good mood.
This song was basically about the freedom that teens had in the 60s. This was a new phenomenon, with car culture at the center of it.
I can't state clearly enough how much of a musical genius Brian Wilson is.
Surf music is soo warm even surf punk or surf rock
I think it was the first more innocent thing. It’s about loading up your buddies in the car and headed out for fun. Brian Wilson, the groups songwriting genius eventually grew tired of writing songs about surfing and cars. He really did write some beautiful songs that challenged even The Beatles to do better. Listen to the song “ God only knows” and see how far they progressed. The album called “Pet Sounds” is a flat out masterpiece.
No hidden meaning. Getting around just means they are known all over town.
The lyrics “ my buddies and me are getting real well known, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone, I get around”
We always take my car, 'cause it's never been beat
And we've never missed yet with the girls we meet
None of the guys go steady 'cause it wouldn't be right
To leave their best girl home now on a Saturday night
it's both part of the fun was scoring with MULTIPLE chic's as in not going steady. If your young or for any reason don't know going steady is having a monogamous relationship a ''steady'' girlfriend
Drag racing/Cruise nights always
@@vodkaa1 Ahhh the Smile sessions/smiley smile is probably as close as we'll get. The smile sessions are AMAZING. Edit: as for the song topic.. bring "your best girl" around. I'm sure there's a double entendre here.
Definitely.
"Dont Worry Baby" is amazing. Still so beautiful! "In My Room" is also worth a listen.
You never hear vocal harmony and complexity like this in today's pop music. These guys could SING with no autotune.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “Help Me Rhonda”, “Barbara Ann” and “Little Deuce Coupe”!!!
Gotta love those falsetto backing vocals by Brian Wilson.
"dont worry Baby" another great BB song.
Always loved their harmonies. They was absolutely masters at it.
Beach Boys' pre-"Pet Sounds" peak. The production is impeccable. Brian Wilson's genius in every note.
My car's not been beat refers to street racing. On Saturday nights in small towns kids would cruise up and down main street. Eventually, someone would dare someone else to a drag race. You really need to watch the movie "American Graffiti" to get an idea of what was happening in the 50's and early 60's.
Takes me back to being a teenager ,hanging round the village green in uk with a transistor radio ,hippie bells and all the world ahead of us ,best times
Even while The Beatles ruled the mid to late 60's in America, The Beach Boys still shined with their straight forward pop-rock songs of 3 minutes or less. This was a monster hit in 1964.. Nice reaction as always.. Thank you for your honesty and both of your insights to all these reactions.. We will all miss them!!..
Did I miss a video? Are Brad & Lex suspending their channel?
Brings flashbacks of the opening scene of "Look Who's Talking" for me.
Beach Boys harmonies were far more complex than Beatles (very jazz inspired). 4 part harmony is a whole other level.
@@Coopiedoo0 Hey Coop, thanks for the info. I was unaware. Love this channel, and being a father, I understand Lex needing time and space to care for their baby. I’m happy for them, and can’t wait for all of them to get on camera again. ✌️
I believe I heard the Beach Boys were outselling the Beatles in the U.K. at one time.
One of the best Acapella singing groups of all time. They dont do it often but when they do its magnificent.
I have been to concerts featuring acapella groups of all sizes and "Barbershop Quartets" - the music gets boiled down to its melodic and harmonic majesty that the original songwriter and arranger blessed it with. The groups with fewer voices sometimes covered Beach Boys material (particularly my old favorite "In My Room"). Stunning beauty in which to be enveloped in a large contemporary concert hall.
Surfing, cars, girls, fun places, loving life......all brought to you, in unparalleled harmony, by America's band!
"take a look who's free - " Great lyric
No, this song is actually about getting around. Things were a lot more innocent back then. But they were making money from bets on drag racing in the streets. That's what he means when he says "I'm a real cool head, I'm making real good bread". He's saying that he's good at winning his races and he gets paid. No double entendres here. They had several songs about drag racing, like "Shut Down" and "Little Deuce Coupe". It was a big part of the teenage culture back then.
Saw em three times back in the 70's..Always a great show. And yeah it was definitely a car culture in the 60's and 70's!
That's Brian Wilson's vocals doing super high notes .
I was still at school when this innocent pop song was a massive hit, I'm now 74 and still love it even if I can't dance to it anymore.
Old surf rock, they were from California, so they had that Cali sound. Also they mixed it up with doo wop which was very popular during the '50s and '60s. Doo Woo, the singing harmony style and kind of group R&B type singing and capella choir type singing singing woo, dooo , waa didi, wa wa uh ooohhh! and other random words. lol Soda pop shop music.
Beach Boys were successful during the '60s, '70s and '80s. Many great songs from them.
Get around back then meant to socialize and have some fun.
Brad is getting mixed up with "Jump Around" from House of Pain and Lex with Kriss Kross "Jump" Both from rappers and both in the early '90s.Both groups were rappers during the '90s. Also another rapper from the '90s, 2Pac! "I Get Around" is another one. lol
Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Dean Torrance (Jan & Dean) and Frankie Valli (Four Seasons) made singing falsetto cool for popular music. The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean made songs about hot rods, surfing and skateboarding cool, too.
Don't recall any of these groups singing about skateboarding. These are from mid 60's well before skateboarding became more popular.
This music was just a fun time. No hidden meaning. Just a carefree, fun time. That's all. Most of the 60's music was for being happy, carefree and just plain fun. I'm not sure why you always think there is a hidden meaning behind this era's music. Beach Boys were great!
Right! Their songs about girls are pretty innocent too.
But, the cocaine & smack??
As much as I like Good Vibrations and California Girls, this may be my favorite Beach Boys song.
Beach Boys were always the classic group for us beach bums back in the day
Sounds just as good today as it did when I was a kid, circa early 70's, with its crystal clear harmonizing lyrics. Talk about a song that withstands the test of time.
I remember this song when it was new. We had the 45.
cool!
Better than just about any music out today.
The Beach Boys used to come to Clarksville, TN around the 4th of July and do a show at Ft. Campbell, KY for the troops. It was a regular thing for a few years.
One of my Fav's from The Beach Boys. They had around 50 songs plus in the top 100 songs and The Beatles around 70 plus songs in the top 100.
First time I've seen you both get the groove together.
"Surfer Girl", would be a fantastic reaction...😀❤
Love the lead singers voice. Also, yes the song Jump Around was awesome lol. I think artists take ideas from past songs.
That’s Mike Love, he sings lead on most of their biggest hits during this “surf” era
Beach Boys have had such an incredible career, they were so fun to listen to. Just a good time blasting in your car while out cruising with the windows down.
This song sounds like summer when I was a little kid. Memories!
House Of Pain, and The Beach Boys, are, both, kinda the same, when you think about it.
"Surfin' U.S.A." takes, from Chuck Berry.
"Jump Around", is Boston Irish Hip-Hop.
I followed you guys for so long and you still crack me up and make me think. Love it. Yeah, that's an interesting question but I hundred percent guarantee you it's been the same way forever and people always find a way to express it that they get away with just as much as they can get away with and whatever the current cultural norm is at the time without getting canceled. I mean this goes all the way back to Shakespeare really and I'm sure way back to the ancient Greeks and probably the Egyptians.
I'm a child of the sixties and seventies but I was lucky enough to know grandparents and even great-grandparents that were around from the late 1800s up through the time I was born. And especially talking to women, like my grandma or my great-grandma and I actually knew two of my great-grandma's, and in later life they would talk freely with you once I was in later grade school. And 100% they were all into the same stuff, it's just that back then, you would couch it in double entendre just like a lot of hip-hop does now for certain things accept more jokingly anyway, but back then that was the way that you would communicate and of course everyone knew exactly what you were talking about. So I believe Brad is right on this as far as I get around. It just amazes me how the older Generations were just as intense as we were growing up and you guys are just as much as I am now that I'm older, everybody's going to find a way and you just do it.
The Little Girl I Once Knew will blow your mind...highly underappreciated.
For over 3 years UA-cam has been recommending a spoof of this song called "Doing Your Mom". I finally watched it in hopes that it would stop recommending it but nope. Everyday it's there at the top of the list.
Definitely check out "Don't Worry Baby" by them! It's a beautiful song ❤ it's my favorite song from The Beach Boys!
If soaring falsetto "floats your boat", try their "Good Vibrations ", a track so technically complicated, that it couldn't be performed live w/o seriously compromising it's sonic excellence.
BTW, Paul McCartney was once quoted as saying that the B Boys' " God Only Knows" was his fav song of all time ( as of the late 90's, when the quote was made, anyway)
"The Little Girl I Once Knew" was one of their few non-hits in the mid-sixties, but it's a great one with terrific structure.
I have always enjoyed the Beach Boys. Hearing them makes me think of the old school California vibe. Of course talking about sex back then was very taboo. So many songs hid sexual messages within them without using literal sexual words. This was very evident in many songs from the 50's and the 60's.
I remember buying my first Beach Boys LP record album back in the 1970s. It had a mystique about it. It felt particularly special. I don't know why.
Oh guys I love this!!
it's a feel good song,plain and simple.
Carl Wilson's iconic surf guitar is classic.
Beach boys are the kings of harmonizing.
I was 14 when this record came out. I would race home from school and put 'I Get Around' on the Motorola hi-fi, and play it over and over.
This might possibly be the most widely used song on the planet. Its been used in countless ads, commercials, tv shows, movies…
This was my favorite Beach Boys song!
The song you’re referring to is Jump Around,By House of Pain.Much love from France,Anyway!❤️
I think they’re referring to Jump by Kriss Kross, Lex sang a bit of it.
"Jump around" "I get around" I can see how those two could blend. There are both songs to get amped to in there own way.
Probably my favorite song ever..😎👍🏻🇺🇸
This song is a masterpiece of sound.
The instrumental part of this song was taped by a group of studio musicians called The Wrecking Crew, as were many songs from that era.
The original boy-band. Old school barbershop quartet style. NSync got nothing on these guys. LOL
Love this song. Love their sound and their vibe.
And I firmly believe this isn't about 'getting around' shacking up with hotties. It's the innocent take - it's getting out and having fun partying on the town with the boys. It does mention that the boys choose to go steady because leaving the best girls at home on a Saturday would be a crime. (not those exact words). But it implies a more traditional monogamous relationship.
"Don't Worry Baby", "My Room" and "Surfer Girl" are by far my favorites.
Los Angeles and Orange County were a lot different places in the 1960s. Booming economy, tons of people moving there from all over the country for the good paying jobs, homes were cheap and the whole area was built for the automobile. It inspired a whole car culture, youth culture, surfing and surf music like the Beach Boys. It was really a paradise back then - the California Dream was real at one time. But yeah, that was 50-60 years ago and things changed fast.
This brings back memories of the teens, (my hangout pals and me!), in South Tampa playing hookie from high school, can't say which two schools they were, to go hang out at the Beach in St. Pete and in Clearwater back in the 1970's. I'm sure they did that back in the 1960's when this song first came out! GOOD TIMES!
Major stardom built on a string of solid hits . Jan and Dean had several hits in a similar style .
This song is timeless
i 1st heard this song when i was little watching flight of the navigator on the disney channel one night. after that i always liked the beach boys.
Brian Wilson, bat shit insane, and one of the best song writers ever
Brian had a mental breakdown but he was not batshit insane. He's still with us today and he's doing well for his age.
This was the record that first got me into the Beach Boys in 1963. I remember buying this record. I have been a fan ever since. Then just about 5 years ago I saw them at the Sheffield City Hall and shook hands with Mike Love the main writer of this song. I have seen them many times.
Brian Wilson was originally listed as the sole writer of the song, I get around, but Mike Love who wrote only 5 words in the whole song, sued Brian Wilson for songwriting credits for the song. Greedy ass Mike Love wanted credit & money for writing 1% of the song. Brian wrote all the music & 99% of all the words. Brian & Mike would fight over all The Beach Boys writing credits after that for years.
@@MichaelSSmith-hs5pw I think Mike Love has always been a money-grubber. I can't stand him.
@@tone4507 Absolutely, Mike Love was always a Dick from the very beginning, Brian hated him, but Mike was a cousin so his family forced Brian to put him in the band, they never got along, same thing with Dennis, Brian’s mom made Brian put Dennis in the band, but I liked Dennis, I thought he was cool.
Lex: “I wonder if they had the same urges back then as today?”
You got created, right?
They were singing about cruising! Hitting all the drive throughs on a Saturday night. Riding around with your buddies. Having some fun after a week of school.
This music makes me relive the summers of my teens.
Beach Boys are pure genius.
There was a Mutual admiration between the Beatles & Brian Wilson . They would sent each other tapes of what they were working on
The words are, “Town to town, I’m a real cool head, I’m making real good bread.” Great stuff, great review. Brian is a genius. I know what you mean about the “Wah, wah, ooh.” 😂
Such a good song! This was on the 1986 Flight Of The Navigator motion picture soundtrack.
One of my favorites is Little Deuce Coupe, followed very closely by Heroes and Villains and Sloop John B.
i always picture the movie scene from "Look Whos Talking"...lol when I hear this song
getting around meant with your car, AND with multiple girls, as you didn't go 'steady', but made yourself available to more than one other girl, a skill that was hard to achieve
Two girls for every boy...
On one hand, it’s true that back then, if you wanted to say something really risqué, sometimes you had to conceal it a bit. It wasn’t as “out there” as it is now.
On the other hand, that doesn’t mean we need to read that into everything. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, as the saying goes. We need not assume that everything had a scandalous subtext.
I had never heard the song 'I don't know" before listening to you two.
The Wilson Brothers singing their California beach music. ❤
I thank my big sister for sharing this with me as a preteen on onslow beach Jacksonville North Carolina 😊
OMG, I lost it when Brad did the "showing your body" thing! 😆
remember Alfred Hitchcock hat problems filming the famous shower scene from Psycho because the agency considered filming a woman showering and showing a lot of "blood" on screen as scandalous or the trouble Elvis got for his hip swing. So yes definitely think that people had to be creative back in the day to say the things that you can just say today
Brad thinking of House of Pain - Jump
I think it's called jump around. Jump was kriskross
Love your shirt Lex! I went to The Infinite Sadness Tour in Dallas in '96, was amazing!
Now you’ll know who Brian Wilson is (from the Barenaked Ladies song).
I had a band in high school that played 3 Beach Boy songs for the senior talent show. I was a rock star for a day. It was great!
If you watch any of the Frankie Avalon-Annette Funnicello Beach Party movies you'll see where this kind of music is coming from.
Harmonizing perfection
Van Dyke Parks+Brian Wilson=music gold.
The 60's were all about fun. I was 13 when this song came out. There was a whole "car" songs in the early mid 60s. At that time a car was a guy's identity. It was an extension of a guy's personality.
I remember reading about how John Lennon was so impressed by this album, especially this song.
beetles had very limited talent. Best album was Meet the Beetles, almost all covers.
@@mochiebellina8190 Congratulations - yours is the most stupid UA-cam comment of all time! And that takes SOME doing. The Beatles (not Beetles) had very limited talent? Because people with very limited talent ALWAYS become the best selling recording artists of all time, don't they? Do you think hundreds of millions of fans have got it wrong, and you , Mochiebellina8190, are the only one in the universe who's spotted it? WOW!
The production value of Beach Boys music was far ahead of its time. Brian Wilson is a genius. If you doubt that, just put on any Beach Boys album and play it from beginning to end. It’s something special.
The 60's had a lot of car culture. There was no internet. So it was normal to go cruising around. It was like that even in the early 90's.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is what is called 'SURF MUSIC.'
And the best part is ITS STILL better than most music of today...
Instant get-happy song!
John Lennon spent a whole month one summer locked up at home listening to "Pet Sounds." Just goes to show that four part harmony can be cool.
Great stuff. EDIT: I love how you two don't have a racist bone in your body or cell in your brain. You give me hope for the future. ♥
Love the conversation at the end.
It was surfing sound. You've got to remember that we only had vinyl record players and radio for music.
House of Pain "Jump Around"
Back in the 50s there was a famous musician who died in the same plane crashes Richie valens he was called the big Bopper . Bopping was a teenager code for having sex. Even Bob Seger had a song called the Horizontal Bop and Cyndi Laughed ad She Bops
They're talking about going steady and not leaving "your best girl home on a Saturday night"
Brad, back in this channel's earlier days, I was pretty critical of you. But I gotta say, I've "gotten to know you" better, and I respect you so much, man. I love the relationship you and Lex have, too. I mean, no matter what, she is the star, I gotta say. LOL. But I just have to say that I've grown to enjoy YOU so much too.
First heard this classic in the movie, Three Kings
